We study the response of the QCD vacuum to an external abelian chromomagnetic field in the framework of a non local Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop. We use the Lattice results on the deconfinement temperature of the pure gauge theory to compute the same quantity in the presence of dynamical quarks. We find a linear relationship between the deconfinement temperature with quarks and the squared root of the applied field strength, $gH$, in qualitative (and to some extent also quantitative) agreement with existing Lattice calculations. On the other hand, we find a discrepancy on the approximate chiral symmetry restoration: while Lattice results suggest the deconfinement and the chiral restoration remain linked even at non-zero value of $gH$, our results are consistent with a scenario in which the two transitions are separated as $gH$ is increased.
We study vacuum dynamics of SU(3) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature using the lattice Schrödinger functional. The SU(3) vacuum is probed by means of an external constant Abelian chromomagnetic field. We find that by increasing the strength of the applied external field the deconfinement temperature decreases towards zero. This means that strong enough Abelian chromomagnetic fields destroy confinement of color. We discuss some consequences of this phenomenon on confinement and quark stars.
We study the effects of chromoelectric and chromomagnetic dipole moments (CEDM and CMDM) on the production cross section of single top $tW$-channel at the LHC based on the effective Lagrangian approach. We show that the impact of CEDM and CMDM could be large. Using the experimental measurement of the $tW$-channel cross section, constraints on CEDM and CMDM are extracted. These constraints are comparable with the ones obtained from the top pair analysis.
The Next Linear Collider(NLC) will provide a excellent tool for probing the detailed nature of the top quark. By extending the recent analysis of Dokshitzer, Khoze and Sterling, we perform a preliminary examination of the influence of an anomalous chromomagnetic moment for the top, $κ$, on the spectrum of gluon radiation associated with $t\bar t$ production. In particular, we analyze the sensitivity of future data to non-zero values of $κ$ and estimate the limits that can be placed on this parameter at the NLC with center of mass energies $\sqrt {s}=$ 500 and 1000 GeV.
We present predictions at NLO accuracy in QCD for top-quark pair production induced by an anomalous chromomagnetic dipole moment of the top quark. Our results are obtained for total as well as fully differential cross sections, including matching to parton shower simulations. This process is expected to provide the most stringent direct limits on top-quark chromomagnetic dipole moment. We find that NLO corrections increase the contribution from the dipole moment by about 50\% at the LHC, and significantly reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence. Using the NLO prediction, …
We study the effects of the anomalous chromoelectric and chromomagnetic dipole moments of the top quark on the top-pair production, on the top-pair plus 1jet production, and on their ratios, as well as their dependence on the transverse momenta of the top quark and the jet. We also construct CP-odd and $\hat T$-odd observables to probe the dispersive part of the chromoelectric form factor of the top quark, and compare their sensitivities in both top-pair and top-pair plus 1 jet production.
We review the effects of an anomalous chromomagnetic moment on top quark pair production at the Tevatron for Run II. Apart from an overall rescaling by the total cross section these couplings have little influence on top production characteristics. We then examine how the exchange of a Kaluza-Klein tower of gravitons arising from the low scale quantum gravity scenario of Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali influences top pair cross sections and several associated kinematical distributions. The data that will be available with Run II luminosities is shown to be sensitive to values of the effecti…
The Tevatron, where the top quark was discovered, and the currently functional Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with copiously produced top pairs, enable a detailed study of top-quark properties. In particular, they can be used to test the couplings of the top quark to gauge bosons. Several extensions of the standard model (SM) can give rise to anomalous couplings of the top quark to gauge bosons, in particular, the gluons. In this work we examine how top-quark polarization, which is predicted to be negligibly small in the SM, can be used to measure chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings of t…
A natural mechanism for finite temperature quark confinement arises via the coupling of the adjoint Polyakov loop to the chromomagnetic field. Lattice simulations and analytical results both support this hypothesis. Finite temperature SU(3) lattice simulations show that a large external coupling to the chromomagnetic field restores confinement at temperatures above the normal deconfining temperature. A one-loop calculation of the effective potential for SU(2) gluons in a background field shows that a constant chromomagnetic field can drive the Polyakov loop to confining behavior, and the Polya…
The magnetic mass of neutral gluons in Abelian chromomagnetic field at high temperature is calculated in SU(2)$ gluodynamics. It is noted that such type fields are spontaneously generated at high temperature. The mass is computed either from the Schwinger-Dyson equation accounting for the one-loop polarization tensor or in Monte-Carlo simulations on a lattice. In latter case, an average magnetic flux penetrating a plaquette is measured for a number of lattices. Both calculations are in agreement with each other and result in zero magnetic mass. Some applications of the results obtained are dis…
We consider the non-Abelian Bianchi identities in SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory in D=3,4 focusing on the possibility of their violation and the significance of the chromomagnetic fields degeneracy points. We show that the recently proposed non-Abelian Stokes theorem allows to formulate the Bianchi identities in terms of the physical fluxes and their relative color orientations. Then the violation of Bianchi identities becomes a well defined concept ultimately related to the degeneracy points. The locality and gauge invariance of our approach allows to study the problem numerically. We present e…
The general features of quark and pion condensation in dense quark matter with flavor asymmetry have been considered at finite temperature in the presence of a chromomagnetic background field modelling the gluon condensate. In particular, pion condensation in the case of a constant abelian chromomagnetic field and zero temperature has been studied both analytically and numerically. Under the influence of the chromomagnetic background field the effective potential of the system is found to have a global minimum for a finite pion condensate even for small values of the effective quark coupling c…
The Tevatron and the Next Linear Collider(NLC) will be excellent tools for probing the detailed nature of the top quark. We perform a preliminary examination of the influence of an anomalous chromomagnetic moment for the top, $κ$, on the characteristics of $t\bar t$ production at the Tevatron and on the spectrum of gluon radiation associated with $t\bar t$ production at the NLC. In particular, we analyze the sensitivity of future data to non-zero values of $κ$ and estimate the limits that can be placed on this parameter at the Tevatron and at the NLC with center of mass energies of $\sqrt {s}=…
Chromomagnetic and chromoelectric dipole interactions of the top quark are studied in a model independent framework. Limits are set on the scale of new physics that might lead to such contributions using available Tevatron data. Prospects at the LHC are reviewed.
Anomalous chromomagnetic and chromoelectric dipole moments of the top quark may arise from various high scale theories. We carry out a model independent study of such interactions focusing on the limits that can be obtained from current Tevatron data and the improvements that may be possible at the LHC or at a future Linear Collider.
The vacuum state of SU(3) gluodynamics at high temperature is investigated. A consistent approach including the calculation of either the spontaneously generated constant chromomagnetic isotopic $H_{3}$ and hypercharge $H_{8}$ fields or the polarization operator of charged gluons in this background is applied. It is shown within the effective potential including the one-loop plus daisy diagrams that the specific values of the fields deliver a global minimum to free energy. The spectrum of the transversal charged modes is stable at high temperature due to a gluon magnetic mass accounting for th…
We calculate the fermionic corrections to the photon-energy spectrum of Bbar -> X_sgamma which arise from the self-interference of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 at next-to-next-to-leading order by applying naive non-abelianization. The resulting O(beta_0 alpha_s^2) correction to the Bbar -> X_sgamma branching ratio amounts to a relative shift of +0.12% (+0.27%) for a photon-energy cut of 1.6 GeV (1.0 GeV). We also comment on the potential size of resummation and non-perturbative effects related to Q_8.
The one-loop quark contribution to the QCD effective potential for the homogeneous Abelian gluon field in the presence of external strong electromagnetic field is evaluated. The structure of extrema of the potential as a function of the angles between chromoelectric, chromomagnetic and electromagnetic fields is analyzed. In this setup, the electromagnetic field is considered as an external one while the gluon field represents domain structured nonperturbative gluon configurations related to the QCD vacuum in the confinement phase. Two particularly interesting gluon configurations, (anti-)self-…
We study the dynamics of color fields as generated by simple configurations of relativistic particles with Abelian and non-Abelian (SU(2)) charges in the classical limit. We find that chromodynamic (non-Abelian) systems generally show Coulomb-like features by analogy with electrodynamics. A peculiar feature in the non-Abelian case is the additional strength of the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic fields caused by the contribution of changing the color charge. This change of color SU(2) charges results in a rotation of the color vector which is getting very fast at close partonic distances. Th…
The dual superconductivity is a promising mechanism of quark confinement. In the preceding works, we have given a non-Abelian dual superconductivity picture for quark confinement, and demonstrated the numerical evidences on the lattice. In this talk, we focus on the the confinement and deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature in view of the dual superconductivity. By using our new formulation of lattice Yang-Mills theory and numerical simulations on the lattice, we extract the dominant mode for confinement by decomposing the Yang-Mills field, and we investigate the Polyakov loop av…
The problem of two nonrelativistic chromoelectric and chromomagnetic charges in a Higgs vacuum is considered in classical field theory. An approximation of interaction potential is constructed on the basis of a numerical solution to the equations of gluostatics. The concept of a non-Abelian Abrikosov vortex is discussed. It is shown that the results of Ginzburg-Landau theory for the tension of a string between magnetic charges can be directly extended to the non-Abelian case.
It is well known that Yang-Mills theory in vacuum has a perturbative instability to spontaneously form a large scale magnetic field (the Savvidy mechanism) and that a constant field is unstable so that a possible ground state has to be inhomogenous over the non-perturbative scale Lambda (the Copenhagen vacuum). We argue that this spontaneous instability does not occur at high temperature when the induced field strength gB ~ Lambda^2 is much weaker than the magnetic mass squared (g^2T)^2. At high temperature oscillations of gauge fields acquire a thermal mass M ~ gT and we show that this mass s…
Top spin correlation has been shown to be nontrivial in hadronic top-pair production, and can be realized by the asymmetries of the decay products of the top quark and antiquark. We show in this work that the top spin correlation is a sensitive probe to the anomalous top-quark couplings beyond the standard model. Specifically, we look at the anomalous chromomagnetic and chromoelectric dipole moments, as well as a right-handed component in the weak decay of the top quark. We found a few measurable asymmetries formed by the decay products of the top-quark pair that vary in accord with the spin c…
The Debye mass m_D is computed nonperturbatively in the deconfined phase of QCD, where chromomagnetic confinement is known to be present. The latter defines m_D to be m_D=c_D\sqrt{σ_s}, where c_D \approx 2 and σ_s=σ_s(T) is the spatial string tension. The resulting magnitude of m_D(T) and temperature dependence are in good agreement with lattice calculations.
In this paper, we study the sensitivity of the fraction of $t\bar{t}$ events arising from gluon-gluon fusion to the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic dipole moments (CEDM and CMDM) as well as the total and differential $t\bar{t}$ cross sections at the LHC and Tevatron. The sensitivity of measured charged asymmetry at the LHC to CEDM and CMDM is also studied. We find that at the Tevatron and the LHC, non-zero values of CMDM could suppress the $t\bar{t}$ production rate. It is shown that the ratio of $σ(gg\rightarrow t\bar{t})/σ(p\bar{p}\rightarrow t\bar{t})$ at the Tevatron is more sensitive to…
Various field strength correlators are investigated in the maximal Abelian projection of pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory. High precision measurements of the colour fields, monopole currents, their curls and divergences allow for detailed checks of the dual superconductor scenario. On this basis, we perform a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis of the flux tube profile from which we derive the size of the penetration length, LAMBDA = 0.16(2) fm, and coherence length of the monopole condensate wave function, XI = 0.27(3) fm. The ratio of these numbers is KAPPA = LAMBDA/XI = 0.59(13) which is below the…
Effective interactions involving both the top quark and the Higgs field are among the least constrained of all possible (gauge invariant) dimension-six operators in the Standard Model. Such a handful of operators, in particular the top quark chromomagnetic dipole moment, might encapsulate signs of the new physics responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. In this work, we compute the contributions of these operators to inclusive Higgs and t tbar h production. We argue that: i) rather strong constraints on the overall size of these operators can already be obtained from the current limits/e…
A system of chromodynamic fields, which can be treated as classical, is generated at the earliest stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Numerical simulations show that the system is unstable but the nature of the instability is not well understood. We study the problem systematically. In the first paper, we have performed a linear stability analysis of space-time uniform chromoelectric and chromomagnetic fields. There they have been considered the Abelian configurations of single-color potentials linearly depending on coordinates and nonAbelian ones where the fields are generated by the …
We study the (3+1)-dimensional evolution of non-Abelian plasma instabilities in the presence of a longitudinally expanding background of hard particles using the discretized hard loop framework. The free streaming background dynamically generates a momentum-space anisotropic distribution which is unstable to the rapid growth of chromomagnetic and chromoelectric fields. These fields produce longitudinal pressure that works to isotropize the system. Extrapolating our results to energies probed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions we find, however, that a pressure anisotropy persists for a f…
We consider one-loop effective action of SU(3) QCD with a most general constant chromomagnetic (chromoelectric) background which has two independent Abelian field components. The effective potential with a pure magnetic background has a local minimum only when two Abelian components H_{μν}^3 and H_{μν}^8 of color magnetic field are orthogonal to each other. The non-trivial structure of the effective action has important implication in estimating quark-gluon production rate and p_T-distribution in quark-gluon plasma. In general the production rate depends on three independent Casimir invariants…
The one-loop polarization operator of neutral gluons in the background constant Abelian isotopic, $H_{3}$, and hypercharge, $H_{8}$, chromomagnetic fields combined with $A_0$ electrostatic potential at high temperature is calculated. The case when $A_0=0$ is investigated separately. The proper time method is applied. It is found that neutral gluons do not acquire magnetic masses in the background fields, in contrast to the charged ones. The application of the results are discussed.
We investigate the confinement-deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature of the SU(3) Yang-Mills(YM) theory on the lattice from a viewpoint of the dual superconductor picture based on the novel reformulation of the YM theory. In particular, we compare the conventional Abelian dual superconductor picture with the non-Abelian dual superconductor picture proposed in our previous works as the mechanism of quark confinement in the SU(3) YM theory. For the SU(3) YM theory, the reformulation allows two possible options called maximal and minimal. The maximal option corresponds to the manif…
We propose the reformulations of the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory toward quark confinement and mass gap. In fact, we have given a new framework for reformulating the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory using new field variables. This includes the preceding works given by Cho, Faddeev and Niemi, as a special case called the maximal option in our reformulations. The advantage of our reformulations is that the original non-Abelian gauge field variables can be changed into the new field variables such that one of them called the restricted field gives the dominant contribution to quark confinement in the gauge…
We propose a simple way to test the Abelian decomposition of QCD, the existence of two types of gluons, experimentally at LHC. The Abelian decomposition decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and colored chromons gauge independently. This refines the Feynman diagram in a way that the color conservation is explicit, and generalizes the quark model to the quark and chromon model. We predict that the neuron jet has the color factor 3/4 and has a sharpest jet radius and smallest particle multiplicity, while the chromon jet with the color factor 9/4 remains the broadest jet. Moreover, t…
We present a new method to obtain spectral properties of a non-Abelian gauge theory in the region where occupation numbers are high. The method to measure the (single-particle) spectral function is based on linear response theory and classical-statistical lattice simulations. Although we apply it to a system far from equilibrium in a self-similar regime, the extracted spectral function can be understood within the hard thermal loop (HTL) formalism and can thus be connected to thermal equilibrium at high temperatures. This allows us to obtain quantities like the lifetime of quasiparticles that …
We report on an extensive analysis of FCNC and CPV effects in SUSY theories. We present results for Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 processes governed by b --> s transitions both in the low and high tanbeta regime, focussing in particular on S_psi_phi, the phase of Bs mixing. We emphasize that while the MFV framework is not suited to explain potentially large effects in S_psi_phi as indicated by recent data from CDF and D0, models with large right-right mass insertions in the 32 sector provide natural frameworks to account for such effects. Exemplarily we consider two SUSY models based on an abelian a…
We explore the influence of an anomalous chromomagnetic moment, $κ$, onthe production characteristics of top quark pairs at the Tevatron. We find that for top quarks in the 170 GeV mass range, present searches are probing values of $κ$ of order ${1 \over 3}$. For $κ$'s in this range we find that significant enhancements in the both the $q \bar q,~gg \to t \bar t$ production cross sections are obtained. Once top has been verified and QCD uncertainties are under control, future high statistics measurements at the Tevatron will eventually be sensitive to values of $κ$ with magnitudes smaller than…
We suggest that a spin-charge separating ansatz, leading to non-Abelian $SU(2) \otimes U_S(1)$ gauge symmetries in doped antiferromagnets, proposed earlier as a way of describing Kosterlitz-Thouless superconducting gaps at the nodes of the gap of d-wave (high-T_c) superconductors, may also lead to a pseudogap phase, characterised by the formation of (non-superconducting) pairing and the absence of phase coherence. The crucial assumption is again the presence of electrically charged Dirac fermionic excitations (holons) about the points of the (putative) fermi surface in the pertinent phase of t…
Motivated by the Xenon1T excess in electron-recoil measurements, we investigate the prospects of probing axion-like particles (ALP) in lepton flavor violation experiments. In particular, we identify such ALP as a pseudo-Goldstone from the spontaneous breaking of the flavor symmetries that explain the mixing structure of the Standard Model leptons. We present the case of the flavor symmetries being a non-Abelian U(2) and the ALP originating from its U(1) subgroup, which is anomaly-free with the Standard Model group. We build two explicit realistic examples that reproduce leptonic masses and mix…
We investigate the phenomenology of new abelian gauge bosons, which we denote as $X$ bosons, that suffer a mixed anomaly with the Standard Model, but are made self-consistent by the Green-Schwarz mechanism. A distinguishing aspect of the resulting effective theory is the decay of $X$ bosons into Standard Model gauge bosons, $X\to ZZ, WW, γZ$. We compute the production cross-section of the $X$ boson from vector boson fusion at the Large Hadron Collider. We study the $pp\to X\to ZZ\to 4l$ signal, and analyze the prospects of discovery. We argue that such a discovery could indirectly probe high e…
Non-Abelian discrete symmetries provide an interesting opportunity to address the flavor puzzle in the lepton sector. However, the number of currently viable models based on such symmetries is rather large. High-precision measurements of the leptonic mixing parameters by future neutrino experiments, including ESSnuSB, T2HK, DUNE, and JUNO, will be crucial to test such models. We show that the complementarity among these experiments offers a powerful tool for narrowing down this broad class of lepton flavor models.
A dark sector -- a new non-Abelian gauge group Higgsed or confined near the GeV scale -- can be spectacularly probed in low-energy e+e- collisions. A low-mass dark sector can explain the annual modulation signal reported by DAMA/LIBRA and the PAMELA, ATIC, and INTEGRAL observations by generating small mass splittings and new interactions for weak-scale dark matter. Some of these observations may be the first signs of a low-mass dark sector that collider searches can definitively confirm. Production and decay of O(GeV)-mass dark states is mediated by a Higgsed Abelian gauge boson that mixes kin…
For relativistic quantum field theories, we consider Lorentz breaking, spatially homogeneous field configurations or states that evolve in time along a symmetry direction. We dub this situation "spontaneous symmetry probing" (SSP). We mainly focus on internal symmetries, i.e. on symmetries that commute with the Poincare group. We prove that the fluctuations around SSP states have a Lagrangian that is explicitly time independent, and we provide the field space parameterization that makes this manifest. We show that there is always a gapless Goldstone excitation that perturbs the system in the d…
We propose a novel probe of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter (DM) candidates of a wide mass range which fall short of the required annihilation rates to satisfy correct thermal relic abundance, dubbed as \textit{Miracle-less WIMP}. If the DM interactions are mediated by an Abelian gauge boson like B-L, its annihilation rates typically remain smaller than the WIMP ballpark for very high scale B-L symmetry breaking, leading to overproduction. The thermally overproduced relic is brought within observed limits via late entropy dilution from one of the three right handed neutr…
The shift-symmetric coupling of a pseudo-scalar particle driving inflation to gauge fields provides a unique way of probing cosmic inflation. We show for an SU(2) gauge group how a classical isotropic background gauge field develops from the standard quantum mechanical vacuum in the far past. Over the course of inflation, the theory dynamically evolves from an approximately abelian regime into an inherently non-abelian regime, with distinct predictions for the scalar and tensor power spectra. The latter regime closely resembles a setup known as chromo-natural inflation, although our main focus…
