We study the problem of finding pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of the $\ell$-vertex cycle $C_\ell$ in the randomly perturbed graph model, which is the union of a deterministic $n$-vertex graph $G$ and the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. For $\ell \ge 3$ we prove that asymptotically almost surely $G \cup G(n,p)$ contains $\min \{δ(G), \lfloor n/\ell \rfloor \}$ pairwise vertex-disjoint cycles $C_\ell$, provided $p \ge C \log n/n$ for $C$ sufficiently large. Moreover, when $δ(G) \geαn$ with $0<α\le 1/\ell$ and $G$ is not `close' to the complete bipartite graph $K_{αn,(1-α) n}$, then $p \ge C/n$ suffices to get the same conclusion. This provides a stability version of our result. In particular, we conclude that $p \ge C/n$ suffices when $α>1/\ell$ for finding $\lfloor n/\ell \rfloor$ cycles $C_\ell$.
Our results are asymptotically optimal. They can be seen as an interpolation between the Johansson--Kahn--Vu Theorem for $C_\ell$-factors and the resolution of the El-Zahar Conjecture for $C_\ell$-factors by Abbasi.
We prove that for integers $2 \leq \ell < k$ and a small constant $c$, if a $k$-uniform hypergraph with linear minimum codegree is randomly `perturbed' by changing non-edges to edges independently at random with probability $p \geq O(n^{-(k-\ell)-c})$, then with high probability the resulting $k$-uniform hypergraph contains a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle. This complements a recent analogous result for Hamilton $1$-cycles due to Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov, and a comparable theorem in the graph case due to Bohman, Frieze and Martin.
Given a dense subset $A$ of the first $n$ positive integers, we provide a short proof showing that for $p=ω(n^{-2/3})$ the so-called {\sl randomly perturbed} set $A \cup [n]_p$ a.a.s. has the property that any $2$-colouring of it has a monochromatic Schur triple, i.e.\ a triple of the form $(a,b,a+b)$. This result is optimal since there are dense sets $A$, for which $A\cup [n]_p$ does not possess this property for $p=o(n^{-2/3})$.
We solve a problem of Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov [SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 31 (2017), 155-171] concerning the threshold for the containment of all bounded degree spanning trees in the model of randomly perturbed dense graphs. More precisely, we show that, if we start with a dense graph $G_α$ on $n$ vertices with $δ(G_α)\ge αn$ for $α>0$ and we add to it the binomial random graph $G(n,C/n)$, then with high probability the graph $G_α\cup G(n,C/n)$ contains copies of all spanning trees with maximum degree at most $Δ$ simultaneously, where $C$ depends only on $α$ and $Δ$.
Extremal properties of sparse graphs, randomly perturbed by the binomial random graph are considered. It is known that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ contains a complete minor of order $Ω(n/α(G))$. We prove that adding $ξn$ random edges, where $ξ> 0$ is arbitrarily small yet fixed, to an $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying $α(G) \leq ζ(ξ)n$ asymptotically almost surely results in a graph containing a complete minor of order $\tilde Ω\left( n/\sqrt{α(G)}\right)$; this result is tight up to the implicit logarithmic terms. For complete topological minors, we prove that there exists a constant $C>0$ such …
We study the problem of finding pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles in the randomly perturbed graph model, which is the union of any $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying a given minimum degree condition and the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. We prove that asymptotically almost surely $G \cup G(n,p)$ contains at least $\min\{δ(G), \lfloor n/3 \rfloor\}$ pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles, provided $p \ge C \log n/n$, where $C$ is a large enough constant. This is a perturbed version of an old result of Dirac. Our result is asymptotically optimal and answers a question of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RS…
Given an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $d n$ for some fixed $d > 0$, the distribution $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$ over the supergraphs of $G$ is referred to as a (random) {\sl perturbation} of $G$. We consider the distribution of edge-coloured graphs arising from assigning each edge of the random perturbation $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$ a colour, chosen independently and uniformly at random from a set of colours of size $r := r(n)$. We prove that such edge-coloured graph distributions a.a.s. admit rainbow Hamilton cycles whenever the edge-density of the random perturbation satisf…
For $k\ge 2$ and $r\ge 1$ such that $k+r\ge 4$, we prove that, for any $α>0$, there exists $ε>0$ such that the union of an $n$-vertex $k$-graph with minimum codegree $\left(1-\binom{k+r-2}{k-1}^{-1}+α\right)n$ and a binomial random $k$-graph $\mathbb{G}^{(k)}(n,p)$ with $p\ge n^{-\binom{k+r-2}{k-1}^{-1}-ε}$ on the same vertex set contains the $r^{\text{th}}$ power of a tight Hamilton cycle with high probability. This result for $r=1$ was first proved by McDowell and Mycroft.
We investigate Ramsey properties of a random graph model in which random edges are added to a given dense graph. Specifically, we determine lower and upper bounds on the function $p=p(n)$ that ensures that for any dense graph $G_n$ a.a.s. every 2-colouring of the edges of $G_n\cup G(n,p)$ admits a monochromatic copy of the complete graph $K_r$. These bounds are asymptotically sharp for the cases when $r\geq 5$ is odd and almost sharp when $r\geq 4$ is even. Our proofs utilise recent results on the threshold for asymmetric Ramsey properties in $G(n,p)$ and the method of dependent random choice.
For integers $k\ge 3$ and $1\le \ell\le k-1$, we prove that for any $α>0$, there exist $ε>0$ and $C>0$ such that for sufficiently large $n\in (k-\ell)\mathbb{N}$, the union of a $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum vertex degree $αn^{k-1}$ and a binomial random $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathbb{G}^{(k)}(n,p)$ with $p\ge n^{-(k-\ell)-ε}$ for $\ell\ge 2$ and $p\ge C n^{-(k-1)}$ for $\ell=1$ on the same vertex set contains a Hamiltonian $\ell$-cycle with high probability. Our result is best possible up to the values of $ε$ and $C$ and answers a question of Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov.
For integers $k \geq 3$ and $r\geq 2$, we show that for every $α> 0$, there exists $\varepsilon > 0$ such that the union of $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $αn$ and a binomial random $k$-uniform hypergraph $G^{(k)}(n,p)$ with $p\geq n^{-{\binom{k+r-2}{k-1}}^{-1}-\varepsilon}$ on the same vertex set contains the $r^{th}$ power of a tight Hamilton cycle with high probability. Moreover, a construction shows that one cannot take $\varepsilon > Cα$, where $C=C(k,r)$ is a constant. Thus the bound on $p$ is optimal up to the value of $\varepsilon$ and this answer…
Maker-Breaker games are played on a hypergraph $(X,\mathcal{F})$, where $\mathcal{F} \subseteq 2^X$ denotes the family of winning sets. Both players alternately claim a predefined amount of edges (called bias) from the board $X$, and Maker wins the game if she is able to occupy any winning set $F \in \mathcal{F}$. These games are well studied when played on the complete graph $K_n$ or on a random graph $G_{n,p}$. In this paper we consider Maker-Breaker games played on randomly perturbed graphs instead. These graphs consist of the union of a deterministic graph $G_α$ with minimum degree at leas…
A perfect $H$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ that together cover all the vertices in $G$. In this paper we investigate perfect $H$-tilings in a random graph model introduced by Bohman, Frieze and Martin in which one starts with a dense graph and then adds $m$ random edges to it. Specifically, for any fixed graph $H$, we determine the number of random edges required to add to an arbitrary graph of linear minimum degree in order to ensure the resulting graph contains a perfect $H$-tiling with high probability. Our proof utilises Szemerédi's …
We determine, up to a multiplicative constant, the optimal number of random edges that need to be added to a $k$-graph $H$ with minimum vertex degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ to ensure an $F$-factor with high probability, for any $F$ that belongs to a certain class $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-graphs, which includes, e.g., all $k$-partite $k$-graphs, $K_4^{(3)-}$ and the Fano plane. In particular, taking $F$ to be a single edge, this settles a problem of Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov [Combin. Probab. Comput. 25 (2016), 909--927]. We also address the case in which the host graph $H$ is not dense, indicating that s…
We give several results showing that different discrete structures typically gain certain spanning substructures (in particular, Hamilton cycles) after a modest random perturbation. First, we prove that adding linearly many random edges to a dense k-uniform hypergraph ensures the (asymptotically almost sure) existence of a perfect matching or a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof involves an interesting application of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma, which might be independently useful. We next prove that digraphs with certain strong expansion properties are pancyclic, and use this to show that addin…

A perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$ that together cover all the vertices in $G$. In this paper we consider perfect $K_r$-tilings in the setting of randomly perturbed graphs; a model introduced by Bohman, Frieze and Martin where one starts with a dense graph and then adds $m$ random edges to it. Specifically, given any fixed $0< α<1-1/r$ we determine how many random edges one must add to an $n$-vertex graph $G$ of minimum degree $δ(G) \geq αn$ to ensure that, asymptotically almost surely, the resulting graph contains a perfect $K_r$-tiling. A…
A classical result of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi states that every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(1/2+ o(1))n$ contains every $n$-vertex tree with maximum degree $O(n/\log{n})$ as a subgraph, and the bounds on the degree conditions are sharp. On the other hand, Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov recently proved that for every $n$-vertex graph $G_α$ with minimum degree at least $αn$ for any fixed $α>0$ and every $n$-vertex tree $T$ with bounded maximum degree, one can still find a copy of $T$ in $G_α$ with high probability after adding $O(n)$ randomly-chosen edges to $G_α$. We ex…
We study the model $G_α\cup G(n,p)$ of randomly perturbed dense graphs, where $G_α$ is any $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $αn$ and $G(n,p)$ is the binomial random graph. We introduce a general approach for studying the appearance of spanning subgraphs in this model using absorption. This approach yields simpler proofs of several known results. We also use it to derive the following two new results. For every $α>0$ and $Δ\ge 5$, and every $n$-vertex graph $F$ with maximum degree at most $Δ$, we show that if $p=ω(n^{-2/(Δ+1)})$ then $G_α\cup G(n,p)$ with high probability contains …
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, write $G \stackrel{\mathrm{rbw}}{\longrightarrow} H$ if $G$ has the property that every \emph{proper} colouring of its edges yields a \emph{rainbow} copy of $H$. We study the thresholds for such so-called \emph{anti-Ramsey} properties in randomly perturbed dense graphs, which are unions of the form $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$, where $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with edge-density at least $d >0$, and $d$ is independent of $n$. In a companion article, we proved that the threshold for the property $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p) \stackrel{\mathrm{rbw}}{\longrightarrow} K_\ell$ is $…
A graph $G$ is called universal for a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ if it contains every element $F \in \mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{F}(n,2)$ be the family of all graphs with maximum degree $2$. Ferber, Kronenberg, and Luh [Optimal Threshold for a Random Graph to be 2-Universal, to appear in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society] proved that there exists a $C$ such that for $p \ge C (n^{-2/3} \log^{1/3} n )$ the random graph $G(n,p)$ a.a.s is $\mathcal{F}(n,2)$-universal, which is asymptotically optimal. For any $n$-vertex graph $G_α$ with minimum degree $δ(G_α) \ge α…
Let $G$ be a graph obtained as the union of some $n$-vertex graph $H_n$ with minimum degree $δ(H_n)\geqαn$ and a $d$-dimensional random geometric graph $G^d(n,r)$. We investigate under which conditions for $r$ the graph $G$ will a.a.s. contain the $k$-th power of a Hamilton cycle, for any choice of $H_n$. We provide asymptotically optimal conditions for $r$ for all values of $α$, $d$ and $k$. This has applications in the containment of other spanning structures, such as $F$-factors.
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, write $G \stackrel{\mathrm{rbw}}{\longrightarrow} H$ if $G$ has the property that every {\sl proper} colouring of its edges yields a {\sl rainbow} copy of $H$. We study the thresholds for such so-called {\sl anti-Ramsey} properties in randomly perturbed dense graphs, which are unions of the form $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$, where $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with edge-density at least $d$, and $d$ is a constant that does not depend on $n$. Our results in this paper, combined with our results in a companion paper, determine the threshold for the property $G \cup \mathbb{G…
Given graphs $H_1,H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-Ramsey if for every colouring of the edges of $G$ with red and blue, there is a red copy of $H_1$ or a blue copy of $H_2$. In this paper we investigate Ramsey questions in the setting of randomly perturbed graphs: this is a random graph model introduced by Bohman, Frieze and Martin in which one starts with a dense graph and then adds a given number of random edges to it. The study of Ramsey properties of randomly perturbed graphs was initiated by Krivelevich, Sudakov and Tetali in 2006; they determined how many random edges must be added to a …
We study the existence of powers of Hamiltonian cycles in graphs with large minimum degree to which some additional edges have been added in a random manner. It follows from the theorems of Dirac and of Komlós, Sarközy, and Szemerédi that for every $k\geq 1$ and sufficiently large $n$ already the minimum degree $δ(G)\ge\tfrac{k}{k+1}n$ for an $n$-vertex graph $G$ alone suffices to ensure the existence of a $k$-th power of a Hamiltonian cycle. Here we show that under essentially the same degree assumption the addition of just $O(n)$ random edges ensures the presence of the $(k+1)$-st power of a…
We investigate the existence of powers of Hamiltonian cycles in graphs with large minimum degree to which some additional edges have been added in a random manner. For all integers $k\geq1$, $r\geq 0$, and $\ell\geq (r+1)r$, and for any $α>\frac{k}{k+1}$ we show that adding $O(n^{2-2/\ell})$ random edges to an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $αn$ yields, with probability close to one, the existence of the $(k\ell+r)$-th power of a Hamiltonian cycle. In particular, for $r=1$ and $\ell=2$ this implies that adding $O(n)$ random edges to such a graph $G$ already ensures the $(2k+…
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph, where $δ(G) \geq δn$ for some $δ:= δ(n)$. A result of Bohman, Frieze and Martin from 2003 asserts that if $α(G) = O \left(δ^2 n \right)$, then perturbing $G$ via the addition of $ω\left(\frac{\log(1/δ)}{δ^3} \right)$ random edges, asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s. hereafter) results in a Hamiltonian graph. This bound on the size of the random perturbation is only tight when $δ$ is independent of $n$ and deteriorates as to become uninformative when $δ= Ω\left(n^{-1/3} \right)$. We prove several improvements and extensions of the aforementioned result. First, k…
In this paper we study the randomly edge colored graph that is obtained by adding randomly colored random edges to an arbitrary randomly edge colored dense graph. In particular we ask how many colors and how many random edges are needed so that the resultant graph contains a fixed number of edge disjoint rainbow Hamilton cycles. We also ask when in the resultant graph every pair of vertices is connected by a rainbow path.
We study Hamiltonicity in graphs obtained as the union of a deterministic $n$-vertex graph $H$ with linear degrees and a $d$-dimensional random geometric graph $G^d(n,r)$, for any $d\geq1$. We obtain an asymptotically optimal bound on the minimum $r$ for which a.a.s. $H\cup G^d(n,r)$ is Hamiltonian. Our proof provides a linear time algorithm to find a Hamilton cycle in such graphs.
We consider the existence of patterned Hamilton cycles in randomly colored random graphs. Given a string $Π$ over a set of colors $\{1,2,\ldots,r\}$, we say that a Hamilton cycle is $Π$-colored if the pattern repeats at intervals of length $|Π|$ as we go around the cycle. We prove a hitting time for the existence of such a cycle. We also prove a hitting time result for a related notion of $Π$-connected.
We consider the number of crossings in a graph which is embedded randomly on a convex set of points. We give an estimate to the normal distribution in Kolmogorov distance which implies a convergence rate of order $n^{-1/2}$ for various families of graphs, including random chord diagrams or full cycles.
A rainbow subgraph of an edge-coloured graph has all edges of distinct colours. A random d-regular graph with d even, and having edges coloured randomly with d/2 of each of n colours, has a rainbow Hamilton cycle with probability tending to 1 as n tends to infinity, provided d is at least 8.
