Coronal holes are large-scale structures in the solar atmosphere that feature a reduced temperature and density in comparison to the surrounding quiet Sun and are usually associated with open magnetic fields. We perform a differential emission measure analysis on the 707 non-polar coronal holes collected in the Collection of Analysis Tools for Coronal Holes (CATCH) catalog to derive and statistically analyze their plasma properties (i.e. temperature, electron density, and emission measure). We use intensity filtergrams of the six coronal EUV filters from the \textit{Atmospheric Imaging Assembly} onboard of the \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory}, which cover a temperature range from $ \approx 10^{5.5}$ to $10^{7.5}$\,K. Correcting the data for stray and scattered light, we find that all coronal holes have very similar plasma properties with an average temperature of $0.94 \pm 0.18$ MK, a mean electron density of $(2.4 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{8}$\,cm$^{-3}$, and a mean emission measure of $(2.8 \pm 1.6) \times 10^{26}$\,cm$^{-5}$. The temperature distribution within the coronal hole was found to be largely uniform, whereas the electron density shows a $40\,\%$ linear decrease from the boundary towards the inside of the coronal hole. At distances greater than \SI{20}{\arcsecond} ($\approx 15$\,Mm) from the nearest coronal hole boundary, the density also becomes statistically uniform. The coronal hole temperature may show a weak solar cycle dependency, but no statistically significant correlation of plasma properties to solar cycle variations could be determined throughout the observed time period between 2010 and 2019.
Coronal holes are usually defined as dark structures as seen in the extreme ultraviolet and X-ray spectrum which are generally associated with open magnetic field. Deriving reliably the coronal hole boundary is of high interest, as its area, underlying magnetic field, and other properties give important hints towards high speed solar wind acceleration processes and on compression regions arriving at Earth. In this study we present a new threshold based extraction method that incorporates the intensity gradient along the coronal hole boundary, which is implemented as a user-friendly SSWIDL GUI.…

The Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (CoMP) has opened up exciting opportunities to probe transverse MHD waves in the Sun's corona. The archive of CoMP data is utilised to generate a catalogue of quiescent coronal loops that can be used for studying propagating kink waves. The catalogue contains 120 loops observed between 2012-2014. This catalogue is further used to undertake a statistical study of propagating kink waves in the quiet regions of the solar corona, investigating phase speeds, loop lengths, footpoint power ratio and equilibrium parameter values. The statistical study enables us t…
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and other solar eruptive phenomena can be physically linked by combining data from a multitude of ground-based and space-based instruments alongside models, however this can be challenging for automated operational systems. The EU Framework Package 7 HELCATS project provides catalogues of CME observations and properties from the Helio- spheric Imagers onboard the two NASA/STEREO spacecraft in order to track the evolution of CMEs in the inner heliosphere. From the main HICAT catalogue of over 2,000 CME detections, an automated algorithm has been developed to connec…
We use magnetic field measurements by the Juno spacecraft to catalog and investigate interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) beyond 1 AU. During its cruise phase, Juno spent about 5 years in the solar wind between 2011 September and 2016 June, providing measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) between 1 and 5.4 AU. Juno therefore presents the most recent opportunity for a statistical analysis of ICME properties beyond 1 AU since the Ulysses mission (1990-2009). Our catalog includes 80 such ICME events, 32 of which contain associated flux-rope-like structures. We find that …
Identification of solar coronal holes (CHs) provides information both for operational space weather forecasting and long-term investigation of solar activity. Source data for the first problem are typically most recent solar disk observations, while for the second problem it is convenient to consider solar synoptic maps. Motivated by the idea that the concept of CHs should be similar for both cases we investigate universal models that can learn a CHs segmentation in disk images and reproduce the same segmentation in synoptic maps. We demonstrate that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) trained…

Current coronal holes segmentation methods typically rely on image thresholding and require non-trivial image pre- and post-processing. We have trained a neural network that accurately isolates CHs from SDO/AIA 193 Angstrom solar disk images without additional complicated steps. We compare results with publicly available catalogues of CHs and demonstrate stability of the neural network approach. In our opinion, this approach can outperform hand-engineered solar image analysis and will have a wide application to solar data. In particular, we investigate long-term variations of CH indices within…
This study investigates and compares brightness and area of coronal bright points (CBPs) inside and outside of coronal holes (CHs) using the single-dish Band 6 observations by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), combined with extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) 193 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ filtergrams obtained by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and magnetograms obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), both on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The CH boundaries were extracted from the SDO/AIA images using the Collection of Analysis Tools for Coronal H…
Post-flare arcades are well-known components of solar flare evolution, which have been observed for several decades. Coronal rain, cascades of catastrophically-cooled plasma, outline the loops and provide eye-catching evidence of the recent flare. These events are acknowledged to be common, but the scientific literature does not include any statistical overview documenting just how common the phenomenon actually is. This study reviews Solar Dynamics Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO AIA) observations of 241 flares collected from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) database b…
We present the finalized catalog of solar energetic proton events detected by Wind/EPACT instrument over the period 1996-2016. Onset times, peak times, peak proton intensity and onset-to-peak proton fluence are evaluated for the two available energy channels, at about 25 and 50 MeV. We describe the procedure utilized to identify the proton events and to relate them to their solar origin (in terms of flares and coronal mass ejections). The statistical relationships between the energetic protons and their origin (linear and partial correlation analysis) are reported and discussed in view of earl…
The strength of the radial component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), which is a measure of the Sun's total open flux, is observed to vary by roughly a factor of two over the 11 yr solar cycle. Several recent studies have proposed that the Sun's open flux consists of a constant or "floor" component that dominates at sunspot minimum, and a time-varying component due to coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Here, we point out that CMEs cannot account for the large peaks in the IMF strength which occurred in 2003 and late 2014, and which coincided with peaks in the Sun's equatorial dipole mom…

The study of the evolution of coronal holes (CHs) is especially important in the context of high-speed solar wind streams (HSS) emanating from them. Stream interaction regions may deliver large amount of energy into the Earths system, cause geomagnetic storms, and shape interplanetary space. By statistically analysing 16 long-living CHs observed by the SDO, we focus on coronal, morphological and underlying photospheric magnetic field characteristics as well as investigate the evolution of the associated HSSs. We use CATCH to extract and analyse CHs using observations taken by AIA and HMI. We d…
The adopted WSA model embedded in EUHFORIA (EUropean Heliospheric FORecasting Information Asset) is compared to EUV observations. According to the standard paradigm coronal holes are sources of open flux thus we use remote sensing EUV observations and \textsc{catch} (Collection of Analysis Tools for Coronal Holes) to extract CH areas and compare them to the open flux areas modelled by EUHFORIA. From the adopted WSA model we employ only the Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) model for the inner corona and the Schatten Current Sheet (SCS) model for the outer (PFSS+SCS). The height, $R_{\rm ss…
Bipolar magnetic regions (BMRs) are the cornerstone of solar variability. They are tracers of the large-scale magnetic processes that give rise to the solar cycle, shapers of the solar corona, building blocks of the large-scale solar magnetic field, and significant contributors to the free-energetic budget that gives rise to flares and coronal mass ejections. Surprisingly, no homogeneous catalog of BMRs exists today, in spite of the existence of systematic measurements of the magnetic field since the early 1970's. The purpose of this work is to address this deficiency by creating a homogenous …
Multi-wavelength high-resolution observations of a small-scale emerging magnetic flux event and the chromospheric and coronal response
It has long been known that the high-speed stream (HSS) peak velocity at Earth directly depends on the area of the coronal hole (CH) on the Sun. Different degrees of association between the two parameters have been shown by many authors. In this study, we revisit this association in greater detail for a sample of 45 nonpolar CHs during the minimum phase of solar cycle 24. The aim is to understand how CHs of different properties influence the HSS peak speeds observed at Earth and draw from this to improve solar wind modeling. The characteristics of the CHs of our sample were extracted based on …

We present a statistical analysis of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) imaged by the Heliospheric Imager (HI) instruments aboard NASAs twin-spacecraft STEREO mission between April 2007 and August 2017 for STEREO-A and between April 2007 and September 2014 for STEREO-B. The analysis exploits a catalogue that was generated within the FP7 HELCATS project. Here, we focus on the observational characteristics of CMEs imaged in the heliosphere by the inner (HI-1) cameras. More specifically, in this paper we present distributions of the basic observational parameters - namely occurrence frequency, central…
We present a catalog of solar energetic particle (SEP) events covering solar cycles 22, 23 and 24. We correlate and integrate three existing catalogs based on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) integral proton flux data. We visually verified and labeled each event in the catalog to provide a homogenized data set. We have identified a total of 341 SEP events of which 245 cross the space weather prediction center (SWPC) threshold of a significant proton event. The metadata consists of physical parameters and observables concerning the possible source solar eruptions, namely…
We report on a statistical study of prominence eruptions (PEs) using a catalog of these events routinely imaged by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 304 Å pass band. Using an algorithm developed as part of an LWS project, we have detected PEs in 304 Å synoptic images with 2-min cadence since May 2010. A catalog of these PEs is made available online (https://cdaw.gsfc.nasa.gov/CME_list/autope/). The 304 Å images are polar-transformed and divided by a background map (pixels with minimum intensity during one day) to get the ratio maps abov…
We compare the properties of halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that originate close to the limb (within a central meridian distance range of 60 to 90 deg) during solar cycles 23 and 24 to quantify the effect of the heliospheric state on CME properties. There are 44 and 38 limb halos in the cycles 23 and 24, respectively. Normalized to the cycle-averaged total sunspot number, there are 42 percent more limb halos in cycle 24. Although the limb halos as a population is very fast (average speed 1464 km s-1), cycle-24 halos are slower by 26 percent than the cycle-23 halos. We introduce a new param…
Solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun into the corona and interplanetary space. They are the most significant drivers of adverse space weather at Earth and other locations in the heliosphere, so it is important to understand the physics governing their eruption and propagation. However the diffuse morphology and transient nature of CMEs makes them difficult to identify and track using traditional image processing techniques. In this thesis the implementation of multiscale image processing techniques to identify and track the CME…
We analyse the characteristics of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) during Solar Cycles 23 and 24. The present analysis is primarily based on the near-Earth ICME catalogue (Richardson and Cane, 2010). An important aspect of this study is to understand the near-Earth and geoeffective aspects of ICMEs in terms of their association (type II ICMEs) versus absence (non-type II ICMEs) of decameter-hectometer (DH) type II radio bursts, detected by Wind/WAVES and STEREOS/WAVES. Notably, DH type II radio bursts driven by a CME indicate powerful MHD shocks leaving the inner corona and enteri…
Alerts of potentially hazardous coronal mass ejections (CME) are based on the detection of rapid changes in remote observations of the solar atmosphere. This paper presents a method that detects and estimates the central coordinates of CME eruptions in Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) data, with the dual aim of providing an early alert, and giving an initial estimate of the CME direction of propagation to a CME geometrical model. In particular, we plan to link the ALMANAC method to the CME detection and characterisation module of the Space Weather Empirical Ensemble Package (SWEEP), which is a fully …
CoSEE-Cat: A Comprehensive Solar Energetic Electron event Catalogue obtained from combined in situ and remote-sensing observations from Solar Orbiter -- Catalogue description and first statistical results
Solar type II radio bursts are the signature of particle acceleration by shock waves in the solar corona and interplanetary medium. The shocks originate in solar eruptions involving coronal mass ejections (CMEs) moving at super-Alfvenic speeds. Type II bursts occur at frequencies ranging from hundreds of MHz to tens of kHz, which correspond to plasma frequencies prevailing in the inner heliosphere from the base of the solar corona to the vicinity of Earth. Type II radio bursts occurring at frequencies below the ionospheric cutoff are of particular importance, because they are due to very energ…
