In this paper we study a neighborhood of generic singularities formed by mean curvature flow (MCF). We limit our consideration to the singularities modelled on $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ because, compared to the cases $\mathbb{S}^k\times \mathbb{R}^{l}$ with $l\geq 2$, the present case has the fewest possibilities to be considered. For various possibilities, we provide a detailed description for a small, but fixed, neighborhood of singularity, and prove that a small neighborhood of the singularity is mean convex, and the singularity is isolated. For the remaining possibilities, we conjecture that an entire neighborhood of the singularity becomes singular at the time of blowup, and present evidences to support this conjecture. A key technique is that, when looking for a dominating direction for the rescaled MCF, we need a normal form transformation, as a result, the rescaled MCF is parametrized over some chosen curved cylinder, instead over a standard straight one.
This is a long paper. The introduction is carefully written to present the key steps and ideas.
We consider one of the generic regimes of formation of singularities. We obtain a detailed description of a possibly small, but fixed, neighborhood of the blowup point, up to (and including) the blowup time, and find that it is mean convex. This confirms a conjecture by Ilmanen. And we find that the singularity is isolated from the other ones.
We study singularities of Gauss maps of fronts and give characterizations of types of singularities of Gauss maps by geometric properties of fronts which are related to behavior of bounded principal curvatures. Moreover, we investigate relation between a kind of boundedness of Gaussian curvatures near cuspidal edges and types of singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges. Further, we consider extended height functions on fronts with non-degenerate singular points.
In this paper, we study the singularities of spacelike constant mean curvature one (CMC 1) surfaces in the de Sitter 3-space. We prove the duality between generalized conelike singular points and 5/2-cuspidal edges on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces. To describe the duality between $A_{k+3}$ singularities and cuspidal $S_k$ singularities, we introduce two invariants, called the $α$-invariant and $σ$-invariant, of spacelike CMC 1 surfaces at their singular points. Moreover, we give a classification of non-degenerate singular points on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces.
We give criteria for which a principal curvature becomes a bounded $C^\infty$-function at non-degenerate singular points of wave fronts by using geometric invariants. As applications, we study singularities of parallel surfaces and extended distance squared functions of wave fronts. Moreover, we relate these singularities to some geometric invariants of fronts.
We study focal surfaces of (wave) fronts associated to unbounded principal curvatures near non-degenerate singular points of initial fronts. We give characterizations of singularities of those focal surfaces in terms of types of singularities and geometrical properties of initial fronts. Moreover, we investigate behavior of the Gaussian curvature of the focal surface.
