We address the nature of the Thouless charge-pumping for a non-Hermitian (NH) generalization of the one-dimensional (1d) Rice-Mele model, considering a variety which allows closed-form analytical solutions for the eigensystems. The two-band system is subjected to an ``adiabatic'' time-periodic drive, which effectively gives us a closed two-dimensional (2d) manifold in the momentum-frequency space, mimicking a 2d Brillouin zone (BZ) for periodic boundary conditions. For open boundary conditions, we formulate the non-Bloch generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ). All these allow us to compute the Chern numbers of the 2d manifolds emerging for various parameter values, using the BZ or GBZ, which are well-defined integers in the gapped regions of the spectra. If Thouless pumping still holds for NH situations, the expectation values of the net displacement for the particles occupying a given band within a cycle, calculated using the right and left eigenvectors of a biorthogonal basis for the complex Hamiltonians, would coincide with the Chern numbers. However, we find that there are deviations from the expected quantized values whenever the spectra exhibit strongly-fluctuating magnitudes of the imaginary parts of the (generically) complex eigenvalues. This implies that we need to address the question of how to meaningfully define time-evolution, as well as adiabaticity, in the context of NH systems.
Attractive ultra-cold fermions trapped in a one-dimensional periodically shaken opticla lattices are considered. For an appropriate resonant shaking the system realizes paradigmatic dimes physics described by Rice-Mele model. The important feature of our system is the possible presence of controlled defects. They result in the creation of topologically protected loclaized modes carrying fractional particle number. Their possible experimental signatures are discussed.
We study coupled non-Hermitian Rice-Mele chains, which consist of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain system with staggered on-site imaginary potentials. In two dimensional (2D) thermodynamic limit, the exceptional points (EPs) are shown to exhibit topological feature: EPs correspond to topological defects of a real auxiliary 2D vector field in k space, which is obtained from the Bloch states of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As a topological invariant, the topological charges of EPs can be $\pm$1/2, obtained by the winding number calculation. Remarkably, we find that such a topological character…
In the Hermitian regime, a Berry phase is always the real number. It may be imaginary for a non-Hermitian system, which leads to amplitude amplification or attenuation of an evolved quantum state. We study the dynamics of the non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model driven by a time-dependent external field. The exact results show that it can have full real spectrum for any value of the field. Several rigorous results are presented for the Berry phase with respect to the varying field. We show that the Berry phase is the same complex constant for any initial state in a single sub-band. Numerical simulati…
We calculate the gauge invariant cumulants (and moments) associated with the Zak phase in the Rice-Mele model. We reconstruct the underlying probability distribution by maximizing the information entropy and applying the moments as constraints. When the Wannier functions are localized within one unit cell, the probability distribution so obtained corresponds to that of the Wannier function. We show that in the fully dimerized limit the magnitude of the moments are all equal. In this limit, if the on-site interaction is decreased towards zero, the distribution shifts towards the midpoint of the…
We study a non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model without breaking time-reversal symmetry, with the non-Hermiticity arising from imbalanced hopping rates. The Berry connection, Berry curvature and Chern number are introduced in the context of biorthonormal inner product. It is shown that for a bulk system, although the Berry connection can be complex numbers, the Chern number is still quantized, as topological invariant. For an opened chain system, the mid-gap edge modes are obtained exactly, obeying the bulk-edge correspondence. Furthermore, we also introduce a local current in the context of biorthon…
In this study, the Landau--Zener (LZ) transition method is applied to investigate a weak non-adiabatic effect on the Zak phase and the topological charge pumping in the Rice--Mele model. The non-adiabatic effect is formulated using the LZ transfer matrix. The effective lower band wave function picks up the Stokes phase as well as the usual dynamical phase through two avoided crossings appearing in the two band instantaneous energy spectrum. The interference effect from the upper band has a decisive influence on the decay behavior of the lower band population. A non-adiabatic extension of the Z…
We investigate the effect of dissipation from a thermal environment on topological pumping in the periodically-driven Rice-Mele model. We report that dissipation can improve the robustness of pumping quantisation in a regime of finite driving frequencies. Specifically, in this regime, a low-temperature dissipative dynamics can lead to a pumped charge that is much closer to the Thouless quantised value, compared to a coherent evolution. We understand this effect in the Floquet framework: dissipation increases the population of a Floquet band which shows a topological winding, where pumping is e…

We investigate the onset of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry breaking in non-Hermitian tight-binding lattices with spatially-extended loss/gain regions in presence of an advective term. Similarly to the instability properties of hydrodynamic open flows, it is shown that $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking can be either absolute or convective. In the former case, an initially-localized wave packet shows a secular growth with time at any given spatial position, whereas in the latter case the growth is observed in a reference frame moving at some drift velocity while decay occurs at any fixed s…
We investigate the effect of disorder on a gapped crystalline system by introducing a class of local quantities for an energy band, which is referred as to band correlation function (BCF) and is the sum of correlation functions for all eigenstates of the band. We show that the BCFs are robust in the presence of disorder if the band gap is not collapse. The eigenstate set of an energy band can be almost completely mapped onto the perturbated eigenstate set, referred as to quasi-closed mapping, when it is sufficiently isolated from other bands. Some features relate to translational symmetry may …
The study of topological effects in physics is a hot area, and only recently researchers were able to address the important issues of topological properties of interacting quantum systems. But it is still a great challenge to describe multi-particle and interaction effects. Here, we introduce multi-particle Wannier states for interacting systems with co-translational symmetry. We reveal how the shift of multi-particle Wannier state relates to the multi-particle Chern number, and study the two-boson Thouless pumping in an interacting Rice-Mele model. In addition to the bound-state Thouless pump…
Topological insulators have inspired the study with various quantum simulators. Exploiting the tunability of the qubit frequency and qubit-qubit coupling, we show that a superconducting qubit chain can simulate various topological band models. When the system is restricted to the single-spin excitation subspace, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model can be equivalently simulated by alternating the coupling strength between neighboring qubits. The existence of topological edge states in this qubit chain is demonstrated in the quench dynamics after the first qubit is excited. This excitation prop…

We show that two particles interacting via spin exchange exhibit topological features found in one-dimensional single particle lattice models. This is accomplished by absorbing all of the spatial degrees of freedom of the lattices into the spin degrees of freedom of the two particles. Comparing the spin system with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we show the existence of topologically protected edge spin states and establish the bulk-edge correspondence. Modifying the spin system with a chiral symmetry breaking term results in it resembling the Rice-Mele model and can therefore act as a Thoule…
Quantized particle or spin transport upon cyclic parameter variations, determined by topological invariants, is a key signature of Chern insulators in the ground state. While measurable many-body observables exist that preserve the integrity of topological invariants also at finite temperature, quantized transport is generically lost. We here show that a coupling of a one-dimensional Chern insulator at arbitrary finite temperature to an auxiliary lattice can induce quantized transport determined by the finite-temperature invariant. We show for the example of a Rice-Mele model that the spatial …
We introduce a classification scheme for symmetry protected topological phases applicable to stationary states of open systems based on a generalization of the many-body polarization. The polarization can be used to probe the topological properties of non-interacting and interacting closed and open systems as well and remains a meaningful quantity even in the presence of moderate particle-number fluctuations. As examples, we discuss two open-system versions of a topological Thouless pump in the steady state of one-dimensional lattices driven by Markovian reservoirs. In the analogous unitary sy…
Pumps are transport mechanisms in which direct currents result from a cyclic evolution of the potential. As Thouless has shown, the pumping process can have topological origins, when considering the motion of quantum particles in spatially and temporally periodic potentials. However, the periodic evolution that drives these pumps has always been assumed to be imparted from outside, as was the case in the experimental systems studied so far. Here we report on an emergent mechanism for pumping in a quantum gas coupled to an optical resonator, where we observe a particle current without applying …
We propose a scheme comprising an array of anisotropic optical waveguides, embedded in a gas of cold atoms, which can be tuned from a Hermitian to an odd-PT -- symmetric configuration through the manipulation of control and assistant laser fields. We show that the system can be controlled by tuning intra -- and inter-cell coupling coefficients, enabling the creation of topologically distinct phases and linear topological edge states. The waveguide array, characterized by a quadrimer primitive cell, allows for implementing transitions between Hermitian and odd-PT -symmetric configurations, brok…
We systematically study the topology of the exceptional point (EP) in the finite non-Hermitian system. Based on the concrete form of the Berry connection, we demonstrate that the exceptional line (EL), at which the eigenstates coalesce, can act as a vortex filament. The direction of the EL can be identified by the corresponding Berry curvature. In this context, such a correspondence makes the topology of the EL clear at a glance. As an example, we apply this finding to the non-Hermitian Rice-Mele (RM) model, the non-Hermiticity of which arises from the staggered on-site complex potential. The …
The usual Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with an even number of lattice sites possesses two degenerate zero energy modes. The degeneracy of the zero energy modes leads to the mixing between the topological left and right edge states, which makes it difficult to implement the state transfer via topological edge channel. Here, enlightened by the Rice-Male topological pumping, we find that the staggered periodic next-nearest neighbor hoppings can also separate the initial mixed edge states, which ensures the state transfer between topological left and right edge states. Significantly, we construct an…
