We establish weak-strong uniqueness and stability properties of renormalised solutions to a class of energy-reaction-diffusion systems. The systems considered are motivated by thermodynamically consistent models, and their formal entropy structure allows us to use as a key tool a suitably adjusted relative entropy method. The weak-strong uniqueness principle holds for dissipative renormalised solutions, which in addition to the renormalised formulation obey suitable dissipation inequalities consistent with previous existence results. We treat general entropy-dissipating reactions without growth restrictions, and certain models with a non-integrable diffusive flux. The results also apply to a class of (isoenergetic) reaction-cross-diffusion systems.
In this paper, we consider the inverse reaction coefficient problems (IRCPs) for nonlocal diffusion equation and multi-term time-fractional nonlocal diffusion equation from the average nonlocal flux data in external reaction region. Based on the nonlocal maximum principle we established, the uniqueness theorem for IRCPs are proved.
We establish the uniqueness of semi-wavefront solution for a non-local delayed reaction-diffusion equation. This result is obtained by using a generalization of the Diekman-Kaper theory for a nonlinear convolution equation. Several applications to the systems of non-local reaction-diffusion equations with distributed time delay are also considered.
We prove a global existence, uniqueness and regularity result for a two-species reaction-diffusion volume-surface system that includes nonlinear bulk diffusion and nonlinear (weak) cross diffusion on the active surface. A key feature is a proof of upper $L^{\infty}$-bounds that exploits the entropic gradient structure of the system.
We prove pathwise uniqueness for an abstract stochastic reaction-diffusion equation in Banach spaces. The drift contains a bounded Hölder term; in spite of this, due to the space-time white noise it is possible to prove pathwise uniqueness. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of the associated Kolmogorov equation. The model includes examples not covered by the previous works based on Hilbert spaces or concrete SPDEs.
The paper deals with reaction-diffusion equations involving a hysteretic discontinuity in the source term, which is defined at each spatial point. Such problems describe biological processes and chemical reactions in which diffusive and nondiffusive substances interact according to hysteresis law. Under the assumption that the initial data are spatially transverse, we prove a theorem on the uniqueness of solutions. The theorem covers the case of non-Lipschitz hysteresis branches arising in the theory of slow-fast systems.
In this paper, we provide a mathematical framework in studying the wave propagation with the annihilation phenomenon in excitable media. We deal with the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a one-dimensional free boundary problem (called a reaction--interface system) arising from the singular limit of a FitzHugh--Nagumo type reaction--diffusion system. Because of the presence of the annihilation, interfaces may intersect each other. We introduce the notion of weak solutions to study the continuation of solutions beyond the annihilation time. Under suitable conditions, we show that the fre…
We prove existence, uniqueness, and stability of transition fronts (generalized traveling waves) for reaction-diffusion equations in cylindrical domains with general inhomogeneous ignition reactions. We also show uniform convergence of solutions with exponentially decaying initial data to time translates of the front. In the case of stationary ergodic reactions the fronts are proved to propagate with a deterministic positive speed. Our results extend to reaction-advection-diffusion equations with periodic advection and diffusion.
We establish a weak-strong uniqueness principle for solutions to entropy-dissipating reaction-diffusion equations: As long as a strong solution to the reaction-diffusion equation exists, any weak solution and even any renormalized solution must coincide with this strong solution. Our assumptions on the reaction rates are just the entropy condition and local Lipschitz continuity; in particular, we do not impose any growth restrictions on the reaction rates. Therefore, our result applies to any single reversible reaction with mass-action kinetics as well as to systems of reversible reactions wit…
The weak-strong uniqueness for solutions to reaction-cross-diffusion systems in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is proved. The system generalizes the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto population model to an arbitrary number of species. The diffusion matrix is neither symmetric nor positive definite, but the system possesses a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. No growth conditions on the source terms are imposed. It is shown that any renormalized solution coincides with a strong solution with the same initial data, as long as the strong solution exists. The proof is based o…
In this paper, we prove a uniqueness result in the inverse problem of determining several non-constant coefficients of one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations. Such reaction-diffusion equations include the classical model of Kolmogorov, Petrovsky and Piskunov as well as more sophisticated models from biology. When the reaction term contains an unknown polynomial part of degree $N,$ with non-constant coefficients $μ_k(x),$ our result gives a sufficient condition for the uniqueness of the determination of this polynomial part. This sufficient condition only involves pointwise measurements o…
In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
We study the question of uniqueness of weak solution to the fast reaction limit of the Keller and Rubinow model for Liesegang rings as introduced by Hilhorst et al. (J. Stat. Phys. 135, 2009, pp. 107-132). The model is characterized by a discontinuous reaction term which can be seen as an instance of spatially distributed non-ideal relay hysteresis. In general, uniqueness of solutions for such models is conditional on certain transversality conditions. For the model studied here, we give an explicit description of the precipitation boundary which gives rise to two scenarios for non-uniqueness,…
In this paper we establish the uniqueness of a solution to a stationary convection-diffusion equation in divergence form with an exponentially summable generalized divergence-free drift.
This article proves the uniqueness for two kinds of inverse problems of identifying fractional orders in diffusion equations with multiple time-fractional derivatives by pointwise observation. By means of eigenfunction expansion and Laplace transform, we reduce the uniqueness for our inverse problems to the uniqueness of expansions of some special function and complete the proof.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for diffusion equations with multiple fractional time derivatives. We prove the uniqueness in determining a number of fractional time-derivative terms, the orders of the derivatives and spatially varying coefficients.
We consider a scalar parabolic equation in one spatial dimension. The equation is constituted by a convective term, a reaction term with one or two equilibria, and a positive diffusivity which can however vanish. We prove the existence and several properties of traveling-wave solutions to such an equation. In particular, we provide a sharp estimate for the minimal speed of the profiles and improve previous results about the regularity of wavefronts. Moreover, we show the existence of an infinite number of semi-wavefronts with the same speed.
In this paper, we study the time-fractional diffusion equation on a metric star graph. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are investigated and the proof is based on eigenfunction expansions. Some priori estimates and regularity results of the solution are proved.
Existence and uniqueness of radially symmetric self-similar very singular solutions are proved for the singular diffusion equation with gradient absorption {equation*} \partial_t u -Δ_{p}u+|\nabla u|^q=0, \ \hbox{in} \ (0,\infty)\times\real^N, {equation*} where $2N/(N+1)
This article deals with the uniqueness in identifying multiple parameters simultaneously in the one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion-wave equation of fractional time-derivative order $\in (0,2)$ with the zero Robin boundary condition. Using the Laplace transform and a transformation formula, we prove the uniqueness in determining an order of the fractional derivative, a spatially varying potential, initial values and Robin coefficients simultaneously by boundary measurement data, provided that all the eigenmodes of an initial value do not vanish. Furthermore, for another formulation of in…

We consider positive travelling fronts of the time-delayed reaction-diffusion equation with the monostable birth function. Our main result says that for every fixed and sufficiently large velocity c, the positive travelling front is unique (modulo translations). To prove the uniqueness, we introduce a small parameter 1/c and realize the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction in a scale of Banach spaces.
An inverse problem to determine a space-dependent factor in a semilinear time-fractional diffusion equation is considered. Additional data are given in the form of an integral with the Borel measure over the time. Uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem is studied. The method uses a positivity principle of the corresponding differential equation that is also proved in the paper.
This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of determining the spatially dependent source in a time fractional diffusion-wave equation, with the aid of extra measurement data at subboundary. Uniqueness result is obtained by using the analyticity and the new established unique continuation principle provided that the coefficients are all temporally independent. We also derive a Lipschitz stability of our inverse source problem under a suitable topology whose norm is given via the adjoint system of the fractional diffusion-wave equation.
Bounded weak solutions to a particular class of degenerate parabolic cross-diffusion systems are shown to coincide with the unique strong solution determined by the same initial condition on the maximal existence interval of the latter. The proof relies on an estimate established for a relative entropy associated to the system.
This paper is concerned with an age-structured model in population dynamics. We investigate the uniqueness of solution for this type of nonlinear reaction-diffusion problem when the source term depends on the density, indicating the presence of, for example, mortality and reaction processes. Our result shows that in a spatial environment, if two population densities obey the same evolution equation and possess the same terminal data of time and age, then their distributions must coincide therein.
In this work, we study the mathematical analysis of a coupled system of two reaction-diffusion-advection equations and Danckwerts boundary conditions, which models the interaction between a microbial population (e.g., bacterias) and a diluted substrate (e.g., nitrate) in a continuous flow bioreactor. This type of bioreactor can be used, for instance, for water treatment. First, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solution, under the hypothesis of linear reaction by using classical results for linear parabolic boundary value problems. Next, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solution…
The uniqueness of bounded weak solutions to strongly coupled parabolic equations in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is shown. The equations include cross-diffusion and drift terms and are coupled selfconsistently to the Poisson equation. The model class contains special cases of the Maxwell-Stefan equations for gas mixtures, generalized Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto equations for population dynamics, and volume-filling models for ion transport. The uniqueness proof is based on a combination of the $H^{-1}$ technique and the entropy method of Gajewski.
We consider a nonlocal aggregation equation with degenerate diffusion, which describes the mean-field limit of interacting particles driven by nonlocal interactions and localized repulsion. When the interaction potential is attractive, it is previously known that all steady states must be radially decreasing up to a translation, but uniqueness (for a given mass) within the radial class was open, except for some special interaction potentials. For general attractive potentials, we show that the uniqueness/non-uniqueness criteria are determined by the power of the degenerate diffusion, with the …
We consider the Cauchy problems of a non-strictly hyperbolic system which describes the compressible Euler fluid with exothermic reaction. In this paper a Lyapunov-type functional is constructed for balance laws. By analysis of the flow generated by front tracking method, we prove the well-posedness theorems and present the local features of global solutions.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the steady state convection diffusion equation. We prove that a velocity field $V$, is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, when $V \in C^{0,γ} (Ω)$, $2/3< γ\leq 1$, i.e. when $V$ is a Hölder continuous vector field with $2/3< γ\leq 1$.
We establish the uniqueness and regularity of weak (and very weak) solutions to a class of cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. No boundedness assumption on these solutions is supposed here as known techniques for scalar equations such as maximum/comparison principles are generally unavailable for systems. Furthermore, for planar domains we show that unbounded weak solutions satisfying mild integrability conditions are in fact smooth.
Let $n\ge 3$ and $0<m<\frac{n-2}{n}$. We will extend the results of J.L. Vazquez and M. Winkler and prove the uniqueness of finite points blow-up solutions of the fast diffusion equation $u_t=Δu^m$ in both bounded domains and $\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,\infty)$. We will also construct initial data such that the corresponding solution of the fast diffusion equation in bounded domain oscillate between infinity and some positive constant as $t\to\infty$.
We consider a class of cross diffusion systems with degenerate (or porous media type) diffusion which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology with zero self diffusions. Known techniques for scalar equations are no longer available here as maximum/comparison principles are generally unavailable for systems. However, we will provide the existence of weak solutions to the degenerate systems under mild integrability conditions of strong solutions to nondegenerate systems and show that they converge to a weak solution of the degerate system. These conditions will be verified for the m…
We study an initial-boundary value problem of variable-order time-fractional diffusion equations in one space dimension. Based on the wellposedness of the proposed model and the smoothing properties of its solutions, which are shown to be determined by the behavior of the variable order at the initial time, a uniqueness result for an important inverse problem of determination of the variable order in the time-fractional derivative contained in the proposed model from observations of its solutions is obtained.
This paper studies the existence and uniqueness of local weak solutions to the d-dimensional tropical climate model without thermal diffusion. We establish that, when $α=β\geq1$, $η=0$, any initial data $(u_{0},v_{0})\in B_{2,1}^{1+\frac{d}{2}-2α}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and $θ_{0}\in B_{2,1}^{1+\frac{d}{2}-α}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ yields a unique weak solution.
We consider fractional diffusion-wave equations with source term which is represented in a form of a product of a temporal function and a spatial function. We prove the uniqueness for inveres source problem of determining spatially varying factor by decay of data as the time tends to $\infty$, provided that the source does not work during the observations. Our main result asserts the uniqueness if data decay more rapidly than $\left(\frac{1}{t^p}\right)$ with any $p\in \N$ as $t\to\infty$. Date taken not from the initial time are realistic but the uniqueness was not known in general. The proof…
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with a convection term in one space variable, where the diffusion changes sign from the positive to the negative and the reaction term is bistable. We study the existence of wavefront solutions, their uniqueness and regularity. The presence of convection reveals several new features of wavefronts: according to the mutual positions of the diffusivity and reaction, profiles can occur either for a single value of the speed or for a bounded interval of such values; uniqueness (up to shifts) is lost; moreover, plateaus of arbitrary length can appear; profil…
In this paper, we present an approach to characterising fast-reaction limits of systems with nonlinear diffusion, when there are either two reaction-diffusion equations, or one reaction-diffusion equation and one ordinary differential equation, on unbounded domains. Here, we replace the terms of the form uxx in usual reaction-diffusion equation, which represent linear diffusion, by terms of form phi(u)xx, representing nonlinear diffusion. We prove the convergence as k tends to infinity to a limit that is determined by the unique solution of a certain scalar nonlinear diffusion limit problem.
This paper contains two main contributions. First, it provides optimal stability estimates for advection-diffusion equations in a setting in which the velocity field is Sobolev regular in the spatial variable. This estimate is formulated with the help of Kantorovich--Rubinstein distances with logarithmic cost functions. Second, the stability estimates are extended to the advection-diffusion equations with velocity fields whose gradients are singular integrals of $L^1$ functions entailing a new well-posedness result.
Uniqueness of simultaneous reconstruction of general space- and time-dependent sources and initial states in fractional diffusion equations and systems from single boundary measurements
In this paper we investigate the long-time behavior of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations of the type $du = (Au + f(u))dt + σ(u) dW(t)$, where $A$ is an elliptic operator, $f$ and $σ$ are nonlinear maps and $W$ is an infinite dimensional nuclear Wiener process. The emphasis is on unbounded domains. Under the assumption that the nonlinear function $f$ possesses certain dissipative properties, this equation is known to have a solution with an expectation value which is uniformly bounded in time. Together with some compactness property, the existence of such a solution implies the existence …
This work contributes to an understanding of the domain size's effect on the existence and uniqueness of the linear convection--diffusion equation with integral-type boundary conditions, where boundary conditions depend non-locally on unknown solutions. Generally, the uniqueness result of this type of equation is unclear. In this preliminary study, a uniqueness result is verified when the domain is sufficiently large or small. The main approach has an advantage of transforming the integral boundary conditions into new Dirichlet boundary conditions so that we can obtain refined estimates, and t…
This paper concerns with existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of the solutions for a nonlocal coupled system of reaction-diffusion. We prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions by the Faedo-Galerkin method and exponential decay of solutions by the classic energy method. We improve the results obtained by Chipot-Lovato and Menezes for coupled systems. A numerical scheme is presented.
We consider a generalization of the inverse problem of the electrocardiography in the framework of the theory of elliptic and parabolic differential operators. More precisely, starting with the standard bidomain mathematical model related to the problem of the reconstruction of the transmembrane potential in the myocardium from known body surface potentials we formulate a more general transmission problem for elliptic and parabolic equations in the Sobolev type spaces and describe conditions, providing uniqueness theorems for its solutions. Next, the new transmission problem is interpreted in …
In this paper, we discuss the uniqueness for solution to time-fractional diffusion equation $\partial_t^α(u-u_0) + Au=0$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, where an elliptic operator $-A$ is not necessarily symmetric. We prove that the solution is identically zero if its normal derivative with respect to the operator $A$ vanishes on an arbitrary small part of the spatial domain over a time interval. The proof is based on the Laplace transform and the spectral decomposition, and is valid for more general time-fractional partial differential equations, including those involving n…
