The interfacial behavior of quantum materials leads to emergent phenomena such as two dimensional electron gases, quantum phase transitions, and metastable functional phases. Probes for in situ and real time surface sensitive characterization are critical for active monitoring and control of epitaxial synthesis, and hence the atomic-scale engineering of heterostructures and superlattices. Termination switching, especially as an interfacial process in ternary complex oxides, has been studied using a variety of probes, often ex situ; however, direct observation of this phenomena is lacking. To address this need, we establish in situ and real time reflection high energy electron diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy for pulsed laser deposition, which provide structural and compositional information of the surface during film deposition. Using this unique capability, we show, for the first time, the direct observation and control of surface termination in complex oxide heterostructures of SrTiO3 and SrRuO3. Density-functional-theory calculations capture the energetics and stability of the observed structures and elucidate their electronic behavior. This demonstration opens up a novel approach to monitor and control the composition of materials at the atomic scale to enable next-generation heterostructures for control over emergent phenomena, as well as electronics, photonics, and energy applications.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention due to their low-cost fabrication, flexibility, and high-power conversion efficiency. More recent efforts show that the reduction from three- to two-dimensions (2D) of organic-inorganic halide perovskites promises an exciting opportunity to tune their electronic properties. Here, we explore the effect of reduced dimensionality and heterostructure engineering on the intrinsic material properties, such as energy stability, bandgap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites using first-pr…
Polar crystals composed of charged ionic planes cannot exist in nature without acquiring surface changes to balance an ever-growing dipole. The necessary changes can manifest structurally or electronically. An electronic asymetry has long been observed in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system. Electron accumulation is observed near the LaAlO3/TiO2-SrTiO3 interface, while the LaAlO3/SrO-SrTiO3 stack is insulating. Here, we observe evidence for an asymmetry in the surface chemical termination for nominally stoichiometric LaAlO3 films in contact with the two different surface layers of SrTiO3 crystals, TiO2 a…
Polarization induced spin switching of atoms in magnetic materials opens for possibilities to design and develop advanced spintronic devices, in particular, storage devices where the magnetic state can be controlled by an electric field. We employ density-functional theory calculations to study the magnetic properties of a perovskite strontium cobalt oxyfluoride Sr$_2$CoO$_3$F (SCOF) in a hybrid perovskite heterostructure, where SCOF is sandwiched between two ferroelectic BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) layers. Our calculations show that the spin state of the central Co atom in SCOF can be controlled by alter…
Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are d…
We explore the interface properties of perovskite heterostructure CsPbBr$_3$/CsPbI$_3$ through first-principles calculations. The structural interface is formed by the bonding of Cs-Br and Cs-I with bond length of $\sim$4.106 and 3.922 Å. The upshift of Goldsmith tolerance factor in the range $0.8<t<1$ from $t<0.8$ is revealed for the bi-layer interface, from bulk, reflecting the structural rearrangement from anisotropy to isotropy in confinement. The band gap arises mainly due to the energy difference of I-5p orbital than that of Br-4p at the valence band and Pb-6p at the conduction band. Hea…
Understanding and controlling the interfacial magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films are crucial for spintronic device applications. However, using conventional magnetometry, it is difficult to detect them separately from the bulk properties. Here, by utilizing tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a single-barrier heterostructure composed of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO)/ LaAlO3 (LAO)/ Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001), we reveal the presence of a peculiar strong two-fold magnetic anisotropy (MA) along the [110]c direction at the LSMO/LAO interface, which is not observed in bulk LSMO. This MA shows…
We demonstrate fabrication of atomically sharp interfaces between nitride antiperovskite Mn$_{3}$GaN and oxide perovskites (La$_{0.3}$Sr$_{0.7}$)(Al$_{0.65}$Ta$_{0.35}$)O$_{3}$ (LSAT) and SrTiO$_{3}$ as paradigms of nitride-antiperovskite/oxide-perovskite heterostructures. Using a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), atomic-resolution spectroscopic techniques, and first-principle calculations, we investigated the atomic-scale structure, composition, and boding at the interface. We show that the epitaxial growth between the antiperovskite and perovskite compounds is …

Halide Perovskite-Chalcohalide Nanocrystal Heterostructures as a Platform for the Synthesis and Investigation of the CsPbCl3-CsPbI3 Epitaxial Interface
Most recently, orbital-selective quantum well states of $d$ electrons have been experimentally observed in SrVO$_3$ ultrathin films [K. Yoshimatsu et. al., Science 333, 319 (2011)] and SrTiO$_3$ surfaces [A. F. Santander-Syro et. al., Nature 469, 189 (2011)]. Hitherto, one tries to explain these experiments by a nearly free electron (NFE) model, an approach widely used for delocalized electrons in semiconductor heterostructures and simple metal films. We show that a tight binding (TB) model is more suitable for describing heterostructures with more localized $d$ electrons. In this paper, we co…
Halide perovskites have attracted increasing research attention regarding their outstanding optoelectronic applications. Owing to its low activation energy, ion migration is implicated in the long-term stability and many unusual transport behaviors of halide perovskite devices. However, precise control of the ionic transport in halide perovskite crystals remains challenging. Here we visualized and quantified the electric-field-induced halide ion migration in an axial CsPbBr$_3$-CsPbCl$_3$ nanowire heterostructure and demonstrated a solid-state ionic rectification, which is due to the non-unifo…
Intense hard x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser induce irreversible structural damage in a perovskite oxide epitaxial heterostructure when pulse fluences exceed a threshold value. The intensity of x-ray diffraction from a 25-nm thick epitaxial BiFeO$_{3}$ layer on a SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate measured using a series of pulses decreases abruptly with a per-pulse fluence of 2.7 x 10$^{6}$ photons $μ$m$^{-2}$ at 9.7 keV photon energy, but remains constant for 1.3 x 10$^{6}$ photons $μ$m$^{-2}$ or less. The damage resulted in the destruction of the BiFeO$_{3}$ thin film within the focal spot area …
The observation of low energy edge photoluminescence and its beneficial effect on the solar cell efficiency of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites has unleashed an intensive research effort to reveal its origin. This effort, however, has been met with more challenges as the underlying material structure has still not been identified; new modellings and observations also do not seem to converge. Using 2D (BA)2(MA)2Pb3Br10 as an example, we show that 3D MAPbBr3 is formed due to the loss of BA on the edge. This self-formed MAPbBr3 can explain the reported edge emission under various conditions, while t…
We use density functional theory to investigate the possibility of polar and multiferroic states in free-standing, perovskite-based nanodots at their limit of miniaturization: single unit cell with termination to allow centrosymmetry. We consider both A-O and B-O2 terminations for three families of nanodots: i) A=Ba with B=Ti, Zr, and Hf; ii) A=Ca and Sr with B=Ti; and iii) A = Na and K with B=Nb. We find all A-O terminated dots to be non-polar and to exhibit cubic symmetry, regardless of the presence of ferroelectricity in the bulk. These dots all carry a net magnetic moment, except Ca8TiO6. …
Interface effect in complex oxide thin film heterostructures lies at the vanguard of current research to design technologically relevant functionality and explore emergent physical phenomena. While most of the previous works focus on the perovskite/perovskite heterostructures, the study on perovskite/brownmillerite interfaces remain at its infancy. Here, we investigate spontaneously stabilized perovskite-ferromagnet (SrCoO3-δ)/brownmillertite-antiferromagnet (SrCoO2.5) bi-layer with TN > TC and discover an unconventional interfacial magnetic exchange bias effect. From magnetometry investigatio…
Perovskite oxides attract increasing attention due to their broad potential in many applications. Understanding their surfaces is challenging, though, because the ternary composition of the bulk allows for multiple stable surface terminations. We demonstrate a simple procedure for preparing the bulk-terminated (001) surface of SrTiO3, a prototypical cubic perovskite. Controlled application of strain on a SrTiO3 single crystal results in a flat cleavage with micrometer-size domains of SrO and TiO2. Distribution of these two terminations is dictated by ferroelectric domains induced by strain dur…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnets have broad application prospects in the spintronics, but how to effectively control them with a small electric field is still an issue. Here we propose that 2D magnets can be efficiently controlled in a multiferroic heterostructure composed of 2D magnetic material and perovskite oxide ferroelectric (POF) whose dielectric polarization is easily flipped under a small electric field. We illustrate the feasibility of such strategy in the bilayer CrI3/BiFeO3(001) heterostructure by using the first-principles calculations. Different from the traditional POF multiferroic …
We report charge-transfer up to a single electron per interfacial unit cell across non-polar heterointerfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the charge transfer insulator LaCoO3. In high-quality bi- and tri-layer systems grown using pulsed laser deposition, soft X-ray absorption, dichroism and STEM-EELS are used to probe the cobalt 3d-electron count and provide an element-specific investigation of the magnetic properties. The experiments prove a deterministically-tunable charge transfer process acting in the LaCoO3 within three unit cells of the heterointerface, able to generate full conver…
We provide insights into the influence of surface termination on the oxygen vacancy incorporation for the perovskite model material SrTiO3 during annealing in reducing gas environments. We present a novel approach to control to tailor the oxygen vacancy formation by controlling the termination. We prove that a SrO-termination can inhibit the incorporation of oxygen vacancies across the (100)-surface and apply this to control their incorporation during thin film growth. Utilizing the conducting interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, we could tailor the oxygen-vacancy based conductivity contributi…
We demonstrate efficient intrinsic spin-to-charge current conversion in a two-dimensional electron gas using an all-epitaxial single-crystal heterostructure of LaSrMnO3/ LaAlO3 (LAO)/ SrTiO3 (STO), which can suppress spin scattering and give us an ideal environment to investigate intrinsic spin-charge conversion. With decreasing temperature to 20 K, the spin-to-charge conversion efficiency is drastically enhanced to +3.9 nm, which is the largest positive value ever reported for LAO/STO. Our band-structure calculation well reproduces this behavior and predicts further enhancement by controlling…
We studied strain-induced polarization and resulting conductivity in the nonpolar/nonpolar CaZrO3/SrTiO3 (CZO/STO) heterostructure (HS) system by means of first-principles electronic structure calculations. By modeling four types of CZO/STO HS-based slab systems, i.e., TiO2/CaO and SrO/ZrO2 interface models with CaO and ZrO2 surface terminations in each model separately, we found that the lattice-mismatch-induced compressive strain leads to a strong polarization in the CZO film, and as the CZO film thickness increases, there exist an insulator-to-metal transition. The polarization direction an…
With recent trends on miniaturizing oxide-based devices, the need for atomic-scale control of surface/interface structures by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has increased. In particular, realizing uniform atomic termination at the surface/interface is highly desirable. However, a lack of understanding on the surface formation mechanism in PLD has limited a deliberate control of surface/interface atomic stacking sequences. Here, taking the prototypical SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 (SRO/BTO/SRO) heterostructure as a model system, we investigated the formation of different interfacial termination sequence…
In this paper, we report the electrical and structural properties of the oxide-based metal/ferroelectric/metal (MFM) junctions. The heterostructures are composed of ultrathin layers of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) as a metallic layer and, BaTiO3 (BTO) as a ferroelectric layer. Junction based devices, having the dimensions of 400 x 200 micom2, have been fabricated upon LCMO/BTO/LCMO heterostructures by photolithography and Ar-ion milling technique. The DC current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the MFM junctions were carried out. At 300 K, the devices showed the linear (I-V) characteristics, whereas …
We present the results of first-principles calculations on two possible terminations of the (001) surfaces of SrTiO3 (STO), BaTiO3 (BTO), and PbTiO3 (PTO) perovskite crystals. Atomic structure and the electronic configurations were calculated for different 2D slabs, both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric, using hybrid (B3PW) exchange-correlation technique and reoptimized basis sets of atomic (Gaussian) orbitals. Results are compared with previous calculations and available experimental data. The electronic density distribution near the surface and covalency effects are discussed in details…
By using first-principles approach, the interaction of CO${_2}$ with (001) surfaces of six cubic ABO${_3}$ perovskites (A = Ba, Sr and B = Ti, Zr, Hf) is studied in detail. We show that CO${_2}$ adsorption results in the formation of highly stable CO${_3}$-like complexes with similar geometries for all investigated compounds. This reaction leads to the suppression of the surfaces states, opening the band gaps of the slab systems up to the corresponding bulk energy limits. For most AO-terminated ABO${_3}$(001) perovskite surfaces, a CO${_2}$ coverage of 0.25 was found to be sufficient to fully …
Oxide electronics relies on the availability of epitaxial oxide thin films. The extreme flexibility of the chemical composition of ABO3 perovskites and the broad spectrum of properties they cover, inspire the creativity of scientists and place perovskites in the lead of functional materials for advanced technologies. Moreover, emerging properties are being discovered at interfaces between distinct perovskites that could not be anticipated on the basis of those of the adjacent epitaxial layers. All dreamed new prospects require the use of suitable substrates for epitaxial growth. Perovskite sin…

We report the existence of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the (001) surface of CaTiO3. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find a hybridization between the d_xz and d_yz orbitals, not observed in the 2DESs at the surfaces of other ATiO3 perovskites, e.g. SrTiO3 or BaTiO3. Based on a comparison of the 2DES properties in these three materials, we show how the electronic structure of the 2DES (bandwidth, orbital order and electron density) is coupled to different typical lattice distortions in perovskites. The orbital hybridization in orthorhombic CaTiO3 results from …
Many of the recent advancements in oxide heterostructures have been attributed to modification of spin, charge, lattice, and orbital order parameters at atomically well-defined interfaces. However, the details on the structural, chemical, and electrostatic evolution of interfaces comprised of materials with different crystallographic symmetries remain to be understood. In this work, we have mapped out the interfacial connectivity of atoms of two dissimilar materials, the perovskite SrTiO3 and the brownmillerite SrCoO2.5, using high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and geome…

Due to the photo-instability and hysteresis of TiO$_2$ electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), novel electron transport materials are highly demanded. Here, we show ideal band alignment between La-doped BaSnO$_3$ (LBSO) and methyl ammonium (MA) lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI$_3$). The CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$/La$_x$Ba$_{(1-x)}$SnO$_3$ interface forms a stable all-perovskite heterostructure. The selective band alignment is manipulated with band gap renormalization by La-doping on the Ba site. LBSO shows high mobility, photo-stability, and structural stability, promising the n…
The atomic-scale synthesis of artificial oxide heterostructures offers new opportunities to create novel states that do not occur in nature. The main challenge related to synthesizing these structures is obtaining atomically sharp interfaces with designed termination sequences. Here, we demonstrate that the oxygen pressure (PO2) during growth plays an important role in controlling the interfacial terminations of SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 (SRO/BTO/SRO) ferroelectric capacitors. The SRO/BTO/SRO heterostructures were grown by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The top SRO/BTO interface grown at…
Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices have gained significant attention due to their remarkable performance and low processing cost, particularly for solar cells. However, for perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs), non-radiative charge carrier recombination has limited electroluminescence (EL) efficiency. Here we demonstrate perovskite-polymer bulk heterostructure LEDs exhibiting record-high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 20%, and an EL half-life of 46 hours under continuous operation. This performance is achieved with an emissive layer comprising quasi-2D and 3D perovskite…
The discovery of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interfaces of perovskite oxides such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has motivated enormous efforts in engineering interfacial functionalities with this type of oxide heterostructures. However, its fundamental origins are still not understood, e.g. the microscopic mechanisms of coexisting interface conductivity and magnetism. Here we report a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the depth profile of 2DES-relevant Ti 3d interface carriers using depth- and element-specific techniques, standing-wave excited photoemission and resonant i…
The oxide heterostructure [(YFeO$_3$)$_5$(LaFeO$_3$)$_5$]$_{40}$, which is magnetically ordered and piezoelectric at room temperature, has been constructed from two weak ferromagnetic AFeO$_3$ perovskites with different A cations using RHEED-monitored pulsed laser deposition. The polarisation arises through the removal of inversion centres present within the individual AFeO$_3$ components. This symmetry reduction is a result of combining ordering on the A site, imposed by the periodicity of the grown structure, with appropriate orientations of the octahedral tilting characteristic of the perov…
The energetics and the electronic structure of methylammonium lead bromine (CH3NH3PbBr3) perovskite (001) surfaces are studied based on density functional theory. By examining the surface grand potential, we predict that the CH3NH3Br-terminated (001) surface is energetically more favorable than the PbBr2-terminated (001) surface, under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions of bulk CH3NH3PbBr3. The electronic structure of each of these two different surface terminations retains some of the characteristics of the bulk, while new surface states are found near band edges which may affect the photov…
