One of the main limitations in state-of-the art solid-state quantum processors are qubit decoherence and relaxation due to noise in their local environment. For the field to advance towards full fault-tolerant quantum computing, a better understanding of the underlying microscopic noise sources is therefore needed. Adsorbates on surfaces, impurities at interfaces and material defects have been identified as sources of noise and dissipation in solid-state quantum devices. Here, we use an ultra-high vacuum package to study the impact of vacuum loading, UV-light exposure and ion irradiation treatments on coherence and slow parameter fluctuations of flux tunable superconducting transmon qubits. We analyse the effects of each of these surface treatments by comparing averages over many individual qubits and measurements before and after treatment. The treatments studied do not significantly impact the relaxation rate $Γ_1$ and the echo dephasing rate $Γ_2^\textrm{e}$, except for Ne ion bombardment which reduces $Γ_1$. In contrast, flux noise parameters are improved by removing magnetic adsorbates from the chip surfaces with UV-light and NH$_3$ treatments. Additionally, we demonstrate that SF$_6$ ion bombardment can be used to adjust qubit frequencies in-situ and post fabrication without affecting qubit coherence at the sweet spot.
The efficient implementation of many-body interactions in superconducting circuits allows for the realization of multipartite entanglement and topological codes, as well as the efficient simulation of highly correlated fermionic systems. We propose the engineering of fast multiqubit interactions with tunable transmon-resonator couplings. This dynamics is obtained by the modulation of magnetic fluxes threading superconducting quantum interference device loops embedded in the transmon devices. We consider the feasibility of the proposed implementation in a realistic scenario and discuss potentia…
Implementation of high-fidelity two-qubit operations is a key ingredient for scalable quantum error correction. In superconducting qubit architectures tunable buses have been explored as a means to higher fidelity gates. However, these buses introduce new pathways for leakage. Here we present a modified tunable bus architecture appropriate for fixed-frequency qubits in which the adiabaticity restrictions on gate speed are reduced. We characterize this coupler on a range of two-qubit devices achieving a maximum gate fidelity of $99.85\%$. We further show the calibration is stable over one day.
In this work we analyze the implementation of a control-phase gate through the resonance between the $|11\rangle$ and $|20\rangle$ states of two statically coupled transmons. We find that there are many different controls for the transmon frequency that implement the same gate with fidelities around $99.8\%$ ($T_1=T_2^{*}=17$ $μ$s) and $99.99\%$ ($T_1=T_2^{*}=300$ $μ$s) within a time that approaches the theoretical limit. All controls can be brought to this accuracy by calibrating the waiting time and the destination frequency near the $|11\rangle-|20\rangle$ resonance. However, some controls,…
We analyse the implementation of a fast nonadiabatic CZ gate between two transmon qubits with tuneable coupling. The gate control method is based on a theory of dynamical invariants which leads to reduced leakage and robustness against decoherence. The gate is based on a description of the resonance between the $|11\rangle$ and $|20\rangle$ using an effective Hamiltonian with the 6 lowest energy states. A modification of the invariants method allows us to take into account the higher-order perturbative corrections of this effective model. This enables a gate fidelity several orders of magnitud…
Simulations and analytical calculations that aim to describe flux-tunable transmons are usually based on effective models of the corresponding lumped-element model. However, when a control pulse is applied, in most cases it is not known how much the predictions made with the effective models deviate from the predictions made with the original lumped-element model. In this work we compare the numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for both the effective and the lumped-element models, for microwave and unimodal control pulses (external fluxes). These control pulses are us…

We present the design of an inductively shunted transmon qubit with flux-tunable coupling to an embedded harmonic mode. This circuit construction offers the possibility to flux-choose between pure transverse and pure longitudinal coupling, that is coupling to the $σ_x$ or $σ_z$ degree of freedom of the qubit. While transverse coupling is the coupling type that is most commonly used for superconducting qubits, the inherently different longitudinal coupling has some remarkable advantages both for readout and for the scalability of a circuit. Being able to choose between both kinds of coupling in…
In the gate model of quantum computing, a program is typically decomposed into a sequence of 1- and 2-qubit gates that are realized as control pulses acting on the system. A key requirement for a scalable control system is that the qubits are addressable - that control pulses act only on the targeted qubits. The presence of control crosstalk makes this addressability requirement difficult to meet. In order to provide metrics that can drive requirements for decreasing crosstalk, we present three measurements that directly quantify the DC and AC flux crosstalk present between tunable transmons, …
Single-photon sources are of great interest because they are key elements in different promising applications of quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate a highly efficient tunable on-demand microwave single-photon source based on a transmon qubit with the intrinsic emission efficiency above 98$\%$. The high efficiency ensures a negligible pure dephasing rate and the necessary condition for generation of indistinguishable photons. We provide an extended discussion and analysis of the efficiency of the photon generation. To further experimentally confirm the single-photon property of the sourc…
Generating high-fidelity, tunable entanglement between qubits is crucial for realizing gate-based quantum computation. In superconducting circuits, tunable interactions are often implemented using flux-tunable qubits or coupling elements, adding control complexity and noise sources. Here, we realize a tunable $ZZ$ interaction between two transmon qubits with fixed frequencies and fixed coupling, induced by driving both transmons off-resonantly. We show tunable coupling over one order of magnitude larger than the static coupling, and change the sign of the interaction, enabling cancellation of …

This thesis is set in the framework of superconducting transmon-type qubit architectures with special focus on two important types of coupling between qubits and harmonic resonators: transverse and longitudinal coupling. We will see that longitudinal coupling offers some remarkable advantages with respect to scalability and readout. This thesis will focus on a design, which combines both these coupling types in a single circuit and provides the possibility to choose between pure transverse and pure longitudinal or have both at the same time. We will start with an introduction to circuit quanti…
Superconducting qubits utilize the strong non-linearity of the Josephson junctions. Control over the Josephson nonlinearity, either by a current bias or by the magnetic flux, can be a valuable resource that brings tunability in the hybrid system consisting of superconducting qubits. To enable such a control, here we incorporate a fast-flux line for a frequency tunable transmon qubit in 3D cavity architecture. We investigate the flux-dependent dynamic range, relaxation from unconfined states, and the bandwidth of the flux-line. Using time-domain measurements, we probe transmon's relaxation from…
Although two-qubit entangling gates are necessary for universal quantum computing, they are notoriously difficult to implement with high fidelity. Recently, tunable couplers have become a key component for realizing high-fidelity two-qubit gates in superconducting quantum computers. However, it is still difficult to achieve tunable coupling free of unwanted residual coupling for highly detuned qubits, which are desirable for mitigating qubit-frequency crowding or errors due to crosstalk between qubits. We thus propose a design for this kind of tunable coupler, which we call a double-transmon c…

The SQUID is coupled to a readout cavity made of molybdenum rhenium (MoRe), whose response at high power …

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been realized in atomic systems, but fulfilling the EIT conditions for artificial atoms made from superconducting circuits is a more difficult task. Here we report an experimental observation of the EIT in a tunable three-dimensional transmon by probing the cavity transmission. To fulfill the EIT conditions, we tune the transmon to adjust its damping rates by utilizing the effect of the cavity on the transmon states. From the experimental observations, we clearly identify the EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) regimes as well as the transit…
We study the slowing, storing and releasing of microwave pulses in a superconducting circuits composed of two coplanar waveguide resonators and a superconducting transmon-type qubit. The quantum interference analogy to electromagnetically induced transparency is created in two coupled resonators. By tuning the resonance frequency of the transmon, we dynamically tune the effective coupling between the resonators. Via the modulation of the coupling, we show the tunable true time delay of microwave pulses at the single-photon level. We also store the microwave field in a high-Q resonator and rele…
In the circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture, both the resonance frequency and the coupling of superconducting qubits to microwave field modes can be controlled via external electric and magnetic fields to explore qubit -- photon dynamics in a wide parameter range. Here, we experimentally demonstrate and analyze a scheme for tuning the coupling between a transmon qubit and a microwave resonator using a single coherent drive tone. We treat the transmon as a three-level system with the qubit subspace defined by the ground and the second excited states. If the drive frequency matches the d…

We characterize highly coherent transmon qubits fabricated with a direct-write photolithography system. Multi-layer evaporation and oxidation allows us to change the critical current density by reducing the effective tunneling area and increasing the barrier thickness. Surface treatments before resist application and again before evaporation result in high coherence devices. With optimized surface treatments we achieve energy relaxation $T_1$ times in excess of $80\ μ$s for three dimensional transmon qubits with Josephson junction lithographic areas of 2 $μ\mathrm{m}^2$.

Flux-tunable qubits are a useful resource for superconducting quantum processors. They can be used to perform cPhase gates, facilitate fast reset protocols, avoid qubit-frequency collisions in large processors, and enable certain fast readout schemes. However, flux-tunable qubits suffer from a trade-off between their tunability range and sensitivity to flux noise. Optimizing this trade-off is particularly important for enabling fast, high-fidelity, all-microwave cross-resonance gates in large, high-coherence processors. This is mainly because cross-resonance gates set stringent conditions on t…
High-performance two-qubit gates have been reported with superconducting qubits coupled via a single-transmon coupler (STC). Most of them are implemented for qubits with a small detuning since reducing residual $ZZ$ coupling for highly detuned qubits by an STC is challenging. In terms of the frequency crowding and crosstalk, however, highly detuned qubits are desirable. Here, we numerically demonstrate a high-performance parametric gate for highly detuned fixed-frequency qubits using a recently proposed tunable coupler called a double-transmon coupler (DTC). Applying an ac flux pulse, we can p…
We report the characterization of a two-qubit processor implemented with two capacitively coupled tunable superconducting qubits of the transmon type, each qubit having its own non-destructive single-shot readout. The fixed capacitive coupling yields the \sqrt{iSWAP} two-qubit gate for a suitable interaction time. We reconstruct by state tomography the coherent dynamics of the two-bit register as a function of the interaction time, observe a violation of the Bell inequality by 22 standard deviations after correcting readout errors, and measure by quantum process tomography a gate fidelity of 9…
Novel qubits with intrinsic noise protection constitute a promising route for improving the coherence of quantum information in superconducting circuits. However, many protected superconducting qubits exhibit relatively low transition frequencies, which could make their integration with conventional transmon circuits challenging. In this work, we propose and study a scheme for entangling a tunable transmon with a Cooper-pair parity-protected qubit, a paradigmatic example of a low-frequency protected qubit that stores quantum information in opposite Cooper-pair parity states on a superconductin…
The superconducting fluxonium circuit is an RF-SQUID-type flux qubit that uses a large inductance built from an array of Josephson junctions or a high kinetic inductance material. This inductance suppresses charge sensitivity exponentially and flux sensitivity quadratically. In contrast to the transmon qubit, the anharmonicity of fluxonium can be large and positive, allowing for better separation between the low energy qubit manifold of the circuit and higher-lying excited states. Here, we propose a tunable coupling scheme for implementing two-qubit gates on fixed-frequency fluxonium qubits, b…

We use machine learning techniques to design a 50 ns three-qubit flux-tunable controlled-controlled-phase gate with fidelity of >99.99% for nearest-neighbor coupled transmons in circuit quantum electrodynamics architectures. We explain our gate design procedure where we enforce realistic constraints, and analyze the new gate's robustness under decoherence, distortion, and random noise. Our controlled-controlled-phase gate in combination with two single-qubit gates realizes a Toffoli gate which is widely used in quantum circuits, logic synthesis, quantum error correction, and quantum games.
Utilizing optimal control to simulate a model Hamiltonian is an emerging strategy that leverages the intrinsic physics of a device with digital quantum simulation methods. Here we evaluate optimal control for probing the non-equilibrium properties of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states simulated with superconducting hardware. Assuming a tunable transmon architecture, we cast evolution of these SPT states as a series of one- and two-site pulse optimization problems that are solved in the presence of leakage constraints. From the generated pulses, we numerical simulate time-dependent mel…
