Multifold fermions, quasiparticles with multiple degeneracy protected by crystalline symmetries, exhibit a variety of intriguing phenomena stemming from their large topological charges and unique band structures. A comprehensive understanding of their response to external stimuli remains challenging, especially for types protected by nonsymmorphic symmetries where various degrees of freedom are intricately coupled. Here, we systematically construct effective models for multifold fermions that incorporate external fields based on crystalline symmetry. Specifically, we develop a $\boldsymbol{k} \cdot \boldsymbol{p}$ model for the threefold fermion protected by space group I2$_1$3 (No.~199) in the presence of spin--orbit coupling, and derive the terms for external fields. By complementing this with a tight-binding model, we investigate the magnetic field response and reveal the pair annihilation of magnetic monopoles. Furthermore, we construct a $\boldsymbol{k} \cdot \boldsymbol{p}$ model for the eightfold fermion in space group P$\bar{4}3n1'$ (No.~218), including its coupling to external fields. This work provides a robust theoretical foundation for advancing the study of external field responses and transport phenomena in multifold fermions, opening new avenues to explore their rich physics.
Multifold fermion systems feature free fermionic excitations, which have no counterparts in high-energy physics, and exhibit several unconventional properties. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that strain engineering can be used to control the distribution of topological charges in transition metal silicide candidate CoSi, hosting multifold fermions. We demonstrate that breaking the rotational symmetry of the system, by choosing a suitable strain, destroys the multifold fermions, and at the same time results in the creation of Weyl points. We introduce a low energy effective mod…
In spin-orbit coupled crystals, symmetries can protect multifold degeneracies with large Chern numbers and Brillouin zone spanning topological surface states. In this work, we explore the extent to which the nontrivial topology of chiral multifold fermions impacts the spin texture of bulk states. To do so, we formulate a definition of spin-momentum locking in terms of reduced density matrices. Using tools from the theory of topological quantum chemistry, we show how the reduced density matrix can be determined from the knowledge of the basis orbitals and band representation forming the multifo…
We examine the magneto-optical response of chiral multifold fermions. Specifically, we show that they are ideal candidates for observing the Helical Magnetic Effect (HME) previously predicted for simple Weyl fermions. Unlike Weyl fermions, the HME is present in multifold fermions even in the simplest case where the low-energy dispersion is linear and spherically symmetric. In this ideal case, we derive an analytical expression for the HME and find it is proportional to the circular photogalvanic effect; for realistic parameters and accounting for the geometry of the setup, the HME photocurrent…
Using Floquet theory, we investigate the effect of light on triple fold fermions. We study a low energy model as well as a simplified tight binding model under illumination. We find that the three fold degeneracy remains symmetry protected even after applying light if the original band structure is rotationally symmetric around the degeneracy. Otherwise, light can lift the degeneracy and open up a gap. We further investigate the effect of light on the topological Fermi arcs by means of numerical computations. The changes caused by illumination are reflected in experimentally detectable signatu…
Multifold fermions are generalizations of two-fold degenerate Weyl fermions with three-, four-, six- or eight-fold degeneracies protected by crystal symmetries, of which only the last type is necessarily non-chiral. Their low energy degrees of freedom can be described as emergent particles not present in the Standard Model of particle physics. We propose a range of experimental probes for multifold fermions in chiral symmetry groups based on the gyrotropic magnetic effect (GME) and the circular photo-galvanic effect (CPGE). We find that, in contrast to Weyl fermions, multifold fermions can hav…
Chiral multifold fermions are quasiparticles described by higher spin generalizations of the Weyl equation, and are realized as low energy excitations near symmetry protected band crossings in certain chiral crystals. In this work we calculate the linear optical conductivity of all chiral multifold fermions. We show that it is enhanced with respect to that of Weyl fermions with the same Fermi velocity, and features characteristic activation frequencies for each multifold fermion class, providing an experimental fingerprint to detect them. We calculate the conductivity for realistic chiral mult…
We describe the symmetry protected nodal points that can exist in magnetic space groups and show that only 3-, 6-, and 8-fold degeneracies are possible (in addition to the 2- and 4-fold degeneracies that have already been studied.) The 3- and 6-fold degeneracies are derived from "spin-1" Weyl fermions. The 8-fold degeneracies come in different flavors. In particular, we distinguish between 8-fold fermions that realize non-chiral "Rarita-Schwinger fermions" and those that can be described as four degenerate Weyl fermions. We list the (magnetic and non-magnetic) space groups where these exotic f…
We show that the chiral multifold fermions present a dual Haldane sphere problem in momentum space. Owing to the Berry monopole at the degenerate point, a dual Landau level emerges in the trace of quantum metric, with which a quantized geometric invariant is defined through a surface integration. We further demonstrate potential manifestations in the measurable, physical observables. With a lower bound derived for the finite spread of Wannier functions, anomalous phase coherence is identified accordingly for the flat band superconductivity. We briefly comment on the stability of these results …
We report the optical conductivity in high-quality crystals of the chiral topological semimetal CoSi, which hosts exotic quasiparticles known as multifold fermions. We find that the optical response is separated into several distinct regions as a function of frequency, each dominated by different types of quasiparticles. The low-frequency intraband response is captured by a narrow Drude peak from a high-mobility electron pocket of double Weyl quasi-particles, and the temperature dependence of the spectral weight is consistent with its Fermi velocity. By subtracting the low-frequency sharp Drud…
We measured the reflectivity of the multifold semimetal RhSi in a frequency range from 80 to 20000 cm$^{-1}$ (10 meV - 2.5 eV) at temperatures down to 10 K. The optical conductivity, calculated from the reflectivity, is dominated by the free-carrier (Drude) contribution below 1000 cm$^{-1}$ (120 meV) and by interband transitions at higher frequencies. The temperature-induced changes in the spectra are generally weak: only the Drude bands narrow upon cooling, with an unscreened plasma frequency that is constant with temperature at approximately 1.4 eV, in agreement with a weak temperature depen…
Topological semimetals in crystals with a chiral structure (which possess a handedness due to a lack of mirror and inversion symmetries) are expected to display numerous exotic physical phenomena, including fermionic excitations with large topological charge [1], long Fermi arc surface states [2,3], unusual magnetotransport [4] and lattice dynamics [5], as well as a quantized response to circularly polarized light [6]. To date, all experimentally confirmed topological semimetals exist in crystals that contain mirror operations, meaning that these properties do not appear. Here, we show that Al…
Chiral topological semimetals are materials that break both inversion and mirror symmetries. They host interesting phenomena such as the quantized circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) and the chiral magnetic effect. In this work, we report a comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis of the linear and non-linear optical responses of the chiral topological semimetal RhSi, which is known to host multifold fermions. We show that the characteristic features of the optical conductivity, which display two distinct quasi-linear regimes above and below 0.4 eV, can be linked to excitations of …
