We study multiplicities of jumping numbers of multiplier ideals in a smooth variety of arbitrary dimension. We prove that the multiplicity function is a quasi-polynomial, hence proving that the Poincaré series is a rational function. We further study when the various components of the quasi-polynomial have the highest possible degree and relate it to jumping numbers contributed by Rees valuations. Finally, we study the special case of monomial ideals.
In this paper we make a systematic study of the multiplicity of the jumping points associated to the mixed multiplier ideals of a family of ideals in a complex surface with rational singularities. In particular we study the behaviour of the multiplicity by small perturbations of the jumping points. We also introduce a Poincaré series for mixed multiplier ideals and prove its rationality. Finally, we study the set of divisors that contribute to the log-canonical wall.
M. Saito recently proved that the jumping numbers of a hyperplane arrangement depend only on the combinatorics of the arrangement. However, a formula in terms of the combinatorial data was still missing. In this note, we give a formula and a different proof of the fact that the jumping numbers of a hyperplane arrangement depend only on the combinatorics. We also give a combinatorial formula for part of the Hodge spectrum and for the inner jumping multiplicities.
We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.
In this manuscript we shall give an explicit formula for the jumping numbers of a simple complete ideal in a two-dimensional regular local ring. In particular, we obtain a formula for the jumping numbers of an analytically irreducible plane curve. We then show that the jumping numbers determine the equisingularity class of the curve.
Let R be a two-dimensional regular local ring having an algebraically closed residue field and let a be a complete ideal of finite colength in R. In this article we investigate the jumping numbers of a by means of the dual graph of the minimal log resolution of the pair (X,a). Our main result is a combinatorial criterium for a positive rational number to be a jumping number. In particular, we associate to each jumping number certain ordered tree structures on the dual graph.
In this article we give an explicit formula for the jumping numbers of an ideal of finite colenght in a two-dimensional regular local ring with an algebraically closed residue field. For this purpose, we associate a certain numerical semigroup to each vertex of the dual graph of a log-resolution of the ideal.
We show that the $F$-jumping numbers of a pair $(X, \mathfrak a)$ in positive characteristic have no limit points whenever the symbolic Rees algebra of $-K_X$ is finitely generated outside an isolated collection of points. We also give a characteristic zero version of this result, as well as a generalization of the Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik-Gabber stabilization theorem describing the non-$F$-pure locus of a variety.
We prove a result relating the Jacobian ideal and the generalized test ideal associated to a principal ideal in $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ with $[k:k^p]<\infty$ or in $R=k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ with an arbitrary field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. As a consequence of this result, we establish an upper bound on the number of $F$-jumping coefficients of a principal ideal with an isolated singularity.
We prove that the $F$-jumping numbers of the test ideal $τ(X; Δ, \ba^t)$ are discrete and rational under the assumptions that $X$ is a normal and $F$-finite variety over a field of positive characteristic $p$, $K_X+Δ$ is $\bQ$-Cartier of index not divisible $p$, and either $X$ is essentially of finite type over a field or the sheaf of ideals $\ba$ is locally principal. This is the largest generality for which discreteness and rationality are known for the jumping numbers of multiplier ideals in characteristic zero.
We introduce two families of ideals, $F$-jumping ideals and $F$-Jacobian ideals, in order to study the singularities of hypersurfaces in positive characteristic. Both families are defined using the $D$-modules $M_α$ that were introduced by Blickle, Mustaţă and Smith. Using strong connections between $F$-jumping ideals and generalized test ideals, we give a characterization of $F$-jumping numbers for hypersurfaces. Furthermore, we give an algorithm that determines whether certain numbers are $F$-jumping numbers. In addition, we use $F$-Jacobian ideals to study intrinsic properties of the singul…
Suppose that $R$ is a ring essentially of finite type over a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$ and that $a \subseteq R$ is an ideal. We prove that the set of $F$-jumping numbers of $τ_b(R; a^t)$ has no limit points under the assumption that $R$ is normal and $Q$-Gorenstein -- we do \emph{not} assume that the $Q$-Gorenstein index is not divisible by $p$. Furthermore, we also show that the $F$-jumping numbers of $τ_b(R; Δ, a^t)$ are discrete under the more general assumption that $K_R + Δ$ is $\bR$-Cartier.
We explore the codimension one strata in the degree-one cohomology jumping loci of a finitely generated group, through the prism of the multivariable Alexander polynomial. As an application, we give new criteria that must be satisfied by fundamental groups of smooth, quasi-projective complex varieties. These criteria establish precisely which fundamental groups of boundary manifolds of complex line arrangements are quasi-projective. We also give sharp upper bounds for the twisted Betti ranks of a group, in terms of multiplicities constructed from the Alexander polynomial. For Seifert links in …
Given a smooth complex algebraic variety $X$ and a nonzero regular function $f$ on $X$, we give an effective estimate for the difference between the jumping numbers of $f$ and the $F$-jumping numbers of a reduction $f_p$ of $f$ to characteristic $p\gg 0$, in terms of the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial $b_f$ of $f$. As an application, we show that if $b_f$ has no roots of the form $-{\rm lct}(f)-n$, with $n$ a positive integer, then the $F$-pure threshold of $f_p$ is equal to the log canonical threshold of $f$ for $p\gg 0$ with $(p-1){\rm lct}(f)\in {\mathbf Z}$.
The aim of this paper is to study jumping numbers and multiplier ideals of any ideal in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a multiplier ideal determines the next jumping number. This leads to an algorithm to compute sequentially the jumping numbers and the whole chain of multiplier ideals in any desired range. As a consequence of our method we develop the notion of jumping divisor that allows to describe the jump between two consecutive multiplier ideals. In particular we find a unique minimal jumping divisor that is s…
The aim of this paper is to generalize the algorithm to compute jumping numbers on rational surfaces described in [AAD14] to varieties of dimension at least 3. Therefore, we introduce the notion of $π$-antieffective divisors, generalizing antinef divisors. Using these divisors, we present a way to find a small subset of the `classical' candidate jumping numbers of an ideal, containing all the jumping numbers. Moreover, many of these numbers are automatically jumping numbers, and in many other cases, it can be easily checked.
Given an ideal $a \subseteq R$ in a (log) $Q$-Gorenstein $F$-finite ring of characteristic $p > 0$, we study and provide a new perspective on the test ideal $τ(R, a^t)$ for a real number $t > 0$. Generalizing a number of known results from the principal case, we show how to effectively compute the test ideal and also describe $τ(R, a^t)$ using (regular) alterations with a formula analogous to that of multiplier ideals in characteristic zero. We further prove that the $F$-jumping numbers of $τ(R, a^t)$ as $t$ varies are rational and have no limit points, including the important case where $R$ i…
A formula for the jumping numbers of a curve unibranch at a singular point is established. The jumping numbers are expressed in terms of the Enriques diagram of the log resolution of the singularity, or equivalently in terms of the canonical set of generators of the semigroup of the curve at the singular point.
In this article, we study the jumping numbers of an ideal in the local ring at rational singularity on a complex algebraic surface. By understanding the contributions of reduced divisors on a fixed resolution, we are able to present an algorithm for finding of the jumping numbers of the ideal. This shows, in particular, how to compute the jumping numbers of a plane curve from the numerical data of its minimal resolution. In addition, the jumping numbers of the maximal ideal at the singular point in a Du Val or toric surface singularity are computed, and applications to the smooth case are expl…
We investigate some necessary and sufficient conditions for an exceptional divisor to contribute jumping numbers of an effective divisor on a variety of arbitrary dimension, inspired by the results for curves on surfaces by Smith and Thompson and Tucker. In particular, we construct an example of an exceptional divisor that is not contracted in the log canonical model, and does not contribute any jumping numbers.
Suppose $(X, Δ)$ is a log-$\bQ$-Gorenstein pair. Recent work of M. Blickle and the first two authors gives a uniform description of the multiplier ideal $\mJ(X;Δ)$ (in characteristic zero) and the test ideal $τ(X;Δ)$ (in characteristic $p > 0$) via regular alterations. While in general the alteration required depends heavily on $Δ$, for a fixed Cartier divisor $D$ on $X$ it is straightforward to find a single alteration (e.g. a log resolution) computing $\mJ(X; Δ+ λD)$ for all $λ\geq 0$. In this paper, we show the analogous statement in positive characteristic: there exists a single regular al…
We study the structure of $D$-modules over a ring $R$ which is a direct summand of a polynomial or a power series ring $S$ with coefficients over a field. We relate properties of $D$-modules over $R$ to $D$-modules over $S$. We show that the localization $R_f$ and the local cohomology module $H^i_I(R)$ have finite length as $D$-modules over $R$. Furthermore, we show the existence of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial for elements in $R$. In positive characteristic, we use this relation between $D$-modules over $R$ and $S$ to show that the set of $F$-jumping numbers of an ideal $I\subseteq R$ is con…
F-thresholds are defined by Mustata, Takagi and Watanabe in [F-thresholds and Bernstein-Sato polynomials], which are invariants of the pair of ideals on rings of characteristic $p$. In their paper, it is proved F-thresholds equal to jumping numbers for the test ideal on regular local rings. In this note, we give an formula of F-thresholds on toric rings. This formula is a generalization of the example in [Huneke, Mustata, Takagi and Watanabe:F-thresholds, tight closure, integral closure, and multiplicity bounds]. We prove that there exists an inequality between F-jumping coefficients and F-thr…
Let $\mathfrak a \subset \mathscr O_X$ be a coherent ideal sheaf on a normal complex variety $X$, and let $c \ge 0$ be a real number. De Fernex and Hacon associated a multiplier ideal sheaf to the pair $(X, \mathfrak a^c)$ which coincides with the usual notion whenever the canonical divisor $K_X$ is $\mathbb Q$-Cartier. We investigate the properties of the jumping numbers associated to these multiplier ideals. We show that the set of jumping numbers of a pair is unbounded, countable and satisfies a certain periodicity property. We then prove that the jumping numbers form a discrete set of real…
We extend the study of jumping numbers of multiplier ideals due to Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith-Varolin from the algebraic case to the case of general plurisubharmonic functions. While many properties from Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith-Varolin are shown to generalize to the plurisubharmonic case, important properties such as periodicity and discreteness do not hold any more. Previously only two particular examples with a cluster point (i.e. failure of discreteness) of jumping numbers were known, due to Guan-Li and to Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith-Varolin respectively. We generalize them to all toric plurisubharmonic fu…
We study in this paper some local invariants attached via multiplier ideals to an effective divisor or ideal sheaf on a smooth complex variety. First considered (at least implicitly) by Libgober and by Loeser and Vaquie, these jumping coefficients consist of an increasing sequence of rational numbers beginning with the log canonical threshold of the divisor or ideal in question. They encode interesting geometric and algebraic information, and we show that they arise naturally in several different contexts. Given a polynomial f having only isolated singularities, results of Varchenko, Loeser an…
We give an example of a non $\Q$-Gorenstein variety which is canonical but not klt, and whose canonical divisor has an irrational valuation. We also give an example of an irrational jumping number and we prove that there are no accumulation points for the jumping numbers of normal non-$\Q$-Gorenstein varieties with isolated singularities.
We show that the set of cluster points of jumping numbers of a toric plurisubharmonic function in $\mathbf{C}^n$ is discrete for every $n \ge 1$. We also give a precise characterization of the set of those cluster points. These generalize a recent result of D. Kim and H. Seo from $n=2$ to arbitrary dimension. Our method is to analyze the asymptotic behaviors of Newton convex bodies associated to toric plurisubharmonic functions.
In the present article, we establish an equality condition in the restriction formula on jumping numbers by giving a sharp lower bound of the dimension of the support of a related coherent sheaf. As applications, we obtain equality conditions in the restriction formula on complex singularity exponents by giving the dimension, the regularity and the transversality of the support, and we also obtain some sharp equality conditions in the fundamental subadditivity property on complex singularity exponents. We also obtain two sharp relations on jumping numbers.
We introduce real log canonical threshold and real jumping numbers for real algebraic functions. A real jumping number is a root of the $b$-function up to a sign if its difference with the minimal one is less than 1. The real log canonical threshold, which is the minimal real jumping number, coincides up to a sign with the maximal pole of the distribution defined by the complex power of the absolute value of the function. However, this number may be greater than 1 if the codimension of the real zero locus of the function is greater than 1. So it does not necessarily coincide with the maximal r…
This paper is a survey on major results on Hilbert functions of multigraded algebras and mixed multiplicities of ideals, including their applications to the computation of Milnor numbers of complex analytic hypersurfaces with isolated singularity, multiplicities of blowup algebras and mixed volumes of polytopes.
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold, consider a small deformation $ϕ: \mathcal{X} \to B$ of $X$, the dimension of the Dolbeault cohomology groups $H^q(X_t,Ω_{X_t}^p)$ may vary under this defromation. This paper will study such phenomenons by studying the obstructions to deform a class in $H^q(X,Ω_X^p)$ with the parameter $t$ and get the formula for the obstructions.
The main results of this paper interpret mixed volumes of lattice polytopes as mixed multiplicities of ideals and mixed multiplicities of ideals as Samuel's multiplicities. In particular, we can give a purely algebraic proof of Bernstein's theorem which asserts that the number of common zeros of a system of Laurent polynomial equations in the torus is bounded above by the mixed volume of their Newton polytopes.
We interpret Hilbert-Kunz theory of a graded ring of positive characteristic in terms of Frobenius asymptotic of cohomology of vector bundles on projective varieties. With this method we show that for almost all prime numbers there exist three-dimensional quartic hypersurface domains and modules of finite length with irrational Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. From this we deduce that also the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of a local noetherian domain might be an irrational number.
Mustaţă defined Bernstein-Sato polynomials in prime characteristic for principal ideals and proved that the roots of these polynomials are related to the $F$-jumping numbers of the ideal. This approach was later refined by Bitoun. Here we generalize these techniques to develop analogous notions for the case of arbitrary ideals and prove that these have similar connections to $F$-jumping numbers.
The theory of mixed multiplicities of filtrations by $m$-primary ideals in a ring is introduced in a recent paper by Cutkosky, Sarkar and Srinivasan. In this paper, we consider the positivity of mixed multiplicities of filtrations. We show that the mixed multiplicities of filtrations must be nonnegative real numbers and give examples to show that they could be zero or even irrational. When $R$ is analytically irreducible, and $\mathcal I(1),\ldots,\mathcal I(r)$ are filtrations of $R$ by $m_R$-primary ideals, we show that all of the mixed multiplicities $e_R(\mathcal I(1)^{[d_1]},\ldots,\mathc…
We show that each direct summand of the associated graded module of the test module filtration $τ(M, f^λ)_{λ\geq 0}$ admits a natural Cartier structure. If $λ$ is an $F$-jumping number, then this Cartier structure is nilpotent on $τ(M, f^{λ-\varepsilon})/τ(M, f^λ)$ if and only if the denominator of $λ$ is divisible by $p$. We also show that these Cartier structures coincide with certain Cartier structures that are obtained by considering certain $\mathcal{D}$-modules associated to $M$ that were used to construct Bernstein-Sato polynomials. Moreover, we point out that the zeros of the Bernstein…
We study asymptotic jumping numbers for graded sequences of ideals, and show that every such invariant is computed by a suitable real valuation of the function field. We conjecture that every valuation that computes an asymptotic jumping number is necessarily quasi-monomial. This conjecture holds in dimension two. In general, we reduce it to the case of affine space and to graded sequences of valuation ideals. Along the way, we study the structure of a suitable valuation space.
Let R be the local ring of a point on a variety X over an algebraically closed field k. We make a connection between the notion of mixed (Samuel) multiplicity of m-primary ideals in R and intersection theory of subspaces of rational functions on X which deals with the number of solutions of systems of equations. From this we readily deduce several properties of mixed multiplicities. In particular, we prove a (reverse) Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed multiplicities due to Teissier and Rees-Sharp. As an application in convex geometry we obtain a proof of a (reverse) Alexandrov-Fenchel in…
This work concerns finite free complexes with finite length homology over a commutative noetherian local ring $R$. The focus is on complexes that have length $\mathrm{dim}\, R$, which is the smallest possible value, and in particular on free resolutions of modules of finite length and finite projective dimension. Lower bounds are obtained on the Euler characteristic of such short complexes when $R$ is a strict complete intersection, and also on the Dutta multiplicity, when $R$ is the localization at its maximal ideal of a standard graded algebra over a field of positive prime characteristic. T…
We give simple necessary and sufficient conditions on projective schemes over a field k for asymptotic limits of the growth of all graded linear series of a fixed Kodaira-Iitaka dimension to exist. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions on a local ring R of dimension d for the limit \lim_{i\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\ell_R(R/I_n)}{n^d} to exist whenever \{I_n\} is a graded family of m_R-primary ideals. We give a number of applications.
We prove invariance for the number of planar tropical curves enhanced with polynomial multiplicities recently proposed by Florian Block and Lothar Goettsche. This invariance has a number of implications in tropical enumerative geometry.
We fix a counting function of multiplicities of algebraic points in a projective hypersurface over a number field, and take the sum over all algebraic points of bounded height and fixed degree. An upper bound for the sum with respect to this counting function will be given in terms of the degree of the hypersurface, the dimension of the singular locus, the upper bounds of height, and the degree of the field of definition.
We remark the density of the jumping loci of the Picard number of a hyperkähler manifold under small one-dimensional deformation and provide some applications for the Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobian K3 surfaces.
We prove that the weight multiplicities of the integrable irreducible highest weight module over the Kac-Moody algebra associated to a quiver are equal to the root multiplicities of the Kac-Moody algebra associated to some enlarged quiver. To do this, we use the Kac conjecture for indivisible roots and a relation between the Poincare polynomials of quiver varieties and the Kac polynomials, counting the number of absolutely irreducible representations of the quiver over finite fields. As a corollary of this relation, we get an explicit formula for the Poincare polynomials of quiver varieties, w…
If R is a local ring of dimension n, of a smooth complex variety, and if I is a zero dimensional ideal in R, then we prove that e(I)\geq n^n/lc(I)^n. Here e(I) is the Samuel multiplicity along I, and lc(I) is the log canonical threshold of (R,I). We show that equality is achieved if and only if the integral closure of I is a power of the maximal ideal. When I is an arbitrary ideal, but n=2, we give a similar bound involving the Segre numbers of I.
We introduce mixed Segre numbers of ideals which generalize the notion of mixed multiplicities of ideals of finite colength and show how many results on mixed multiplicities can be extended to results on mixed Segre numbers. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of these numbers for two ideals to have the same integral closure. Also, our theory yields a new proof of a generalization of Rees' theorem that links the integral closure of an ideal to its multiplicity. Finally, we give a quick application of our results to Whitney equisingularity.
It is a basic property of the entropy in statistical physics that is concave as a function of energy. The analog of this in representation theory would be the concavity of the logarithm of the multiplicity of an irreducible representation as a function of its highest weight. We discuss various situations where such concavity can be established or reasonably conjectured and consider some implications of this concavity. These are rather informal notes based on a number of talks I gave on the subject, in particular, at the 1997 International Press lectures at UC Irvine.
We consider symmetric (under the action of products of finite symmetric groups) real algebraic varieties and semi-algebraic sets, as well as symmetric complex varieties in affine and projective spaces, defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by a fixed constant $d$. We prove that if a Specht module, $\mathbb{S}^λ$, appears with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the cohomology modules of such sets, then the rank of the partition $λ$ is bounded by $O(d)$. This implies a polynomial (in the dimension of the ambient space) bound on the number of such modules. Furthermore, we …
