In the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states we introduce a Legendre invariant metric which contains all the information about the thermodynamics of black holes. The curvature of this thermodynamic metric becomes singular at those points where, according to the analysis of the heat capacities, phase transitions occur. This result is valid for the Kerr-Newman black hole and all its special cases and, therefore, provides a unified description of black hole phase transitions in terms of curvature singularities.
The seminal works of Bekenstein and Hawking have revealed that black holes have a well-defined thermodynamic description. In particular, it is often stated in the physical literature that black holes, like mundane physical systems, obey the first law of thermodynamics: $ΔS=ΔE/T_{\text{BH}}$, where $T_{\text{BH}}$ is the Bekenstein-Hawking temperature of the black hole. In the present work we test the regime of validity of the thermodynamic description of gravity. In particular, we provide compelling evidence that, due to quantum effects, the first law of thermodynamics breaks down in the low-t…
Using the fact that theories of gravity with asymptotically three-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries have dual descriptions as two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), we present the first study in field theory of the thermodynamic volume of various black hole solutions. We explain in general two-dimensional CFT terms why the presence of a thermodynamic volume can render certain black hole solutions "super-entropic". Super-entropicity simply results from the fact that the Cardy formula, which gives the gravitational Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, can over-count the CFT entropy. The exa…
The Friedmann equation in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker(FRW) universe with any spatial curvature is derived from the first law of thermodynamics on the event horizon. The key idea is to redefine a Hawking temperature on the event horizon. Furthermore, we obtain the evolution equations of the universe including the quantum correction and explore the evolution of the universe in the $f(R)$ gravity. In addition, we also investigate the generalized second law of thermodynamics in Einstein gravity and the $f(R)$ gravity. This perspective also implies that the first law of thermodynamics on the eve…
The thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole is reformulated within the context of the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD). Different choices of the metric in the equilibrium states manifold are used in order to reproduce the Hawking-Page phase transition as a divergence of the thermodynamical curvature scalar. We show that the enthalpy and total energy representations of GTD does not reproduce the transition while the entropy rep- resentation gives the expected behavior.
We study thermodynamical structure of Einstein black holes in the presence of power Maxwell invariant nonlinear electrodynamics for two different cases. The behavior of the temperature and conditions regarding the stability of these black holes are investigated. Since the language of geometry is an effective method in general relativity, we concentrate on the geometrical thermodynamics to build a phase space for studying phase transition. In addition, taking into account the denominator of the heat capacity, we use the proportionality between cosmological constant and thermodynamical pressure …
Inspired by applications of gravity's rainbow in UV completion of general relativity, we investigate charged topological black holes in gravity's rainbow and show that depending on the values of different parameters, these solutions may encounter with black hole solutions with two horizons, extreme black hole (one horizon) or naked singularity (without horizon). First, we obtain black hole solutions, calculate thermodynamical quantities of the system and check the first law of thermodynamics. Then, we study the thermodynamical behavior of the system including thermal stability and phase transi…
In theories of gravity where the cosmological constant defines a thermodynamic variable, the pressure, it has been shown that solutions of Einstein's equations have a corresponding thermodynamic volume. In general, the expression for the volume is not the same as the one arising from naive geometrical considerations. Both rotation and nut charge are properties known in the literature to give non-geometric thermodynamic volumes, and so we combine the two in a single example and compute the volume for the Kerr-bolt-AdS spacetime, presenting a new expression that generalizes the previously known …
Motivated by the energy representation of Riemannian metric, in this paper we study different approaches toward the geometrical concept of black hole thermodynamics. We investigate thermodynamical Ricci scalar of Weinhold, Ruppeiner and Quevedo metrics and show that their number and location of divergences do not coincide with phase transition points arisen from heat capacity. Next, we introduce a new metric to solve these problems. We show that the denominator of the Ricci scalar of the new metric contains terms which coincide with different types of phase transitions. We elaborate the effect…
In this paper, we take into account black hole solutions of Brans-Dicke-Maxwell theory and investigate their stability and phase transition points. We apply the concept of geometry in thermodynamics to obtain phase transition points and compare its results with those, calculated in canonical ensemble through heat capacity. We show that these black holes enjoy second order phase transitions. We also show that there is a lower bound for the horizon radius of physical charged black holes in Brans-Dicke theory which is originated from restrictions of positivity of temperature. In addition, we find…
In this article, we consider a conventional black hole under f(R) gravity. Due to the small fluctuations around the equilibrium state, we have summarized the expression of the modified thermodynamic entropy of this black hole. At the same time, we also studied the geometric thermodynamics (GTD) of black holes, and studied the adaptability of the curvature scalar of the geometric thermodynamics method to the phase transition point of the black hole. In addition, we also studied the influence of the modified parameters on the thermodynamic behavior of black holes.
Recently, Verlinde conjectured that gravity may be an entropic force, arising from thermodynamics on the holographic screen. We investigate the implications of the entropic force formalism for inflationary cosmology. We find the background dynamics of inflation can be dually described in the holographic language. At the perturbation level, two kinds of novel scale invariant scalar fluctuations arise from thermal fluctuations on the holographic screen. These fluctuations can be responsible for CMB anisotropy and structure formation.
Recently a short scale modified black hole metric, known as holographic metric, has been proposed in order to capture the self-complete character of gravity. In this paper we show that such a metric can reproduce some geometric features expected from the quantum $N$-portrait beyond the semi-classical limit. We show that for a generic $N$ this corresponds to having an effective energy momentum tensor in Einstein equations or, equivalently, non-local terms in the gravity action. We also consider the higher dimensional extension of the metric and the case of an AdS cosmological term. We provide a…
We examine the thermodynamical properties of a number of asymptotically flat, stationary (but not static) solutions having conical singularities, with both connected and non-connected event horizons, using the thermodynamical description recently proposed in arXiv:0912.3386 [gr-qc]. The examples considered are the double-Kerr solution, the black ring rotating in either S^2 or S^1 and the black Saturn, where the balance condition is not imposed for the latter two solutions. We show that not only the Bekenstein-Hawking area law is recovered from the thermodynamical description but also the therm…
The fact that a temperature and an entropy may be associated with horizons in semi-classical general relativity has led many to suspect that spacetime has microstructure. If this is indeed the case then its description via Riemannian geometry must be regarded as an effective theory of the aggregate behavior of some more fundamental degrees of freedom that remain unknown, in many ways similar to the treatment of fluid dynamics via the Navier-Stokes equations. This led us to ask how a geometric structure may naturally arise in thermodynamics or statistical mechanics and what evolution may mean i…
In this paper, the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics and entropy is revisited in the context of cosmological models in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the boundary of the universe is assumed to be enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon. The model is best fitted with the observational data for distance modulus. The best fitted geometric and thermodynamic parameters such as equation of state parameter, deceleration parameter and entropy are derived. To link between thermodynamic and geometric parameters, the "entropy rate of change multiplied by the temperature" as a model independent…
We study the properties of the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in (2+1)-gravity. We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to introduce in the space of equilibrium states a $2-$dimensional thermodynamic metric whose curvature is non-vanishing, indicating the presence of thermodynamic interaction, and free of singularities, indicating the absence of phase transitions. Similar results are obtained for generalizations of the BTZ black hole which include a Chern-Simons term and a dilatonic field. Small logarithmic corrections of the…
This research is aimed at the revision of the thermodynamic concepts and their relationship with the General Relativity Theory (GRT) and how physical systems are affected when gravity is included in their thermodynamic description. We found that in the case of light, the entropy in an extreme stage is proportional to the area. This is due to a reduction of freedom degrees of the system, since gravity imposes constraint on the number of microstates which are accessible to the system and this is consistent with the holographic principle.
Properties pertaining to thermodynamical local stability of Reissner-Nordström black holes surrounded by quintessence as well as adiabatic invariance, adiabatic charging and a generalized Smarr formula are discussed. Limits for the entropy, temperature and electric potential ensuring stability of canonical ensembles are determined by the classical thermodynamical and Poincaré methods. By the latter approach we show that microcanonical ensembles (isolated black holes) are stable. Two geometrical approaches lead to determine the same states corresponding to second order phase transitions.
In this summary, we present the main topics of the talks presented in the parallel session "Black holes - 5" of the 14th Marcel Grossmann Meeting held in Rome, Italy in July 2015. We first present a short review of the main approaches used to understand thermodynamics by using differential geometry. Then, we present a brief summary of each presentation, including some general remarks and comments.
The thermodynamics of the Kerr-AdS black hole is reformulated within the context of the formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD) and the cosmological constant is considered as a new thermodynamical parameter. We conclude that the mass of the black hole corresponds to the total enthalpy of this system. Choosing appropriately the metric in the equilibrium states manifold, we study the phase transitions as a divergence of the thermodynamical curvature scalar. This approach reproduces the Hawking-Page transition and shows that considering the cosmological constant as a thermodynamical parameter d…
In this work, we obtain the thermodynamic geometry of the extended black hole solution under f(R) gravity. This is the foundation of our work. We also obtain the exact form of the f(R) model for some solutions. In the thermodynamic analysis, we calculate the thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and entropy of these solutions and compare them with the corresponding BTZ black holes. After that, we study the Ruppeiner geometry, such as the f(R)-gravity (extended black hole solution) of the BTZ black hole, and analyze the thermodynamic comparison of the Ruppeiner geometry with the van der …
With the objective to generalize previous results found for a handful of explicit solutions, we study the extended thermodynamics of a black brane with minimally coupled scalar hair in D-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Using Komar integration and the Hamiltonian formalism to calculate the conserved charges, we obtain a Smarr relation that is applicable to a wide variety of solutions and suggests a more general definition of the thermodynamic volume. This volume is found to be proportional to the geometric volume, and a simple prescription is given to calculate the constan…
Considering a nonlinear charged black hole as a thermodynamics system, we study the geometric description of its phase transitions. Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics we show that the geometry of the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states of this kind of black holes is related with information about thermodynamic interaction, critical points and phase transitions structure. Our results indicate that the equilibrium manifold of this black hole is curved and that curvature singularities appear exactly at those places where first and second order phase transitions occur.
Thermodynamic length is a metric distance between equilibrium thermodynamic states that asymptotically bounds the dissipation induced by a finite time transformation of a thermodynamic system. By means of thermodynamic length, we first evaluate the departures from ideal to real gases in geometric thermodynamics with and without Legendre invariance. In particular, we investigate ideal and real gases in the Ruppeiner and geometrothermodynamic formalisms. Afterwards, we formulate a strategy to relate thermodynamic lengths to efficiency of thermodynamic systems in both the aforementioned framework…
In this work, we obtained the black hole solutions in the expansion f(R)-gravitation (R is not regarded as a constant here), and studied their thermodynamics, especially the phase transition and criticality in anti-de Sitter Behavior (AdS) expands the phase space. We obtained accurate Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) corresponding solutions in dilaton f(R)-gravity, which is the basis of our work. We also obtained the exact form of the f(R) model for some solutions. In thermodynamic analysis, we calculate thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and entropy of these solutions and compa…
In order to study the phase transition through thermodynamic geometry, we consider the charged AdS black hole with global monopole. We first introduce thermodynamics of charged AdS black hole with global monopole by discussing the dependence of Hawking temperature, specific heat and P-v curve on horizon radius and monopole parameter. By implementing various thermodynamic geometry methods, for instance, Weinhold, Ruppiner, Quevedo and HPEM formulations, we derive corresponding scalar curvatures for charged AdS black hole with a global monopole. Here, we observe that, in contrast to Weinhold and…
A proposal for the gravitational energy-momentum tensor, known in the literature as the square root of Bel-Robinson tensor, is analyzed in detail. Being constructed exclusively from the Weyl part of the Riemann tensor, such tensor encapsulates the geometric properties of free gravitational fields in terms of optical scalars of null congruences: making use of the general decomposition of any energymomentum tensor, we explore the thermodynamic interpretation of such geometric quantities. While the matter energy-momentum is identically conserved due to Einstein's field equations, the SQBR is not …
We investigate the geometric properties of the equilibrium manifold of a thermodynamic system determined by the van der Waals equations of state. We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to obtain results that are invariant under Legendre transformations, i. e., independent of the choice of thermodynamic potential. It is shown that the equilibrium manifold is curved with curvature singularities situated at those points where first order phase transitions occur. Moreover, the geodesic equations in the equilibrium manifold are investigated numerically to illustrate the equivalence between …
We investigate the general geometric properties of the surface of infinite red-shift corresponding to the event horizon of the static and axisymmetric solution of the Einstein vacuum equations that only possesses mass $M$ and quadrupole moment $Q$. The deformation of the Schwarzschild surface $r=2M$ produced by the quadrupole moment is shown, and the range of values of this multipole moment is specified, which preserves a regular, closed, continuous and differentiable surface. Some thermodynamic consequences and speculations ensuing from our results are discussed.
We study the thermodynamics and the different thermodynamic geometric methods of Reissener-Nordström-de Sitter black hole and its extremal case, which is similar to the de Sitter black hole coupled to a scalar field, rather called an MTZ black hole. While studying the thermodynamics of the systems, we could find some abnormalities. In both cases, the thermodynamic geometric methods could give the correct explanation for the all abnormal thermodynamic behaviors in the system.
In this paper we show that the vanishing of the scalar curvature of Ruppeiner-like metrics does not characterize the ideal gas. Furthermore, we claim through an example that flatness is not a sufficient condition to establish the absence of interactions in the underlying microscopic model of a thermodynamic system, which poses a limitation on the usefulness of Ruppeiner's metric and conjecture. Finally, we address the problem of the choice of coordinates in black hole thermodynamics. We propose an alternative energy representation for Kerr-Newman black holes that mimics fully Weinhold's approa…
We construct a new class of asymptotically (a)dS black hole solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills massive gravity in the presence of Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. The obtained solutions possess a Coulomb electric charge, massive term and a non-abelian hair as well. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities, and investigate the validity of the first law of thermodynamics. Also, we investigate thermal stability conditions by using the sign of heat capacity through canonical ensemble. Next, we consider the cosmological constant as a thermodynamical pressure and study the van der…
We study geometric relativistic flow and Ricci soliton equations which (for respective nonholonomic constraints and self-similarity conditions) are equivalent to the gravitational field equations of $R^2$ gravity and/or to the Einstein equations with scalar field in general relativity, GR. Perelman's functionals are generalized for modified gravity theories, MGTs, which allows to formulate an analogous statistical thermodynamics for geometric flows and Ricci solitons. There are constructed and analyzed generic off-diagonal black ellipsoid, black hole and solitonic exact solutions in MGTs and G…
In this paper, at first, we focus on a FRW universe in which the dark energy candidate satisfies the Polytropic equation of state and study thermodynamics of dark energy. Bearing the thermal fluctuation theorem in mind, we establish a relation between the thermal fluctuation of system and mutual interaction between the dark energy and dark matter. Generalization to a viscous Polytropic gas is also investigated. We point to a condition for decaying dark energy candidate into the dark matter needed for alleviating coincidence problem. The effects of dark energy candidates and their interactions …
We discuss head-on collisions of neutron stars and disks of dust ("galaxies") following the ideas of equilibrium thermodynamics, which compares equilibrium states and avoids the description of the dynamical transition processes between them. As an always present damping mechanism, gravitational emission results in final equilibrium states after the collision. In this paper we calculate selected final configurations from initial data of colliding stars and disks by making use of conservation laws and solving the Einstein equations. Comparing initial and final states, we can decide for which ini…

We describe the evolution of the early and late universe from thermodynamic considerations, using the generalized non-extensive Tsallis entropy with a variable exponent. A new element in our analysis is the inclusion of a bulk viscosity in the description of the cosmic fluid. Using the generalized Friedmann equation, a description of the early and the late universe is obtained.

We investigate the interaction between dark energy and dark matter in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics of open systems with matter creation/annihilation. We consider dark energy and dark matter as an interacting two component (scalar field and "ordinary" dark matter) cosmological fluid in a homogeneous spatially flat and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) Universe. The thermodynamics of open systems as applied together with the gravitational field equations to the two component cosmological fluid leads to a generalization of the elementary dark energy-dark mater interaction…
