We study observable signals from dark matter that self-annihilates via the Sommerfeld effect in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). Since the effect of the Sommerfeld enhancement depends on the velocity of dark matter, it is crucial to determine the profile of dSphs to compute the J-factor, i.e., the line-of-sight integral of density squared. In our study we use the prior distributions of the parameters for satellite density profiles in order to determine the J-factor, making most out of the recent developments in the N-body simulations and semi-analytical modeling for the structure formation. As concrete models, we analyze fermionic dark matter that annihilates via a light scalar and Wino dark matter in supersymmetric models. We find that, with the more realistic prior distributions that we adopt in this study, the J-factor of the most promising dSphs is decreased by a factor of a few, compared with earlier estimates based on non-informative priors. Nevertheless, the Cherenkov Telescope Array should be able to detect the thermal Wino dark matter by pointing it toward best classical or ultrafaint dSphs for 500 hours.
For models in which dark matter annihilation is Sommerfeld-enhanced, the annihilation cross section increases at low relative velocities. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have low characteristic dark matter particle velocities and are thus ideal candidates to study such models. In this paper we model the dark matter phase space of dSphs as isotropic and spherically-symmetric, and determine the $J$-factors for several of the most important targets for indirect dark matter searches. For Navarro-Frenk-White density profiles, we quantify the scatter in the $J$-factor arising from the astrophysica…
In a large class of models we show that the light scalar field responsible for the Sommerfeld enhancement in the annihilation of dark matter leads to observable direct detection rates, due to its mixing with the standard model Higgs. As a result the large annihilation cross-section of dark matter at present epoch, required to explain the observed cosmic ray anomalies, can be strongly constrained by direct searches. In particular Sommerfeld boost factors of order of a few hundred are already out of the CDMS-II upper bound at 90% confidence level for reasonable values of the model parameters.
We study the impact of the dark matter velocity distribution modelling on signals from velocity-dependent dark matter annihilation in Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Using the high resolution APOSTLE simulations, we identify analogues corresponding to Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and from these directly determine the dark matter pair-wise relative velocity distribution, and compare to best-fitting Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution models. For three velocity-dependent annihilation models, p-wave, d-wave, and the Sommerfeld model, we quantify the errors introduced when using the Maxwel…
We calculate the effective $J$-factors, which determine the strength of indirect detection signals from dark matter annihilation, for 25 dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). We consider several well-motivated assumptions for the relative velocity dependence of the dark matter annihilation cross section: $σ_A v$: $s$-wave (velocity independent), $p$-wave ($σ_A v \propto v^2$), $d$-wave ($σ_A v \propto v^4$), and Sommerfeld-enhancement in the Coulomb limit ($σ_A v \propto 1/v$). As a result we provide the largest and most updated sample of J-factors for velocity-dependent annihilation models. For …
We study the prospects for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) to find new dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Milky Way. Adopting models of Milky-Way halo substructure and phenomenological prescriptions connecting subhalos and satellite galaxies, we obtain surface brightness distributions of $V$-band magnitude that lead us to predict that LSST will discover tens to hundreds of dwarf spheroidal galaxies above its sensitivity. The soon-to-be-discovered dwarfs will be interesting targets for indirect searches of dark matter annihilation yields. We forecast the distribution function of gamma-…
Dwarf spheroidals are low-luminosity satellite galaxies of the Milky Way highly dominated by dark matter (DM). Therefore, they are prime targets to search for signals from dark matter annihilation using gamma-ray observations. While the typical assumption is that the dark matter density profile of these satellite galaxies can be described by a spherical symmetric Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, recent observational data of stellar kinematics suggest that the DM halos around these galaxies are better described by axisymmetric profiles. Motivated by such evidence, we analyse about seven years…
Line-of-sight integrals of the squared density, commonly called the J-factor, are essential for inferring dark matter annihilation signals. The J-factors of dark matter-dominated dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) have typically been derived using Bayesian techniques, which for small data samples implies that a choice of priors constitutes a non-negligible systematic uncertainty. Here we report the development of a new fully frequentist approach to construct the profile likelihood of the J-factor. Using stellar kinematic data from several classical and ultra-faint dSphs, we derive the…
Indirect dark matter searches targeting dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have matured rapidly during the past decade. This has been because of the substantial increase in kinematic data sets from the dSphs, the new dSphs that have been discovered, and the operation of the Fermi-LAT and many ground-based gamma-ray experiments. Here we review the analysis methods that have been used to determine the dSph dark matter distributions, in particular the "J-factors," comparing and contrasting them, and detailing the underlying systematics that still affect the analysis. We discuss prospects for impro…
We present a study of the Very Degenerate Higgsino Dark Matter (DM), whose mass splitting between the lightest neutral and charged components is ${\cal O}$(1) MeV, much smaller than radiative splitting of 355 MeV. The scenario is realized in the minimal supersymmetric standard model by small gaugino mixing. In contrast to the pure Higgsino DM with the radiative splitting only, various observable signatures with distinct features are induced. First of all, the very small mass splitting makes (a) sizable Sommerfeld enhancement and Ramsauer-Townsend (RT) suppression relevant to ~1 TeV Higgsino DM…
We investigate the impact of recent limits from LHC searches for supersymmetry and from direct and indirect searches for dark matter on global Bayesian inferences of the parameter space of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM). In particular we apply recent exclusion limits from the CMS α_T analysis of 1.1/fb of integrated luminosity, the current direct detection dark matter limit from XENON100, as well as recent experimental constraints on γ-ray fluxes from dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies of the Milky Way from the FermiLAT telescope, in addition to updating values …
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies have long been discussed as optimal targets for indirect dark matter searches. However, the majority of such studies have been conducted with gamma-ray instruments. In this review, we discuss the very recent progress that has been made in radio-based indirect dark matter searches. We look at existing work on this topic and discuss the future prospects that motivate continued work in this newly developing field that promises to become, in the light of the up-coming Square Kilometre Array, a prominent component of the hunt for dark matter.
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are excellent targets in gamma-ray searches for dark matter. We consider dark matter searches in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The aim of this work is to reveal a quantitative and precise dependence of the accessible dark matter annihilation cross-sections on the dark matter density profiles of dSphs and on the distance to them. In most data analyses, researchers have assumed point-like signals from dSphs because it is difficult to resolve the expected emission profiles with current gamma-ray observatories. In future howev…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies compose one of the most dark matter dominated classes of objects, making them a set of targets to search for signals of dark matter annihilation. Recent developments in gamma-ray astronomy, most importantly the launch of the Fermi-LAT instrument, have brought those targets into attention. Yet, no clear excess of gamma-rays has been confirmed from these targets, resulting in some of the tightest limits on dark matter annihilation from indirect searches. In extracting limits from dwarf spheroidal galaxies, it is of great importance, to properly take into account all rel…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect dark matter (DM) searches in $γ$-rays. The $γ$-ray flux from DM annihilation in a dwarf spheroidal galaxy is proportional to the $J$-factor of the source. The $J$-factor of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy is the line-of-sight integral of the DM mass density squared times $\langle σ_{\rm ann} v_{\rm rel} \rangle/(σ_{\rm ann} v_{\rm rel})_0$, where $σ_{\rm ann} v_{\rm rel}$ is the DM annihilation cross-section times relative velocity $v_{\rm rel}=|{\bf v}_{\rm rel}|$, angle brackets denote average over ${\bf v}_{\rm rel}$, and…
We explore the possibility that bound states involving dark matter particles could be detected by resonance searches at the LHC, and the generic implications of such scenarios for indirect and direct detection. We demonstrate that resonance searches are complementary to mono-jet searches and can probe dark matter masses above 1 TeV with current LHC data. We argue that this parameter regime, where the bound-state resonance channel is the most sensitive probe of the dark sector, arises most naturally in the context of non-trivial dark sectors with large couplings, nearly-degenerate dark-matter-l…
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory is a wide field-of-view observatory sensitive to 0.5 TeV - 100 TeV gamma-rays and cosmic-rays in the State of Puebla, Mexico at an altitude of 4100m. The HAWC observatory performed an indirect search for dark matter via GeV-TeV photons resulting from dark matter annihilation and decay considering various sources, including dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), the M31 galaxy and the Virgo cluster, as well as a combined limit using the dSphs. HAWC has not seen statistically significant excess from these sources. We searched for dark ma…
Indirect detection strategies of particle Dark Matter (DM) in Dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) typically entail searching for annihilation signals above the astrophysical background. To robustly compare model predictions with the observed fluxes of product particles, most analyses of astrophysical data -- which are generally frequentist -- rely on estimating the abundance of DM by calculating the so-called $\textit{J-factor}$. This quantity is usually inferred from the kinematic properties of the stellar population of a dSph using Jeans equation, commonly by means of Bayesian techni…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are dark matter dominated systems, and as such, ideal for indirect dark matter searches. If dark matter decays into high-energy photons in the dwarf galaxies, they will be a good target for current and future generations of X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes. By adopting the latest estimates of density profiles of dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way, we revise the estimates dark matter decay rates in dwarf galaxies; our results are more robust, but weaker than previous estimates. Applying these results, we study the detectability of dark matter decays with X-ray and very-high…
The core-cusp problem is one of the controversial issues in the standard paradigm of $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) theory. However, under the assumption of conventional spherical symmetry, the strong degeneracy among model parameters makes it unclear whether dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies indeed have cored dark matter density profiles at the centers. In this work, we revisit this problem using non-spherical mass models, which have the advantage of being able to alleviate the degeneracy. Applying our mass models to the currently available kinematic data of the eight classical dSphs, we find t…
We study pure weak eigenstate Dirac fermionic dark matters (DM). We consider WIMP with renormalizable interaction. According to results of direct searches and the nature of DM (electrical neutral and being a pure weak eigenstate), the quantum number of DM is determined to be $I_3=Y=0$. There are only two possible cases: either DM has non-vanishing weak isospin ($I\neq 0$) or it is an isosinglet (I=0). In the first case, the Sommerfeld enhancement is sizable for large $I$, producing large $χ^0\bar{χ^0}\to VV$ rates. In particular, we obtain large $χ\barχ\to W^+ W^-$ cross section, which is comp…
We report the real-time discovery of a fast radio burst (FRB 131104) with the Parkes radio telescope in a targeted observation of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The dispersion measure of the burst is 779 cm$^{-3}$ pc, exceeding predictions for the maximum line-of-sight Galactic contribution by a factor of 11. The temporal structure of the burst is characterized by an exponential scattering tail with a timescale of 2.0$^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$ ms at 1582 MHz that scales as frequency to the power $-$4.4$^{+1.6}_{-1.8}$ (all uncertainties represent 95% confidence intervals). We bound the intrinsic pu…
We investigate constraints on the properties of light dark matter which can be obtained from analysis of invisible quarkonium decays at high intensity electron-positron colliders in the framework of a low energy effective field theory. A matrix element analysis of all contact operators pertinent for these meson decays allows for a model-independent calculation of associated dark matter-nucleon scattering and dark matter annihilation cross sections. Assuming dark matter couples universally to all quark flavors, we then obtain bounds on nucleon scattering which complement direct dark matter dete…
Irrespective of the dark matter (DM) candidate, several potentially observable signatures derive from the velocity distribution of DM in halos, in particular in the Milky Way (MW) halo. Examples include direct searches for weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), $p$-wave suppressed or Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation signals, microlensing events of primordial black holes (PBHs), {\em etc}. Most current predictions are based on the Maxwellian approximation which is not only theoretically inconsistent in bounded systems, but also not supported by cosmological simulations. A more consistent…
We show that the right-handed (RH) sneutrino in the NMSSM can account for the observed excess in the Fermi-LAT spectrum of gamma rays from the Galactic Centre, while fulfilling all the current experimental constraints from the LHC as well as from direct and indirect dark matter searches. We have explored the parameter space of this scenario, computed the gamma ray spectrum for each phenomenologically viable solution and then performed a chi^2 fit to the excess. Unlike previous studies based on model independent interpretations, we have taken into account the full annihilation spectrum, without…
In the cold dark matter scenario, galactic dark matter halos are populated with a large number of smaller subhalos. Previous work has shown that dark matter annihilations in subhalos can generate a distinctive, non-Poisson signal in the gamma-ray photon counts probability distribution function (PDF). Here we show that the gamma-ray PDF also carries information about the velocity dependence of the dark matter annihilation cross section. After calculating the PDF assuming $s$-wave and Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation, we perform a mock data analysis to illustrate how current and future observati…
Can dark matter be stabilized by charge conservation, just as the electron is in the standard model? We examine the possibility that dark matter is hidden, that is, neutral under all standard model gauge interactions, but charged under an exact U(1) gauge symmetry of the hidden sector. Such candidates are predicted in WIMPless models, supersymmetric models in which hidden dark matter has the desired thermal relic density for a wide range of masses. Hidden charged dark matter has many novel properties not shared by neutral dark matter: (1) bound state formation and Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilat…

We estimate the conventional astrophysical emission from dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) of the Milky Way, focusing on millisecond pulsars (MSPs), and evaluate the potential for confusion with dark matter (DM) annihilation signatures at GeV energies. In low-density stellar environments, such as dSphs, the abundance of MSPs is expected to be proportional to stellar mass. Accordingly, we construct the $γ$-ray luminosity function of MSPs in the Milky Way disk, where $>90$ individual MSPs have been detected with the $\textit{Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope (LAT), and scale this luminosity…
We analyse the sensitivity of IceCube-DeepCore to annihilation of neutralino dark matter in the solar core, generated within a 25 parameter version of the minimally supersymmetric standard model (MSSM-25). We explore the 25-dimensional parameter space using scanning methods based on importance sampling and using DarkSUSY 5.0.6 to calculate observables. Our scans produced a database of 6.02 million parameter space points with neutralino dark matter consistent with the relic density implied by WMAP 7-year data, as well as with accelerator searches. We performed a model exclusion analysis upon th…
Due to a large mass-to-light ratio and low astrophysical backgrounds, dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are considered to be one of the most promising targets for dark matter searches via gamma rays. The Fermi LAT Collaboration has recently reported robust constraints on the dark matter annihilation cross section from a combined analysis of 10 dSphs. These constraints have been applied to experimentally valid, super-symmetric particle models derived from a phenomenological scan of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (the pMSSM). Additionally, the LAT Collaboration has searched for spatia…
Dark matter (DM) annihilations have been widely studied as a possible explanation of excess gamma rays from the galactic center seen by Fermi/LAT. However most such models are in conflict with constraints from dwarf spheroidals. Motivated by this tension, we show that p-wave annihilating dark matter can easily accommodate both sets of observations due to the lower DM velocity dispersion in dwarf galaxies. Explaining the DM relic abundance is then challenging. We outline a scenario in which the usual thermal abundance is obtained through s-wave annihilations of a metastable particle, that event…
We present a model of weak scale Dark Matter (DM) where the thermal DM density is set by the lepton asymmetry due to the presence of higher dimension lepton violating operators. In these models there is generically a separation between the annihilation cross-section responsible for the relic abundance (through lepton violating operators) and the annihilation cross-section that is relevant for the indirect detection of DM (through lepton preserving operators). Due to this separation, there is a perceived boost in the annihilation cross-section in the galaxy today relative to that derived for ca…
We investigate constraints on the interactions of light dark matter with Standard Model quarks in a framework with effective contact operators mediating the decay of heavy flavor bound state quarkonium to dark matter and a photon. When considered in combination with decays to purely invisible final states, constraints from heavy quarkonium decays at high intensity electron-positron colliders can complement missing energy searches at high energy colliders and provide sensitivity to dark matter masses difficult to probe at direct and indirect detection experiments. We calculate the approximate l…
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory is a wide field-of-view observatory sensitive to 100 GeV - 100 TeV gamma rays and cosmic rays. The HAWC observatory is also sensitive to diverse indirect searches for dark matter annihilation, including annihilation from extended dark matter sources, the diffuse gamma-ray emission from dark matter annihilation, and gamma-ray emission from non-luminous dark matter subhalos. Among the most promising classes of objects for the indirect detection of dark matter are dwarf spheroidal galaxies. These objects are expected to have few astro…
We present deep radio observations of four nearby dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies, designed to detect extended synchrotron emission resulting from weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter annihilations in their halos. Models by Colafrancesco et al. (CPU07) predict the existence of angularly large, smoothly distributed radio halos in such systems, that stem from electron and positron annihilation products spiraling in a turbulent magnetic field. We map a total of 40.5 deg^2 around the Draco, Ursa Major II, Coma Berenices, and Willman 1 dSphs with the GBT at 1.4 GHz to detect this…

We perform a multichannel analysis of the indirect signals for the Wino Dark Matter, including one-loop electroweak and Sommerfeld enhancement corrections. We derive limits from cosmic ray antiprotons and positrons, from continuum galactic and extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray spectra, from the absence of gamma-ray line features at the galactic center above 500 GeV in energy, from gamma-rays toward nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies and galaxy clusters, and from CMB power-spectra. Additionally, we show the future prospects for neutrino observations toward the inner Galaxy and from antideuteron sea…
We consider gamma-ray signals of dark matter annihilation in extragalactic halos in the case where dark matter annihilates from a $p$-wave or $d$-wave state. In these scenarios, signals from extragalactic halos are enhanced relative to other targets, such as the Galactic Center or dwarf spheroidal galaxies, because the typical relative speed of the dark matter is larger in extragalactic halos. We perform a mock data analysis of gamma rays produced by dark matter annihilation in halos detected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We include a model for uncorrelated galactic and extragalactic gamma …
We present a detailed study of the effect of internal bremsstrahlung photons in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard models and their impact on gamma-ray dark matter annihilation searches. We find that although this effect has to be included for the correct evaluation of fluxes of high energy photons from neutralino annihilation, its contribution is relevant only in models and at energies where the lines contribution is dominant over the secondary photons. Therefore, we find that the most optimistic supersymmetric scenarios for dark matter detection do not change significantly wh…
If dark matter particles pair annihilate into stable Standard Model particles, a population of energetic, non-thermal electrons and positrons is necessarily produced. The secondary radiation resulting from the energy losses of this non-standard population (including synchrotron and inverse Compton up-scattering of background radiation photons) in turn produces a peculiar multi-wavelength spectrum, extending from radio to gamma-ray frequencies. We give here an overview of multi-wavelength searches for dark matter, including the expected injection spectrum and production rate of electrons and po…
Reducing theoretical uncertainties in Galactic dark matter (DM) searches is an important challenge as several experiments are now delving into the parameter space relevant to popular (particle or not) candidates. Since many DM signal predictions rely on the knowledge of the DM velocity distribution---direct searches, capture by stars, p-wave-suppressed or Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation rate, microlensing of primordial black holes, etc.---it is necessary to assess the accuracy of our current theoretical handle. Beyond Maxwellian approximations or ad-hoc extrapolations of fits on cosmological …
Weak-scale supersymmetry is one of the most favoured theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics that elegantly solves various theoretical and observational problems in both particle physics and cosmology. In this thesis, I describe the theoretical foundations of supersymmetry, issues that it can address and concrete supersymmetric models that are widely used in phenomenological studies. I discuss how the predictions of supersymmetric models may be compared with observational data from both colliders and cosmology. I show why constraints on supersymmetric parameters by direct and in…
Indirect dark matter searches with ground-based gamma-ray observatories provide an alternative for identifying the particle nature of dark matter that is complementary to that of direct search or accelerator production experiments. We present the results of observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Draco, Ursa Minor, Bootes 1, and Willman 1 conducted by VERITAS. These galaxies are nearby dark matter dominated objects located at a typical distance of several tens of kiloparsecs for which there are good measurements of the dark matter density profile from stellar velocity measurements. Since…
We combine and extend the analyses of effective scalar, vector, Majorana and Dirac fermion Higgs portal models of dark matter (DM), in which DM couples to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson via an operator of the form $\mathcal{O}_{\textrm{DM}}\, H^\dagger H$. For the fermion models, we take an admixture of scalar $\overlineψ ψ$ and pseudoscalar $\overlineψ iγ_5 ψ$ interaction terms. For each model, we apply constraints on the parameter space based on the Planck measured DM relic density and the LHC limits on the Higgs invisible branching ratio. For the first time, we perform a consistent stu…
We perform a global fit within the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter (DM) model emerging from an additional complex scalar singlet with a softly broken global U(1) symmetry. Leading to a momentum-suppressed DM-nucleon cross section at tree level, the model provides a natural explanation for the null results from direct detection experiments. Our global fit combines constraints from perturbative unitarity, DM relic abundance, Higgs invisible decay, electroweak precision observables and latest Higgs searches at colliders. The results are presented in both frequentist and Bayesian statistical fr…
The distribution of dark matter (DM) subhalos in our Galaxy remains disputed, leading to varying $γ$-ray and $ν$ flux predictions from their annihilation or decay. In this work, we study how, in the inner Galaxy, subhalo tidal disruption from the Galactic baryonic potential impacts these signals. Based on state-of-the art modeling of this effect from numerical simulations and semi-analytical results, updated subhalo spatial distributions are derived and included in the CLUMPY code. The latter is used to produce a thousand realizations of the $γ$-ray and $ν$ sky. Compared to predictions based o…
We revisit the calculation of relic density of dark matter particles co-annihilating with a top or bottom partner, by properly including the QCD bound-states (onia) effects of the colored partners, as well as the relevant electroweak processes which become important in the low mass region. We carefully set up the complete framework that incorporates the relevant contributions and investigate their effects on the cosmologically preferred mass spectrum, which turn out to be comparable in size to those coming from the Sommerfeld enhancement. We apply the calculation to three scenarios: bino-stop …
We investigate dwarf irregular(dIrr) galaxies as a new category of targets for indirect Dark Matter(DM) searches with gamma-rays. In the framework of point-like analysis, dwarf spheroidal(dSph) galaxies are usually considered as one of the best category of targets for indirect DM searches. Nonetheless, as a result of their uncertain kinematics, the DM content and astrophysical J-factors of dSphs are usually affected by significant errors. In this paper, we study a sample of 36 dIrrs as prospective targets of interest. In the framework of the universal rotation curve, the kinematics of dIrr gal…
Context. The sterile neutrino is an excellent dark matter candidate, which can be searched for in a wide range of astrophysical sites. It has previously been shown that the optimal search strategy is to consider dwarf galaxies belonging to the Milky Way. Aims. We search for line emission from decaying dark matter. Methods. We analyse publicly available Chandra X-ray observations of the dwarf galaxy Draco. Results. The Draco and blank sky (background) spectra are nearly identical in shape, which allows us to conclude: i) Dwarf spheroidals are ideal for studying dark matter X-ray emission since …
Ultracompact minihalos have recently been proposed as a new class of dark matter structure. These minihalos would be produced by phase transitions in the early Universe or features in the inflaton potential, and constitute non-baryonic massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) today. We examine the prospect of detecting ultracompact minihalos in gamma-rays if dark matter consists of self-annihilating particles. We compute present-day fluxes from minihalos produced in the electron-positron annihilation epoch, and the QCD and electroweak phase transitions in the early Universe. Even at a distance of…
We report on the observations of 14 dwarf spheroidal galaxies with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope taken during the first 11 months of survey mode operations. The Fermi telescope provides a new opportunity to test particle dark matter models through the expected gamma-ray emission produced by pair annihilation of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the largest galactic substructures predicted by the cold dark matter scenario, are attractive targets for such indirect searches for dark matter because they are nearby and among the most extreme …
For many dark matter models, the annihilation cross section to two-body final states is difficult to probe with current experiments because the dominant annihilation channel is velocity or helicity suppressed. The inclusion of gauge boson radiation for three-body final states can lift the helicity suppression, allowing a velocity-independent cross section to dominate the annihilation process, and providing an avenue to constrain these models. Here we examine experimental constraints on dark matter that annihilates to two leptons plus a bremsstrahlung boson, $\bar{\ell}+\ell+γ/W/Z$. We consider…
We searched for an X-ray line at energies around 3.5 keV in deep, ~1.6 Msec XMM-Newton observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Draco. No line was found in either the MOS or the PN detectors. The data in this energy range are completely consistent with a single, unfolded power law modeling the particle background, which dominates at these energies, plus instrumental lines; the addition of a ~3.5 keV line feature gives no improvement to the fit. The corresponding upper limit on the line flux rules out a dark matter decay origin for the 3.5 keV line found in observations of clusters of galaxi…
