We consider whether the new horizon-first law works in higher-dimensional $f(R)$ theory. We firstly obtain the general formulas to calculate the entropy and the energy of a general spherically-symmetric black hole in $D$-dimensional $f(R)$ theory. For applications, we compute the entropies and the energies of some black hokes in some interesting higher-dimensional $f(R)$ theories.
In this review we summarize, expand, and set in context recent developments on the thermodynamics of black holes in extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure and treated as a thermodynamic variable in its own right. We specifically consider the thermodynamics of higher-dimensional rotating asymptotically flat and AdS black holes and black rings in a canonical (fixed angular momentum) ensemble. We plot the associated thermodynamic potential-the Gibbs free energy-and study its behaviour to uncover possible thermodynamic phase transitions in th…
When the cosmological constant, $Λ$, is interpreted as a thermodynamic variable in the study of black hole thermodynamics a very rich structure emerges. It is natural to interpret $Λ$ as a pressure and define the thermodynamically conjugate variable to be the thermodynamic volume of the black hole (which need not bear any relation to the geometric volume). Recent progress in this new direction for black hole thermodynamics is reviewed.
I give a fairly systematic and thorough presentation of the case for regarding black holes as thermodynamic systems in the fullest sense, aimed at students and non-specialists and not presuming advanced knowledge of quantum gravity. I pay particular attention to (i) the availability in classical black hole thermodynamics of a well-defined notion of adiabatic intervention; (ii) the power of the membrane paradigm to make black hole thermodynamics precise and to extend it to local-equilibrium contexts; (iii) the central role of Hawking radiation in permitting black holes to be in thermal contact …
In this work we study thermodynamics of 2+1-dimensional static black holes with a nonlinear electric field. Besides employing the standard thermodynamic approach, we investigate the black hole thermodynamics by studying its thermodynamic geometry. We compute the Weinhold and Ruppeiner metrics and compare the thermodynamic geometry with the standard description on the black hole thermodynamics. We further consider the cosmological constant as an additional extensive thermodynamic variable. In the thermodynamic equilibrium three dimensional space, we compute the efficiency of the heat engine and…
In this work we research on the thermodynamical properties of the Bardeen black holes. We compute the series of new thermodynamic quantities such as local temperature, heat capacity, off-shell free energy of this kind of black hole in detail. We further analyze the thermodynamical characteristics of the Bardeen black hole by varying its charge $q$ to check the existence and stability of the black hole.
The thermodynamics and phase transitions of charged RN-AdS and rotating Kerr-AdS black holes in a generalized Randall-Sundrum braneworld are investigated in the framework of thermodynamic geometry. A detailed analysis of the thermodynamics, stability and phase structures in the canonical and the grand canonical ensembles for these AdS braneworld black holes are described. The thermodynamic curvatures for both these AdS braneworld black holes are computed and studied as a function of the thermodynamic variables. Through this analysis we illustrate an interesting dependence of the phase structur…
In this paper, we consider a static black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We recapitulate the expression for corrected thermodynamic entropy of this black hole due to small fluctuations around equilibrium. Also, we study the geometrothermodynamics (GTD) of this black hole and investigate the adaptability of the curvature scalar of geothermodynamic methods with phase transition points of this black hole. Moreover, we study the effect of correction parameter on thermodynamic behaviour of this black hole. We observe that the singular point of the curvature scalar of Ruppeiner metric coincides completely …
Due to the asymptotic structure of the black hole solution, there are two different thermodynamic schemes for the charged Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. In one scheme, the charged BTZ black hole is super-entropic, while in the other, it is not (the reverse isoperimetric inequality is saturated). In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamic curvature of the charged BTZ black hole in different coordinate spaces. We find that in both schemes, the thermodynamic curvature is always positive, which may be related to the information of repulsive interaction between black hole molecul…
In black hole thermodynamics of certain models, the thermodynamic first law may contain the pressure term. The corresponding entropy follows the area law whereas the thermodynamic energy is not the same with the black hole mass. If the pressure can be decomposed into two parts and recombined with the original thermodynamic quantities, then the thermodynamic energy becomes the black hole mass and the entropy satisfying the area law turns out to be the corrected entropy called the Wald entropy, respectively.
Recently we have shown [1604.08812] how to formulate a thermodynamic first law for a single (charged) accelerated black hole in AdS space by fixing the conical deficit angles present in the spacetime. Here we show how to generalise this result, formulating thermodynamics for black holes with varying conical deficits. We derive a new potential for the varying tension defects: the "thermodynamic length", both for accelerating and static black holes. We discuss possible physical processes in which the tension of a string ending on a black hole might vary, and also map out the thermodynamic phase …
We investigate the thermodynamics of the Einstein-non linear-Maxwell-Yukawa black hole solution in de-Sitter spacetime. After presenting the black hole solution and its horizons, we use different thermodynamics points of view to probe the phase structure of such a black hole, ranging from local, global thermodynamics to the effective thermodynamics formalism with two horizons. Our analysis shows that the black hole can undergo a thermal phase transition between an unstable phase and stable phase. These results are consolidated by our proposal of generalizing effective thermodynamics to three h…
The thermodynamic geometry has been proved to be quite useful in understanding the microscopic structure of black holes. We investigate the phase structure, thermodynamic geometry and critical behavior of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole and a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in a cavity, which can reach equilibrium in a canonical ensemble. Although the phase structure and critical behavior of both cases show striking resemblance, we find that there exist significant differences between the thermodynamic geometry of these two cases. Our results imply that there may be a connection between the …
In this paper, a preliminary correspondence between the thermodynamic curvature and the isoperimetric theorem is established from a $4$-dimensional ultraspinning black hole. We find that the thermodynamic curvature of ultraspinning black hole is negative which means the ultraspinning black hole is likely to present an attractive between its molecules phenomenologically if we accept the analogical observation that the thermodynamic curvature reflects the interaction between molecules in a black hole system. Meanwhile we obtain a general conclusion that the thermodynamic curvature of the extreme…
Thermodynamic relations for a class of 2D black holes are obtained corresponding to observations made from finite spatial distances. We also study the thermodynamics of the charged version of the Jackiw-Teitelboim black holes found recently by Lowe and Strominger. Our results corroborate, in appropriate limits, to those obtained previously by other methods. We also analyze the stability of these black holes thermodynamically.
Due to the non-independence of entropy and thermodynamic volume for spherically symmetric black holes in the AdS spacetime, when applying the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry theory to these black holes, we often encounter an unavoidable problem of the singularity about the line element of thermodynamic geometry. In this paper, we propose a basic and natural scheme for dealing with the thermodynamic geometry of spherically symmetric AdS black holes. We point out that enthalpy, not internal energy, is the fundamental thermodynamic characteristic function for the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry…
We study thermodynamic and classical instability of AdS black holes in fourth-order gravity. These include the BTZ black hole in new massive gravity, Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, and higher-dimensional AdS black holes in fourth-order gravity. All thermodynamic quantities which are computed using the Abbot-Deser-Tekin method are used to study thermodynamic instability of AdS black holes. On the other hand, we investigate the $s$-mode Gregory-Laflamme instability of the massive graviton propagating around the AdS black holes. We establish the connection between the thermodynamic instability and…
We consider the stability of black holes within both classical general relativity and the semiclassical thermodynamic description. In particular, we study linearised perturbations and their contribution to the gravitational partition function, addressing technical issues for charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) and rotating (Kerr-AdS) black holes. Exploring the connection between classical and thermodynamic stability, we find classical instabilities of Myers-Perry black holes and bifurcations to new black hole families.
We review the present status of black hole thermodynamics. Our review includes discussion of classical black hole thermodynamics, Hawking radiation from black holes, the generalized second law, and the issue of entropy bounds. A brief survey also is given of approaches to the calculation of black hole entropy. We conclude with a discussion of some unresolved open issues.
In the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states we introduce a Legendre invariant metric which contains all the information about the thermodynamics of black holes. The curvature of this thermodynamic metric becomes singular at those points where, according to the analysis of the heat capacities, phase transitions occur. This result is valid for the Kerr-Newman black hole and all its special cases and, therefore, provides a unified description of black hole phase transitions in terms of curvature singularities.
We explore the thermodynamics of a general class of two dimensional dilatonic black-holes. A simple prescription is given that allows us to compute the mass, entropy and thermodynamic potentials, with results in agreement with those obtained by other methods, when available.
We relate various black hole solutions in the near-horizon region to black hole solutions in two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories in order to argue that thermodynamics of black holes in D>=4 can be effectively described by thermodynamics of black holes in two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropies of single-charged dilatonic black holes and dilatonic p-branes with an arbitrary dilaton coupling parameter in arbitrary spacetime dimensions are exactly reproduced by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the two-dimensional black hole in the associated t…
We work on the relation between the local thermodynamic instability and the dynamical instability of large black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space proposed by Gubser and Mitra. We find that all perturbations suppressing the metric fluctuations at linear order become dynamically unstable when black holes lose the local thermodynamic stability. We discuss how dynamical instabilities can be explained by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
We address a long-standing problem of describing the thermodynamics of a charged accelerating black hole. We derive a standard first law of black hole thermodynamics, with the usual identification of entropy proportional to the area of the event horizon -- even though the event horizon contains a conical singularity. This result not only extends the applicability of black hole thermodynamics to realms previously not anticipated, it also opens a possibility for studying novel properties of an important class of exact radiative solutions of Einstein equations describing accelerated objects. We d…
In this article, we present a study on thermodynamics of a class of regular black holes. Such a class includes Bardeen and Hayward regular black holes. We obtained thermodynamic quantities like the Hawking temperature, entropy, and heat capacity for the entire class. As part of an effort to indicate some physical observable to distinguish regular black holes from singular black holes, we suggest that regular black holes are colder than singular black holes. Besides, contrary to the Schwarzschild black hole, that class of regular black holes may be thermodynamically stable. From a generalized u…
It was confirmed that the negative modes of the Euclidean section for asymptotically flat black holes reveal the thermodynamic instability of these black holes in the grand canonical ensemble (GCE). These include Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. In this work, we develop the relation between thermodynamic instability in the GCE and tachyonic instability for asymptotically flat black holes, where the latter is the onset for obtaining black holes with scalar hair. This implies that the tachyonic instability of black holes when introducing scalar coupling to th…
We present a formalism for studying the thermodynamics of black holes in dilaton gravity. The thermodynamic variables are defined on a quasilocal surface surrounding the black hole system and are obtained from a general class of Lagrangians involving a dilaton. The formalism thus accommodates a large number of possible theories and black hole spacetimes. Many of the thermodynamic quantities are identified from the contribution of the action on the quasilocal boundary. The entropy is found using path integral techniques, and a first law of thermodynamics is obtained. As an illustration, we calc…
The physical version and equilibrium state version of the first law of thermodynamics for a black object consisting of n-dimensional charged stationary axisymmetric black hole surrounded by $a$ black rings, the so-called black Saturn was derived. The general setting for our derivation is n-dimensional dilaton gravity with p + 1 strength form fields.
We extend the derivation of the Hawking temperature of a Schwarzschild black hole via the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter black holes is obtained from the generalized uncertainty principle of string theory and non-commutative geometry. This may explain why the thermodynamics of (anti-)de Sitter-like black holes admits a holographic description in terms of a dual quantum conformal field theory, whereas the thermodynamics of Schwarzschild-like black holes does not.
The relationship between thermodynamics and the Lloyd bound on the holographic complexity for a black hole has been of interest. We consider $D$ dimensional anti-de Sitter black holes with hyperbolic geometry as well as black holes with momentum relaxation that have a minimum for temperature and mass. We show that the singular points of the thermodynamic curvature of the black holes, as thermodynamic systems, correspond to the zero points of the action and volume complexity at the Lloyd bound. For such black holes with a single horizon, the complexity of volume and the complexity of action at …
In the present paper we study the long-standing problem for the thermodynamics of magnetized dilaton black holes. For this purpose we construct an exact solution describing a rotating charged dilaton black hole immersed in an external magnetic field and discuss its basic properties. We derive a Smarr-like relation and the thermodynamics first law for these magnetized black holes. The novelty in the thermodynamics of the magnetized black holes is the appearance of new terms proportional to the magnetic momentum of the black holes in the Smarr-like relation and the first law.
We have shown the thermodynamic changes in a 2+1-dimensional rotating black hole when it absorbs a particle. The microscopic changes which the black hole undergoes are interpreted using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Using particle absorption phenomena, we formulate an irreducible mass and black hole entropy directly related to the particle momenta. We describe the black hole evolution that preserves the 2nd law of thermodynamics. The numbers of microstates which evaluate the entropy are analyzed at each of the black hole evolution stages.
We study the thermodynamic properties of the RN-AdS black hole in full phase space and propose a generalized thermodynamic identity. As an example, we use it to find relations of thermodynamical coefficients between the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. We also show, for the first order phase transition, that the usual Maxwell's equal area law should be extended to a new form for the RN-AdS black hole.
Thermodynamics of extended gravity static spherically symmetric black hole solutions is investigated. The energy issue is discussed making use of the derivation of Clausius relation from equations of motion, evaluating the black hole entropy by the Wald method and computing the related Hawking temperature.
The first law of black hole thermodynamics can be read off from the field equations at the horizon. Until now, for black holes with multiple horizons the field equations only at the outer horizon were employed with a particular constraint. In this paper, however, we suggest that for a black hole with multiple horizons the field equations at the inner horizon as well as the outer horizon should be needed in order to obtain the first law of black hole thermodynamics in general.
Previously the five dimensional $S^1$-rotating black rings have been superposed in a concentric way by some solitonic methods, and regular systems of two $S^1$-rotating black rings were constructed by the authors and then Evslin and Krishnan (we called these solutions "black di-rings"). In this place we show some characteristics of the solutions of five dimensional black di-rings, especially in thermodynamic equilibrium. After the summary of the di-ring expressions and their physical quantities, first we comment on the equivalence of the two different solution sets of the black di-rings. Then …
In this paper, we visit the thermodynamic criticality and thermodynamic curvature of the charged AdS black hole in a new phase space. It is shown that when the square of the total charge of the charged black hole is considered as a thermodynamic quantity, the charged AdS black hole also admits an van der Waals-type critical behavior without the help of thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. Based on this, we study the fine phase structures of the charged AdS black hole with fixed AdS background in the new framework. On the one hand, we give the phase diagram structures of the charged…
A new formalism for thermodynamics of AdS black holes called the {\em restricted phase space thermodynamics} (RPST) is proposed. The construction is based on top of Visser's holographic thermodynamics, but with the AdS radius fixed as a constant. Thus the RPST is free of the $(P,V)$ variables but inherits the central charge and chemical potential as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables. In this formalism, the Euler relation and the Gibbs-Duhem equation hold simultaneously with the first law of black hole thermodynamics, which guarantee the appropriate homogeneous behaviors for the b…
Using the fact that theories of gravity with asymptotically three-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries have dual descriptions as two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), we present the first study in field theory of the thermodynamic volume of various black hole solutions. We explain in general two-dimensional CFT terms why the presence of a thermodynamic volume can render certain black hole solutions "super-entropic". Super-entropicity simply results from the fact that the Cardy formula, which gives the gravitational Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, can over-count the CFT entropy. The exa…
In this paper, we show the relation between the thermodynamic geometry of a four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS (RN-AdS) black hole and non-local observables in boundary field theory. Instead of introducing the critical point associating with the black hole charge to nondimensionalize the thermodynamics parameters, we use the cosmological constant to rescale these variables, so that a universal specific equation of state of the black hole is obtained. Further, the correspondence between thermodynamic properties of the black hole and the oscillating behaviors of the non-local observables ha…
Although we know that black holes are characterized by a temperature and an entropy, we do not yet have a satisfactory microscopic ``statistical mechanical'' explanation for black hole thermodynamics. I describe a new approach that attributes the thermodynamic properties to ``would-be gauge'' degrees of freedom that become dynamical on the horizon. For the (2+1)-dimensional black hole, this approach gives the correct entropy. (Talk given at the Pacific Conference on Gravitation and Cosmology, Seoul, February 1996.)
The two-dimensional theory of Teitelboim and Jackiw has constant and negative curvature. In spite of this, the theory admits a black hole solution with no singularities. In this work we study the thermodynamics of this black hole using York's formalism.
We have shown that changes occur in a (2+1)-dimensional charged black hole by adding a charged probe. The particle increases the entropy of the black hole and guarantees the second law of thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics is derived from the change in the black hole mass. Using the particle absorption, we test the extremal black hole and find out that the mass of the extremal black hole increases more than the electric charge. Therefore, the outer horizon of the black hole still exists. However, the extremal condition becomes non-extremal.
We find the connection between thermodynamic quantities and quasinormal frequencies in Lifshitz black holes. It is shown that the globally stable Lifshitz black holes have pure imaginary quasinormal frequencies. We also show that by employing the Maggiore's method, both the horizon area and the entropy can be quantized for these black holes.
In this paper, we consider a charged rotating AdS black holes in four dimensions and study the effects of leading-order thermal corrections on the thermodynamics of such system explicitly. The first-order corrected thermodynamical quantities also satisfy the first-law of thermodynamics of the black holes. The holographic duality between the charged rotating AdS black holes and Van der Waals fluid is also emphasized through the $P-v$ diagram. Finally, we study the effects of the leading-order thermal corrections on the stability of the charged rotating black holes.
We study thermodynamic properties of Myers-Perry black holes by deriving explicit fundamental relations from which we can obtain the temperature and specific heat in terms of explicit control parameters in arbitrary dimensions. Using the definition of extremal black holes we establish the generalized Kerr bound in arbitrary dimension. We study thermodynamic geometries of the Myers-Perry black holes with equal angular momenta in arbitrary dimensions and draw thermodynamic cone diagrams which capture the extremal limits of the black holes. Thermodynamic state space is represented geometrically a…
We investigate the thermodynamics and stability of the horizons in warped anti-de Sitter black holes of the new massive gravity under the scattering of a massive scalar field. Under scattering, conserved quantities can be transferred from the scalar field to the black hole, which change the state of the black hole. We determine that the changes in the black hole are well coincident with the laws of thermodynamics. In particular, the Hawking temperature of the black hole cannot be zero in the process as per the third law of thermodynamics. Furthermore, the black hole cannot be overspun beyond t…
We investigate black hole thermodynamics involving a scalar hair which is dual to a momentum relaxation of the dual field theory. This black hole geometry is able to be classified by two parameters. One is a momentum relaxation and the other is a mass density of another matter localized at the center. Even though all parameters are continuous, there exists a specific point where its thermodynamic interpretation is not continuously connected to the one defined in the other parameter regime. The similar feature also appears in a topological AdS black hole. In this work, we show why such an unusu…
We discuss the thermodynamics of an array of collinear black holes which may be accelerating. We prove a general First Law, including variations in the tensions of strings linking and accelerating the black holes. We analyse the implications of the First Law in a number of instructive cases, including that of the C-metric, and relate our findings to the previously obtained thermodynamics of slowly accelerating black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime. The concept of thermodynamic length is found to be robust and a Christoudoulou-Ruffini formula for the C-metric is shown.
All thermodynamic quantities of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be obtained from the dilaton and its potential of two dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. The dual relations of four thermodynamic laws are also established. Furthermore, the near-horizon thermodynamics of the extremal RN black hole is completely described by the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory which is obtained by perturbing around the AdS$_2$-horizon.
We present recent results on the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) on spacetime manifolds with boundaries. As an application, novel quantum gravity corrections to the thermodynamics of black holes are discussed.
In this paper, we consider the rotating charged Gödel black hole and study the effect of the higher order corrections of the entropy on the thermodynamics and statistics quantities of the Kerr-Newman-Gödel black hole. The leading order correction is logarithmic while higher-order terms are proportional to the inverse of the area of the black hole. We obtain modified thermodynamics and statistics and find that correction terms are important in the stability of the black hole.
In this paper, we obtain topological black hole solutions of third order Lovelock gravity couple with two classes of Born-Infeld type nonlinear electrodynamics with anti-de Sitter asymptotic structure. We investigate geometric and thermodynamics properties of the solutions and obtain conserved quantities of the black holes. We examine the first law of thermodynamics and find that the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the black hole solutions satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we calculate the heat capacity and determinant of Hessian matrix to evaluate thermal stability i…
Recently, black hole thermodynamics and phase transition have been studied in the extended phase space. Besides the VdW-like phase transition, more interesting phase transitions were found. More interestingly, combining with the thermodynamic geometry, the microstructure of black holes was investigated. In this paper, we give a brief review of recent progress on this subject.
