We investigate the existence of higher order exceptional points (EPs) in non-Hermitian systems, and show that $μ$-fold EPs are stable in $μ-1$ dimensions in the presence of anti-unitary symmetries that are local in parameter space, such as e.g. PT or CP symmetries. This implies in particular that 3-fold and 4-fold symmetry-protected EPs are stable respectively in 2 and 3 dimensions. The stability of such exceptional points is expressed in terms of the homotopy properties of a "resultant vector" that we introduce. Our framework also allows us to rephrase the previously proposed $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index of PT and CP symmetric gapped phases beyond the realm of two-band models. We apply this general formalism to a frictional shallow water model that is found to exhibit 3-fold exceptional points associated with topological numbers $\pm1$. For this model, we also show different non-Hermitian topological transitions associated with these exceptional points, such as their merging and a transition to a regime where propagation becomes forbidden.
Using Floquet theory, we investigate the effect of light on triple fold fermions. We study a low energy model as well as a simplified tight binding model under illumination. We find that the three fold degeneracy remains symmetry protected even after applying light if the original band structure is rotationally symmetric around the degeneracy. Otherwise, light can lift the degeneracy and open up a gap. We further investigate the effect of light on the topological Fermi arcs by means of numerical computations. The changes caused by illumination are reflected in experimentally detectable signatu…
Multifold fermions are generalizations of two-fold degenerate Weyl fermions with three-, four-, six- or eight-fold degeneracies protected by crystal symmetries, of which only the last type is necessarily non-chiral. Their low energy degrees of freedom can be described as emergent particles not present in the Standard Model of particle physics. We propose a range of experimental probes for multifold fermions in chiral symmetry groups based on the gyrotropic magnetic effect (GME) and the circular photo-galvanic effect (CPGE). We find that, in contrast to Weyl fermions, multifold fermions can hav…
We describe the symmetry protected nodal points that can exist in magnetic space groups and show that only 3-, 6-, and 8-fold degeneracies are possible (in addition to the 2- and 4-fold degeneracies that have already been studied.) The 3- and 6-fold degeneracies are derived from "spin-1" Weyl fermions. The 8-fold degeneracies come in different flavors. In particular, we distinguish between 8-fold fermions that realize non-chiral "Rarita-Schwinger fermions" and those that can be described as four degenerate Weyl fermions. We list the (magnetic and non-magnetic) space groups where these exotic f…
Exceptional degeneracies, at which both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce, and parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, reflecting balanced gain and loss in photonic systems, are paramount concepts in non-Hermitian systems. We here complete the topological classification of exceptional nodal degeneracies protected by $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in up to three dimensions and provide simple example models whose exceptional nodal topologies include previously overlooked possibilities such as second-order knotted surfaces of arbitrary genus, third-order knots and fourth-order points.
Exceptional point (EP) associated with eigenstates coalescence in non-Hermitian systems has many exotic features. The EPs are generally sensitive to system parameters, here we report symmetry protected isolated EPs in the Brillouin zone (BZ) of a two-dimensional non-Hermitian bilayer square lattice; protected by symmetry, the isolated EPs only move, merge, and split in the BZ. The average values of Pauli matrices under the eigenstate of system Bloch Hamiltonian define a real planar vector field, the topological defects of which are isolated EPs associated with vortices. The winding number char…
So far, topological band theory is discussed mainly for systems described by eigenvalue problems. Here, we develop a topological band theory described by a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP). Our analysis elucidates that non-Hermitian topological band structures may emerge for systems described by a GEVP with Hermitian matrices. The above result is verified by analyzing a two-dimensional toy model where symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs) emerge although the matrices involved are Hermitian. Remarkably, these SPERs are protected by emergent symmetry, which is unique to the systems d…
We propose mechanical systems, described by Newton's equation of motion, as suited platforms for symmetry protection of non-Hermitian topological degeneracies. We point out that systems possess emergent symmetry, which is a unique properties of mechanical systems. Because of the emergent symmetry, in contrast to other systems, fine-tuning of parameters (e.g., gain and loss) is not required to preserve the symmetry protecting exceptional rings in two dimensions. The presence of symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs) in two dimensions is numerically demonstrated for a mechanical graphene w…
Despite recent extensive studies of the non-Hermitian topology, understanding interaction effects is left as a crucial question. In this paper, we address interaction effects on exceptional points which are protected by the non-trivial point-gap topology unique to non-Hermitian systems. Our analysis in a two-dimensional parameter space elucidates the existence of exceptional points and symmetry-protected exceptional rings fragile against interactions; they are topologically protected only in non-interacting cases. This fragility of exceptional points and symmetry-protected exceptional rings ar…
The absence of mirror symmetry, or chirality, is behind striking natural phenomena found in systems as diverse as DNA and crystalline solids. A remarkable example occurs when chiral semimetals with topologically protected band degeneracies are illuminated with circularly polarized light. Under the right conditions, the part of the generated photocurrent that switches sign upon reversal of the light's polarization, known as the circular photogalvanic effect, is predicted to depend only on fundamental constants. The conditions to observe quantization are non-universal, and depend on material par…

The vacuum of a band system, with respect to particles or holes, can become topologically nontrivial when the exceptional points of the non-hermitian Hamiltonian spread over the whole Brillouin zone. The coalescence of the eigenstates eliminates the geometric multiplicity of the Hamiltonian and puts the remaining bands on a topological background. We find several distinct phenomena in these systems: a single band topological model, a two-band Chern insulator in which the topological number of the low band does not compensate to that of the up band, a topologically protected boundary state that…
In non-Hermitian systems, the defective band degeneracies, so-called exceptional points (EPs), can form robust exceptional lines (ELs) in 3D momentum space in the absence of any symmetries. Here, we show that a natural orientation can be assigned to every EL according to the eigenenergy braiding around it, and prove the source-free principle of ELs as a corollary of the generalized Fermion doubling theorem for EPs on an arbitrary closed oriented surface, which indicates that if several ELs flow into a junction, the same number of outflow ELs from the junction must exist. Based on this principl…
Exceptional points (EPs), at which both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce, are ubiquitous and unique features of non-Hermitian systems. Second-order EPs are by far the most studied due to their abundance, requiring only the tuning of two real parameters, which is less than the three parameters needed to generically find ordinary Hermitian eigenvalue degeneracies. Higher-order EPs generically require more fine-tuning, and are thus assumed to play a much less prominent role. Here, however, we illuminate how physically relevant symmetries make higher-order EPs dramatically more abundant and c…
This paper reports on the experimental observation of topologically protected edge state and exceptional point in an open and Non-Hermitian system. While the theoretical underpinning is generic to wave physics, the simulations and experiments are performed for an acoustic system whose structure has non-trivial topological properties that can be characterized by the Chern number provided that a synthetic dimension is introduced. Unidirectional reectionless propagation, a hallmark of exceptional point, is unambiguously observed in both simulations and experiments.
Non-Hermtian (NH) Hamiltonians effectively describing the physics of dissipative systems have become an important tool with applications ranging from classical meta-materials to quantum many-body systems. Exceptional points, the NH counterpart of spectral degeneracies, are among the paramount phenomena unique to the NH realm. While realizations of second-order exceptional points have been reported in a variety of microscopic models, higher-order ones have largely remained elusive in the many-body context, as they in general require fine tuning in high-dimensional parameter spaces. Here, we pro…
Alternating current RLC electric circuits form an accessible and highly tunable platform simulating Hermitian as well as non-Hermitian (nH) quantum systems. We propose here a circuit realization of nH Dirac and Weyl Hamiltonians subject to time-reversal invariant pseudo-magnetic field, enabling the exploration of novel nH physics. We identify the low-energy physics with a generic real energy spectrum from the nH Landau quantization of exceptional points and rings, which can avoid the nH skin effect and provides a physical example of a quasiparticle moving in the complex plane. Realistic detect…
We experimentally simulate in a photonic setting non-Hermitian (NH) metals characterized by the topological properties of their nodal band structures. Implementing nonunitary time evolution in reciprocal space followed by interferometric measurements, we probe the complex eigenenergies of the corresponding NH Bloch Hamiltonians, and study in detail the topology of their exceptional lines (ELs), the NH counterpart of nodal lines in Hermitian systems. We focus on two distinct types of NH metals: two-dimensional systems with symmetry-protected ELs, and three-dimensional systems possessing symmetr…
We study coupled non-Hermitian Rice-Mele chains, which consist of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain system with staggered on-site imaginary potentials. In two dimensional (2D) thermodynamic limit, the exceptional points (EPs) are shown to exhibit topological feature: EPs correspond to topological defects of a real auxiliary 2D vector field in k space, which is obtained from the Bloch states of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As a topological invariant, the topological charges of EPs can be $\pm$1/2, obtained by the winding number calculation. Remarkably, we find that such a topological character…
We show that topologically protected defect states can exist in open (leaky or lossy) systems even when these systems are topologically trivial in the closed limit. The states appear from within the continuum, thus in absence of a band gap, and are generated via exceptional points (a spectral transition that occurs in open wave and quantum systems with a generalized time-reversal symmetry), or via a degeneracy induced by charge-conjugation-symmetry (which is related to the pole transition of Majorana zero modes). We demonstrate these findings for a leaking passive coupled-resonator optical wav…
Non-Hermitian (NH) Hamiltonians have become an important asset for the effective description of various physical systems that are subject to dissipation. Motivated by recent experimental progress on realizing the NH counterparts of gapless phases such as Weyl semimetals, here we investigate how NH symmetries affect the occurrence of exceptional points (EPs), that generalize the notion of nodal points in the spectrum beyond the Hermitian realm. Remarkably, we find that the dimension of the manifold of EPs is generically increased by one as compared to the case without symmetry. This leads to no…
Band topology has been studied as a design principle of realizing robust boundary modes. Here, by exploring non-Hermitian topology, we propose a three-dimensional topological laser that amplifies surface modes. The topological surface laser is protected by nontrivial topology around branchpoint singularities known as exceptional points. In contrast to two-dimensional topological lasers, the proposed three-dimensional setup can realize topological boundary modes without judicious gain at the edge or symmetry protection, which are thus robust against a broad range of disorders. We also propose a…
The fermion doubling theorem plays a pivotal role in Hermitian topological materials. It states, for example, that Weyl points must come in pairs in three-dimensional semimetals. Here, we present an extension of the doubling theorem to non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians. We focus on two-dimensional non-Hermitian systems without any symmetry constraints, which can host two different types of topological point nodes, namely, (i) Fermi points and (ii) exceptional points. We show that these two types of protected point nodes obey doubling theorems, which require that the point nodes come in pairs.…
We study the vibrational spectrum of a constrained classical ring. Due to the presence of 2-order exceptional points, a topologically trivial band at the infinity can make the vibrational band topologically nontrivial. The symmetry, which is believed to be indispensable in topological models, is absent in this model. The fractional boundary states can be found in such classical system. Furthermore, the other aspect of the bulk boundary correspondence is revealed: an extra fractional exceptional point is topologically protected in bulk by the boundary states.
The ideas of topology have found tremendous success in Hermitian physical systems, but even richer properties exist in the more general non-Hermitian framework. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a new topologically-protected bulk Fermi arc which---unlike the well-known surface Fermi arcs arising from Weyl points in Hermitian systems---develops from non-Hermitian radiative losses in photonic crystal slabs. Moreover, we discover half-integer topological charges in the polarization of far-field radiation around the Fermi arc. We show that both phenomena are direct cons…
We propose a scheme to realize various non-Hermitian topological phases in a topolectrical (TE) circuit network consisting of resistors, inductors, and capacitors. These phases are characterized by topologically protected exceptional points and lines. The positive and negative resistive couplings Rg in the circuit provide loss and gain factors which break the Hermiticity of the circuit Laplacian. By controlling Rg, the exceptional lines of the circuit can be modulated, e.g., from open curves to closed ellipses in the Brillouin zone. In practice, the topology of the exceptional lines can be det…
Weyl points are the simplest topologically-protected degeneracy in a three-dimensional dispersion relation. The realization of Weyl semimetals in photonic crystals has allowed these singularities and their consequences to be explored with electromagnetic waves. However, it is difficult to achieve nonlinearities in such systems. One promising approach is to use the strong-coupling of photons and excitons, because the resulting polaritons interact through their exciton component. Yet topological polaritons have only been realized in two dimensions. Here, we predict that the dispersion relation f…
We analyze a zero-dimensional correlated system with special emphasis on the non-Hermitian point-gap topology protected by chiral symmetry. Our analysis elucidates that correlations destroy an exceptional point on a topological transition point which separates two topological phases in the non-interacting case; one of them is characterized by the zero-th Chern number $N_{0\mathrm{Ch}}=0$, and the other is characterized by $N_{0\mathrm{Ch}}=2$. This fact implies that correlations allow to continuously connect the two distinct topological phases in the non-interacting case without closing the po…
We study non-Hermitian higher-order Weyl semimetals (NHHOWSMs) possessing real spectra and having inversion $\mathcal{I}$ ($\mathcal{I}$-NHHOWSM) or time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ ($\mathcal{T}$-NHHOWSM). When the reality of bulk spectra is lost, the NHHOWSMs exhibit various configurations of surface Fermi Arcs (FAs) and Exceptional Fermi Rings (EFRs), providing a setup to investigate them on an equal footing. The EFRs only appear in the region between 2nd-order WNs. We also discover Weyl nodes originating from non-Hermicity, called non-Hermitian Weyl nodes (NHWNs). Remarkably, we find T…
We consider the role of non-triviality resulting from a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that conserves twofold PT-symmetry assembled by interconnections between a PT-symmetric lattice and its time reversal partner. Twofold PT-symmetry in the lattice produces additional surface exceptional points that play the role of new critical points, along with the bulk exceptional point. We show that there are two distinct regimes possessing symmetry-protected localized states, of which localization lengths are robust against external gain and loss. The states are demonstrated by numerical calculation of a quas…
Topological materials exhibit edge-localized scattering-free modes protected by their nontrivial bulk topology through the bulk-edge correspondence in Hermitian systems. While topological phenomena have recently been much investigated in non-Hermitian systems with dissipations and injections, the fundamental principle of their edge modes has not fully been established. Here, we reveal that in non-Hermitian systems robust gapless edge modes can ubiquitously appear owing to a mechanism that is distinct from bulk topology, thus indicating the breakdown of the bulk-edge correspondence. The robustn…
We propose a two-dimensional non-Hermitian Chern insulator with inversion symmetry, which is anisotropic and has staggered gain and loss in both x and y directions. In this system, conventional bulk-boundary correspondence holds. The Chern number is a topological invariant that accurately predicts the topological phase transition and the existence of helical edge states in the topologically nontrivial gapped phase. In the gapless phase, the band touching points are isolated and protected by the symmetry. The degenerate points alter the system topology, and the exceptional points can destroy th…
