A singular foliation $\mathcal F$ gives a partition of a manifold $M$ into leaves whose dimension may vary. Associated to a singular foliation are two complexes, that of the diffeological differential forms on the leaf space $M / \mathcal F$, and that of the basic differential forms on $M$. We prove the pullback by the quotient map provides an isomorphism of these complexes in the following cases: when $\mathcal F$ is a regular foliation, when points in the leaves of the same dimension assemble into an embedded (more generally, diffeological) submanifold of $M$, and, as a special case of the latter, when $\mathcal F$ is induced by a linearizable Lie groupoid.
We propose a produre of reduction a locally conformal symplectic structure. This procedure of reduction can be applied to wide class of submanifolds. There are no local obstructions for this procedure. But there are global obstructions. We find a necessary and sufficient condition when this reduction holds in terms of the special kind of de Rham cohomology class (tangent to the characteristic foliation) of the Lee form.
On the slit tangent manifold of a Finsler manifold M are given the vertical and the Liouville foliations. In this paper we define some new types of vertical forms with respect to the Liouville foliation on TM^0. We define a cohomology group of TM^0 using these new forms. We prove a de Rham type theorem.
We prove transverse Weitzenböck identities for the horizontal Laplacians of a totally geodesic foliation. As a consequence, we obtain nullity theorems for the de Rham cohomology assuming only the positivity of curvature quantities transverse to the leaves. Those curvature quantities appear in the adiabatic limit of the canonical variation of the metric.
Let $(M,\mathcal{F})$ be a foliated manifold. We prove that there is a canonical isomorphism between the complex of base-like forms $Ω^*_b(M,\mathcal{F})$ of the foliation and the "De Rham complex" of the space of leaves $M/\mathcal{F}$ when considered as a "diffeological" quotient. Consequently, the two corresponding cohomology groups $H^*_b(M,\mathcal{F})$ and $H^*(M/\mathcal{F})$ are isomorphic.
We compute the de Rham cohomology of the weak stable foliation of the geodesic flow of a connected orientable closed hyperbolic surface with various coefficients. For most of the coefficients, we also give certain "Hodge decompositions" of the corresponding de Rham complexes, which are not obtained by the usual Hodge theory of foliations. These results are based on unitary representation theory of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. As an application we obtain an answer to a problem considered by Haefliger and Li around 1980.
The purpose of this paper is to present a ``Cech-De Rham'' model for the cohomology of leaf spaces. This model lends itself to the construction of characteristic classes (in the cohomology of classifying spaces) by explicit geometrical constructions which are immediate extensions of the standard constructions for manifolds. In particular we rediscover (and explain) the Thurston formula and the Bott formulas for cocycles on diffeomorphism groups. We also use the Cech-De Rham model to explicitly describe the relation between the cohomology of the classifying space, the basic cohomology, and the …
We define the Analytical signature, the Hodge signature and the de Rham signature for a foliated manifold with boundary with foliation transverse to the boundary. We show that all these signatures coincide and a Hirzebruch formula is valid.
It is shown that the characteristic classes of foliations that were defined by Losik and that take values in the de~Rham cohomology of the space of infinite order frames over the leaf space may be mapped to the characteristic classes with values in the Čech-de~Rham cohomology of the leaf space studied in details by Crainic and Moerdijk. This map is in general non-injective. All constructions are done using Losik's approach to Gelfand formal geometry. A similar result is obtained for the exotic characteristic classes as well as for the group actions of the diffeomorphisms. As illustrating examp…
We present examples of foliations with infinite dimensional basic symplectic and com- plex cohomologies, along with a general sufficient condition for such phenomena. This puts re- strictions on possible generalizations of several finiteness results from Riemannian foliations to any broader class. The examples are also noteworthy for the unusual behaviour of their basic de Rham cohomology.
Let (M,F) be a foliated manifold. We study the relationship between the basic cohomology Hb(M,F) of the foliation and the De Rham cohomology H(DF) of the space of leaves M/F as a quotient diffeological space. We prove that for an arbitrary foliation there is a morphism from H(DF) to Hb(M,F). It is an isomorphism when F is a Q-foliation.
We study the geometry of the leaf closure space of regular and singular Riemannian foliations. We give conditions which assure that this leaf space is a singular symplectic or Kähler space.
In this paper, we use the methods of subriemannian geometry to study the dual foliation of the singular Riemannian foliation induced by isometric Lie group actions on a complete Riemannian manifold M. We show that under some conditions, the dual foliation has only one leaf.
Singular Riemannian Foliations are particular types of foliations on Riemannian manifolds, in which leaves locally stay at a constant distance from each other. Singular Riemannian Foliations in round spheres play a special role, since they provide "infinitesimal information" about general Singular Riemannian Foliations. In this paper we show that Singular Riemannian Foliations in spheres, of dimension at most 3, are orbits of an isometric group action.
A singular foliation is a partition of a manifold into leaves of perhaps varying dimension. Stefan and Sussmann carried out fundamental work on singular foliations in the 1970s. We survey their contributions, show how diffeological objects and ideas arise naturally in this setting, and highlight some consequences within diffeology. We then introduce a definition of transverse equivalence of singular foliations, following Molino's definition for regular foliations. We show that, whereas transverse equivalent singular foliations always have diffeologically diffeomorphic leaf spaces, the converse…
A singular foliation in the sense of Androulidakis and Skandalis is an involutive and locally finitely generated module of compactly supported vector fields on a manifold. An automorphism of a singular foliation is a diffeomorphism that preserves the module. In this note, we give an alternative proof of the (surprisingly non-trivial) fundamental fact that the time-one flow of an element of a singular foliation (i.e. its exponential) is an automorphism of the singular foliation.
We prove the nonexistence of a proper singular Riemannian foliation admitting section in compact manifolds of nonpositive curvature. Then we give a global description of proper singular Riemannian foliations admitting sections on Hadamard manifolds. In addition by using the theory of taut immersions we provide a short proof of this result in the special case of a polar action.
In this paper we prove the conjecture of Molino that for every singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\mathcal{F})$, the partition $\bar{\mathcal{F}}$ given by the closures of the leaves of $\mathcal{F}$ is again a singular Riemannian foliation.
We prove that a submanifold with parallel focal structure, which is a generalization of isoparametric and equifocal submanifolds, induces a singular Riemannian foliation of the ambient space by its parallel and focal manifolds.
We determine the structure of the fundamental group of the regular leaves of a closed singular Riemannian foliation on a compact, simply connected Riemannian manifold. We also study closed singular Riemannian foliations whose leaves are homeomorphic to aspherical or to Bieberbach manifolds. These foliations, which we call A-foliations and B-foliations, respectively, generalize isometric torus actions on Riemannian manifolds. We apply our results to the classification problem of compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- and 5-manifolds with positive or nonnegative sectional curvature.
In this paper we introduce the notion of deformation cohomology for singular foliations and related objects (namely integrable differential forms and Nambu structures), and study it in the local case, i.e., in the neighborhood of a point.
In this paper we introduce the concept of singular Finsler foliation, which generalizes the concepts of Finsler actions, Finsler submersions and (regular) Finsler foliations. We show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a singular Finsler foliation on a Randers manifold $(M,Z)$ with Zermelo data $(\mathtt{h},W),$ then $\mathcal{F}$ is a singular Riemannian foliation on the Riemannian manifold $(M,\mathtt{h} )$. As a direct consequence we infer that the regular leaves are equifocal submanifolds (a generalization of isoparametric submanifolds) when the wind $W$ is an infinitesimal homothety of $\mathtt{h}$ …
A singular (or Hermann) foliation on a smooth manifold $M$ can be seen as a subsheaf of the sheaf $\mathfrak{X}$ of vector fields on $M$. We show that if this singular foliation admits a resolution (in the sense of sheaves) consisting of sections of a graded vector bundle of finite type, then one can lift the Lie bracket of vector fields to a Lie $\infty$-algebroid structure on this resolution, that we call a universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid associated to the foliation. The name is justified because it is isomorphic (up to homotopy) to any other Lie $\infty$-algebroid structure built on any ot…
We introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations - understood as suitable families of vector fields - that preserves their transverse geometry. Associated to every singular foliation there is a holonomy groupoid, by the work of Androulidakis-Skandalis. We show that our notion of equivalence is compatible with this assignment, and as a consequence we obtain several invariants. Further, we show that it unifies some of the notions of transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's.
We give a new construction of the holonomy and fundamental groupoids of a singular foliation. In contrast with the existing construction of Androulidakis and Skandalis, our method proceeds by taking a quotient of an infinite dimensional space of paths. This strategy is a direct extension of the classical construction for regular foliations and mirrors the integration of Lie algebroids via paths (per Crainic and Fernandes). In this way, we obtain a characterization of the holonomy and fundamental groupoids of a singular foliation that more clearly reflects the homotopic character of these invar…
It is well-known that any isotopically connected diffeomorphism group $G$ of a manifold determines uniquely a singular foliation $\F_G$. A one-to-one correspondence between the class of singular foliations and a subclass of diffeomorphism groups is established. As an illustration of this correspondence it is shown that the commutator subgroup $[G,G]$ of an isotopically connected, factorizable and non-fixing $C^r$-diffeomorphism group $G$ is simple iff the foliation $\F_{[G,G]}$ defined by $[G,G]$ admits no proper minimal sets. In particular, the compactly supported $e$-component of the leaf pr…
In this paper we survey on some recent results on Riemannian orbifolds and singular Riemannian foliations and combine them to conclude the existence of closed geodesics in the leaf space of some classes of singular Riemannian foliations (s.r.f.), namely s.r.f. that admit sections or have no horizontal conjugate points. We also investigate the shortening process with respect to Riemannian foliations.
We show that a Bott-Morse foliation in dimension 3 admits a linear, singular, Poisson structure of rank 2 with Bott-Morse singularities. We provide the Poisson bivectors for each type of singular component, and compute the symplectic forms of the characteristic distribution.
For a singular Riemannian foliation whose leaves are properly embedded, we show in the first part of this article the existence of global tubular neighbourhoods, and we develop a global description of the foliation as stratification by types of leaves. The second part deals with the further restriction to a foliation without horizontal conjugate points, introduced by Lytchak and Thorbergsson, which in the special case of an isometric group action equals the concept of variationally completeness. Therefrom, we deduce a global geometric description -- the focal points of the leaves are exactly t…
In order to understand the linearization problem around a leaf of a singular foliation, we extend the familiar holonomy map from the case of regular foliations to the case of singular foliations. To this aim we introduce the notion of holonomy transformation. Unlike the regular case, holonomy transformations can not be attached to classes of paths in the foliation, but rather to elements of the holonomy groupoid of the singular foliation. This assignment is injective. Holonomy transformations allow us to link the linearization problem with the compactness of the isotropy group of the holonomy …
Using representations of Clifford algebras we construct indecomposable singular Riemannian foliations on round spheres, most of which are non-homogeneous. This generalizes the construction of non-homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces due to by Ferus, Karcher and Munzner.
We prove that an isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold admits a resolution preserving the transverse geometry if and only if the action is infinitesimally polar. We provide applications concerning topological simplicity of several classes of isometric actions, including polar and variationally complete ones. All results are proven in the more general case of singular Riemannian foliations.
This doctoral thesis has two objectives. The first objective is to introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations that preserves their transverse geometry and is compatible with the notions of Morita equivalence of the holonomy groupoids and the transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's. The second one is to describe the structures behind quotients of singular foliations and to connect these results with their associated holonomy groupoids. It also wants to give an introduction to the notion of singular foliations as given by Androulidakis and Skandal…
Given a singular Riemannian foliation on a compact Riemannian manifold, we study the mean curvature flow equation with a regular leaf as initial datum. We prove that if the leaves are compact and the mean curvature vector field is basic, then any finite time singularity is a singular leaf, and the singularity is of type I. These results generalize previous results of Liu and Terng, Pacini and Koike. In particular our results can be applied to partitions of Riemannian manifolds into orbits of actions of compact groups of isometries.
We introduce smooth L^\infty differential forms on a singular (semialgebraic) set X in R^n. Roughly speaking, a smooth L^\infty differential form is a certain class of equivalence of 'stratified forms', that is, a collection of smooth forms on disjoint smooth subsets (stratification) of X with matching tangential components on the adjacent strata and bounded size (in the metric induced from R^n). We identify the singular homology of X as the homology of the chain complex generated by semialgebraic singular simplices, i.e. continuous semialgebraic maps from the standard simplices into X. Singul…
In this paper we study singular riemannian foliations that have sections,i.e., totally geodesic complete immersed submanifolds that meet each leaf orthogonally and whose dimensions are the codimensions of the regular leaves. We prove here that the restriction of the foliation to a slice of a leaf is diffeomorphic to an isoparametric foliation on an open set of an euclidian space. This result gives us local information about the singular foliation and in particular about the singular stratification of the foliation. It also allows us to describe the plaques of the foliation as level sets of a t…
In this paper, we establish a number of results about the topology of the leaves of a closed singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\fol)$. If $M$ is simply connected, we prove that the leaves are finitely covered by nilpotent spaces, and characterize the fundamental group of the generic leaves. If $M$ has virtually nilpotent fundamental group, we prove that the leaves have virtually nilpotent fundamental group as well.
We present a new link between the Invariant Theory of infinitesimal singular Riemannian foliations and Jordan algebras. This, together with an inhomogeneous version of Weyl's First Fundamental Theorems, provides a characterization of the recently discovered Clifford foliations in terms of basic polynomials. This link also yields new structural results about infinitesimal foliations, such as the existence of non-trivial symmetries.
A singular foliation on a complete riemannian manifold M is said to be riemannian if each geodesic that is perpendicular at one point to a leaf remains perpendicular to every leaf it meets. We prove that the regular leaves are equifocal, i.e., the end point map of a normal foliated vector field has constant rank. This implies that we can reconstruct the singular foliation by taking all parallel submanifolds of a regular leaf with trivial holonomy. In addition, the end point map of a normal foliated vector field on a leaf with trivial holonomy is a covering map. These results generalize previou…
In this paper we investigate the mean curvature flow (MCF) of a regular leaf of a closed generalized isoparametric foliation as initial datum, generalizing previous results of Radeschi and first author. We show that, under bounded curvature conditions, any finite time singularity is a singular leaf, and the singularity is of type I. We also discuss the existence of basin of attractions, how cylinder structures can affect convergence of basic MCF of immersed submanifolds and make a few remarks on MCF of non closed leaves of generalized isoparametric foliation.
We describe a local model for any Singular Riemannian Foliation in a neighbourhood of a closed saturated submanifold of a regular stratum. Moreover we construct a Lie groupoid which controls the transverse geometry of the linear approximation of the Singular Riemannian Foliation around these submanifolds. We also discuss the closure of this Lie groupoid and its Lie algebroid.
We associate a Lie $\infty$-algebroid to every resolution of a singular foliation, where we consider a singular foliation as a locally generated $\mathscr{O}$-submodule of vector fields on the underlying manifold closed under Lie bracket. Here $\mathscr{O}$ can be the ring of smooth, holomorphic, or real analytic functions. The choices entering the construction of this Lie $\infty$-algebroid, including the chosen underlying resolution, are unique up to homotopy and, moreover, every other Lie $\infty$-algebroid inducing the same foliation or any of its sub-foliations factorizes through it in an…
We compute an $L_\infty$-algebroid structure on a projective resolution of some classes of singular foliations on a vector space $V$ induced by the linear action of some Lie subalgebra of $\mathfrak {gl}(V)$. This $L_\infty$-algebroid provides invariants of the singular foliations, and also provides a constant-rank replacement of the singular foliation. We do this by first explicitly constructing projective resolutions of the singular foliations induced by the natural linear actions of endomorphisms of $V$ preserving a subspace $W\subset V$, the Lie algebra of traceless endomorphisms, and the …
In this paper we review some author's results about singular holonomy of singular riemannian foliations with sections (s.r.f.s for short) and also some results of a joint work with Toeben and a joint work with Gorodski. We stress here that the condition that the leaves are compact, used in some of these results, can be replaced by the condition that the leaves are closed embedded. We also briefly recall some of Toeben's results about blow-up of s.r.f.s. Then we use this technique to get conditions under which a holonomy map can be extended to a global isometry.
In this paper, we first prove that any closed simply connected 4-manifold that admits a decomposition into two disk bundles of rank greater than 1 is diffeomorphic to one of the standard elliptic 4-manifolds: $\mathbb{S}^4$, $\mathbb{CP}^2$, $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2$, or $\mathbb{CP}^2\#\pm \mathbb{CP}^2$. As an application we prove that any closed simply connected 4-manifold admitting a nontrivial singular Riemannian foliation is diffeomorphic to a connected sum of copies of standard $\mathbb{S}^4$, $\pm\mathbb{CP}^2$ and $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2$. A classification of singular R…
