Modeling networks as different graph types and researching on route finding strategies, to avoid congestion in dense subnetworks via graph-theoretic approaches, contributes to overall blocking probability reduction in networks. Our main focus is to study methods for modeling congested subnetworks and graph density measures, in order to identify routes that avoid dense subgraphs for global congestion avoidance, along with covering related algorithmic issues.
Congestion is said to occur in the network when the resource demands exceed the capacity and packets are lost due to too much queuing in the network. During congestion, the network throughput may drop to zero and the path delay may become very high. A congestion control scheme helps the network to recover from the congestion state. A congestion avoidance scheme allows a network to operate in the region of low delay and high throughput. Such schemes prevent a network from entering the congested state. Congestion avoidance is a prevention mechanism while congestion control is a recovery mechanis…
Widespread use of computer networks and the use of varied technology for the interconnection of computers has made congestion a significant problem. In this report, we summarize our research on congestion avoidance. We compare the concept of congestion avoidance with that of congestion control. Briefly, congestion control is a recovery mechanism, while congestion avoidance is a prevention mechanism. A congestion control scheme helps the network to recover from the congestion state while a congestion avoidance scheme allows a network to operate in the region of low delay and high throughput wit…
The OSU scheme is a rate-based congestion avoidance scheme for ATM networks using explicit rate indication. This work was one of the first attempts to define explicit rate switch mechanisms and the Resource Management (RM) cell format in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. The key features of the scheme include explicit rate feedback, congestion avoidance, fair operation while maintaining high utilization, use of input rate as a congestion metric, O(1) complexity. This paper presents an overview of the scheme, presents those features of the scheme that have now become common features of…
An explicit rate indication scheme for congestion avoidance in computer and telecommunication networks is proposed. The sources monitor their load and provide the information periodically to the switches. The switches, in turn, compute the load level and ask the sources to adjust their rates up or down. The scheme achieves high link utilization, fair allocation of rates among contending sources and provides quick convergence. A backward congestion notification option is also provided. The conditions under which this option is useful are indicated.
Filtering packet traffic and rules of permit/denial of data packets into network nodes are granted by facilitating Access Control Lists (ACL). This paper proposes a procedure of adding a link load threshold value to the access control list rules option, which acts on the basis of threshold value. The ultimate goal of this enhanced ACL is to avoid congestion in targeted subnetworks. The link load threshold value allows to decide that packet traffic is rerouted by the router to avoid congestion, or packet drop happens on the basis of packet priorities. The packet rerouting in case of high traffi…

In heterogeneous networks, achieving congestion avoidance is difficult because the congestion feedback from one subnetwork may have no meaning to source on other other subnetworks. We propose using changes in round-trip delay as an implicit feedback. Using a black-box model of the network, we derive an expression for the optimal window as a function of the gradient of the delay-window curve. The problems of selfish optimum and social optimum are also addressed. It is shown that without a careful design, it is possible to get into a race condition during heavy congestion, where each user wants …
Adaptive routing algorithm has been employed in multichip interconnection networks in order to improve network performance. Does a algorithm use local or global network state? This is the key question in adaptive routing. In many traffic patterns, the ignorance of global network state, leading to routing selection based only on local congestion information, tends to violate global load balance. To attack the load balance issue in adapting routing, some global adaptive routing algorithms introduce a congestion propagation network to obtain global network status information, such as Regional Con…
As the Internet becomes increasingly heterogeneous, the issue of congestion avoidance and control becomes ever more important. And the queue length, end-to-end delays and link utilization is some of the important things in term of congestion avoidance and control mechanisms. In this work we continue to study the performances of the New-AIMD (Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease) mechanism as one of the core protocols for TCP congestion avoidance and control algorithm, we want to evaluate the effect of using the AIMD algorithm after developing it to find a new approach, as we called it the…
Given a bidirected ring with capacities and a demand graph, we present an approximation algorithm to the problem of finding the minimum $α$ such that there exists a feasible unsplittable routing of the demands after multiplying each capacity by $α$. We also give an approximation scheme to the problem.
Caching can be leveraged to significantly improve network performance and mitigate congestion. However, characterizing the optimal tradeoff between routing cost and cache deployment cost remains an open problem. In this paper, for a network with arbitrary topology and congestion-dependent nonlinear cost functions, we aim to jointly determine the cache deployment, content placement, and hop-by-hop routing strategies, so that the sum of routing cost and cache deployment cost is minimized. We tackle this NP-hard problem starting with a fixed-routing setting, and then to a general dynamic-routing …
In Heterogeneous mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) congestion occurs with limited resources. Due to the shared wireless channel and dynamic topology, packet transmissions suffer from interference and fading. In heterogeneous ad hoc networks, throughput via a given route is depending on the minimum data rate of all its links. In a route of links with various data rates, if a high data rate node forwards more traffic to a low data rate node, there is a chance of congestion, which leads to long queuing delays in such routes. Since hop count is used as a routing metric in traditional routing, it do …

Congestion is a problem of paramount importance in resource constrained Wireless Sensor Networks, especially for large networks, where the traffic loads exceed the available capacity of the resources. Sensor nodes are prone to failure and the misbehavior of these faulty nodes creates further congestion. The resulting effect is a degradation in network performance, additional computation and increased energy consumption, which in turn decreases network lifetime. Hence, the data packet routing algorithm should consider congestion as one of the parameters, in addition to the role of the faulty no…
This paper proposes an adaptive variant of Random Early Detection (RED) gateway queue management for packet-switched networks via a discrete state analog of the non-stationary Master Equation i.e. Markov process. The computation of average queue size, which appeared in the original RED algorithm, is altered by introducing a probability $P(l,t)$, which defines the probability of having $l$ number of packets in the queue at the given time $t$, and depends upon the previous state of the queue. This brings the advantage of eliminating a free parameter: queue weight, completely. Computation of tran…
The proliferation of cloud data center applications and network function virtualization (NFV) boosts dynamic and QoS dependent traffic into the data centers network. Currently, lots of network routing protocols are requirement agnostic, while other QoS-aware protocols are computationally complex and inefficient for small flows. In this paper, a computationally efficient congestion avoidance scheme, called CECT, for software-defined cloud data centers is proposed. The proposed algorithm, CECT, not only minimizes network congestion but also reallocates the resources based on the flow requirement…
We present a unified analytical framework within which power control, rate allocation, routing, and congestion control for wireless networks can be optimized in a coherent and integrated manner. We consider a multi-commodity flow model with an interference-limited physical-layer scheme in which power control and routing variables are chosen to minimize the sum of convex link costs reflecting, for instance, queuing delay. Distributed network algorithms where joint power control and routing are performed on a node-by-node basis are presented. We show that with appropriately chosen parameters, th…
In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN), a channel assignment has to balance the objectives of maintaining connectivity and increasing the aggregate bandwidth. The main aim of the channel assignment algorithm is to assign the channels to the network interfaces, from the given expected load on each virtual link. From the existing work done so far, we can examine that there is no combined solution of multi-channel assignment with routing and congestion control. In this paper, we propose a congestion control routing protocol along with multi-channel assignment. We use a traffic aware metric in this proto…
We consider the problem of routing packets across a multi-hop network consisting of multiple sources of traffic and wireless links while ensuring bounded expected delay. Each packet transmission can be overheard by a random subset of receiver nodes among which the next relay is selected opportunistically. The main challenge in the design of minimum-delay routing policies is balancing the trade-off between routing the packets along the shortest paths to the destination and distributing traffic according to the maximum backpressure. Combining important aspects of shortest path and backpressure r…
This paper reports on the first systematic study of congestion-aware routing algorithms for wireless mesh networks to achieve an improved end-end delay performance. In particular, we compare 802.11 compatible implementations of a set of congestion-aware routing protocols against our implementation of state of the art shortest path routing protocol (SRCR). We implement congestion-aware routing algorithms Backpressure (BP), Enhanced-Backpressure (E-BP) adapted from [1], [2] suitably adjusted for 802.11 implementation. We then propose and implement Congestion Diversity Protocol (CDP) adapted from…
This paper addresses the problem of reliable transmission of data through a sensor network. We focus on networks rapidly deployed in harsh environments. For these networks, important design requirements are fast data transmission and rapid network setup, as well as minimized energy consumption for increased network lifetime. We propose a novel broadcasting solution that accounts for the interference impact and the congestion level of the channel, in order to improve robustness, energy consumption and delay performance, compared to a benchmark routing protocol, the GRAB algorithm. Three solutio…
We present a simple yet effective routing strategy inspired by coverage control, which delays the onset of congestion on traffic networks, by introducing a control parameter. The routing algorithm allows a trade-off between the congestion level and the distance to the destination. Numerical verification of the strategy is provided on a number of representative examples in SUMO, a well known micro agent simulator used for the analysis of traffic networks. We find that it is crucial in many cases to tune the given control parameters to some optimal value in order to reduce congestion in the most…
A new era in wireless sensor network technology has been ushered in through the introduction of multimedia sensor networks, which has a major bottleneck in the form of network congestion. Congestion occurs when resources are in high demand during the active period while the data processing and transmission speeds lag behind the speed of the incoming traffic. This may disrupt normal network operations by buffer overflow, packet loss, increased latency, excessive energy consumption and even worse, a collapse of the entire operation. In this paper we propose a novel Trust Integrated Congestion-aw…
The innovative services empowered by the Internet of Things (IoT) require a seamless and reliable wireless infrastructure that enables communications within heterogeneous and dynamic low-power and lossy networks (LLNs). The Routing Protocol for LLNs (RPL) was designed to meet the communication requirements of a wide range of IoT application domains. However, a load balancing problem exists in RPL under heavy traffic-load scenarios, degrading the network performance in terms of delay and packet delivery. In this paper, we tackle the problem of load-balancing in RPL networks using a reinforcemen…
This dissertation is a study on the design and analysis of novel, optimal routing and rate control algorithms in wireless, mobile communication networks. Congestion control and routing algorithms upto now have been designed and optimized for wired or wireless mesh networks. In those networks, optimal algorithms (optimal in the sense that either the throughput is maximized or delay is minimized, or the network operation cost is minimized) can be engineered based on the classic time scale decomposition assumption that the dynamics of the network are either fast enough so that these algorithms es…
Mobile wireless networks are intrinsically more prone to link congestion and outright failures than wired networks. In this paper, we elaborate the resilient routing reconfiguration method of \cite{WangEtAl} and generalize it to accomodate point-to-multipoint links and wireless networks. By reframing link failures as traffic uncertainties, this technique allows essentially instantaneous rerouting around arbitrary link failures while preventing congestion. We illustrate the technique by identifying a critical bottleneck in a realistic model wireless network.
The centralized architecture in software-defined network (SDN) provides a global view of the underlying network, paving the way for enormous research in the area of SDN traffic engineering (SDN TE). This research focuses on the load balancing aspects of SDN TE, given that the existing reactive methods for data-plane load balancing eventually result in packet loss and proactive schemes for data plane load balancing do not address congestion propagation. In the proposed work, the SDN controller periodically monitors flow level statistics and utilization on each link in the network and over-utili…
In a dense Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, using a centralized algorithm for minimum-delay routing would incur significant signaling and computational overhead. In this work, we exploit the deterministic topology of the constellation to calculate the minimum-delay path between any two nodes in a satellite network. We propose a distributed probabilistic congestion control scheme to minimize end-to-end delay, which is built on top of the existing Datagram Routing Algorithm (DRA). The decision to route packets is taken based on the latest traffic information received from neighbour…
We present a study of transport on complex networks with routing based on local information. Particles hop from one node of the network to another according to a set of routing rules with different degrees of congestion awareness, ranging from random diffusion to rigid congestion-gradient driven flow. Each node can be either source or destination for particles and all nodes have the same routing capacity, which are features of ad-hoc wireless networks. It is shown that the transport capacity increases when a small amount of congestion awareness is present in the routing rules, and that it then…
Weaknesses in several recently proposed ideas about congestion control and avoidance in high-speed netwroks are identified. Both sides of the debate concerning prior reservation of resources versus walk-in service, open-loop control versus feedback control, rate control versus window control, and router-based control versus source-based control are presented. The circumstances under which backpressure is useful or not are discussed, and it is argued that a single congestion scheme is not sufficient, but that a combination of several schemes is required for complete congestion management in a n…
We develop distributed algorithms to allocate resources in multi-hop wireless networks with the aim of minimizing total cost. In order to observe the fundamental duplexing constraint that co-located transmitters and receivers cannot operate simultaneously on the same frequency band, we first devise a spectrum allocation scheme that divides the whole spectrum into multiple sub-bands and activates conflict-free links on each sub-band. We show that the minimum number of required sub-bands grows asymptotically at a logarithmic rate with the chromatic number of network connectivity graph. A simple …
In the current DVB generation, satellite terminals are expected to be interactive and capable of transmission in the return channel with satisfying quality. Considering the bursty nature of their traffic and the long propagation delay, the use of a random access technique is a viable solution for such a Medium Access Control (MAC) scenario. In this paper, random access communication design in DVB-RCS2 is considered with particular regard to the recently introduced Contention Resolution Diversity Slotted Aloha (CRDSA) technique. This paper presents a model for design and tackles some issues on …
Wireless sensor networks sense and monitor real-time events. They supervise a geographic area where a phenomenon is to be monitored. The data in sensor networks have different levels of priority and hence their criticality differs. In order to keep up the real time commitment, the applications need higher transmission rates and reliability in information delivery. In this work we propose a multipath routing algorithm which enables the reliable delivery of data. By controlling the scheduling rate, it is possible to prevent congestion and packet loss in the network. The algorithm provides an eff…
Congestion control and avoidance in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is a subject that has attracted a lot of research attention in the last decade. Besides rate and resource control, the utilization of mobile nodes has also been suggested as a way to control congestion. In this work, we present a Mobile Congestion Control (MobileCC) algorithm with two variations, to assist existing congestion control algorithms in facing congestion in WSNs. The first variation employs mobile nodes that create locally-significant alternative paths leading to the sink. The second variation employs mobile nodes t…
In this articlewestudy themulticast routing problem in all-opticalWDMnetworks under the spare light splitting constraint. To implement a multicast session, several light-trees may have to be used due to the limited fanouts of network nodes. Although many multicast routing algorithms have been proposed in order to reduce the total number of wavelength channels used (total cost) for a multicast session, the maximum number of wavelengths required in one fiber link (link stress) and the end-to-end delay are two parameters which are not always taken into consideration. It is known that the shortest…
Hybrid networks consisting of MANET nodes and cellular infrastructure have been recently proposed to improve the performance of military networks. Prior work has demonstrated the benefits of in-network content caching in a wired, Internet context. We investigate the problem of developing optimal routing and caching policies in a hybrid network supporting in-network caching with the goal of minimizing overall content-access delay. Here, needed content may always be accessed at a back-end server via the cellular infrastructure; alternatively, content may also be accessed via cache-equipped "clus…
In modern SD-WAN networks, a global controller continuously optimizes application and user intents by selecting the proper routing policies for each application. Nevertheless, the competition between flows can still occur at each overlay link and it may degrade Quality of Service (QoS). To mitigate performance degradations in case of congestion, QoS policies can also be dynamically optimized to limit the rate of low-priority flows and share the bandwidth among all flows in a fair manner. This demonstration presents a comprehensive control plane architecture to coordinate path selection and rat…
Due to the popularity of network applications, such as multimedia, online shopping, Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G, the contents cached in the routers are frequently replaced in Content-Centric Networking (CCN). Generally, cache miss causes numerous propagated packets to get the required content that deteriorates network congestion and delay the response time of consumers. Many caching strategies and routing policies were proposed to solve the problem. This paper presents an alternative solution by designing a query-based routing table update mechanism to increase the accuracy of routing tab…
The goal of traffic management is efficiently utilizing network resources via adapting of source sending rates and routes selection. Traditionally, this problem is formulated into a utilization maximization problem. The single-path routing scheme fails to react to instantaneous network congestion. Multi-path routing schemes thus have been proposed aiming at improving network efficiency. Unfortunately, the natural optimization problem to consider is concave but not strictly concave. It thus brings a huge challenge to design stable multi-path congestion control algorithms. In this paper, we prop…
Fast Congestion Notification (FN) is one of the proactive queue management mechanisms that practices congestion avoidance to help avoid the beginning of congestion by marking or dropping packets before the routers queue gets full; and exercises congestion control, when congestion avoidance fails, by increasing the rate of packet marking or dropping. Technically, FN avoids the queue overflows by controlling the instantaneous queue size below the optimal queue size, and control congestion by keeping the average arrival rate close to the outgoing link capacity. Upon arrival of each packet, FN use…
The recent emergence of navigational tools has changed traffic patterns and has now enabled new types of congestion-aware routing control like dynamic road pricing. Using the fundamental diagram of traffic flows - applied in macroscopic and mesoscopic traffic modeling - the article introduces a new N-player dynamic routing game with explicit congestion dynamics. The model is well-posed and can reproduce heterogeneous departure times and congestion spill back phenomena. However, as Nash equilibrium computations are PPAD-complete, solving the game becomes intractable for large but realistic numb…
Collaborative edge computing (CEC) is an emerging paradigm where heterogeneous edge devices (stakeholders) collaborate to fulfill computation tasks, such as model training or video processing, by sharing communication and computation resources. Nevertheless, the optimal data/result routing and computation offloading strategy in CEC with arbitrary topology still remains an open problem. In this paper, we formulate a partial-offloading and multi-hop routing model for arbitrarily divisible tasks. Each node individually decides the computation of the received data and the forwarding of data/result…
It is by now well-known that wireless networks with file arrivals and departures are stable if one uses alpha-fair congestion control and back-pressure based scheduling and routing. In this paper, we examine whether ?alpha-fair congestion control is necessary for flow-level stability. We show that stability can be ensured even with very simple congestion control mechanisms, such as a fixed window size scheme which limits the maximum number of packets that are allowed into the ingress queue of a flow. A key ingredient of our result is the use of the difference between the logarithms of queue le…
In Multi-Radio Multi-Channel (MRMC) Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN), Partially Overlapped Channels (POC) has been used to increase the parallel transmission. But adjacent channel interference is very severe in MRMC environment; it decreases the network throughput very badly. In this paper, we propose a Coefficient of Restitution based Cross layer Interference aware Routing protocol (CoRCiaR) to improve TCP performance in Wireless Mesh Networks. This approach comprises of two-steps: Initially, the interference detection algorithm is developed at MAC layer by enhancing the RTS/CTS method. Based on …
