We reconsider the problem of calculating the vacuum free energy (density) of QCD and the shift of the quark condensates in the presence of a uniform background magnetic field using two-and-three-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). Using the free energy, we calculate the degenerate, light quark condensates in the two-flavor case and the up, down and strange quark condensates in the three-flavor case. We also use the vacuum free energy to calculate the (renormalized) magnetization of the QCD vacuum, which shows that it is paramagnetic. We find that the three-flavor light-quark condensates and (renormalized) magnetization are improvements on the two-flavor results. We also find that the average light quark condensate is in agreement with the lattice up to $eB=0.2 {\rm\ GeV^{2}}$, and the (renormalized) magnetization is in agreement up to $eB=0.3 {\rm\ GeV^{2}}$, while three-flavor $χ$PT, which gives a non-zero shift in the difference between the light quark condensates unlike two-flavor $χ$PT, underestimates the difference compared to lattice QCD.
We study the spatial inhomogeneity of the Polyakov loop induced by inhomogeneous chiral condensates. We formulate an effective model of gluons on the background fields of chiral condensates, and perform its lattice simulation. On the background of inhomogeneous chiral condensates, the Polyakov loop exhibits an in-phase spatial oscillation with the chiral condensates. We also analyze the heavy quark potential and show that the inhomogeneous Polyakov loop indicates the inhomogeneous confinement of heavy quarks.
We present two-loop results for the quark condensate in an external magnetic field within chiral perturbation theory using coordinate space techniques. At finite temperature, we explore the impact of the magnetic field on the pion-pion interaction in the quark condensate for arbitrary pion masses and derive the correct weak magnetic field expansion in the chiral limit. At zero temperature, we provide the complete two-loop representation for the vacuum energy density and the quark condensate.
Using the recently proposed generalization to an arbitrary number of colors of the strong coupling approach to lattice gauge theories\cite{Grignani:2003uv}, we compute the chiral condensate of massless QCD in the 't Hooft limit.
We compute the low lying spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator in the deconfined phase of finite-temperature quenched gauge theory. It suggests the existence of a chiral condensate which we confirm with a direct stochastic estimate. We show that the part of the spectrum responsible for the chiral condensate can be understood as arising from a dilute gas of instantons and anti-instantons.
The chiral magnetization properties of cold and hot vacua are studied using quenched simulations in lattice Yang-Mills theory. In weak external magnetic fields the magnetization is proportional to the first power of the magnetic field. We evaluate numerically the coefficient of the proportionality (the chiral susceptibility) using near-zero eigenmodes of overlap fermions. We found that the product of the chiral susceptibility and the chiral condensate equals to 46(3) MeV. This value is very close to the phenomenological value of 50 MeV. In strong fields the magnetization is a nonlinear functio…
We discuss spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and quark bilinear condensate in large $N_c$ QCD. It has been known that the existence of $η'$ meson is implied in large $N_c$ QCD as pointed out by Witten and Veneziano. First, we show that the existence of $η'$ and Ward-Takahashi identities imply the existence of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons from chiral symmetry breaking $SU(N_f)_L \times SU(N_f)_R \to SU(N_f)_V$. Second, we show that a QCD inequality implies a nonzero lower bound on the quark bilinear condensate.
We investigate the effect of a non-zero magnetic field on the chiral condensate using a holographic QCD approach. We extend the model proposed by Iatrakis, Kiritsis and Paredes in arXiv:1010.1364 that realises chiral symmetry breaking dynamically from 5d tachyon condensation. We calculate the chiral condensate, magnetisation and susceptibilities for the confined and deconfined phases. The model leads, in the probe approximation, to magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in both confined and deconfined phases. In the chiral limit, $m_q=0$, we find that in the deconfined phase a sufficie…
We investigate inhomogeneous chiral condensates, such as the so-called dual chiral density wave of dense quark matter, under an external magnetic field at finite real and imaginary chemical potentials. In a model-independent manner, we find that analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential is not possible due to the singularity induced by inhomogeneous chiral condensates at zero chemical potential. From the discussion on the non-analyticity and methods used in lattice QCD simulations, e.g., Taylor expansion, and the analytic continuation with an imaginary chemical potential,…
We study spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in SU(3) QCD in terms of the dual superconductor picture for quark confinement in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge, using lattice QCD Monte Carlo simulations with four different lattices of $16^4$, $24^4$, $24^3\times 6$ at $β=6.0$ (i.e., the spacing $a \simeq$ 0.1 fm), and $32^4$ at $β=6.2$ (i.e., $a \simeq$ 0.075 fm), at the quenched level. First, in the confinement phase, we find Abelian dominance and monopole dominance in the MA gauge for the chiral condensate in the chiral limit, using the two different methods of i) the Banks-Casher relation w…
Chiral monopoles are hedgehoglike structures in local chiral condensates in QCD. These monopoles are (i) made of quark and gluon fields; (ii) explicitly gauge-invariant; and (iii) they carry quantized and conserved chromomagnetic charge. We argue that the chiral condensate vanishes in a core of the chiral monopole while the density of these monopoles increases with temperature wiping out the quark condensate in quark-gluon plasma. We suggest that the dynamics of the chiral monopoles is responsible for the chiral symmetry restoration in high temperature phase of QCD. We also argue that the chir…
The temperature evolution of the chiral condensates in a gas made of pions, kaons and etas is studied within the framework of SU(2) and SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory. We describe the temperature dependence of the quark condensates by using the meson meson scattering phase shifts in a second order virial expansion. We find that the SU(3) formalism yields an extrapolated melting temperature for the non-strange condensates which is lower by about 20-30 MeV than within SU(2). In addition our results show that the strange condensate melting is slower than that of the non-strange, due to the diff…
By exploiting the chiral symmetry, we derive analytic formulas for the massless and the massive Ginsparg-Wilson fermion propagators. Using these formulas, we derive an expression for the chiral condensate which is the order parameter for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. These formulas provide the proper way to compute the fermion propagators and may save a significant amount of computing time especially for large lattices in four dimensions.
Using the lattice gauge field theory, we study the relation among the local chiral condensate, monopoles, and color magnetic fields in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). First, we investigate idealized Abelian gauge systems of 1) a static monopole-antimonopole pair and 2) a magnetic flux without monopoles, on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In these systems, we calculate the local chiral condensate on quasi-massless fermions coupled to the Abelian gauge field, and find that the chiral condensate is localized in the vicinity of the magnetic field. Second, using SU(3) lattice QCD Monte Carlo ca…
We apply the probability distribution function method to the study of chiral properties of QCD with quarks in the exact massless limit. A relation among the chiral condensate, zeros of the Bessel function and eigenvalue of Dirac operator is also given. The chiral condensate in this limit can be measured with small number of eigenvalues of the massless Dirac operator and without any ambiguous mass extrapolation. Results for SU(3) gauge theory with quenched Kogut-Susskind quarks on the $10^4$ lattice are shown.
We analyze the chiral symmetries of flavored quantum chromodynamics in two dimensions and show the existence of chiral condensates within the path-integral approach. The massless and massive cases are discussed as well, for arbitrary finite and infinite number of colors. Our results put forward the question of topological issues when matter is in the fundamental representation of the gauge group.
The vortical susceptibility of chiral condensate is derived in two ways. First we obtain this using the spectrum of the Dirac operator in a metric of a curved space-time, which corresponds to rotation. Second we come to the expression for the susceptibility via the holographic approach to QCD.
Chiral condensates in the trivial light-cone vacuum emerge if defined as short-time limits of fermion propagators. In gauge theories, the necessary inclusion of a gauge string in combination with the characteristic light-cone infrared singularities contain the relevant non-perturbative ingredients responsible for formation of the condensate, as demonstrated for the 't Hooft model.
We discuss the description of baryon as the dyonic instanton in holographic QCD. The solution generalizes the Skyrmion taking into account the infinite tower of vector and axial mesons as well as the chiral condensate. We construct the solution with unit baryon charge and study the dependence of its mass on the chiral condensate. The elegant explanation of the Ioffe's formula has been found and we speculate on the relation between physical scales of the chiral and conformal symmetry breaking.
While chiral symmetry breaking in the QCD vacuum is attributed to nonzero chiral condensate, an alternative symmetry breaking pattern with no chiral condensate is also possible, as pointed out by Stern. This hypothetical phase was excluded in QCD at zero density long time ago, but nothing forbids it at finite baryon density. In this work, we study the $θ$ dependence of this unorthodox phase on the basis of chiral perturbation theory. Physical observables such as energy density, topological susceptibility, non-local chiral order parameter and meson masses are computed analytically in the epsilo…
Recently, the Columbia group obtained the valence quark mass dependence of the chiral condensate for lattice QCD simulations with dynamical fermions for a series of couplings close to the critical temperature. In this letter we show that the data for temperatures below $T_c$ and sufficiently small valence quark masses can be rescaled to fall on a universal curve. Using chiral random matrix theory we obtain an exact analytical expression for the shape of this curve. We also discuss the universal scaling behavior of the mass dependence of the mass derivatives of the chiral condensate (scalar sus…
We analyze the thermodynamical properties, at finite density and nonzero temperature, of the (1+1)-dimensional chiral Gross-Neveu model (the NJL_2 model), using the exact inhomogeneous (crystalline) condensate solutions to the gap equation. The continuous chiral symmetry of the model plays a crucial role, and the thermodynamics leads to a broken phase with a periodic spiral condensate, the "chiral spiral", as a thermodynamically preferred limit of the more general "twisted kink crystal" solution of the gap equation. This situation should be contrasted with the Gross-Neveu model, which has a di…
In this paper, we consider two-flavor QCD at zero temperature and finite isospin chemical potential ($μ_I$) using a model-independent analysis within chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. We calculate the effective potential, the chiral condensate and the pion condensate in the pion-condensed phase at both zero and nonzero pionic source. We compare our finite pionic source results for the chiral condensate and the pion condensate with recent (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD results and find that they are in excellent agreement.
We determine several quantities in quenched lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry. For 100 gauge configurations generated with Wilson gauge action at $ β= 6.0 $ on the $ 16^3 \times 32 $ lattice, we compute quenched quark propagators for 13 bare quark masses. The pion decay constant is extracted from the pion propagator, and from which the inverse lattice spacing is determined to be $ a^{-1} = 1.979(6) $ GeV. The parameters ($ C, δ, B $) in the pseudoscalar meson mass formula in quenched chiral perturbation theory (q$χ$PT) to one-loop order are determined. Further, we measure the index (topol…
We consider the effective $1+1$-dimensional chiral theory describing fluctuations of the order parameter of the Disoriented Chiral Condensate (DCC) which can be formed in the central rapidity region in a relativistic nucleus-nucleus or nucleon-nucleon collisions at high energy. Using $1+1$-dimensional reduction of QCD at high energies and assuming spin polarization of DDC one can find the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) model at level $k=3$ as the effective chiral theory for the one-dimensional DDC. Some possible phenomenological consequences are briefly discussed.
We calculate the chiral condensate of QCD with 2, 2+1 and 3 flavors of sea quarks. Lattice QCD simulations are performed employing dynamical overlap fermions with up and down quark masses covering a range between 3 and 100 MeV. On L ~ 1.8-1.9 fm lattices at a lattice spacing ~ 0.11 fm, we calculate the eigenvalue spectrum of the overlap-Dirac operator. By matching the lattice data with the analytical prediction from chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-leading order, the chiral condensate in the massless limit of up and down quarks is determined.
With two degenerate quarks, the chiral condensate exhibits a jump as the quark masses pass through zero. I discuss how this single transition splits into two Ising like transitions when the quarks are made non-degenerate. The order parameter is the expectation of the neutral pion field. The transitions represent long distance coherent phenomena occuring without the Dirac operator having vanishingly small eigenvalues.
We study the quark-gluon mixed condensate g<\bar{q} σG q> using the SU(3)c lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind fermion at the quenched level. We perform the first but accurate measurement of the thermal effects on the mixed condensate in lattice QCD at β= 6.0 with 16^3 * Nt (Nt=16,12,10,8,6,4), β= 6.1 with 20^3 * Nt (Nt=20,12,10,8,6), and β= 6.2 with 24^3 * Nt (Nt=24,16,12,10,8). At each temperature, the lattice calculation is carried out with high statistics using more than 100 gauge configurations. In particular, about 1000 gauge configurations are used near the critical temperature T_c. The…
We consider the chiral condensate in the baryonic dense medium using the generalized Sakai-Sugimoto model. It is defined as the vacuum expectation value of open Wilson line that is proposed to be calculated by use of the area of world-sheet instanton. We evaluate it in confined as well as deconfined phase. In both phases, the chiral condensate has a minimum as a function of baryon density. In the deconfined phase, taking into account the chiral symmetry restoration, we classify the behavior of chiral condensate into three types. One can set the parameter of the theory such that the results, in…
We study the dynamics of a second order phase transition in a situation thatmimics a sudden quench to a temperature below the critical temperature in a model with dynamical symmetry breaking. In particular we show that the domains of correlated values of the condensate grow as $\sqrt{t}$ and that this result seems to be largely model independent.
Using the Langevin equation for the linear $σ$ model, we have investigated the effect of friction and noise on the possible disoriented chiral condensate formation. Friction and noise are supposed to suppress longwavelength oscillations and growth of disoriented chiral condensate domains. Details simulation shows that for heavy ion collisions, interplay of friction and noise occur in such a manner that formation of disoriented chiral condensate domains are enhanced.
The relation between the chiral quark condensate in QCD sum rules and chiral perturbation theory is clarified with the help of a low-energy theorem for the scalar and pseudoscalar correlation functions. It is found that the quark condensate should be identified with the non-normal-ordered vacuum expectation value of quark-antiquark fields. Utilising results on flavour SU(3) breaking of the quark condensate from QCD sum rules, the unphysical low-energy constant H_2^r in the chiral Lagrangian, as well as next-to-leading order corrections to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation are estimated.
Theoretical speculations and experimental data suggesting the possibility of observing disoriented chiral condensates at a Full Acceptance Detector are reviewed.
We investigate two different models. In one of them massive fermions interact with a massive scalar field and in the other the fermion field is in an electrical field (QED2). The chiral condensates are calculated in one-loop approximation. We found that the chiral condensate in the case of the Yukawa interaction the fermions and scalar field does not vanish if the mass of the fermion field tends to zero. The chiral condensate disappears in QED2, if the fermion mass is zero.
We derive a new exact self-consistent crystalline condensate in the 1+1 dimensional chiral Gross-Neveu model. This also yields a new exact crystalline solution for the one dimensional Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and the Eilenberger equation of semiclassical superconductivity. We show that the functional gap equation can be reduced to a solvable nonlinear equation, and discuss implications for the temperature-chemical potential phase diagram.
It is known that, in the chiral limit, spatially inhomogeneous chiral condensate occurs in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite density within a mean-field approximation. We study here how an introduction of current quark mass affects the ground state with the spatially inhomogeneous chiral condensate. Numerical calculations show that, even if the current quark mass is introduced, the spatially inhomogeneous chiral condensate can take place. In order to obtain the ground state, the thermodynamic potential is calculated with a mean-field approximation. The influence of finite current ma…
The probability distribution of a neutral pion fraction from independent domains of disoriented chiral condensate is characterized. The signal for the condensate is still clear for a large number of independent domains if one of them is predominant.
It is demonstrated, that chirality violating condensates in massless QCD arise from zero mode solutions of Dirac equations in arbitrary gluon fields. Basing of this idea, the model is suggested, which allows one to calculate quark condensate magnetic susceptibilities in the external constant electromagnetic field.
We consider the quantum state describing the Disoriented Chiral Condensate (DCC) which may be produced in high energy collisions. Using the approach suggested by Rajagopal and Wilczek to describe the amplification of the long wavelength classical pion modes, we consider the quantum-mechanical evolution of the initial vacuum state into the final squeezed state describing the DCC. The obtained wave function has some interesting properties which are discussed.
The current theoretical understanding of disoriented chiral condensate is briefly reviewed. I discuss the basic idea, the formation mechanism and experimental signatures of DCC in high energy collisions.
Within the relativistic Hartree approach using a Lagrangian with density-dependent parameters respecting the chiral limit, it is found that the vacuum corrections from the nucleon Dirac sea soften the equation of state and favor the chiral symmetry restoration at high densities.
The Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with a Polyakov loop is extended to finite isospin chemical potential case, which is characterized by simultaneous coupling of pion condensate, chiral condensate and Polyakov loop. The pion condensate, chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and isospin chemical potential are investigated by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. The resulting $(T,μ_I)$ phase diagram is studied with emphasis on the critical point and Polyakov loop dynamics. The tricritical point for the pion superfluidity phase transition is confirmed and …
We study the production of photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate. We propose that to search for non-equilibrium photons in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions can be a potential test of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates.
Meson corrections on chiral condensate up to next-to-leading order in $1/N_c$ expansion at finite density are investigated in NJL model with chiral symmetry explicitly breaking. Compared with the mean-field results, the chiral phase transition is still of first order, while the properties at the critical density of chiral phase transition are found to change significantly.
The probability distribution of neutral pion fraction from independent domains of disoriented chiral condensate is characterized. The signal for the condensate is clear for a small number of domains but is greatly reduced for more than three.
In the physical vacuum of QCD, the energy density of light-quark fields strongly coupled to slowly varying gluon fields can be negative. The states that drive this energy density lowest are condensates of pairs of quarks and antiquarks of nearly opposite momenta. These quark-antiquark condensates break chiral symmetry. They may also affect other features of hadronic physics, such as the range of the strong force and the confinement of color.
We investigate a model with a massless fermion and a massive scalar field with the Yukawa interaction between these two fields. The model possess a discrete symmetry. The chiral condensate is calculated in one-loop approximation in $(1+1)$-dimensional spacetime. It was shown that the chiral condensate vanishes at two different values of the coupling constant. At the first of them there is a phase transition in which the discrete symmetry is restored. At the second zero of the chiral condensate it takes place a phase transition which distinguishes the positive $μ^2$ from the negative $μ^2$, whe…
We use the linear $σ$ model to analyse the dynamics of a disoriented chiral condensate. For idealized boundary conditions appropriate to high energy collisions, the problem can be reduced to a one dimensional one. The evolution of the chiral state is then that of a simple dynamical system and can be studied analytically.
We have investigated the phase transition and disoriented chiral condensate domain formation in linear sigma model. Solving the equation of motion for the sigma model fields in contact with a heat bath, we have shown that the fields undergo phase transition above a certain critical temperature(T_c). It was also shown that when the fields thermalised at temperature above T_c are cooled down sufficiently rapidly, disoriented chiral condensate domains are formed quite late in the evolution.
We present a model independent study of the chiral condensate evolution in a hadronic gas, in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The meson-meson interactions are described within Chiral Perturbation Theory and the pion-nucleon interaction by means of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, both at one loop, and nucleon-nucleon interactions can be safely neglected within our hadronic gas domain of validity. Together with the virial expansion, this provides a systematic expansion at low temperatures and chemical potentials, which includes the physical quark masses. This can ser…
As an alternative to the two-quark condensate we propose a specific four-quark condensate as an order parameter of chiral symmetry restoration. We show that this four-quark condensate is closer connected to observable quantities. Within a resonance gas model we calculate the in-medium changes of two- and four-quark condensate as functions of temperature and baryo-chemical potential. In this way we estimate the line of chiral symmetry restoration in the temperature-potential plane and also as a function of energy and baryon density. It turns out that the line determined from the vanishing of th…
We investigate the influence of the isospin asymmetry on the phase structure of quark matter near the chiral critical point systematically using a generalized version of Ginzburg-Landau approach. The effect has proven to be so profound that it brings about not only a shift of the critical point but also a rich variety of phases in its neighborhood. In particular, there shows up a phase with spatially varying charged pion condensate which we name the "solitonic pion condensate" in addition to the "chiral defect lattice" where the chiral condensate is partially destructed by periodic placements …
We discuss the quark condensate of the vacuum inside the baryon. We analyze the 1+1 dimensional chiral bag in analogy with the realistic 3+1 dimensional one. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type interaction is used to investigate the quark condensate in the chiral bag. Considering the strong meson-quark coupling, we solve the mean field solution to the scalar and pseudoscalar channels by including the chiral Casimir effects. The self-consistent equation allows a finite value of the quark condensate and hence a finite dynamical quark mass inside the bag. It is shown that an approximate Cheshire C…
