Ultrasoft colloidal particle fluctuates due to its flexibility. Such fluctuation is essential for colloidal structure and dynamics, but is challenging to quantify experimentally. We use dendrimers as a model system to study the fluctuation of ultrasoft colloids. By considering the dynamic polydispersity in the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) model, and introducing the fluctuation of invasive water into the contrast in SANS, we reveal the fluctuating amplitudes of the size and shape of the dendrimer of generation 6 at finite concentrations. The size fluctuation is suppressed while the shape fluctuation increases as the weight fraction of dendrimers passes 11%. With neutron spin echo data, we suggest that such crossover originates from the competition between the inter- and intra-particle dynamics. Further investigation on lower-generation samples shows a contrary result, which suggests a structural basis for these dynamic phenomena.
Ultrasoft colloids typically do not spontaneously crystallize, but rather vitrify, at high concentrations. Combining in-situ rheo-SANS experiments and numerical simulations we show that shear facilitates crystallization of colloidal star polymers in the vicinity of their glass transition. With increasing shear rate well beyond rheological yielding, a transition is found from an initial bcc-dominated structure to an fcc-dominated one. This crystal-to-crystal transition is not accompanied by intermediate melting but occurs via a sudden reorganization of the crystal structure. Our results provide…
We use theory and simulations to investigate the existence of amorphous glassy states in ultrasoft colloids. We combine the hyper-netted chain approximation with mode-coupling theory to study the dynamic phase diagram of soft repulsive spheres interacting with a Hertzian potential, focusing on low temperatures and large densities. At constant temperature, we find that an amorphous glassy state is entered upon compression, as in colloidal hard spheres, but the glass unexpectedly melts when density increases further. We attribute this re-entrant fluid-glass transition to particle softness, and c…
The structural and dynamical properties of ultra-soft colloids - star polymers - exposed to a uniform external force field are analyzed applying the multiparticle collision dynamics approach, a hybrid coarse-grain mesoscale simulation approach, which captures thermal fluctuations and long-range hydrodynamic interactions. In the weak field limit, the structure of the star polymer is nearly unchanged, however in an intermediate regime, the radius of gyration decreases, in particular transverse to the sedimentation direction. In the limit of a strong field, the radius of gyration increases with f…
We investigate the dynamics of kinetically frozen block copolymer micelles of different softness across a wide range of particle concentrations, from the fluid to the onset of glassy behavior, through a combination of rheology, dynamic light scattering and pulsed field gradient NMR spectroscopy. We additionally perform Brownian dynamics simulations based on an ultrasoft coarse-grained potential, which are found to be in quantitative agreement with experiments, capturing even the very details of dynamic structure factors S(Q, t) on approaching the glass transition. We provide evidence that for …
We have investigated the slow dynamics of ultrasoft particles in crystalline cluster phases, where point particles interact through the generalized exponential potential u(r) = ε\exp[-(r/σ)^n], focusing on the cluster fcc phase of this model with n=4. In an effort to elucidate how the mechanisms of mass transport depend on the microscopic dynamics and in order to mimic a realistic scenario in a related experiment we have performed molecular dynamics, Brownian dynamics, and Monte Carlo simulations. In molecular dynamics simulations the diffusion of particles proceeds through long-range jumps, g…
By means of extensive simulations, we investigate concentrated solutions of globular single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs), an emergent class of synthetic soft nano-objects. By increasing the concentration, the SCNPs show a reentrant behaviour in their structural and dynamical correlations, as well as a soft caging regime and weak dynamic heterogeneity. The latter is confirmed by validation of the Stokes-Einstein relation up to concentrations far beyond the overlap density. Therefore SCNPs arise as a new class of soft colloids, exhibiting slow dynamics and actualizing in a real system structural …
We numerically investigate slow dynamics of a binary mixture of ultrasoft particles interacting with the generalized Hertzian potential. If the softness parameter, $α$, is small, the particles at high densities start penetrating each other, form clusters, and eventually undergo the glass transition. We find multiple cluster-glass phases characterized by different number of particles per cluster, whose boundary lines are sharply separated by the cluster size. Anomalous logarithmic slow relaxation of the density correlation functions is observed in the vicinity of these glass-glass phase boundar…
We explore the glassy dynamics of soft colloids using microgels and charged particles interacting by steric and screened Coulomb interactions, respectively. In the supercooled regime, the structural relaxation time $τ_α$ of both systems grows steeply with volume fraction, reminiscent of the behavior of colloidal hard spheres. Computer simulations confirm that the growth of $τ_α$ on approaching the glass transition is independent of particle softness. By contrast, softness becomes relevant at very large packing fractions when the system falls out of equilibrium. In this non-equilibrium regime, …
Fluctuations in fluid velocity and fluctuations in electric fields may both give rise to forces acting on small particles in colloidal suspensions. Such forces in part determine the thermodynamic stability of the colloid. At the classical statistical thermodynamic level, the fluid velocity and electric field contributions to the forces are comparable in magnitude. When quantum fluctuation effects are taken into account, the electric fluctuation induced van der Waals forces dominate those induced by purely fluid mechanical motions. The physical principles are applied in detail for the case of c…
We report experimental measurements of particle dynamics in a colloidal glass in order to understand the dynamical heterogeneities associated with the cooperative motion of the particles in the glassy regime. We study the local and global fluctuation of correlation and response functions in an aging colloidal glass. The observables display universal scaling behavior following a modified power-law, with a plateau dominating the less heterogeneous short-time regime and a power-law tail dominating the highly heterogeneous long-time regime.
Stress relaxation in crystalline solids is mediated by the formation and diffusion of defects. While it is well established how externally-generated stresses relax, through the proliferation and motion of dislocations in the lattice, it remains relatively unknown how crystals cope with internal stresses. We investigate, both experimentally and in simulations, how highly localized stresses relax in two-dimensional soft colloidal crystals. When a single particle is actively excited, by means of optical tweezing, a rich variety of highly collective stress relaxation mechanisms results. These mani…
We calculate the effective force mediated by thermally excited capillary waves between spherical or disklike colloids trapped at a fluid interface. This Casimir type interaction is shown to depend sensitively on the boundary conditions imposed at the three-phase contact line. For large distances between the colloids an unexpected cancellation of attractive and repulsive contributions is observed leading to a fluctuation force which decays algebraically very rapidly. For small separations the resulting force is rather strong and it may play an important role in two-dimensional colloid aggregati…
We study edge fluctuations of a flat colloidal membrane comprised of a monolayer of aligned filamentous viruses. Experiments reveal that a peak in the spectrum of the in-plane edge fluctuations arises for sufficiently strong virus chirality. Accounting for internal liquid crystalline degrees of freedom by the length, curvature, and geodesic torsion of the edge, we calculate the spectrum of the edge fluctuations. The theory quantitatively describes the experimental data, demonstrating that chirality couples in-plane and out-of-plane edge fluctuations to produce the peak.
A general theory of nucleation for colloids and macromolecules in solution is formulated within the context of fluctuating hydrodynamics. A formalism for the determination of nucleation pathways is developed and stochastic differential equations for the evolution of order parameters are given. The conditions under which the elements of Classical Nucleation Theory are recovered are determined. The theory provides a justification and extension of more heuristic equilibrium approaches based solely on the free energy. It is illustrated by application to the low-concentration/high-concentration tra…
We present measurements of the thermal fluctuations of the free surface of an aging colloidal suspension, Laponite. The technique consists in measuring the fluctuations of the position of a laser beam that reflects from the free surface. Analysing the data statistics, we show that, as the fluid ages, the dynamics becomes intermittent. The intermittent events correspond to large changes in the local slope of the free surface over a few milliseconds. We show that those quakes are uncorrelated, although they are kept in memory by the surface over short time scales.
As recently reported [Turiv T. et al., Science, 2013, Vol. 342, 1351], fluctuations in the orientation of the liquid crystal (LC) director can transfer momentum from the LC to a colloid, such that the diffusion of the colloid becomes anomalous on a short time scale. Using video microscopy and single particle tracking, we investigate random thermal motion of colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal for the time scales shorter than the expected time of director fluctuations. At long times, compared to the characteristic time of the nematic director relaxation we observe typical anisotropi…
This work is devoted to the study of displacement fluctuations of micron-sized particles in an aging colloidal glass. We address the issue of the validity of the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) and the time evolution of viscoelastic properties during aging of aqueous suspensions of a clay (Laponite RG) in a colloidal glass phase. Given the conflicting results reported in the literature for different experimental techniques, our goal is to check and reconcile them using \emph{simultaneously} passive and active microrheology techniques. For this purpose we measure the thermal fluctuations …
For like charged colloidal particles two mechanisms of attraction between them survive when the interparticle distance is larger than the Debye screening length. One of them is the conventional van der Waals attraction and the second one is the attraction mechanism mediated by thermal fluctuations of particle positions. The latter is related to an effective variable mass (Euler mass) of the particle produced by a fluid motion. The most stronger attraction potential (up to the value of temperature T) corresponds to a situation of uncharged particles and a relatively large Debye screening length…
We consider the theory of fluctuations of a colloidal solid observed in a confocal slice. For a cubic crystal we study the evolution of the projected elastic properties as a function of the anisotropy of the crystal using numerical methods based on the fast Fourier transform. In certain situations of high symmetry we find exact analytic results for the projected fluctuations.
We use computer simulations to test a simple idea for mapping between long-time self diffusivities obtained from molecular and Brownian dynamics. The strategy we explore is motivated by the behavior of fluids comprising particles that interact via inverse-power-law pair potentials, which serve as good reference models for dense atomic or colloidal materials. Based on our simulation data, we present an empirical expression that semi-quantitatively describes the "atomic" to "colloidal" diffusivity mapping for inverse-power-law fluids, but also for model complex fluids with considerably softer (s…
We calculate the effective fluctuation induced force between spherical or disk-like colloids trapped at a flat, fluid interface mediated by thermally excited capillary waves. This Casimir type force is determined by the partition function of the system which in turn is calculated in a functional integral approach, where the restrictions on the capillary waves imposed by the colloids are incorporated by auxiliary fields. In the long-range regime the fluctuation induced force is shown to depend sensitively on the boundary conditions imposed at the three-phase contact line between the colloids an…
We incorporate the effects of fluctuations in a density functional analysis of the freezing of a colloidal liquid in the presence of an external potential generated by interfering laser beams. A mean field treatment, using a density functional theory, predicts that with the increase in the strength of the modulating potential, the freezing transition changes from a first order to a continuous one via a tricritical point for a suitable choice of the modulating wavevectors. We demonstrate here that the continuous nature of the freezing transition at large values of the external potential $V_{e}$…
Using memory-function formalism we show that in sheared colloidal suspensions the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for self-diffusion, i.e. Einstein's relation between self-diffusion and mobility tensors, is violated and propose a new way to measure this violation in Brownian Dynamics simulations. We derive mode-coupling expressions for the tagged particle friction tensor and for an effective, shear-rate dependent temperature.
We study experimentally the fluctuations of the injected and dissipated energy in a system of a colloidal particle trapped in a double well potential periodically modulated by an external perturbation. The work done by the external force and the dissipated energy are measured close to the stochastic resonance where the injected power is maximum. We show that the steady state fluctuation theorem holds in this system.
In this paper, we investigate experimentally the non-equilibrium steady state of an active colloidal suspension under gravity field. The active particles are made of chemically powered colloids, showing self propulsion in the presence of an added fuel, here hydrogen peroxide. The active suspension is studied in a dedicated microfluidic device, made of permeable gel microstructures. Both the microdynamics of individual colloids and the global stationary state of the suspension under gravity - density profiles, number fluctuations - are measured with optical microscopy. This allows to connect th…
We develop the scattering formalism to calculate the interaction between colloidal particles trapped at a fluid interface. Since, in addition to the interface, the colloids may also fluctuate in this system, we implement the fluctuation of the boundaries into the scattering formalism and investigate how the interaction between colloids is modified by their fluctuations. This general method can be applied to any number of colloids with various geometries at an interface. We apply the formalism derived in this work to a system of spherical colloids at the interface between two fluid phases. For …
We consider an ensemble of spherical colloidal particles immersed in a near-critical solvent such as a binary liquid mixture close to its critical demixing point. The emerging long-ranged fluctuations of the corresponding order parameter of the solvent drive the divergence of the correlation length. Spatial confinements of these critical fluctuations by colloidal solute particles, acting as cavities in the fluctuating medium, restrict and modify the fluctuation spectrum in a way which depends on their relative configuration. This results in effective, so-called critical Casimir forces (CCFs) a…
We apply a hybrid Molecular Dynamics and mesoscopic simulation technique to study the steady-state sedimentation of hard sphere particles for Peclet numbers (Pe) ranging from 0.08 to 12. Hydrodynamic back-flow causes a reduction of the average sedimentation velocity relative to the Stokes velocity. We find that this effect is independent of Pe number. Velocity fluctuations show the expected effects of thermal fluctuations at short correlation times. At longer times, non-equilibrium hydrodynamic fluctuations are visible, and their character appears to be independent of the thermal fluctuations.…
We study the effective interaction between two ellipsoidal particles at the interface of two fluid phases which are mediated by thermal fluctuations of the interface. In this system the restriction of the long--ranged interface fluctuations by particles gives rise to fluctuation--induced forces which are equivalent to interactions of Casimir type and which are anisotropic in the interface plane. Since the position and the orientation of the colloids with respect to the interface normal may also fluctuate, this system is an example for the Casimir effect with fluctuating boundary conditions. In…
We discuss the phenomenon of spontaneous self-compactification in a model colloidal system, proposed in a recent work on DNA-mediated self-assembly. We focus on the effect of thermal fluctuations on the stability of membrane-like self-assembled phase with in-plane square order. Surprisingly, the fluctuations are shown to enhance the stability of this quasi-2D phase with respect to transition to alternative 3D structures.
We use time-resolved X-Photon Correlation Spectroscopy to investigate the slow dynamics of colloidal gels made of moderately attractive carbon black particles. We show that the slow dynamics is temporally heterogeneous and quantify its fluctuations by measuring the variance $χ$ of the instantaneous intensity correlation function. The amplitude of dynamical fluctuations has a non-monotonic dependence on scattering vector $q$, in stark contrast with recent experiments on strongly attractive colloidal gels [Duri and Cipelletti, \textit{Europhys. Lett.} \textbf{76}, 972 (2006)]. We propose a simpl…
We investigate the structure and equilibrium linear-response dynamics of suspensions of hard colloidal dumbbells using Brownian Dynamics computer simulations. The focus lies on the dense fluid and plastic crystal states of the colloids with investigated aspect (elongation-to-diameter) ratios varying from the hard sphere limit up to 0.39, which is roughly the stability limit of the plastic crystal phase. We find expected structural changes with larger elongation with respect to the hard sphere reference case and very localized orientational correlations, typically just involving next-neighbor c…
We consider a colloidal particle immersed in an active bath and derive a Smoluchowski equation that governs the dynamics of colloidal particle. We address this as active Smoluchowski equation. Our analysis based on this active Smoluchowski equation shows a short time superdiffusive behavior that strongly depends on the activity. Our model also predicts a non-monotonic dependence of mean energy dissipation against time, a signature of activity-induced dynamics. By introducing a frequency-dependent effective temperature, we show that the mean rate of entropy production is time dependent unlike a…
Slow long-lived fluctuations of mechanical properties of drying drops of instant coffee water solutions have been found by means of the Drying Drop Technology developed earlier. Parameters of the fluctuations depended on the extent of dilution and were not affected by additional hashing of the solution, closing by a cover and shielding from external electromagnetic fields [1-3]. Here we compared dynamics of physicochemical and morphological processes in bulk. We observed microscopically periodic emergence, growth, aggregation and disappearance of spherical cavities (50-250 micrometers in diame…
Although buckling is a prime route to achieve functionalization and synthesis of single colloids, buckling of colloidal structures---made up of multiple colloids---remains poorly studied. Here, we investigate the buckling of the simplest form of a colloidal structure, a colloidal chain that is self-assembled through critical Casimir forces. We demonstrate that the mechanical instability of such a chain is strikingly reminiscent of that of classical Euler buckling but with thermal fluctuations and plastic effects playing a significant role. Namely, we find that fluctuations tend to diverge clos…
This paper has been temporarily withdrawn by the authors. We have recently found that noise in the experiments is at the origin of the supposed "back-and-forth" motion which is discussed in the first version of the paper. As a consequence, figs 4 and 5 as well as their discussion are incorrect. Figure 1 and the general trend of fig. 2 are still valid. At this time, we are uncertain whether or not the short time behavior of cI, shown in fig. 3, is affected by measurement noise. We are working on a new version of the paper, using new techniques that allow us to correct for the experimental noise…
The emergence of particle irreversibility in periodically driven colloidal suspensions has been interpreted as resulting either from a nonequilibrium phase transition to an absorbing state or from the chaotic nature of particle trajectories. Using a simple model of a driven suspension we show that a nonequilibrium phase transition is accompanied by hyperuniform static density fluctuations in the vicinity of the transition, where we also observe strong dynamic heterogeneities reminiscent of dynamics in glassy materials. We find that single particle dynamics becomes intermittent and strongly non…
We provide a direct experimental test of the Stokes-Einstein relation as a special case of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) in an aging colloidal glass. The use of combined active and passive microrheology allows us to independently measure both the correlation and response functions in this non-equilibrium situation. Contrary to previous reports, we find no deviations from the FDT over several decades in frequency (1 Hz-10 kHz) and for all aging times. In addition, we find two distinct viscoelastic contributions in the aging glass, including a nearly elastic response at low frequenci…
We study the response of single nanosized spherical colloids in electrolyte solution to an alternating electric field (AC field) by computer simulations. We use a coarse-grained mesoscopic simulation approach that accounts in full for hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions as well as for thermal fluctuations. The solvent is modeled as a fluid of single Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) beads, and the colloidal particle is modeled as a rigid body made of DPD beads. We compute the mobility and the polarizability of a single colloid and investigate systematically the effect of amplitude an…
We study the thermal fluctuations of an optically confined probe particle, suspended in an aging colloidal suspension, as the suspension transforms from a viscous liquid into an elastic glass. The micron-sized bead forms a harmonic oscillator. By monitoring the equal-time fluctuations of the tracer, at two different laser powers, we determine the temperature of the oscillator, $T_{\text{o}}$. In the ergodic liquid the temperatures of the oscillator and its environment are equal while, in contrast, in a nonequilibrium glassy phase we find that $T_{\text{o}}$ substantially exceeds the bath tempe…
The fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR), a fundamental result of equilibrium statistical physics, ceases to be valid when a system is taken out of the equilibrium. A generalization of FDR has been theoretically proposed for out-of-equilibrium systems: the kinetic temperature entering FDR is substituted by a time-scale dependent effective temperature. We combine the measurements of the correlation function of the rotational dynamics of colloidal particles obtained via dynamic light scattering with those of the birefringence response to study the generalized FDR in an off-equilibrium clay sus…
We present a framework to segregate the roles of elastic and non-elastic deformations in the examination of real-space experiments of solid-solid Martensitic transitions. The Martensitic transformation of a body-centred-tetragonal(BCT) to a body-centred-orthorhombic(BCO) crystal structure has been studied in a model system of micron-scale ionic microgel colloids. Non-affine fluctuations, i.e., displacement fluctuations that do not arise from purely elastic(affine) deformations, are detected in particle configurations acquired from the experiment. Tracking these fluctuations serves as a highly …
Molecular motors are essential to the living, they generate additional fluctuations that boost transport and assist assembly. Self-propelled colloids, that consume energy to move, hold similar potential for the man-made assembly of microparticles. Yet, experiments showing their use as a powerhouse in materials science lack. Our work explores the design of man-made materials controlled by fluctuations, arising from the internal forces generated by active colloids. Here we show a massive acceleration of the annealing of a monolayer of passive beads by moderate addition of self-propelled micropar…
Spatial correlations of microscopic fluctuations are investigated via real-space experiments and computer simulations of colloidal glasses under steady shear. It is shown that while the distribution of one-particle fluctuations is always isotropic regardless of the relative importance of shear as compared to thermal fluctuations, their spatial correlations show a marked sensitivity to the competition between shear-induced and thermally activated relaxation. Correlations are isotropic in the thermally dominated regime, but develop strong anisotropy as shear dominates the dynamics of microscopic…
Dimensionality strongly affects thermal fluctuations and critical dynamics of equilibrium systems. These influences persist in amorphous systems going through the nonequilibrium glass transition. Here, we experimentally study the glass transition of quasi-2D suspensions of spherical and ellipsoidal particles under different degrees of circular confinement. We show that the strength of the long-wavelength fluctuations increases logarithmically with system sizes and displays the signature of the Mermin-Wagner fluctuations. Moreover, using confinement as a tool, we also measure static structural …
Theory and simulation of Brownian colloids suspended in an implicit solvent, with the hydrodynamics of the fluid accounted for by effective interactions between the colloids, are shown to yield a marked and hitherto unobserved discrepancy between the viscosity calculated from the average shear stress under an imposed shear rate in the Stokesian regime and the viscosity extracted by the Green-Kubo formalism from the auto-correlations of thermal stress fluctuations in quiescent equilibrium. We show that agreement between both methods is recovered by accounting for the fluctuating Brownian stress…
We present a new method based on the scattering technique to investigate fluctuation-induced forces at a fluid interface. The scattering approach, well suited to the study of many body systems of arbitrary geometries, is augmented to include boundary fluctuations. Using this method, we study the deviation of the total fluctuation-induced interaction from the sum of pairwise energies for three colloidal particles. We consider both frozen and fluctuating colloids and obtain a very good agreement between analytical and numerical results. We find a marked difference in the three body fluctuation-i…
Coarse-graining atomic displacements in a solid produces both local affine strains and "non-affine" fluctuations. Here we study the equilibrium dynamics of these coarse grained quantities to obtain space-time dependent correlation functions. We show how a subset of these thermally excited, non-affine fluctuations act as precursors for the nucleation of lattice defects and suggest how defect probabilities may be altered by an {\it experimentally realisable} "external" field conjugate to the global non-affinity parameter. Our results are amenable to verification in experiments on colloidal cryst…
To describe the full spectrum of surface fluctuations of the interface between phase-separated colloid-polymer mixtures from low scattering vector q (classical capillary wave theory) to high q (bulk-like fluctuations), one must take account of the interface's bending rigidity. We find that the bending rigidity is negative and that on approach to the critical point it vanishes proportionally to the interfacial tension. Both features are in agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.
Fluctuations of the interface between coexisting colloidal fluid phases have been measured with confocal microscopy. Due to a very low surface tension, the thermal motions of the interface are so slow, that a record can be made of the positions of the interface. The theory of the interfacial height fluctuations is developed. For a host of correlation functions, the experimental data are compared with the theoretical expressions. The agreement between theory and experiment is remarkably good.
Studying the jamming transition of granular and colloidal systems, has lead to a proliferation of theoretical and numerical results formulated in the language of the eigenspectrum of the dynamical matrix for these disordered system. Only recently however, these modes have been accessed experimentally in colloidal and granular media, computing the eigenmodes of the covariance matrix of the particle positions. At the same time new conceptual and methodological questions have appeared, regarding the interpretation of these results. In the present paper, we first give an overview of the theoretica…
Depletion interactions between colloidal particles dispersed in a fluid medium are effective interactions induced by the presence of other types of colloid. They are not instantaneous but build up in time. We show by means Brownian dynamics simulations that the fluctuations in the depletion force between two guest particles in a host dispersion of differently sized colloids do not decay exponentially with time, but show a power-law dependence. A simple scaling theory accurately describes the dependence of the magnitude of these fluctuations on time, on the inter-particle distance and on the si…
Depletion-induced interactions between colloids in colloid-polymer mixtures depend in range and strength on size, shape, and concentration of depletants. Crowding by colloids in turn affects shapes of polymer coils, such as biopolymers in biological cells. By simulating hard-sphere colloids and random-walk polymers, modeled as fluctuating ellipsoids, we compute depletion-induced potentials and polymer shape distributions. Comparing results with exact density-functional theory calculations, molecular simulations, and experiments, we show that polymer shape fluctuations play an important role in…
Transitions in structural heterogeneity of colloidal depletion gels formed through short-range attractive interactions are correlated with their dynamical arrest. The system is a density and refractive index matched suspension of 0.20 volume fraction poly(methyl methacyrlate) colloids with the non-adsorbing depletant polystyrene added at a size ratio of depletant to colloid of 0.043. As the strength of the short-range attractive interaction is increased, clusters become increasingly structurally heterogeneous, as characterized by number-density fluctuations, and dynamically immobilized, as cha…
The structure and the statistical fluctuations of interfaces between coexisting phases in the Asakura-Oosawa (AO) model for a colloid--polymer mixture are analyzed by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We make use of a recently developed grand canonical cluster move with an additional constraint stabilizing the existence of two interfaces in the (rectangular) box that is simulated. Choosing very large systems, of size LxLxD with L=60 and D=120, measured in units of the colloid radius, the spectrum of capillary wave-type interfacial excitations is analyzed in detail. The local position of the i…
We simulate a colloid with charge q_d driven through a disordered assembly of interacting colloids with charge q and show that, for q_d \approx q, the velocity-force relation is nonlinear and the velocity fluctuations of the driven particle are highly intermittent with a 1/f characteristic. When q_d >> q, the average velocity ddrops, the velocity force relation becomes linear, and the velocity fluctuations are Gaussian. We discuss the results in terms of a crossover from strongly intermittent heterogeneous dynamics to continuum dynamics. We also make several predictions for the transient respo…
