This paper addresses the problem of reliable transmission of data through a sensor network. We focus on networks rapidly deployed in harsh environments. For these networks, important design requirements are fast data transmission and rapid network setup, as well as minimized energy consumption for increased network lifetime. We propose a novel broadcasting solution that accounts for the interference impact and the congestion level of the channel, in order to improve robustness, energy consumption and delay performance, compared to a benchmark routing protocol, the GRAB algorithm. Three solutions are proposed: P-GRAB, a probabilistic routing algorithm for interference mitigation, U-GRAB, a utility-based algorithm that adjusts to real-time congestion and UP-GRAB, a combination of P-GRAB and U-GRAB. It is shown that P-GRAB provides the best performance for geometry-aware networks while the U-GRAB approach is the best option for unreliable and unstable networks.
Modeling networks as different graph types and researching on route finding strategies, to avoid congestion in dense subnetworks via graph-theoretic approaches, contributes to overall blocking probability reduction in networks. Our main focus is to study methods for modeling congested subnetworks and graph density measures, in order to identify routes that avoid dense subgraphs for global congestion avoidance, along with covering related algorithmic issues.
Adaptive routing algorithm has been employed in multichip interconnection networks in order to improve network performance. Does a algorithm use local or global network state? This is the key question in adaptive routing. In many traffic patterns, the ignorance of global network state, leading to routing selection based only on local congestion information, tends to violate global load balance. To attack the load balance issue in adapting routing, some global adaptive routing algorithms introduce a congestion propagation network to obtain global network status information, such as Regional Con…
Given a bidirected ring with capacities and a demand graph, we present an approximation algorithm to the problem of finding the minimum $α$ such that there exists a feasible unsplittable routing of the demands after multiplying each capacity by $α$. We also give an approximation scheme to the problem.
Caching can be leveraged to significantly improve network performance and mitigate congestion. However, characterizing the optimal tradeoff between routing cost and cache deployment cost remains an open problem. In this paper, for a network with arbitrary topology and congestion-dependent nonlinear cost functions, we aim to jointly determine the cache deployment, content placement, and hop-by-hop routing strategies, so that the sum of routing cost and cache deployment cost is minimized. We tackle this NP-hard problem starting with a fixed-routing setting, and then to a general dynamic-routing …
In Heterogeneous mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) congestion occurs with limited resources. Due to the shared wireless channel and dynamic topology, packet transmissions suffer from interference and fading. In heterogeneous ad hoc networks, throughput via a given route is depending on the minimum data rate of all its links. In a route of links with various data rates, if a high data rate node forwards more traffic to a low data rate node, there is a chance of congestion, which leads to long queuing delays in such routes. Since hop count is used as a routing metric in traditional routing, it do …
Wireless sensor networks hold a great potential in the deployment of several applications of a paramount importance in our daily life. Video sensors are able to improve a number of these applications where new approaches adapted to both wireless sensor networks and video transport specific characteristics are required. The aim of this work is to provide the necessary bandwidth and to alleviate the congestion problem to video streaming. In this paper, we investigate various load repartition strategies for congestion control mechanism on top of a multipath routing feature. Simulations are perfor…
Congestion is a problem of paramount importance in resource constrained Wireless Sensor Networks, especially for large networks, where the traffic loads exceed the available capacity of the resources. Sensor nodes are prone to failure and the misbehavior of these faulty nodes creates further congestion. The resulting effect is a degradation in network performance, additional computation and increased energy consumption, which in turn decreases network lifetime. Hence, the data packet routing algorithm should consider congestion as one of the parameters, in addition to the role of the faulty no…
We present a unified analytical framework within which power control, rate allocation, routing, and congestion control for wireless networks can be optimized in a coherent and integrated manner. We consider a multi-commodity flow model with an interference-limited physical-layer scheme in which power control and routing variables are chosen to minimize the sum of convex link costs reflecting, for instance, queuing delay. Distributed network algorithms where joint power control and routing are performed on a node-by-node basis are presented. We show that with appropriately chosen parameters, th…
In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN), a channel assignment has to balance the objectives of maintaining connectivity and increasing the aggregate bandwidth. The main aim of the channel assignment algorithm is to assign the channels to the network interfaces, from the given expected load on each virtual link. From the existing work done so far, we can examine that there is no combined solution of multi-channel assignment with routing and congestion control. In this paper, we propose a congestion control routing protocol along with multi-channel assignment. We use a traffic aware metric in this proto…
We consider the problem of routing packets across a multi-hop network consisting of multiple sources of traffic and wireless links while ensuring bounded expected delay. Each packet transmission can be overheard by a random subset of receiver nodes among which the next relay is selected opportunistically. The main challenge in the design of minimum-delay routing policies is balancing the trade-off between routing the packets along the shortest paths to the destination and distributing traffic according to the maximum backpressure. Combining important aspects of shortest path and backpressure r…
Filtering packet traffic and rules of permit/denial of data packets into network nodes are granted by facilitating Access Control Lists (ACL). This paper proposes a procedure of adding a link load threshold value to the access control list rules option, which acts on the basis of threshold value. The ultimate goal of this enhanced ACL is to avoid congestion in targeted subnetworks. The link load threshold value allows to decide that packet traffic is rerouted by the router to avoid congestion, or packet drop happens on the basis of packet priorities. The packet rerouting in case of high traffi…
This paper reports on the first systematic study of congestion-aware routing algorithms for wireless mesh networks to achieve an improved end-end delay performance. In particular, we compare 802.11 compatible implementations of a set of congestion-aware routing protocols against our implementation of state of the art shortest path routing protocol (SRCR). We implement congestion-aware routing algorithms Backpressure (BP), Enhanced-Backpressure (E-BP) adapted from [1], [2] suitably adjusted for 802.11 implementation. We then propose and implement Congestion Diversity Protocol (CDP) adapted from…
We present a simple yet effective routing strategy inspired by coverage control, which delays the onset of congestion on traffic networks, by introducing a control parameter. The routing algorithm allows a trade-off between the congestion level and the distance to the destination. Numerical verification of the strategy is provided on a number of representative examples in SUMO, a well known micro agent simulator used for the analysis of traffic networks. We find that it is crucial in many cases to tune the given control parameters to some optimal value in order to reduce congestion in the most…
A new era in wireless sensor network technology has been ushered in through the introduction of multimedia sensor networks, which has a major bottleneck in the form of network congestion. Congestion occurs when resources are in high demand during the active period while the data processing and transmission speeds lag behind the speed of the incoming traffic. This may disrupt normal network operations by buffer overflow, packet loss, increased latency, excessive energy consumption and even worse, a collapse of the entire operation. In this paper we propose a novel Trust Integrated Congestion-aw…
The innovative services empowered by the Internet of Things (IoT) require a seamless and reliable wireless infrastructure that enables communications within heterogeneous and dynamic low-power and lossy networks (LLNs). The Routing Protocol for LLNs (RPL) was designed to meet the communication requirements of a wide range of IoT application domains. However, a load balancing problem exists in RPL under heavy traffic-load scenarios, degrading the network performance in terms of delay and packet delivery. In this paper, we tackle the problem of load-balancing in RPL networks using a reinforcemen…
This dissertation is a study on the design and analysis of novel, optimal routing and rate control algorithms in wireless, mobile communication networks. Congestion control and routing algorithms upto now have been designed and optimized for wired or wireless mesh networks. In those networks, optimal algorithms (optimal in the sense that either the throughput is maximized or delay is minimized, or the network operation cost is minimized) can be engineered based on the classic time scale decomposition assumption that the dynamics of the network are either fast enough so that these algorithms es…
In this work, we face the issue of achieving an efficient dynamic mapping in vehicular networking scenarios, i.e., to obtain an accurate estimate of the positions and trajectories of connected vehicles in a certain area. State of the art solutions are based on the periodic broadcasting of the position information of the network nodes, with an inter-transmission period set by a congestion control scheme. However, the movements and maneuvers of vehicles can often be erratic, making transmitted data inaccurate or downright misleading. To address this problem, we propose to adopt a dynamic transmi…
Mobile wireless networks are intrinsically more prone to link congestion and outright failures than wired networks. In this paper, we elaborate the resilient routing reconfiguration method of \cite{WangEtAl} and generalize it to accomodate point-to-multipoint links and wireless networks. By reframing link failures as traffic uncertainties, this technique allows essentially instantaneous rerouting around arbitrary link failures while preventing congestion. We illustrate the technique by identifying a critical bottleneck in a realistic model wireless network.
This paper studies the problem of broadcasting real-time flows in multi-hop wireless networks. We consider that each packet has a stringent deadline, and each node in the network obtains some utility based on the number of packets delivered to it on time for each flow. We propose a distributed protocol, the delegated-set routing (DSR) protocol, that incurs virtually no overhead of coordination among nodes. We also develop distributed algorithms that aim to maximize the total system utility under DSR. The utility of our DSR protocol and distributed algorithms are demonstrated by both theoretica…
We present a study of transport on complex networks with routing based on local information. Particles hop from one node of the network to another according to a set of routing rules with different degrees of congestion awareness, ranging from random diffusion to rigid congestion-gradient driven flow. Each node can be either source or destination for particles and all nodes have the same routing capacity, which are features of ad-hoc wireless networks. It is shown that the transport capacity increases when a small amount of congestion awareness is present in the routing rules, and that it then…
The centralized architecture in software-defined network (SDN) provides a global view of the underlying network, paving the way for enormous research in the area of SDN traffic engineering (SDN TE). This research focuses on the load balancing aspects of SDN TE, given that the existing reactive methods for data-plane load balancing eventually result in packet loss and proactive schemes for data plane load balancing do not address congestion propagation. In the proposed work, the SDN controller periodically monitors flow level statistics and utilization on each link in the network and over-utili…
In a dense Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, using a centralized algorithm for minimum-delay routing would incur significant signaling and computational overhead. In this work, we exploit the deterministic topology of the constellation to calculate the minimum-delay path between any two nodes in a satellite network. We propose a distributed probabilistic congestion control scheme to minimize end-to-end delay, which is built on top of the existing Datagram Routing Algorithm (DRA). The decision to route packets is taken based on the latest traffic information received from neighbour…
We develop distributed algorithms to allocate resources in multi-hop wireless networks with the aim of minimizing total cost. In order to observe the fundamental duplexing constraint that co-located transmitters and receivers cannot operate simultaneously on the same frequency band, we first devise a spectrum allocation scheme that divides the whole spectrum into multiple sub-bands and activates conflict-free links on each sub-band. We show that the minimum number of required sub-bands grows asymptotically at a logarithmic rate with the chromatic number of network connectivity graph. A simple …
Wireless sensor networks sense and monitor real-time events. They supervise a geographic area where a phenomenon is to be monitored. The data in sensor networks have different levels of priority and hence their criticality differs. In order to keep up the real time commitment, the applications need higher transmission rates and reliability in information delivery. In this work we propose a multipath routing algorithm which enables the reliable delivery of data. By controlling the scheduling rate, it is possible to prevent congestion and packet loss in the network. The algorithm provides an eff…
Hybrid networks consisting of MANET nodes and cellular infrastructure have been recently proposed to improve the performance of military networks. Prior work has demonstrated the benefits of in-network content caching in a wired, Internet context. We investigate the problem of developing optimal routing and caching policies in a hybrid network supporting in-network caching with the goal of minimizing overall content-access delay. Here, needed content may always be accessed at a back-end server via the cellular infrastructure; alternatively, content may also be accessed via cache-equipped "clus…
In modern SD-WAN networks, a global controller continuously optimizes application and user intents by selecting the proper routing policies for each application. Nevertheless, the competition between flows can still occur at each overlay link and it may degrade Quality of Service (QoS). To mitigate performance degradations in case of congestion, QoS policies can also be dynamically optimized to limit the rate of low-priority flows and share the bandwidth among all flows in a fair manner. This demonstration presents a comprehensive control plane architecture to coordinate path selection and rat…
Due to the popularity of network applications, such as multimedia, online shopping, Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G, the contents cached in the routers are frequently replaced in Content-Centric Networking (CCN). Generally, cache miss causes numerous propagated packets to get the required content that deteriorates network congestion and delay the response time of consumers. Many caching strategies and routing policies were proposed to solve the problem. This paper presents an alternative solution by designing a query-based routing table update mechanism to increase the accuracy of routing tab…
In queueing networks, it is well known that the throughput-optimal backpressure routing algorithm results in poor delay performance for light and moderate traffic loads. To improve delay performance, state-of-the-art backpressure routing algorithm (called BPmin [1]) exploits queue length information to direct packets to less congested routes to their destinations. However, BPmin algorithm estimates route congestion based on unrealistic assumption that every node in the network knows real-time global queue length information of all other nodes. In this paper, we propose multi-agent Q-learning a…
The goal of traffic management is efficiently utilizing network resources via adapting of source sending rates and routes selection. Traditionally, this problem is formulated into a utilization maximization problem. The single-path routing scheme fails to react to instantaneous network congestion. Multi-path routing schemes thus have been proposed aiming at improving network efficiency. Unfortunately, the natural optimization problem to consider is concave but not strictly concave. It thus brings a huge challenge to design stable multi-path congestion control algorithms. In this paper, we prop…
The recent emergence of navigational tools has changed traffic patterns and has now enabled new types of congestion-aware routing control like dynamic road pricing. Using the fundamental diagram of traffic flows - applied in macroscopic and mesoscopic traffic modeling - the article introduces a new N-player dynamic routing game with explicit congestion dynamics. The model is well-posed and can reproduce heterogeneous departure times and congestion spill back phenomena. However, as Nash equilibrium computations are PPAD-complete, solving the game becomes intractable for large but realistic numb…
Broadcast is a fundamental operation in networks, especially in wireless Mobile Ad Hoc NETworks (MANET). For example, some form of broadcasting is used by all on-demand MANET routing protocols, when there is uncertainty as to the location of the destination node, or for service discovery. Being such a basic operation of the networking protocols, the importance of efficient broadcasting has long been recognized by the networking community. Numerous papers proposed increasingly more efficient implementation of broadcasting, while other studies presented bounds on broadcast performance. In this w…
During route discovery of mobile ad hoc network, broadcasting of route request and route reply packets are the essential operations for finding the path between two ends. In such situations, intermediate node which may or may not belongs will participate in route discovery process, update routing table and rebroadcast the route discovery packets again to its neighboring nodes. Finally optimal path is found with minimum hops. This simply upsurges overhead and deteriorates the performance of routing. The proposed Petal Ant Routing (PAR) algorithm offers a low overhead by optimizing FANT and BANT…
Collaborative edge computing (CEC) is an emerging paradigm where heterogeneous edge devices (stakeholders) collaborate to fulfill computation tasks, such as model training or video processing, by sharing communication and computation resources. Nevertheless, the optimal data/result routing and computation offloading strategy in CEC with arbitrary topology still remains an open problem. In this paper, we formulate a partial-offloading and multi-hop routing model for arbitrarily divisible tasks. Each node individually decides the computation of the received data and the forwarding of data/result…
The dissemination of vehicle position data all over the network is a fundamental task in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) operations, as applications often need to know the position of other vehicles over a large area. In such cases, inter-vehicular communications should be exploited to satisfy application requirements, although congestion control mechanisms are required to minimize the packet collision probability. In this work, we face the issue of achieving accurate vehicle position estimation and prediction in a VANET scenario. State of the art solutions to the problem try to broadcast the…
It is by now well-known that wireless networks with file arrivals and departures are stable if one uses alpha-fair congestion control and back-pressure based scheduling and routing. In this paper, we examine whether ?alpha-fair congestion control is necessary for flow-level stability. We show that stability can be ensured even with very simple congestion control mechanisms, such as a fixed window size scheme which limits the maximum number of packets that are allowed into the ingress queue of a flow. A key ingredient of our result is the use of the difference between the logarithms of queue le…
In this paper, a new routing algorithm based on a flooding method is introduced. Flooding techniques have been used previously, e.g. for broadcasting the routing table in the ARPAnet [1] and other special purpose networks [3][4][5]. However, sending data using flooding can often saturate the network [2] and it is usually regarded as an inefficient broadcast mechanism. Our approach is to flood a very short packet to explore an optimal route without relying on a pre-established routing table, and an efficient flood control algorithm to reduce the signalling traffic overhead. This is an inherentl…
The proliferation of cloud data center applications and network function virtualization (NFV) boosts dynamic and QoS dependent traffic into the data centers network. Currently, lots of network routing protocols are requirement agnostic, while other QoS-aware protocols are computationally complex and inefficient for small flows. In this paper, a computationally efficient congestion avoidance scheme, called CECT, for software-defined cloud data centers is proposed. The proposed algorithm, CECT, not only minimizes network congestion but also reallocates the resources based on the flow requirement…
In this report, we consider how to dynamically select transmission bands and multi-hop routes for device-to-device (D2D) communications in co-existence with a cellular network overlay. Firstly, we consider different wireless routing algorithms, i.e. broadcasting-routing (BR) method, and shortest-path-routing (SPR) method. The results show that depending on the co-existence cellular users' outage constraint, different routing strategies have different merits. BR is acceptable at the low D2D user density but is terrible at high density. We also consider the channel band performance (Uplink band …
This paper proposes and evaluates a new position-based Parallel Routing Protocol (PRP) for simultaneously routing multiple data packets over disjoint paths in a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) for higher reliability and reduced communication delays. PRP views the geographical region where the MANET is located as a virtual 2-dimensional grid of cells. Cell-disjoint (parallel) paths between grid cells are constructed and used for building pre-computed routing tables. A single gateway node in each grid cell handles routing through that grid cell reducing routing overheads. Each node maintains updat…
In Multi-Radio Multi-Channel (MRMC) Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN), Partially Overlapped Channels (POC) has been used to increase the parallel transmission. But adjacent channel interference is very severe in MRMC environment; it decreases the network throughput very badly. In this paper, we propose a Coefficient of Restitution based Cross layer Interference aware Routing protocol (CoRCiaR) to improve TCP performance in Wireless Mesh Networks. This approach comprises of two-steps: Initially, the interference detection algorithm is developed at MAC layer by enhancing the RTS/CTS method. Based on …
We investigate the problem of optimal request routing and content caching in a heterogeneous network supporting in-network content caching with the goal of minimizing average content access delay. Here, content can either be accessed directly from a back-end server (where content resides permanently) or be obtained from one of multiple in-network caches. To access a piece of content, a user must decide whether to route its request to a cache or to the back-end server. Additionally, caches must decide which content to cache. We investigate the problem complexity of two problem formulations, whe…
Coupling regular topologies with optimized routing algorithms is key in pushing the performance of interconnection networks of HPC systems. In this paper we present Dmodc, a fast deterministic routing algorithm for Parallel Generalized Fat-Trees (PGFTs) which minimizes congestion risk even under massive topology degradation caused by equipment failure. It applies a modulo-based computation of forwarding tables among switches closer to the destination, using only knowledge of subtrees for pre-modulo division. Dmodc allows complete rerouting of topologies with tens of thousands of nodes in less …
In this work, we explore the performance of backpressure routing and scheduling for TCP flows over wireless networks. TCP and backpressure are not compatible due to a mismatch between the congestion control mechanism of TCP and the queue size based routing and scheduling of the backpressure framework. We propose a TCP-aware backpressure routing and scheduling that takes into account the behavior of TCP flows. TCP-aware backpressure (i) provides throughput optimality guarantees in the Lyapunov optimization framework, (ii) gracefully combines TCP and backpressure without making any changes to th…
