The chiral magnetization properties of cold and hot vacua are studied using quenched simulations in lattice Yang-Mills theory. In weak external magnetic fields the magnetization is proportional to the first power of the magnetic field. We evaluate numerically the coefficient of the proportionality (the chiral susceptibility) using near-zero eigenmodes of overlap fermions. We found that the product of the chiral susceptibility and the chiral condensate equals to 46(3) MeV. This value is very close to the phenomenological value of 50 MeV. In strong fields the magnetization is a nonlinear function of the applied magnetic field. We find that the nonlinear features of the magnetization are well described by an inverse tangent function. The magnetization is weakly sensitive to temperature in the confinement phase.
It is offered to consider monopoles in Abelian Projection as quantum excitations which are solutions of the quantized Yang-Mills equations. According to the Heisenberg quantization method these equations are equivalent an infinite set of equations for Green's functions. A procedure for cutting off these infinite series of differential equations after some assumptions is offered. The received equations are identical to equations describing a dyon.
We show that a certain type of color magnetic condensation originating from magnetic monopole configurations is sufficient to provide the mass for off-diagonal gluons in the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory under the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition. We point out that the generated gluon mass can cure the instability of the Savvidy vacuum. In fact, such a novel type of magnetic condensation is shown to occur by calculating the effective potential. This enables us to explain the infrared Abelian dominance and monopole dominance by way of a non-Abelian Stokes theorem, which suggests the dual superconduc…
Various field strength correlators are investigated in the maximal Abelian projection of pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory. High precision measurements of the colour fields, monopole currents, their curls and divergences allow for detailed checks of the dual superconductor scenario. On this basis, we perform a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis of the flux tube profile from which we derive the size of the penetration length, LAMBDA = 0.16(2) fm, and coherence length of the monopole condensate wave function, XI = 0.27(3) fm. The ratio of these numbers is KAPPA = LAMBDA/XI = 0.59(13) which is below the…
We reconsider the problem of calculating the vacuum free energy (density) of QCD and the shift of the quark condensates in the presence of a uniform background magnetic field using two-and-three-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). Using the free energy, we calculate the degenerate, light quark condensates in the two-flavor case and the up, down and strange quark condensates in the three-flavor case. We also use the vacuum free energy to calculate the (renormalized) magnetization of the QCD vacuum, which shows that it is paramagnetic. We find that the three-flavor light-quark condensates…
We have proposed the non-Abelian dual superconductivity picture for quark confinement in the SU(3) Yang-Mills (YM) theory, and have given numerical evidences for the restricted-field dominance and the non-Abelian magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension by applying a new formulation of the YM theory on a lattice. To establish the non-Abelian dual superconductivity picture for quark confinement, we have observed the non-Abelian dual Meissner effect in the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory by measuring the chromoelectric flux created by the quark-antiquark source, and the non-Abelian magnetic mon…
We give an argument for deriving analytically the infrared ``Abelian'' dominance in a gauge invariant way for the Wilson loop average in SU(2) Yang--Mills theory. In other words, we propose a possible mechanism for realizing the dynamical Abelian projection in the SU(2) gauge-invariant manner without breaking color symmetry. This supports validity of the dual superconductivity picture for quark confinement. We also discuss the stability of the vacuum with magnetic condensation as a by-product of this result.
It is proven that dual superconductivity of QCD vacuum in the confining phase is an intinsic property, independent on the choice of the abelian projection used to define the monopoles.
We study the topological feature in the QCD vacuum based on the hypothesis of abelian dominance. The topological charge $Q_{\rm SU(2)}$ can be explicitly represented in terms of the monopole current in the abelian dominated system. To appreciate its justification, we directly measure the corresponding topological charge $Q_{\rm Mono}$, which is reconstructed only from the monopole current and the abelian component of gauge fields, by using the Monte Carlo simulation on SU(2) lattice. We find that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between $Q_{\rm SU(2)}$ and $Q_{\rm Mono}$ in the maximal…
We investigate a dynamical mass generation mechanism for the off-diagonal gluons and ghosts in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories, quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. Such a mass can be seen as evidence for the Abelian dominance in that gauge. It originates from the condensation of a mixed gluon-ghost operator of mass dimension two, which lowers the vacuum energy. We construct an effective potential for this operator by a combined use of the local composite operators technique with the algebraic renormalization and we discuss the gauge parameter independence of the results. We also show that it is …
We present evidence that the center vortex model of confinement is more consistent with lattice results than other currently available models. In particular we show that Abelian field distributions predicted by monopole plasma, caloron gas or dual superconductor models cannot reproduce the area-law falloff of double winding Wilson loops in full $SU(2)$ and center vortex only gauge fields.
The vacuum type of SU(2) gluodynamics is studied using Monte-Carlo simulations in maximally Abelian (MA) gauge and in Landau (LA) gauge, where the dual Meissner effect is observed to work. The dual Meissner effect is characterized by the coherence and the penetration lengths. Correlations between Wilson loops and electric fields are evaluated in order to measure the penetration length in both gauges. The coherence length is shown to be fixed in the MA gauge from measurements of the monopole density around the static quark-antiquark pair. It is also shown numerically that a dimension 2 gluon op…
We study the response of the QCD vacuum to an external abelian chromomagnetic field in the framework of a non local Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop. We use the Lattice results on the deconfinement temperature of the pure gauge theory to compute the same quantity in the presence of dynamical quarks. We find a linear relationship between the deconfinement temperature with quarks and the squared root of the applied field strength, $gH$, in qualitative (and to some extent also quantitative) agreement with existing Lattice calculations. On the other hand, we find a discrepancy on th…
The dual superconductivity of the vacuum in SU(3) gauge theory is investigated by constructing a disorder parameter which signals monopole condensation in various abelian projections and by studying numerically on the lattice its behaviour at finite temperature. We find that the vacuum is a dual superconductor with respect to each U(1) of the residual gauge group after abelian projection independently of the abelian projection chosen. Like in the SU(2) case (discussed in a companion paper) a finite size scaling analysis enables us to extract the indices of the phase transition and our analysis…
We show that the magnetic monopole promoted to the dyon due to the vacuum angle $θ$ resolves the U(1) problem in the sense that the dyon obtained in this way gives a dominant contribution to the topological susceptibility. For this purpose, we derive an Abelian-projected effective gauge theory written in terms of Abelian degrees of freedom, which is obtained by integrating out all the off-diagonal degrees of freedom involved in the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with the vacuum angle $θ$. We evaluate the topological susceptibility by estimating the classical part of the effective dyon action obtained…
Bilocal correlator in gluodynamics is evaluated at finite temperature in the framework of instanton gas model. It is demonstrated that vacuum correlation length decreases with a growing temperature. Obtained results are compared with lattice data for the bilocal correlator at finite temperature. Density of instantons and possible structures of nonperturbative vacuum are discussed.
We study vacuum dynamics of SU(3) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature using the lattice Schrödinger functional. The SU(3) vacuum is probed by means of an external constant Abelian chromomagnetic field. We find that by increasing the strength of the applied external field the deconfinement temperature decreases towards zero. This means that strong enough Abelian chromomagnetic fields destroy confinement of color. We discuss some consequences of this phenomenon on confinement and quark stars.
The QCD vacuum can be studied using external fields. We report here results respectively obtained probing the lattice QCD vacuum by means of an abelian monopole field and of an abelian chromomagnetic field
The one loop effective potential for a non-Abelian gauge configuration is analyzed using the background field method. The Savvidy result and the non-Abelian ansatz, the other alternative possible background that generates a constant color magnetic field configuration, are compared. This second possibility is very interesting because it avoids the possible coordinate singularity, ${\rm Det}B_i^a=0$, and it is easy to implement in lattice simulations. We emphasize the interesting dependence of the potential by the gauge fixing parameter $α$, when the loop expansion is performed around a non triv…
The two-dimensional, massless Gross-Neveu model with Nc colors and SU(2) isospin is studied analytically in the large Nc limit. The chiral SU(2)L X SU(2)R symmetry is broken spontaneously in the vacuum. Twisted kinks connecting two arbitrary points on the vacuum manifold S3 are constructed, and their properties are explored. The phase diagram as a function of temperature, baryon- and isospin chemical potential is discussed, with special emphasis on inhomogeneous phases. The preferred form of the condensate is a product of the real kink crystal and the chiral spiral. Kink-kink scattering is sol…
As a prelude to a truly non-perturbative evaluation of the effective potential in terms of lattice QCD, the one loop effective potential for a non-Abelian gauge configuration is calculated using the background field method. Through a non-trivial correlation between the space and color orientations the new background field avoids the possible coordinate singularity, ${\rm Det}B_i^a=0$, observed recently by Ken Johnson and his collaborators in their Schrödinger functional study of the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. In addition, since our ansatz generates a constant color magnetic field through the com…
We analyze the vacuum structure of SU(2) QCD with multiple massless adjoint representation fermions formulated on a small spatial $S^1 \times \R^3$. The absence of thermal fluctuations, and the fact that quantum fluctuations favoring the vacuum with unbroken center symmetry in a weakly coupled regime renders the interesting dynamics of these theories analytically calculable. Confinement, the area law behavior for large Wilson loops, and the generation of the mass gap in the gluonic sector are shown analytically. By abelian duality transformation, the long distance effective theory of QCD is ma…
It is demonstrated that monopole condensation in the confined phase of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories is independent of the specific Abelian projection used to define the monopoles. Hence the dual excitations which condense in the vacuum to produce confinement must have magnetic U(1) charge in all the Abelian projections. Some physical implications of this result are discussed.
A possible electric-magnetic duality suggests that the confinement of non-Abelian electric charges manifests itself as a perturbative quantum effect for the dual magnetic charges. Motivated by this possibility, we study vacuum fluctuations around a non-Abelian monopole-antimonopole pair treated as point objects with charges g=\pm n/2 (n=1,2,...), and placed on the antipodes of a three sphere of radius R. We explicitly find all the fluctuation modes by linearizing and solving the Yang-Mills equations about this background field on a three sphere. We recover, generalize and extend earlier result…
Two approaches are pursued to determine the magnetization of the QCD vacuum at zero and nonzero temperatures using lattice simulations. The first method builds on pressure anisotropies which are induced by the magnetic field on the lattice. The second approach is a novel, generalized version of the integral method, which exploits the independence of the theory on B for asymptotically large quark masses. Both approaches give consistent results and confirm that the QCD medium is paramagnetic. Finally, an interesting relation between QCD paramagnetism, magnetic catalysis of the QCD condensate and…
We compare vacuum dynamics of abelian versus non abelian lattice gauge theories in presence of external fields. We find that the deconfinement temperature of non abelian theories depends on the strength of a constant abelian chromomagnetic field end eventually goes to zero. On the contrary such an effect is not shared by abelian theories. We argue on the relevance of this result to understand the QCD vacuum.
Confinement in non-Abelian gauge theories, such as QCD, is often explained using an analogy to type II superconductivity. In this analogy the existence of the ``Meissner'' effect for quarks with respect to the QCD vacuum is an important element. Here we show that using the ideas of Abelian projection it is possible to arrive at an effective London equation from a non-Abelian gauge theory. (London's equation gave a phenomenological description of the Meissner effect prior to the Ginzburg-Landau or BCS theory of superconductors). The Abelian projected gauge field acts as the E&M field in normal …
Violation of non-Abelian Bianchi identity can be regarded as $N^2-1$ Abelian-like monopole currents in the continuum SU(N) QCD. Three Abelian-like monopoles, when defined in SU(2) gluodynamics on the lattice à la DeGrand-Toussaint, are shown to have the continuum limit with respect to the color-invariant monopole density and the effective monopole action. Since each Abelian-like monopole is not gauge invariant, we have introduced various partial gauge fixing for the purpose of reducing lattice artifact monopoles in the thermalized vacuum. Here we investigate Abelian and monopole dominances and…
The vacuum dynamics of SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theories is studied by means of a gauge-invariant effective action defined using the lattice Schrödinger functional at finite temperature. In the case of the SU(3) gauge theory numerical simulations are performed both at zero and finite temperature. The vacuum is probed using an external constant Abelian chromomagnetic field. At zero temperature, in agreement with our previous studies for the SU(2) theory, the external field is totally screened in the continuum limit. At finite temperature numerical data suggest that confinement is restored …
I present numerical tests of several recent proposals for the Yang-Mills vacuum wavefunctional in D=2+1 dimensions. In these tests the predicted relative values of the squared wavefunctional, evaluated on a finite set of abelian plane wave and non-abelian constant configurations, are compared to the corresponding values for the true ground state, extracted from Monte Carlo simulations. I also study how the 2+1 dimensional color Coulomb potential, averaged over a set of simple trial configurations, varies with the proximity of those configurations to the Gribov horizon.
We study the condensation of Abelian and Center vortices in SU(3) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. We find that both vortices condense in the confined phase of the SU(3) vacuum.
We study topological defects constructed from diagonal and non-diagonal gluons in Abelian projection of zero temperature lattice QCD. We compare results obtained in the quenched and non-quenched vacuum field configurations and show that the density of hybrids is higher than the density of monopoles. The density of some hybrids is sensitive to the presence of the virtual fermions.
We derive exact relations for SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions. In terms of Abelian projection, these are the expectation values of Maxwell equations that define a new field strength operator and conserved, dynamic electric currents formed from the charged matter and ghost fields. The effect of gauge fixing is calculated, and in the maximally Abelian gauge we find antiscreening of U(1) Wilson loop source charges. We discuss the importance of these quantities in the dual superconducting vacuum mechanism of confinement.
Using the lattice Schrödinger functional we study vacuum dynamics of SU(3) gauge theory at finite temperature. The vacuum is probed by means of an external constant Abelian chromomagnetic field. We find that by increasing the strength of the applied external field the deconfinement temperature decreases towards zero. This implies that strong enough Abelian chromomagnetic fields destroy confinement of color.
We investigate the dual superconductivity hypothesis in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We focus on the dual Meissner effect by analyzing the distribution of the color fields due to a static quark-antiquark pair. We find evidence of the dual Meissner effect both in the maximally Abelian gauge and without gauge fixing. We measure the London penetration length. Our results suggest that the London penetration length is a physical gauge-invariant quantity. We put out a simple relation between the penetration length and the square root of the string tension. We find that our extimation is quite cl…
The dual Meissner effect is described and numerically observed in a gauge-invariant way in lattice Monte-Carlo simulations in pure SU(2) QCD. The squeezing of the non-Abelian electric field between a pair of static quark and anti-quark occurs due to the solenoidal current coming from the gauge-invariant monopole-like quantity. Preliminary results are obtained with respect to the vacuum type of the confinement phase. The SU(2) QCD vacuum seems near the border between the type 1 and the type 2 dual superconductors. The theoretical background of this idea is published in another report \cite{Suzu…
A method of measuring relative probabilities of various gauge-field configurations in the Yang-Mills vacuum was proposed long ago [Phys. Lett. B 223 (1989) 207]. We applied this method to compute the square of the YM vacuum wave functional (VWF) in numerical simulations of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in D=3+1 dimensions for sets of abelian plane waves. The results were compared to predictions based on some VWF proposals in the literature. None of them describes the data satisfactorily at large plane-wave momenta. The phenomenological best fit to data, containing three free parameters, appears t…
We study vacuum dynamics of SU(3) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. Using the lattice Schrödinger functional, SU(3) vacuum is probed by means of an external constant Abelian chromomagnetic field. Our preliminary numerical data suggest that, by increasing the strength of the applied external field, deconfinement temperature decreases towards zero. This means that strong enough Abelian chromomagnetic fields destroy confinement of color.
We investigate the effects of several Abelian external fluxes $ϕ$, on the Euclidean Dirac spectrum of light quarks in QCD with two colors. Our results provide for a novel way of assessing the pion weak decay constant directly from spectral fluctuations, and discriminating a flux-rich from a flux-poor vacuum, using QCD lattice simulations.
We introduce a gauge-invariant measure of the local "abelianicity" of any given lattice configuration in non-abelian lattice gauge theory; it is essentially a comparison of the magnitude of field strength commutators to the magnitude of the field strength itself. This measure, in conjunction with the cooling technique, is used to probe the SU(2) lattice vacuum for a possible large-scale abelian background, underlying the local short-range field fluctuations. We do, in fact, find a substantial rise in abelianicity over 10 cooling steps or so, after which the abelianicity tends to drop again.
We give a short review of the recently obtained result that the magnetic monopole promoted to the dyon due to the vacuum angle $θ$ resolves the U(1) problem in the sense that the dyon obtained in this way gives a dominant contribution to the topological susceptibility
We apply smoothing to SU(2) lattice field configurations in 3+1 dimensions before fixing to the maximally Abelian gauge. The Abelian projected string tension is shown to be stable under this, whilst the monopole string tension declines by O(30%). Blocking of the SU(2) fields reduces this effect, but the use of extended monopole definitions does not. We discuss these results in the context of additional confining excitations in the U(1) vacuum.
We study theoretical bases of the dual Higgs theory for confinement physics in QCD in terms of monopoles and the gluon configuration in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge. Abelian dominance for the confinement force can be analytically proved by regarding the off-diagonal angle variable as a random variable in the lattice formalism. In the long-distance scale, the contribution of off-diagonal gluons to the Wilson loop cancels each other and exhibits a perimeter law behavior, which leads to exact abelian dominance on the string tension if the finite size effect of the Wilson loop is removed. We i…
We show that the hypothesis of abelian dominance allows QCD-monopoles to preserve the topological feature of the QCD vacuum within SU(2) lattice gauge theory. An analytical study is made to find the relationship between the topological charge and QCD-monopoles in the lattice formulation. The topological charge is explicitly represented in terms of the monopole current and the abelian component of gauge fields in the abelian dominated system. We numerically examine the relation and demonstrate the abelian dominance in the topological structure by using Monte Carlo simulation.
The vacuum dynamics of SU(2) lattice gauge theory is studied by means of a gauge-invariant effective action defined using the lattice Schrödinger functional. Numerical simulations are performed both at zero and finite temperature. The vacuum is probed using an external constant Abelian chromomagnetic field. The results suggest that at zero temperature the external field is screened in the continuum limit. On the other hand at finite temperature it seems that confinement is restored by increasing the strength of the applied field.
Renormalization group (RG) smoothing is employed on the lattice to investigate and to compare the monopole structure of the SU(2) vacuum as seen in different gauges (maximally Abelian (MAG), Polyakov loop (PG) and Laplacian gauge (LG)). Physically relevant types of monopoles (LG and MAG) are distinguished by their behavior near the deconfining phase transition. For the LG, Abelian projection reproduces well the gauge independent monopole structure encoded in an auxiliary Higgs field. Density and localization properties of monopoles, their non-Abelian action and topological charge are studied. …
We explore vortex formation for Abelian projected SU(2) in the Polyakov gauge and compare the results with those calculated in the maximal Abelian gauge. In both gauges, a non-zero vacuum expectation value of a monopole field operator signals confinement. We find vortices in the Polyakov projection, confirming the connection between the dual superconductor order parameter and the existence of vortices. However we find that the Polyakov Abelian projection is problematic, leaving the maximal Abelian projection as the best candidate to define an effective theory of confinement in this scenario.
