E. Segal proved that any autoequivalence of an enhanced triangulated category can be realised as a spherical twist. However, when exhibiting an autoequivalence as a spherical twist one has various choices for the source category of the spherical functor. We describe a construction that realises the composition of two spherical twists as the twist around a single spherical functor whose source category semiorthogonally decomposes into the source categories for the spherical functors we started with. We give a description of the cotwist for this spherical functor and prove, in the special case when our starting twists are around spherical objects, that the cotwist is the Serre functor (up to a shift). We finish with an explicit treatment for the case of P-objects.
In this short note we observe that, for purely formal reasons, any autoequivalence can be constructed as a twist around a spherical functor. As an example, we show how the P-twists constructed by Huybrechts and Thomas can be formulated as spherical twists.
We study Dehn twists along Lagrangian submanifolds that are finite quotients of spheres. We decribe the induced auto-equivalences to the derived Fukaya category and explain its relation to twists along spherical functors.
We prove that the action of a generalized braid group on an enhanced triangulated categories, generated by spherical twist functors along an ADE-configuration of $ω$-spherical objects, is faithful for any integer $ω\neq 1$.
This note gives a generalization of spherical twists, and describe the autoequivalences associated to certain non-spherical objects. Typically these are obtained by deforming the structure sheaves of (0,-2)-curves on threefolds, or deforming $\mathbb{P}$-objects introduced by D.Huybrecht and R.Thomas
We are interested in the 3-Calabi-Yau categories $\mathcal{D}$ arising from quivers with potential associated to a triangulated marked surface $\mathbf{S}$ (without punctures). We prove that the spherical twist group ST of $\mathcal{D}$ is isomorphic to a subgroup (generated by braid twists) of the mapping class group of the decorated marked surface $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$. Here $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$ is the surface obtained from $\mathbf{S}$ by decorating with a set of decorated points, where the number of points equals the number of triangles in any triangulations of $\mathbf{S}…
Exceptional sequences of line bundles on a smooth projective toric surface are automatically full when they can be constructed via augmentation. By using spherical twists, we give examples that there are also exceptional sequences which can not be constructed this way but are nevertheless full.
In this paper, we compute categorical entropy of spherical twists. In particular, we prove that Gromov-Yomdin type conjecture holds for spherical twists. Moreover, we construct counterexamples of Gromov-Yomdin type conjecture for K3 surfaces modifying Fan's construction for even higher dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. The appendix, by Arend Bayer, shows non-emptyness of complements of a number of spherical objects in the derived categories of K3 surfaces.
We construct new examples of derived autoequivalences for a family of higher-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. Specifically, we take the total spaces of certain natural vector bundles over Grassmannians G(r,d) of r-planes in a d-dimensional vector space, and define endofunctors of the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves associated to these varieties. In the case r=2 we show that these are autoequivalences using the theory of spherical functors. Our autoequivalences naturally generalize the Seidel-Thomas spherical twist for analogous bundles over projective spaces.
Homological mirror symmetry predicts that there is a relation between autoequivalence groups of derived categories of coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties, and the symplectic mapping class groups of symplectic manifolds. In this paper, as an analogue of Dehn twists for mapping class groups of closed oriented real surfaces, we study spherical twists for derived categories of algebraic varieties. We introduce the intersection number and relate it to group-theoretic properties of spherical twists. As an application, we compute the center of autoequivalence groups of derived categories of K3 s…
Given a categorical dynamical system, i.e. a triangulated category together with an endofunctor, one can try to understand the complexity of the system by computing the entropy of the endofunctor. Computing the entropy of the composition of two endofunctors is hard, and in general the result doesn't have to be related to the entropy of the single pieces. In this paper we compute the entropy of the composition of two spherical twists around spherical objects, showing that it depends on the dimension of the graded vector space of morphisms between them. As a consequence of these computations we …
We describe all groups that can be generated by two twists along spherical sequences in an enhanced triangulated category. It will be shown that with one exception such a group is isomorphic to an abelian group generated by not more than two elements, the free group on two generators or the braid group of one of the types $A_2$, $B_2$ and $G_2$ factorized by a central subgroup. The last mentioned subgroup can be nontrivial only if some specific linear relation between length and sphericity holds. The mentioned exception can occur when one has two spherical sequences of length $3$ and sphericit…
We study the curve counting invariants of Calabi--Yau 3-folds via the Weyl reflection along a ruled divisor. We obtain a new rationality result and functional equation for the generating functions of Pandharipande--Thomas invariants. When the divisor arises as resolution of a curve of $A_1$-singularities, our results match the rationality of the associated Calabi--Yau orbifold. The symmetry on generating functions descends from the action of an infinite dihedral group of derived auto-equivalences, which is generated by the derived dual and a spherical twist. Our techniques involve wall-crossin…
For two DG-categories A and B we define the notion of a spherical Morita quasi-functor A -> B. We construct its associated autoequivalences: the twist T of D(B) and the co-twist F of D(A). We give powerful sufficiency criteria for a quasi-functor to be spherical and for the twists associated to a collection of spherical quasi-functors to braid. Using the framework of DG-enhanced triangulated categories, we translate all of the above to Fourier-Mukai transforms between the derived categories of algebraic varieties. This is a broad generalisation of the results on spherical objects in [ST01] and…
We study the relationship between the categorical entropy of the twist and cotwist functors along a spherical functor. In particular, we prove the categorical entropy of the twist functor coincides with that of the cotwist functor if the essential image of the right adjoint functor of the spherical functor contains a split-generator. We also see our results generalize the computations of the categorical entropy of spherical twists and $\mathbb{P}$-twists by Ouchi and Fan. As an application, we apply our results to the Gromov--Yomdin type conjecture by Kikuta--Takahashi.
We study autoequivalences of the derived category of coherent sheaves of a variety arising from a variation of GIT quotient. We show that these automorphisms are spherical twists, and describe how they result from mutations of semiorthogonal decompositions. Beyond the GIT setting, we show that all spherical twist autoequivalences of a dg-category can be obtained from mutation in this manner. Motivated by a prediction from mirror symmetry, we refine the recent notion of "grade restriction rules" in equivariant derived categories. We produce additional derived autoequivalences of a GIT quotient …
We classify spherical modules and full exceptional sequences of modules over the Auslander algebra of $k[x]/(x^t)$. We categorify the left and right symmetric group actions on these exceptional sequences to two braid group actions: of spherical twists along simple modules, and of right mutations. In particular, every such exceptional sequence is obtained by spherical twists from a standard sequence, and likewise for right mutations.
We introduce a new class of autoequivalences that act on the derived categories of certain vector bundles over Grassmannians. These autoequivalences arise from Grassmannian flops: they generalize Seidel-Thomas spherical twists, which can be seen as arising from standard flops. We first give a simple algebraic construction, which is well-suited to explicit computations. We then give a geometric construction using spherical functors which we prove is equivalent.
In arXiv:2007.14415 we proved that the "flop-flop" autoequivalence can be realized as the spherical twist around a spherical functor whose source category arises naturally from the geometry. In this companion paper we study in detail some examples so to explicitly describe what the source category looks like. In some cases we are able to prove that the source category respects the known decomposition of the flop-flop autoequivalence, and therefore we tie up our geometric description with formal results which appear in the literature about gluing and splitting of spherical twists around spheric…
We find two natural spherical functors associated to the Kummer surface and analyse how their induced twists fit with Bridgeland's conjecture on the derived autoequivalence group of a complex algebraic K3 surface.
We study sets of commuting reflection functors in the derived category of sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties. We show that such a collection is determined by a set of mutually orthogonal spherical objects. We also show that when the spherical objects are locally-free sheaves then the kernel of the composite transform parametrizes properly torsion-free with zero-dimensional singularity sets and conversely that such a kernel gives rise to a collection of mutually orthogonal spherical vector bundles. We do this using a more detailed analysis of the reason why spherical twists give equivalences.

We describe new autoequivalences of derived categories of coherent sheaves arising from what we call $\mathbb P^n$-objects of the category. Standard examples arise from holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Under mirror symmetry these autoequivalences should be mirror to Seidel's Dehn twists about lagrangian $\mathbb P^n$ submanifolds. We give various connections to spherical objects and spherical twists, and include a simple description of Atiyah and Kodaira-Spencer classes in an appendix.
We study an admissible subcategory of the Bondal quiver which conjecturally does not admit any Bridgeland stability conditions. Specifically, we prove that its Serre functor coincides with the spherical twist associated with a $3$-spherical object. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the spherical objects, deduce the non-existence of Serre-invariant stability conditions, and construct a natural spherical functor from its structure as a categorical resolution of the nodal cubic curve.
We consider certain universal functors on symmetric quotient stacks of Abelian varieties. In dimension two, we discover a family of $\mathbb{P}$-functors which induce new derived autoequivalences of Hilbert schemes of points on Abelian surfaces; a set of braid relations on a holomorphic symplectic sixfold; and a pair of spherical functors on the Hilbert square of an Abelian surface, whose twists are related to the well-known Horja twist. In dimension one, our universal functors are fully faithful, giving rise to a semiorthogonal decomposition for the symmetric quotient stack of an elliptic cur…
We describe in terms of spherical twists the Serre functors of many interesting semiorthogonal components, called residual categories, of the derived categories of projective varieties. In particular, we show the residual categories of Fano complete intersections are fractional Calabi--Yau up to a power of an explicit spherical twist. As applications, we compute the Serre dimensions of residual categories of Fano complete intersections, thereby proving a corrected version of a conjecture of Katzarkov and Kontsevich, and deduce the nonexistence of Serre invariant stability conditions when the d…
Given a split $\mathbb{P}$-functor $F:\mathcal{D}^b(X) \to \mathcal{D}^b(Y)$ between smooth projective varieties, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the Hochschild cohomology of $X$, for it to become spherical on the total space of a deformation of $Y$, and explain how the spherical twist becomes the $\mathbb{P}$-twist on the special fibre. These results generalise the object case, that is when $X$ is a point, which was studied previously by Huybrechts and Thomas, and we show how they apply to the $\mathbb{P}$-functor associated to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 …
We show that the autoequivalence group of the derived category of any smooth projective toric surface is generated by the standard equivalences and spherical twists obtained from -2-curves. In many cases we give all relations between these generators. We also prove a close link between spherical objects and certain pairs of exceptional objects.
Flops are birational transformations which, conjecturally, induce derived equivalences. In many cases an equivalence can be produced as pull-push via a resolution of the birational transformation; when this happens, we have a non-trivial autoequivalence of either sides of the flop known as the \emph{flop-flop autoequivalence}. We prove that such autoequivalence can be realised as the inverse of a spherical twist around a conservative, spherical functor in a natural way. More precisely, we prove that a natural, conservative spherical functor exists in a more general framework and that the flop-…
