In arXiv:2007.14415 we proved that the "flop-flop" autoequivalence can be realized as the spherical twist around a spherical functor whose source category arises naturally from the geometry. In this companion paper we study in detail some examples so to explicitly describe what the source category looks like. In some cases we are able to prove that the source category respects the known decomposition of the flop-flop autoequivalence, and therefore we tie up our geometric description with formal results which appear in the literature about gluing and splitting of spherical twists around spherical functors. The examples we treat completely are standard flops (both in the local model and in the family version), and Mukai flops. We also discuss the cases of Grassmannian flops, and the Abuaf flop.
Flops are birational transformations which, conjecturally, induce derived equivalences. In many cases an equivalence can be produced as pull-push via a resolution of the birational transformation; when this happens, we have a non-trivial autoequivalence of either sides of the flop known as the \emph{flop-flop autoequivalence}. We prove that such autoequivalence can be realised as the inverse of a spherical twist around a conservative, spherical functor in a natural way. More precisely, we prove that a natural, conservative spherical functor exists in a more general framework and that the flop-…
We study derived categories of Gorenstein varieties X and X^+ connected by a flop. We assume that the flopping contractions f: X \to Y, f^+: X^+ \to Y have fibers of dimension bounded by 1 and Y has canonical hypersurface singularities of multiplicity 2. We consider the fiber product W=X \times_Y X^+ with projections p: W \to X, q: W \to X^+ and prove that the flop functors F = Rq_* Lp^*: D^b(X) \to D^b(X^+), F^+= Rp_*Lq^*: D^b(X^+) \to D^b(X) are equivalences, inverse to those constructed by M. Van den Bergh. The composite F^+ \circ F: D^b(X) \to D^b(X) is a non-trivial auto-equivalence. When…
We find two natural spherical functors associated to the Kummer surface and analyse how their induced twists fit with Bridgeland's conjecture on the derived autoequivalence group of a complex algebraic K3 surface.
We show that if $X$ is a smooth quasi-projective $3$-fold admitting a flopping contraction, then the fundamental group of an associated simplicial hyperplane arrangement acts faithfully on the derived category of $X$. The main technical advance is to use torsion pairs as an efficient mechanism to track various objects under iterations of the flop functor (respectively, mutation functor). This allows us to relate compositions of the flop functor (respectively, mutation functor) to the theory of Deligne normal form, and to give a criterion for when a finite composition of $3$-fold flops can be u…
We construct new examples of derived autoequivalences for a family of higher-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. Specifically, we take the total spaces of certain natural vector bundles over Grassmannians G(r,d) of r-planes in a d-dimensional vector space, and define endofunctors of the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves associated to these varieties. In the case r=2 we show that these are autoequivalences using the theory of spherical functors. Our autoequivalences naturally generalize the Seidel-Thomas spherical twist for analogous bundles over projective spaces.
Given a quasi-projective 3-fold X with only Gorenstein terminal singularities, we prove that the flop functors beginning at X satisfy higher degree braid relations, with the combinatorics controlled by a real hyperplane arrangement H. This leads to a general theory, incorporating known special cases with degree 3 braid relations, in which we show that higher degree relations can occur even for two smooth rational curves meeting at a point. This theory yields an action of the fundamental group of the complexified complement of H on the derived category of X, for any such 3-fold that admits indi…
We study the relationship between the categorical entropy of the twist and cotwist functors along a spherical functor. In particular, we prove the categorical entropy of the twist functor coincides with that of the cotwist functor if the essential image of the right adjoint functor of the spherical functor contains a split-generator. We also see our results generalize the computations of the categorical entropy of spherical twists and $\mathbb{P}$-twists by Ouchi and Fan. As an application, we apply our results to the Gromov--Yomdin type conjecture by Kikuta--Takahashi.
We introduce a new class of autoequivalences that act on the derived categories of certain vector bundles over Grassmannians. These autoequivalences arise from Grassmannian flops: they generalize Seidel-Thomas spherical twists, which can be seen as arising from standard flops. We first give a simple algebraic construction, which is well-suited to explicit computations. We then give a geometric construction using spherical functors which we prove is equivalent.
This paper has been withdrawn and replaced by arXiv:1309.5035. In this paper we describe some examples of so called spherical functors between triangulated categories, which generalize the notion of a spherical object. We also give sufficient conditions for a collection of spherical functors to yield a weak representation of the category of tangles, and prove a structure theorem for such representations under certain restrictions.
Associated to a Mukai flop X ---> X' is on the one hand a sequence of equivalences D(X) -> D(X'), due to Kawamata and Namikawa, and on the other hand a sequence of autoequivalences of D(X), due to Huybrechts and Thomas. We work out a complete picture of the relationship between the two. We do the same for standard flops, relating Bondal and Orlov's derived equivalences to spherical twists, extending a well-known story for the Atiyah flop to higher dimensions.
For two DG-categories A and B we define the notion of a spherical Morita quasi-functor A -> B. We construct its associated autoequivalences: the twist T of D(B) and the co-twist F of D(A). We give powerful sufficiency criteria for a quasi-functor to be spherical and for the twists associated to a collection of spherical quasi-functors to braid. Using the framework of DG-enhanced triangulated categories, we translate all of the above to Fourier-Mukai transforms between the derived categories of algebraic varieties. This is a broad generalisation of the results on spherical objects in [ST01] and…
We consider certain universal functors on symmetric quotient stacks of Abelian varieties. In dimension two, we discover a family of $\mathbb{P}$-functors which induce new derived autoequivalences of Hilbert schemes of points on Abelian surfaces; a set of braid relations on a holomorphic symplectic sixfold; and a pair of spherical functors on the Hilbert square of an Abelian surface, whose twists are related to the well-known Horja twist. In dimension one, our universal functors are fully faithful, giving rise to a semiorthogonal decomposition for the symmetric quotient stack of an elliptic cur…
We describe in terms of spherical twists the Serre functors of many interesting semiorthogonal components, called residual categories, of the derived categories of projective varieties. In particular, we show the residual categories of Fano complete intersections are fractional Calabi--Yau up to a power of an explicit spherical twist. As applications, we compute the Serre dimensions of residual categories of Fano complete intersections, thereby proving a corrected version of a conjecture of Katzarkov and Kontsevich, and deduce the nonexistence of Serre invariant stability conditions when the d…
We study an admissible subcategory of the Bondal quiver which conjecturally does not admit any Bridgeland stability conditions. Specifically, we prove that its Serre functor coincides with the spherical twist associated with a $3$-spherical object. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the spherical objects, deduce the non-existence of Serre-invariant stability conditions, and construct a natural spherical functor from its structure as a categorical resolution of the nodal cubic curve.
Given a split $\mathbb{P}$-functor $F:\mathcal{D}^b(X) \to \mathcal{D}^b(Y)$ between smooth projective varieties, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the Hochschild cohomology of $X$, for it to become spherical on the total space of a deformation of $Y$, and explain how the spherical twist becomes the $\mathbb{P}$-twist on the special fibre. These results generalise the object case, that is when $X$ is a point, which was studied previously by Huybrechts and Thomas, and we show how they apply to the $\mathbb{P}$-functor associated to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 …
We study sets of commuting reflection functors in the derived category of sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties. We show that such a collection is determined by a set of mutually orthogonal spherical objects. We also show that when the spherical objects are locally-free sheaves then the kernel of the composite transform parametrizes properly torsion-free with zero-dimensional singularity sets and conversely that such a kernel gives rise to a collection of mutually orthogonal spherical vector bundles. We do this using a more detailed analysis of the reason why spherical twists give equivalences.
E. Segal proved that any autoequivalence of an enhanced triangulated category can be realised as a spherical twist. However, when exhibiting an autoequivalence as a spherical twist one has various choices for the source category of the spherical functor. We describe a construction that realises the composition of two spherical twists as the twist around a single spherical functor whose source category semiorthogonally decomposes into the source categories for the spherical functors we started with. We give a description of the cotwist for this spherical functor and prove, in the special case w…
A categorical formalism is introduced for studying various features of the symplectic geometry of Lefschetz fibrations and the algebraic geometry of Tyurin degenerations. This approach is informed by homological mirror symmetry, derived noncommutative geometry, and the theory of Fukaya categories with coefficients in a perverse Schober. The main technical results include (i) a comparison between the notion of relative Calabi-Yau structures and a certain refinement of the notion of a spherical functor, (ii) a local-to-global gluing principle for constructing Calabi-Yau structures, and (iii) the…
We show that for many moduli spaces M of torsion sheaves on K3 surfaces S, the functor D(S) -> D(M) induced by the universal sheaf is a P-functor, hence can be used to construct an autoequivalence of D(M), and that this autoequivalence can be factored into geometrically meaningful equivalences associated to abelian fibrations and Mukai flops. Along the way we produce a derived equivalence between two compact hyperkaehler 2g-folds that are not birational, for every g >= 2. We also speculate about an approach to showing that birational moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces are derived-equivale…
Given an exact functor between triangulated categories which admits both adjoints and whose cotwist is either zero or an autoequivalence, we show how to associate a unique full triangulated subcategory of the codomain on which the functor becomes either Frobenius or spherical, respectively. We illustrate our construction with examples coming from projective bundles and smooth blowups. This work generalises results about spherical subcategories obtained by Martin Kalck, David Ploog and the first author.
We study Dehn twists along Lagrangian submanifolds that are finite quotients of spheres. We decribe the induced auto-equivalences to the derived Fukaya category and explain its relation to twists along spherical functors.
We develop the theory of semi-orthogonal decompositions and spherical functors in the framework of stable $\infty$-categories. Building on this, we study the relative Waldhausen S-construction $S_\bullet(F)$ of a spherical functor $F$ and equip it with a natural paracyclic structure (``rotational symmetry''). This fulfills a part of the general program to provide a rigorous account of perverse schobers which are (thus far conjectural) categorifications of perverse sheaves. Namely, in terms of our previous identification of perverse sheaves on Riemann surfaces with Milnor sheaves, the relative …
Perverse schober defined by Kapranov--Schechtman is a categorification of the notion of perverse sheaf. In their definition, a key ingredient is certain purity property of perverse sheaves. In this short note, we attempt to describe a real analogue of the above story, as categorification of Legendrian points/knots. The notion turns out to include various notions such as semi-orthogonal decomposition, mutation braiding, spherical functor, N-spherical functor, and irregular perverse schober.
We prove that the action of a generalized braid group on an enhanced triangulated categories, generated by spherical twist functors along an ADE-configuration of $ω$-spherical objects, is faithful for any integer $ω\neq 1$.
We construct a new autoequivalence of the derived category of the Hilbert scheme of n points on a K3 surface, and of the variety of lines on a smooth cubic 4-fold. For Hilb^2 and the variety of lines, we use the theory of spherical functors; to deal with Hilb^n for n > 2 we develop a theory of P-functors. We conjecture that the same construction yields an autoequivalence for any moduli space of sheaves on a K3 surface. In an appendix we give a cohomology and base change criterion which is well-known to experts, but not well-documented.
Given a DG-category A we introduce the bar category of modules Modbar(A). It is a DG-enhancement of the derived category D(A) of A which is isomorphic to the category of DG A-modules with A-infinity morphisms between them. However, it is defined intrinsically in the language of DG-categories and requires no complex machinery or sign conventions of A-infinity categories. We define for these bar categories Tensor and Hom bifunctors, dualisation functors, and a convolution of twisted complexes. The intended application is to working with DG-bimodules as enhancements of exact functors between tria…
In this short note we observe that, for purely formal reasons, any autoequivalence can be constructed as a twist around a spherical functor. As an example, we show how the P-twists constructed by Huybrechts and Thomas can be formulated as spherical twists.
We show that for every smooth projective surface X and every $n\ge 2$ the push-forward along the diagonal embedding gives a $P^{n-1}$-functor into the $S_n$-equivariant derived category of X^n. Using the Bridgeland--King--Reid--Haiman equivalence this yields a new autoequivalence of the derived category of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case that the canonical bundle of X is trivial and n=2 this autoequivalence coincides with the known EZ-spherical twist induced by the boundary of the Hilbert scheme. We also generalise the 16 spherical objects on the Kummer surface given by the ex…
This note is based on a talk given at String-Math 2012 in Bonn, on a joint paper with Ed Segal. We exhibit derived equivalences corresponding to certain Grassmannian flops. The construction of these equivalences is inspired by work of Herbst-Hori-Page on brane transport for gauged linear sigma models: in particular, we define 'windows' corresponding to their grade restriction rules. We then show how composing our equivalences produces interesting autoequivalences, which we describe as twists and cotwists about certain spherical functors. Our proofs use natural long exact sequences of bundles o…
For classical dynamical systems, the polynomial entropy serves as a refined invariant of the topological entropy. In the setting of categorical dynamical systems, that is, triangulated categories endowed with an endofunctor, we develop the theory of categorical polynomial entropy, refining the categorical entropy defined by Dimitrov-Haiden-Katzarkov-Kontsevich. We justify this notion by showing that for an automorphism of a smooth projective variety, the categorical polynomial entropy of the pullback functor on the derived category coincides with the polynomial growth rate of the induced actio…
