In this paper we prove the case $dim(V_3)=3$ of a conjecture about the exterior operad $Λ^{S^2}_{V_d}$. For this we introduce a collection of natural involutions on the set of homogeneous cycle-free $d$-partitions of the complete graph $K_{2d}$, and show that these involutions correspond to the relations in $Λ^{S^2}_{V_d}(2d+1)$. When $d=3$ this correspondence allows us to give an explicit description of a determinant-like map and to settle the above mentioned conjecture.
In this paper we introduce a determinant-like map $det^{S^3}$ and study some of its properties. For this we define a graded vector space $Λ^{S^3}_V$ that has similar properties with the exterior algebra $Λ_V$ and the exterior GSC-operad $Λ^{S^2}_V$ from \cite{sta2}. When $dim(V_2)=2$ we show that $dim_k(Λ^{S^3}_{V_2}[6])=1$ which gives the existence and uniqueness of $det^{S^3}$. We also give an explicit formula for $det^{S^3}$ as a sum over certain $2$-partitions of the complete hypergraph $K_6^3$.
We give a new proof of a determinant evaluation due to Andrews, which has been used to enumerate cyclically symmetric and descending plane partitions. We also prove some related results, including a q-analogue of Andrews's determinant.
We prove a constant term conjecture of Robbins and Zeilberger (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 17-27), by translating the problem into a determinant evaluation problem and evaluating the determinant. This determinant generalizes the determinant that gives the number of all totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions contained in a $(2n)\times(2n)\times(2n)$ box and that was used by Andrews (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 28-39) and Andrews and Burge (Pacific J. Math. 158 (1993), 1-14) to compute this number explicitly. The evaluation of the generalized determinant is indepen…
Symmetries of plane partitions and the permanent-determinant method
在论文[J. Combin。理论系列A 43(1986),103- 113],斯坦利给出了在十个对称类中的每一个中的平面划分数的公式。本文结合Andrews [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66(1994),28-39]和Stembridge [Adv.

We give a closed formula for the number of partitions $λ$ of $n$ such that the corresponding irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant. We determine how many of these partitions are self-conjugate and how many are hooks. This is achieved by characterizing the $2$-core towers of such partitions. We also obtain a formula for the number of partitions of $n$ such that the associated permutation representation of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant.
We prove that the isomonodromic tau function on a torus with Fuchsian singularities and generic monodromies in $GL(N,\mathbb{C})$ can be written in terms of a Fredholm determinant of Cauchy-Plemelj operators. We further show that the minor expansion of this Fredholm determinant is described by a series labeled by charged partitions. As an example, we show that in the case of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ this combinatorial expression takes the form of a dual Nekrasov-Okounkov partition function, or equivalently of a free fermion conformal block on the torus. Based on these results, we also propose a defi…
We investigate the least common multiple of all subdeterminants, lcmd(A x B), of a Kronecker product of matrices, of which one is an integral matrix A with two columns and the other is the incidence matrix of a complete graph with n vertices. We prove that this quantity is the least common multiple of lcmd(A) to the power n-1 and certain binomial functions of the entries of A.
The permanent-determinant method and its generalization, the Hafnian-Pfaffian method, are methods to enumerate perfect matchings of plane graphs that was discovered by P. W. Kasteleyn. We present several new techniques and arguments related to the permanent-determinant with consequences in enumerative combinatorics. Here are some of the results that follow from these techniques: 1. If a bipartite graph on the sphere with 4n vertices is invariant under the antipodal map, the number of matchings is the square of the number of matchings of the quotient graph. 2. The number of matchings of the edg…
Consideration of a question of E. R. Berlekamp led Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville to give a combinatorial interpretation of the entries of certain matrices of determinant~1 in terms of lattice paths. Here we generalize this result by refining the matrix entries to be multivariate polynomials, and by determining not only the determinant but also the Smith normal form of these matrices. A priori the Smith form need not exist but its existence follows from the explicit computation. It will be more convenient for us to state our results in terms of partitions rather than lattice paths.
In this paper we settle a weak version of a conjecture (i.e. Conjecture 6) by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey in the paper "Self-complementary totally symmetric plane partitions" (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 42, 277-292). In other words we show that the number of shifted plane partitions invariant under an involution is equal to the number of alternating sign matrices invariant under the vertical flip. We also give a determinantal formula for the general conjecture (Conjecture 6), but this determinant is still hard to evaluate. In this paper we introduce two new classes of domino plane partitions, one …
A real symmetric matrix $A$ is said to be completely positive if it can be written as $BB^t$ for some (not necessarily square) nonnegative matrix $B$. A simple graph $G$ is called a completely positive graph if every doubly nonnegative matrix realization of $G$ is a completely positive matrix. Our aim in this manuscript is to compute the determinant and inverse (when it exists) of the distance matrix of a class of completely positive graphs. Similar to trees, we obtain a relation for the inverse of the distance matrix of a class of completely positive graphs involving the Laplacian matrix, a r…
We prove a determinantal identity concerning Schur functions for 2-staircase diagrams lambda=(ln+l',ln,l(n-1)+l',l(n-1),...,l+l',l,l',0). When l=1 and l'=0 these functions are related to the partition function of the 6-vertex model at the combinatorial point and hence to enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices. A consequence of our result is an identity concerning the doubly-refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the first, second, and so on rows of stochastically decaying partitions. We establish that, with appropriate scaling in time and length, the sequence of rows converges to the Airy$_2$ line ensemble. This result was first established, in a more general setting, by Borodin and Olshanski, who relied on the determinantal structure of the Poissonized correlation functions. Our argument is based on a different, combinatorial approach, developed by Okounkov. This approach may be useful in other problems in which no determinantal structure is availabl…
I consider the partition function of the inhomogeneous 6-vertex model defined on the $n$ by $n$ square lattice. This function depends on 2n spectral parameters $x_i$ and $y_i$ attached to the horizontal and vertical lines respectively. In the case of domain wall boundary conditions it is given by Izergin-Korepin determinant. For $q$ being a root of unity the partition function satisfies to a special linear functional equation. This equation is particularly good when the crossing parameter $η=2π/3$. In this case it can be used for solving some of the problems related to the enumeration of alter…
We consider the homogeneous components U_r of the map on R = k[x,y,z]/(x^A, y^B, z^C) that multiplies by x + y + z. We prove a relationship between the Smith normal forms of submatrices of an arbitrary Toeplitz matrix using Schur polynomials, and use this to give a relationship between Smith normal form entries of U_r. We also give a bijective proof of an identity proven by J. Li and F. Zanello equating the determinant of the middle homogeneous component U_r when (A, B, C) = (a + b, a + c, b + c) to the number of plane partitions in an a by b by c box. Finally, we prove that, for certain vecto…
We prove a conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey [Alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 34 (1983), 340-359] that, for any n, k, m and p, the number of nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs) for which the 1 of the first row is in column k+1 and there are exactly m -1's and m+p inversions is equal to the number of descending plane partitions (DPPs) for which each part is at most n and there are exactly k parts equal to n, m special parts and p nonspecial parts. The proof involves expressing the associated generating functions for ASMs and DPPs with f…
We prove three conjectures concerning the evaluation of determinants, which are related to the counting of plane partitions and rhombus tilings. One of them was posed by George Andrews in 1980, the other two were by Guoce Xin and Christian Krattenthaler. Our proofs employ computer algebra methods, namely, the holonomic ansatz proposed by Doron Zeilberger and variations thereof. These variations make Zeilberger's original approach even more powerful and allow for addressing a wider variety of determinants. Finally, we present, as a challenge problem, a conjecture about a closed-form evaluation …
The determinants of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices are calculated by via the oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and summing over an incidence generalization of vertex cycle-covers. These cycle-covers are signed and partitioned into families based on their hyperedge containment. Every non-edge-monic family is shown to contribute a net value of $0$ to the Laplacian, while each edge-monic family is shown to sum to the absolute value of the determinant of the original incidence matrix. Simple symmetries are identified as well as their relationship to Hadamard's maximum determinant problem. Finally, the entries…
In this note, we prove a law of large numbers for local patterns in plane partitions with geometric weight, a model introcued by Okounkov and Reshetikhin. Its proof is based on the determinantal structure of the corresponding point process, wich allows to control the decay of the correlations in a convenient manner.
In this article, we consider the monomial complete intersection algebra $\mathbb{K}[x,y]/\langle x^d,y^q\rangle$ in two variables. For elements $l_1,\ldots,l_{d+q-2k}$ of degree $1$, we give a formula of the deteminant of linear map from the homogeneous component of degree $k$ to the homogenous component of degree $d+q-k$ defined by the multiplication of $l_1 \cdots l_{d+q-2k}$.
Michael Somos conjectured a relation between Hankel determinants whose entries $\frac 1{2n+1}\binom{3n}n$ count ternary trees and the number of certain plane partitions and alternating sign matrices. Tamm evaluated these determinants by showing that the generating function for these entries has a continued fraction that is a special case of Gauss's continued fraction for a quotient of hypergeometric series. We give a systematic application of the continued fraction method to a number of similar Hankel determinants. We also describe a simple method for transforming determinants using the genera…
Recently, Naruse discovered a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogs of Naruse's hook length formula over semistandard Young tableaux (SSYTs) and reverse plane partitions (RPPs). As an application of their formula, they expressed certain $q$-Euler numbers, which are generating functions for SSYTs and RPPs of a zigzag border strip, in terms of weighted Dyck paths. They found a determinantal formula for the generating function for SSYTs of a skew staircase shape and proposed two conjectures related to RPPs of t…

We view the determinant and permanent as functions on directed weighted graphs and introduce their analogues for the undirected graphs. We prove that the task of computing the undirected determinants as well as permanents for planar graphs, whose vertices have degree at most 4, is \#P-complete. In the case of planar graphs whose vertices have degree at most 3, the computation of the undirected determinant remains \#P-complete while the permanent can be reduced to the FKT algorithm, and therefore is polynomial. The undirected permanent is a Holant problem and its complexity can be deduced from …
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding fa…
Using equivariant cohomology theory, Naruse obtained a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula respectively by counting semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ and reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/μ$. When $λ$ and $μ$ are both staircase shape partitions, Morales, Pak and Panova conjectured that the generating function of reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/ μ$ can be expressed as a determinant whose entries are related to $q$-analogues of the Euler numbers. The objective of th…
A connected graph is called a multi-block graph if each of its blocks is a complete multi-partite graph. Building on the work of \cite{Bp3,Hou3}, we compute the determinant and inverse of the distance matrix for a class of multi-block graphs.
An ordered partition of [n]:={1,2,..., n} is a sequence of its disjoint subsets whose union is [n]. The number of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is k!S(n,k), where S(n,k) is the Stirling number of second kind. In this paper we prove some refinements of this formula by showing that the generating function of some statistics on the set of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is a natural $q$-analogue of k!S(n,k). In particular, we prove several conjectures of Steingr\'ımsson. To this end, we construct a mapping from ordered partitions to walks in some digraphs and then, thanks to tra…
In this note we show that pattern matching in permutations is polynomial time reducible to pattern matching in set partitions. In particular, pattern matching in set partitions is NP-Complete.
A set of functions is defined which is indexed by a positive integer $n$ and partitions of integers. The case $n=1$ reproduces the standard Schur polynomials. These functions are seen to arise naturally as a determinant of an action on the frame bundle of an infinite grassmannian. This fact is well known in the case of the Schur polynomials ($n=1$) and has been used to decompose the $τ$-functions of the KP hierarchy as a sum. In the same way, the new functions introduced here ($n>1$) are used to expand quotients of $τ$-functions as a sum with Plucker coordinates as coefficients.
I conjecture three identities for the determinant of adjacency matrices of graphene triangles and trapezia with Bloch (and more general) boundary conditions. For triangles, the parametric determinant is equal to the characteristic polynomial of the symmetric Pascal matrix. For trapezia it is equal to the determinant of a sub-matrix. Finally, the determinant of the tight binding matrix equals its permanent. The conjectures are supported by analytic evaluations and Mathematica, for moderate sizes. They establish connections with counting problems of partitions, lozenge tilings of hexagons, dense…
We formulate a natural model of current loops and magnetic monopoles for arbitrary planar graphs, which we call the monopole-dimer model, and express the partition function of this model as a determinant. We then extend the method of Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher to calculate the partition function exactly in the case of rectangular grids. This partition function turns out to be a square of the partition function of an emergent monomer-dimer model when the grid sizes are even. We use this formula to calculate the local monopole density, free energy and entropy exactly. Our technique is a nove…
We prove a conjecture of H.Widom stated in [W] (math/0108008) about the reality of eigenvalues of certain infinite matrices arising in asymptotic analysis of large Toeplitz determinants. As a byproduct we obtain a new proof of A.Okounkov's formula for the (determinantal) correlation functions of the Schur measures on partitions.
Motivated by questions in algebra and combinatorics we study two ideals associated to a simple graph G: --> the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal defining the d-dimensional orthogonal representations of the graph complementary to G and --> the determinantal ideal of the (d+1)-minors of a generic symmetric with 0s in positions prescribed by the graph G. In characteristic 0 these two ideals turns out to be closely related and algebraic properties such as being radical, prime or a complete intersection transfer from the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal to the determinantal ideal. For Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver i…
This is a historical note. Bethe Ansatz solvable models are considered, for example XXZ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet and Bose gas with delta interaction. Periodic boundary conditions lead to Bethe equation. The square of the norm of Bethe wave function is equal to a determinant of linearized system of Bethe equations (determinant of matrix of second derivatives of Yang action). The proof was first published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol 86, page 391 in l982. Also domain wall boundary conditions for 6 vertex model were discovered in the same paper [see Appendix D]. These play an…
The XX0 Heisenberg model on a cyclic chain is considered. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The determinantal expressions of the form-factors and of the thermal correlation functions are obtained. The q-binomial determinants enable the connection of the form-factors with the generating functions both of boxed plane partitions and of self-avoiding lattice paths. The asymptotical behavior of the thermal correlation functions is studied…
We consider the partition function Z(N;x_1,...,x_N,y_1,...,y_N) of the square ice model with domain wall boundary. We give a simple proof of the symmetry of Z with respect to all its variables when the global parameter a of the model is set to the special value a=exp(iπ/3). Our proof does not use any determinantal interpretation of Z and can be adapted to other situations (for examples to some symmetric ice models).
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter…
$τ$-functions of certain Painlevé equations (PVI,PV,PIII) can be expressed as a Fredholm determinant. Further, the minor expansion of these determinants provide an interesting connection to Random partitions. This paper is a step towards understanding whether the $τ$-function of Painlevé II has a Fredholm determinant representation. The Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions are special one parameter solutions of Painlevé II and the corresponding $τ$-function is known to be the Fredholm determinant of the Airy Kernel. We develop a formalism for open contour in parallel to the one formulated in \ci…
