In the past decade, advances in electronics technology have made larger imaging sensors available to the experimental fluid mechanics community. These advancements have enabled the measurement of 2-component 2-dimensional (2C-2D) velocity fields using particle image velocimetry (PIV) with much higher spatial resolution than previously possible. However, due to the large size of the sensor, the lens distortion needs to be taken into account as it will now have a more significant effect on the measurement quality that must be corrected to ensure accurate high-fidelity 2C-2D velocity field measurements. In this paper, two dewarping models, a second-order rational function (R2) and a bicubic polynomial (P3) are investigated with regards to 2C-2D PIV measurements of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) using a large imaging sensor. Two approaches are considered and compared: (i) dewarping the images prior to the PIV cross-correlation analysis and (ii) undertaking the PIV cross-correlation analysis using the original recorded distorted images then followed by using the mapping functions derived for image dewarping to provide the correct spatial location of the velocity measurement point. The results demonstrate that the use of P3 dewarping model to correct lens distortion yields better results than the R2 dewarping model. Furthermore, both approaches for the P3 dewarping model yield results which are statistically indistinguishable.
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has become increasingly popular to study structures in turbulent flows. PIV allows direct extraction and investigation of spatial structures in the given flow field. Increasing temporal resolution of PIV systems allows a more accurate capture of the flow evolution. Despite the very good spatial resolution of PIV, current systems can only match the multiple $kHz$ sampling rates of hot-wire or Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) measurements for a very short period in temporal analyses of flow. In this study, an advection-based approach is presented which uses Taylor'…
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) systems are often limited in their ability to fully resolve the spatiotemporal fluctuations inherent in turbulent flows due to hardware constraints. In this study, we develop models based on Rapid Distortion Theory (RDT) and Taylor's Hypothesis (TH) to reconstruct the time evolution of a turbulent flow field in the intermediate period between consecutive PIV snapshots obtained using a non-time resolved system. The linear governing equations are evolved forwards and backwards in time using the PIV snapshots as initial conditions. The flow field in the intervenin…
We study experimentally turbulent thermal diffusion of small particles in inhomogeneous and anisotropic stably stratified turbulence produced by one oscillating grid in the air flow. The velocity fields have been measured using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). We have determined various turbulence characteristics: the mean and turbulent velocities, two-point correlation functions of the velocity field and an integral scale of turbulence from the measured velocity fields. The temperature field have been measured with a temperature probe equipped with 12 E thermocouples. Spatial distributions…
In this paper, we investigate the relations between global and local energy transfers in a turbulent von Kármán flow. The goal is to understand how and where energy is dissipated in such a flow and to reconstruct the energy cycle in an experimental device where local as well as global quantities can be measured. We use PIV measurements and we model the Reynolds stress tensor to take subgrid scales into account. This procedure involves a free parameter that is calibrated using angular momentum balance. We then estimate the local and global mean injected and dissipated power for several types of…
In this study we focus on the control of the dynamics of 3D turbulent wake downstream a square-back Ahmed body ($Re_H=3.9\times10^5$). The peculiar dynamics of such a wake are first characterized through the trajectories of the pressure barycenter over the rear part of the model as well as the recirculation barycenter in the wake. In particular it is shown that these dynamics allow the definition of three different states: the two so-called reflectional symmetry-breaking (RSB) modes and the transient symmetric (TS) mode. It was shown recently that the time-fluctuations of the pressure barycent…
We present a novel characterization of mixing events associated with the propagation and overturning of internal waves, studied thanks to the simultaneous use of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) techniques. This combination of techniques had been developed earlier to provide an access to simultaneous velocity and density fields in two-layer stratified flows with interfacial gravity waves. Here, for the first time, we show how it is possible to implement it quantitatively in the case of a continuously stratified fluid where internal waves propagate i…
High-spatial-resolution (HSR) two-component, two-dimensional particle-image-velocimetry (2C-2D PIV) measurements of a zero-pressure-gradient (ZPG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) and an adverse-pressure-gradient (APG)-TBL were taken in the LMFL High Reynolds number Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel. The ZPG-TBL has a momentum-thickness based Reynolds number $Re_{δ_2} = δ_2 U_e/ν= 7,750$ while the APG-TBL has a $Re_{δ_2} = 16,240$ and a Clauser's pressure gradient parameter $β= δ_1 P_x/τ_w = 2.27$ After analysing the single-exposed PIV image data using a multigrid/multipass digital PIV (Soria, 1996) wi…

This paper makes a correction to the collision rates of small droplets in turbulent fluid derived by Saffman and Turner(1956). Not only the distortion but also the rotation of the fluid is taken into account between two close droplets. A rotation reference is fixed on one drop, and the fluxes of the other drops moving towards the fixed one are carried out based on this new reference. The behaviors of turbulent flow are analyzed within the smallest eddies under the rotation reference, and a correction is made to the collision rates by multiplying a factor sqrt(2).
Recent numerical simulations indicate that streamwise-preferential anisotropic porous materials have the potential to reduce skin friction in turbulent flows through a similar mechanism to riblets. This paper reports particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements made in turbulent boundary layers at $Re_τ\approx 360$ over 3D-printed porous substrates exhibiting such streamwise-preferential permeability. The porous material has normalized streamwise permeability $\sqrt{K_{xx}^+}\approx 3.0$ and wall-normal and spanwise permeabilities $\sqrt{K_{yy}^+} = \sqrt{K_{zz}^+} \approx 1.1$. This material…
High-amplitude events of the out-of-plane vorticity component $ω_z$ are analyzed by stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) in the bulk region of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in air. The Rayleigh numbers ${\rm Ra}$ vary from $1.7 \times 10^4$ to $5.1 \times 10^5$. The experimental investigation is connected with a comprehensive statistical analysis of long-term time series of $ω_z$ and individual velocity derivatives $\partial u_i/\partial x_j$. A statistical convergence for derivative moments up to an order of 6 is demonstrated. Our results are found to agree well with existing …
Using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in a new experimental plane Couette flow, we investigate the dynamics of turbulent patches invading formerly laminar flows. We evidence experimentally for the first time in this geometry the existence of large scale flows. These flows appear as soon as laminar and turbulent domains coexist. Spectral analysis is used to study the dynamical evolution of these large scales as well as that of the small scales associated with turbulence. We show that large-scale flows grow before turbulent spots develop and we point out the crucial role they play in the growth…
Fuel sprays produce high-velocity, jet-like flows that impart turbulence onto the ambient flow field. The spray-induced turbulence augments fuel-air mixing, which has a primary role in controlling pollutant formation and cyclic variability in engines. This paper presents tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV) measurements to analyse the 3D spray-induced turbulence during the intake stroke of a direct-injection engine. The spray produces a strong spray-induced jet in the far field, which travels through the cylinder and imparts turbulence onto the surrounding flow. Planar high-speed PIV …
The presence of stratified layer in atmosphere and ocean leads to buoyant vertical motions, commonly referred to as plumes. It is important to study the mixing dynamics of a plume at a local scale in order to model their evolution and growth. Such a characterization requires measuring the velocity and density of the mixing fluids simultaneously. Here, we present the results of a buoyant plume propagating in a linearly stratified medium with a density difference of 0.5%, thus yielding a buoyancy frequency of N=0.15 s^{-1}. To understand the plume behaviour, statistics such as centerline and axi…
We present the first simultaneous mapping of two-dimensional, time-dependent velocity and pressure fields in a plane Couette flow pervaded by a transverse magnetic field. While electromagnetic forces are strongest in fluids of high electric conductivity such as liquid metals, their opacity excludes optical optical measurement methods. We circumvent this difficulty using a transparent electrolyte (Sulfuric acid), whose weaker conductivity is offset by higher magnetic fields. We describe an experimental rig based on this idea, where the Couette flow is entrained by a tape immersed in sulfuric ac…
Simultaneous measurements, such as the combination of particle image velocimetry (PIV) for velocity fields with planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) for species fields, are widely used in experimental turbulent combustion applications for the analysis of a plethora of complex physical processes. Such physical analyses are driven by the interpretation of spatial correlations between these fields by the experimenter. However, these correlations also imply some amount of intrinsic redundancy; the simultaneous fields contain overlapping information content. The goal of this work lies in the qu…
Modal linear stability analysis has proven very successful in the analysis of coherent structures of turbulent flows. Formally, it describes the evolution of a disturbance in the limit of infinite time. In this work we apply modal linear stability analysis to a turbulent swirling jet undergoing a control parameter transient. The flow undergoes a transition from a non-vortex breakdown state to a state with a strong recirculation bubble and the associated global mode. High-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are the basis for a local linear stability analysis of the temporarily e…
This paper report on the design of an experiment to establish an experimental self-similar adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flow at the verge of separation in order to characterise its statistical structure and the contribution of the Reynolds stresses to the wall shear stress via quadrant analysis decomposition in conjunction with the Renard & Deck (RD) decomposition of the mean skin friction. In this study high-spatial-resolution (HSR) two-component - two-dimensional (2C-2D) particle image velocimetry (PIV) is employed to measure the self-similar APG-TBL flow. T…
High-speed stereo PIV-measurements have been performed in a turbulent boundary layer at Re$_θ$ of 9800 in order to elucidate the coherent structures. Snapshot proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) are used to visualize the flow structure depending on the turbulent kinetic energy and frequency content. The first six POD and DMD modes show the largest and the lowest amount of energy and frequency, respectively. Lagrangian coherent structure (LCS) based on the algorithm developed using the variational theory is also applied to track the flow via attracting and…
This paper presents an experimental study on the transition from smooth to rough walls, and back to the smooth one, in turbulent closed-conduit flows. These transitions cause a shift on flow velocity profiles that changes their parameters when compared to the flow over a smooth wall. Different water flow rates were imposed in a closed conduit of rectangular cross section, where rough elements consisting of cavities of d- and k-type were positioned covering a part of the bottom wall of the test section. Reynolds numbers based on the channel half-height were moderate, varying between 7800 and 96…
A novel approach to identify internal interfacial layers, or IILs, in wall-bounded turbulent flows is proposed. Using a Fuzzy Cluster Method (FCM) on the streamwise velocity component, a unique and unambiguous grouping of the Uniform Momentum Zones is achieved, thus allowing the identification of the IILs. The approach overcomes some of the key limitations of the histogram-based IIL identification methods. The method is insensitive to the streamwise domain length, can be used on inhomogeneous grids, uses all the available flow field data, is trivially extended to three dimensions, and does not…
We experimentally perform open and closed-loop control of a separating turbulent boundary layer downstream from a sharp edge ramp. The turbulent boundary layer just above the separation point has a Reynolds number $Re_θ\approx 3\,500$ based on momentum thickness. The goal of the control is to mitigate separation and early re-attachment. The forcing employs a spanwise array of active vortex generators. The flow state is monitored with skin-friction sensors downstream of the actuators. The feedback control law is obtained using model-free genetic programming control (GPC) (Gautier et al. 2015). …
A method is developed to estimate the properties of a global hydrodynamic instability in turbulent flows from measurement data of the limit-cycle oscillations. For this purpose, the flow dynamics are separated in deterministic contributions representing the global mode and a stochastic contribution representing the intrinsic turbulent forcing. Stochastic models are developed that account for the interaction between the two and that allow determining the dynamic properties of the flow from stationary data. The deterministic contributions are modelled by an amplitude equation, which describes th…
Simultaneous Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements of stratified turbulent air/water flow in a horizontal pipe have been performed using water droplets as tracers in the gas-phase. The use of water droplets as tracers ensures that the water surface tension remains unaffected and thus allows small-scale interfacial structures, such as capillary waves to occur naturally. Experiments have been conducted in a 31 m long, 100 mm diameter PVC pipe using air and water as test fluids. For the purpose of validation of the experimental set-up and the suggested seeding technique, single-phase meas…
Buoyancy effects and nozzle geometry can have a significant impact on turbulent jet dispersion. This work was motivated by applications involving hydrogen. Using helium as an experimental proxy, buoyant horizontal jets issuing from a round orifice on the side wall of a circular tube were analysed experimentally using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques simultaneously to provide instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields of velocity and concentration. Effects of buoyancy and asymmetry on the resulting flow structure were studied over a range…
An experiment conducted in the framework of the EUHIT project and designed to characterize large scale structures in an adverse pressure gradient boundary layer flow is presented. Up to 16 sCMOS cameras were used in order to perform large scale turbulent boundary layer PIV measurements with a large field of view and appropriate spatial resolution. To access the span-wise / wall-normal signature of the structures as well, stereoscopic PIV measurements in span-wise/wall-normal planes were performed at specific stream-wise locations. To complement these large field of view measurements, long-rang…
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) have been employed to investigate the dynamics of finite-size spherical particles, slightly heavier than the carrier fluid, in a horizontal turbulent square duct flow. Interface resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have also been performed with the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) at the same experimental conditions, bulk Reynolds number $Re_{2H}$ = 5600, duct height to particle size ratio $2H/d_p$ = 14.5, particle volume fraction $Φ$ = 1% and particle to fluid density ratio $ρ_p/ρ_f$ = 1.0035. A good agreement has b…
In this paper, the TR-PIV method is used to study the internal flow field characteristics in U-shaped channels. The Reynolds number, based on the square cross section channel hydraulic diameter is 8888,13333 and 17777. Mean flow, Reynolds stress and POD are taken into consideration to investigate the flow characteristic with three different turning sections. Through analysis, a series of important conclusions have been drawn. For the main flow, the structure of turning sections has obvious influence on the characteristics of flow field. The size and number of vortices in the corner area are si…
An SPIV experiment using two orthogonal planes simultaneously was performed in the LML boundary layer facility to specifically measure all of the derivative moments needed to estimate the dissipation rate of the Turbulence Kinetic Energy. The Reynolds number was $Re_θ= 7500$ or $Re_τ= 2300$. A detailed analysis of the errors in derivative measurements was carried out, as well as applying and using consistency checks derived from the continuity equation. The random noise error was quantified, and used to ``de-noise'' the derivative moments. A comparison with a DNS channel flow at comparable Rey…
Fundamental insight into the physics of buoyant gas dispersion from realistic flow geometries is necessary to accurately predict flow structures associated with hydrogen outflow from accidental leaks and the associated flammability envelope. Using helium as an experimental proxy, turbulent buoyant jets issuing from high-aspect-ratio slots on the side wall of a circular tube were studied experimentally applying simultaneous particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques. Two slots with an aspect ratio of 10 were considered in this study. The effects of …
We develop a passive control strategy for suppressing thermoacoustic instability in a bluff-body stabilized premixed turbulent combustor. When the equivalence ratio is varied, there is a transition from combustion noise to thermoacoustic instability via intermittency in the combustor. We perform simultaneous acoustic pressure, 2D-PIV, and CH$^*$ chemiluminescence measurements to capture the pressure fluctuations, the velocity field, and the heat release rate (HRR) field during the transition. We measure the spatial distribution of the amplitude of turbulent velocity at the acoustic frequency, …
