We study coupled non-Hermitian Rice-Mele chains, which consist of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain system with staggered on-site imaginary potentials. In two dimensional (2D) thermodynamic limit, the exceptional points (EPs) are shown to exhibit topological feature: EPs correspond to topological defects of a real auxiliary 2D vector field in k space, which is obtained from the Bloch states of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As a topological invariant, the topological charges of EPs can be $\pm$1/2, obtained by the winding number calculation. Remarkably, we find that such a topological characterization remains for a finite number of coupled chains, even a single chain, in which the momentum in one direction is discrete. It shows that the EPs in the quasi-1D system still exhibit topological characteristics and can be an abridged version for a 2D system with symmetry protected EPs that are robust in perturbations, which proves that topological invariants for a quasi-1D system can be extracted from the projection of the corresponding 2D limit system on it.
Attractive ultra-cold fermions trapped in a one-dimensional periodically shaken opticla lattices are considered. For an appropriate resonant shaking the system realizes paradigmatic dimes physics described by Rice-Mele model. The important feature of our system is the possible presence of controlled defects. They result in the creation of topologically protected loclaized modes carrying fractional particle number. Their possible experimental signatures are discussed.
We calculate the gauge invariant cumulants (and moments) associated with the Zak phase in the Rice-Mele model. We reconstruct the underlying probability distribution by maximizing the information entropy and applying the moments as constraints. When the Wannier functions are localized within one unit cell, the probability distribution so obtained corresponds to that of the Wannier function. We show that in the fully dimerized limit the magnitude of the moments are all equal. In this limit, if the on-site interaction is decreased towards zero, the distribution shifts towards the midpoint of the…
In the Hermitian regime, a Berry phase is always the real number. It may be imaginary for a non-Hermitian system, which leads to amplitude amplification or attenuation of an evolved quantum state. We study the dynamics of the non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model driven by a time-dependent external field. The exact results show that it can have full real spectrum for any value of the field. Several rigorous results are presented for the Berry phase with respect to the varying field. We show that the Berry phase is the same complex constant for any initial state in a single sub-band. Numerical simulati…
We study a non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model without breaking time-reversal symmetry, with the non-Hermiticity arising from imbalanced hopping rates. The Berry connection, Berry curvature and Chern number are introduced in the context of biorthonormal inner product. It is shown that for a bulk system, although the Berry connection can be complex numbers, the Chern number is still quantized, as topological invariant. For an opened chain system, the mid-gap edge modes are obtained exactly, obeying the bulk-edge correspondence. Furthermore, we also introduce a local current in the context of biorthon…
In this study, the Landau--Zener (LZ) transition method is applied to investigate a weak non-adiabatic effect on the Zak phase and the topological charge pumping in the Rice--Mele model. The non-adiabatic effect is formulated using the LZ transfer matrix. The effective lower band wave function picks up the Stokes phase as well as the usual dynamical phase through two avoided crossings appearing in the two band instantaneous energy spectrum. The interference effect from the upper band has a decisive influence on the decay behavior of the lower band population. A non-adiabatic extension of the Z…
We investigate the effect of dissipation from a thermal environment on topological pumping in the periodically-driven Rice-Mele model. We report that dissipation can improve the robustness of pumping quantisation in a regime of finite driving frequencies. Specifically, in this regime, a low-temperature dissipative dynamics can lead to a pumped charge that is much closer to the Thouless quantised value, compared to a coherent evolution. We understand this effect in the Floquet framework: dissipation increases the population of a Floquet band which shows a topological winding, where pumping is e…

We investigate the onset of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry breaking in non-Hermitian tight-binding lattices with spatially-extended loss/gain regions in presence of an advective term. Similarly to the instability properties of hydrodynamic open flows, it is shown that $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking can be either absolute or convective. In the former case, an initially-localized wave packet shows a secular growth with time at any given spatial position, whereas in the latter case the growth is observed in a reference frame moving at some drift velocity while decay occurs at any fixed s…

Topological insulators have inspired the study with various quantum simulators. Exploiting the tunability of the qubit frequency and qubit-qubit coupling, we show that a superconducting qubit chain can simulate various topological band models. When the system is restricted to the single-spin excitation subspace, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model can be equivalently simulated by alternating the coupling strength between neighboring qubits. The existence of topological edge states in this qubit chain is demonstrated in the quench dynamics after the first qubit is excited. This excitation prop…
We systematically study the topology of the exceptional point (EP) in the finite non-Hermitian system. Based on the concrete form of the Berry connection, we demonstrate that the exceptional line (EL), at which the eigenstates coalesce, can act as a vortex filament. The direction of the EL can be identified by the corresponding Berry curvature. In this context, such a correspondence makes the topology of the EL clear at a glance. As an example, we apply this finding to the non-Hermitian Rice-Mele (RM) model, the non-Hermiticity of which arises from the staggered on-site complex potential. The …
We propose a scheme comprising an array of anisotropic optical waveguides, embedded in a gas of cold atoms, which can be tuned from a Hermitian to an odd-PT -- symmetric configuration through the manipulation of control and assistant laser fields. We show that the system can be controlled by tuning intra -- and inter-cell coupling coefficients, enabling the creation of topologically distinct phases and linear topological edge states. The waveguide array, characterized by a quadrimer primitive cell, allows for implementing transitions between Hermitian and odd-PT -symmetric configurations, brok…
We introduce a classification scheme for symmetry protected topological phases applicable to stationary states of open systems based on a generalization of the many-body polarization. The polarization can be used to probe the topological properties of non-interacting and interacting closed and open systems as well and remains a meaningful quantity even in the presence of moderate particle-number fluctuations. As examples, we discuss two open-system versions of a topological Thouless pump in the steady state of one-dimensional lattices driven by Markovian reservoirs. In the analogous unitary sy…
