Parton distributions can be defined in terms of the entropy of entanglement between the spatial region probed by deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and the rest of the proton. For very small $x$, the proton becomes a maximally entangled state. This approach leads to a simple relation $S = \ln N $ between the average number $N$ of color-singlet dipoles in the proton wave function and the entropy of the produced hadronic state $S$. At small $x$, the multiplicity of dipoles is given by the gluon structure function, $N = x G(x,Q^2)$. Recently, the H1 Collaboration analyzed the entropy of the produced hadronic state in DIS, and studied its relation to the gluon structure function; poor agreement with the predicted relation was found. In this letter we argue that a more accurate account of the number of color-singlet dipoles in the kinematics of H1 experiment (where hadrons are detected in the current fragmentation region) is given not by $xG(x,Q^2)$ but by the sea quark structure function $xΣ(x,Q^2)$. Sea quarks originate from the splitting of gluons, so at small $x$ $xΣ(x,Q^2)\,\sim\, xG(x,Q^2)$, but in the current fragmentation region this proportionality is distorted by the contribution of the quark-antiquark pair produced by the virtual photon splitting. In addition, the multiplicity of color-singlet dipoles in the current fragmentation region is quite small, and one needs to include $\sim 1/N$ corrections to $S= \ln N$ asymptotic formula. Taking both of these modifications into account, we find that the data from the H1 Collaboration in fact agree well with the prediction based on entanglement.
Predictions for light charged hadron production data in the current fragmentation region of deeply inelastic scattering from the H1 and ZEUS experiments are calculated using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, and using fragmentation functions obtained by fitting to similar data from $e^+ e^-$ reactions. General good agreement is found when the magnitude $Q^2$ of the hard photon's virtuality is sufficiently large. The discrepancy at low $Q$ and small scaled momentum $x_p$ is reduced by incorporating mass effects of the detected hadron. By performing quark tagging, the…
Using non-linear evolution equations of QCD, we compute the von Neumann entropy of the system of partons resolved by deep inelastic scattering at a given Bjorken $x$ and momentum transfer $q^2 = - Q^2$. We interpret the result as the entropy of entanglement between the spatial region probed by deep inelastic scattering and the rest of the proton. At small $x$ the relation between the entanglement entropy $S(x)$ and the parton distribution $xG(x)$ becomes very simple: $S(x) = \ln[ xG(x) ]$. In this small $x$, large rapidity $Y$ regime, all partonic micro-states have equal probabilities -- the p…
We derive correlated bounds on ratios of deep inelastic structure functions from the dipole picture of photon-hadron scattering at high energies. In particular we consider ratios of the longitudinal structure function, the total structure function and the charm part of the latter. We also consider ratios of total structure functions taken at the same energy but at three different photon virtualities. It is shown that by confronting these bounds with experimental data we can significantly constrain the range of validity of the dipole picture.
Charged particle multiplicity distributions in positron-proton deep inelastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV are measured. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $136$ pb${}^{-1}$. Charged particle multiplicities are measured as a function of photon virtuality $Q^2$, inelasticity $y$ and pseudorapidity $η$ in the laboratory and the hadronic centre-of-mass frames. Predictions from different Monte Carlo models are compared to the data. The first and second moments of the multiplicity distributions are determined …
Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) samples a part of the wave function of a hadron in the vicinity of the light cone. Lipatov constructed a spin chain which describes the amplitude of DIS in leading logarithmic approximation. Kharzeev and Levin proposed the entanglement entropy as an observable in DIS [Phys. Rev. D 95, 114008 (2017)], and suggested a relation between the entanglement entropy and parton distributions. Here we represent the DIS process as a local quench in the Lipatov's spin chain, and study the time evolution of the produced entanglement entropy. We show that the resulting entangl…
The partons model reveals the dynamical structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons). Studies related to thermodynamic quantities of nucleons are interesting and topical questions. In this work, for the first time we apply Page's theory of the studies of black hole to investigate the entropy of proton system. Inspired by the quantum entanglement entropy in black hole information theories, we establish the proton entanglement with the similar way. Based our calculations, the proton entanglement entropy has the approximate form $S = \ln m -1/2$, where $m$ represents the partons density of proton…

We study the proposal by Kharzeev-Levin to determine entanglement entropy in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) from parton distribution functions (PDFs) and to relate the former to the entropy of final state hadrons. We find several uncertainties in the current comparison to data, in particular the overall normalization, the relation between charged versus total hadron multiplicity in the comparison to experimental results as well as different methods to determine the number of partons in Deep Inelastic Scattering. We further provide a comparison to data based on leading order HERA PDF as well a…

Relying on previous results that link entanglement entropy and parton distribution functions in deep inelastic scattering and focusing on the small Bjorken scaling region we present here indications that gluon shadowing might indeed be explained as due to a depletion of the entanglement entropy between observed and unobserved degrees of freedom per nucleon within a nucleus with respect to the free nucleon case. We apply to gluon shadowing the general Page approach to the calculation of the entanglement entropy in bipartite systems, giving physical motivations of the results.
We show that quantum entanglement between causally separated regions of a nucleon in antineutrino-nucleon scattering manifests itself as a thermal component in the resulting pion momentum distribution. For antineutrino scattering coherently from the (carbon) nucleus as a whole, this thermal component is absent, as expected by our quantum entanglement thermalization proposition. These phenomena, which have been observed in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, and in electromagnetic deep inelastic scattering, are now for the first time shown to exist in electroweak interactions…
The azimuthal decorrelation angle between the leading jet and scattered lepton in deep inelastic scattering is studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data was taken in the HERA II data-taking period and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 330 $\rm{pb^{-1}}$. Azimuthal angular decorrelation has been proposed to study the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the evolution of the transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) and understand the small-$x$ region, providing unique insight to nucleon structure. Previous decorrelation measurements of two jets have been performed in proton-proton collisions at…
In this work we analyse the entanglement entropy in deep inelastic scattering off protons and nuclei. It is computed based on the formalism where the partonic state at small-x is maximally entangled with proton being constituted by large number of microstates occuring with equal probabilities. We consider analytical expressions for the number of gluons, N_{gluon}, obtained from gluon saturation models for the dipole-target amplitudes within the QCD color dipole picture. In particular, the nuclear entanglement entropy per nucleon is studied. We also study the underlying uncertainties on these c…
Entanglement of the two scattered particles is expected to occur in elastic collisions, even at high energy where they are in competition with inelastic ones. We study how to evaluate quantitatively the corresponding entanglement entropy $S_{\rm EE}.$ For this sake, we regularize the divergences occurring in the formal derivation of $S_{\rm EE}$ using a regularization procedure acting on the two-particle Hilbert space of final states. A quantitative application is performed in proton-proton collisions at collider energies, comparing the results of $S_{\rm EE}$ with two different cut-offs and w…
The origin of the apparent thermalization in high-energy collisions is investigated using the data of the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at the LHC. For this purpose, we analyze the transverse momentum distributions in the following proton-proton collision processes, all at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV: i) inclusive inelastic $pp$ collisions; ii) single- and double-diffractive Drell-Yan production $pp \to μ^+ μ^- X$; and iii) Higgs boson production. We confirm the relation between the effective temperature and the hard scattering scale observed at lower energies, and find that it extends even to the Higg…
The measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for baryon production in the target fragmentation region of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS), can produce important insight into those nonperturbative aspects of QCD directly associated with confinement and with the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry. We discuss here, interns of spin-directed momentum transfers, the powerful quantum field-theoretical constraints on the spin-orbit dynamics underlying these transverse spin observables. The spin-directed momentum shifts, originating either in the target nucleon or in the QCD…
Using Mueller's dipole formalism for deep inelastic scattering in QCD, we formulate and solve the evolution for the generating function for the multiplicities of the produced particles, in hadronic processes at high energy. The solution for the multiplicities satisfies Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling, with good agreement with the recently re-analyzed data from the H1 experiment at HERA (DESY), and the old ALEPH data for hadronic $Z$ decay at LEP (CERN). The same scaling function with KNO scaling, carries to the hadronic multiplicities from jets in electron-positron annihilation. This agreeme…

The relation between the gluon density in a hadron and entanglement entropy can shed a new light on the high energy scattering behavior of hadrons. Using the holographic light-front QCD framework the growth above the classical geometric cross section is directly related to the increase of the internal quantum entropy from the entangled parton distribution in hadrons. A rather consistent picture emerges from the scale dependence of the Pomeron from the QCD evolution of the gluon distribution function $g(x, μ)$, the rising of the integrated cross section in photoproduction of vector mesons, the …
We consider a general quantum field relativistic scattering involving two half spin fermions, $A$ and $B$, which are initially entangled with another fermion $C$ that does not participate in the scattering dynamics. We construct general expressions for the reduced spin matrices for the out-state considering a general tripartite spin-entangled state. In particular we study an inelastic QED process at tree-level, namely $e^-e^+\rightarrow μ^- μ^+$ and a half spin fermion $C$ as an spectator particle which can be entangled to the $AB$ system in the following ways: W state, GHZ state, $|\text{A}^α…
