This work is devoted to the study of displacement fluctuations of micron-sized particles in an aging colloidal glass. We address the issue of the validity of the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) and the time evolution of viscoelastic properties during aging of aqueous suspensions of a clay (Laponite RG) in a colloidal glass phase. Given the conflicting results reported in the literature for different experimental techniques, our goal is to check and reconcile them using \emph{simultaneously} passive and active microrheology techniques. For this purpose we measure the thermal fluctuations of micro-sized brownian particles immersed in the colloidal glass and trapped by optical tweezers. We find that both microrheology techniques lead to compatible results even at low frequencies and no violation of FDT is observed. Several interesting features concerning the statistical properties and the long time correlations of the particles are observed during the transition.
The primary and secondary relaxation timescales of aging colloidal suspensions of Laponite are estimated from intensity autocorrelation functions obtained in dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. The dynamical slowing down of these relaxation processes are compared with observations in fragile supercooled liquids by establishing a one-to-one mapping between the waiting time since filtration of a Laponite suspension and the inverse of the temperature of a supercooled liquid that is rapidly quenched towards its glass transition temperature. New timescales, such as the Vogel time and the Ka…
The settling dynamics of falling spheres inside a Laponite suspension is studied. Laponite is a colloidal synthetic clay that shows physical aging in aqueous suspension due to the spontaneous evolution of inter-particle electrostatic interactions. In our experiments, millimeter-sized steel balls are dropped in aqueous Laponite suspensions of different ages (i.e., time elapsed since sample preparation). The motion of the falling balls are captured using a high-speed camera and the velocities of their centroids are estimated from the images. Interestingly, we observe that balls of larger diamete…
A universal secondary relaxation process, known as the Johari-Goldstein (JG) $β$-relaxation process, appears in glass formers. It involves all parts of the molecule and is particularly important in glassy systems because of its very close relationship with the $α$-relaxation process. However, the absence of a J-G $β$-relaxation mode in colloidal glasses raises questions regarding its universality. In the present work, we study the microscopic relaxation processes in Laponite suspensions, a model soft glassy material, by dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. $α$ and $β$-relaxation timesca…
Hypothesis: Aging in colloidal suspensions manifests as a reduction in kinetic freedom of the colloids. In aqueous suspensions of charged colloids, the role of inter-particle electrostatics interactions on the aging dynamics is well debated. Despite water being the dispersion medium, the influence of water structure on the physicochemical properties of aging colloids has never been considered before. Laponite, a model hectorite clay, could be used to evaluate the relative contributions of medium structure and electrostatics in determining the physicochemical properties of aging colloidal suspe…
Effective Interaction of Charged Platelets in Aqueous Solution: Investigations of Colloid Laponite Suspensions by Static Light Scattering and Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering
Aqueous colloidal Laponite clay suspensions transform spontaneously to a soft solid-like arrested state as its aging or waiting time increases. This article reports the rapid transformation of aqueous Laponite suspensions into soft solids due to the application of a DC electric field. A substantial increase in the speed of solidification at higher electric field strengths is also observed. The electric field is applied across two parallel brass plates immersed in the Laponite suspension. The subsequent solidification that takes place on the surface of the positive electrode is attributed to th…
Aqueous suspensions of Laponite, a system composed of disk-like nanoparticles, are found to develop optical birefringence over several days, well after the suspensions solidified due to jamming. The optical anisotropy is particularly enhanced near the air Laponite suspension interface over length-scales of several millimetres, which is beyond five orders of magnitude larger than the particle length scale, suggestive of large scale ordering influenced by the interface. The orientational order increases with time and is always greater for higher concentration of salt, higher concentration of Lap…
In this work we study the aging behavior of aqueous suspension of Laponite having 2.8 weight % concentration using rheological tools. At various salt concentration all the samples demonstrate orientational order when observed using crossed polarizers. In rheological experiments we observe inherent irreversibility in the aging dynamics which forces the system not to rejuvenate to the same state in the shear melting experiment carried out at a later date since preparation. The extensive rheological experiments carried out as a function of time elapsed since preparation demonstrate the self simil…
We investigate pressure driven pipe flow of Laponite suspension, as a model thixotropic fluid. The tendency of the suspension to age is controlled by addition of sodium chloride salt to vary the ionic strength. We use a syringe pump to prescribe the flow and observe that a steady state flow is obtained. Unusually, the steady state pressure drop required to maintain a constant flow rate decreases with an increase in the flow rate, in qualitative contrast to the expectation for Poiseuille flow. We demonstrate that experimental results obtained by varying the flow rate, salt concentration, and fl…
We study aging behavior of aqueous suspension of Laponite as a function of concentration of Laponite, concentration of salt, time elapsed since preparation of suspension (idle time) and temperature by carrying extensive rheological and conductivity experiments. We observe that temporal evolution of elastic modulus, which describes structural buildup and aging, shifts to low times for experiments carried out for higher concentration of Laponite, higher concentration of salt, greater temperature and on higher idle time while preserving the curvature of evolution in the solid regime. Consequently…
Investigating microstructure of suspensions with particles having anisotropic shape that share complex interactions is a challenging task leading to competing claims. This work investigates phase behavior of one such system: aqueous Laponite suspension, which is highly contested in the literature, using rheological and microscopic tools. Remarkably, we observe that over a broad range of Laponite (1.4 to 4 weight %) and salt concentrations (0 to 7 mM), the system overwhelmingly demonstrates all the rheological characteristics of the sol-gel transition leading to a percolated network. Analysis o…
Aqueous suspensions of Laponite with discotic particles are well-studied and find a wide range of applications in industry. A new direction of their implementation is polymer composites that can exhibit improved physical properties. We have studied the aging of aqueous suspensions of Laponite and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS-Na) and both their microscopic (small-angle X-ray scattering, SAXS) and macroscopic (small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) rheometry) properties. The concentration of Laponite, $C_L$, was fixed at 2.5% wt and concentration of PSS-Na, $C_p$, was varied within 0-0.5% …
An aqueous suspension of the synthetic clay Laponite undergoes a transition from a liquid-like ergodic state to a glass-like nonergodic arrested state. In an observation that closely resembles the dynamical slowdown observed in supercooled liquids, the phenomenon of kinetic arrest in Laponite suspensions is accompanied by a growth in the $α$-relaxation time with increasing sample aging time, $t_{w}$. The ubiquitous dynamic slowdown and fragile behavior observed in glass forming liquids approaching the glass transition is typically ascribed to the growth in the size of distinct dynamical hetero…
Optical tweezers (OTs) can detect pico-Newton range forces operating on a colloidal particle trapped in a medium and have been successfully utilized to investigate complex systems with internal structures. Laponite clay particles in an aqueous medium self-assemble to form microscopic networks over time as electrostatic interactions between the particles gradually evolve in a physical aging process. We investigate the forced movements of an optically trapped micron-sized colloidal probe particle, suspended in an aging Laponite suspension, as the underlying Laponite microstructures gradually dev…
Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements were performed on colloidal suspensions of Laponite\textsuperscript{\textregistered} at different concentrations in the range $C_\text{w}= (1.5÷3.0)$%. The slowing down of the dynamics induced by aging was monitored by following the temporal evolution of autocorrelation functions at different concentrations towards the gel and glass transition. Exploiting analogies with supercooled liquids approaching their glass transitions, an Angell plot for the structural relaxation times was drawn. Finally, the fragility of Laponite\textsuperscript{\textregister…
We have studied the effect of temperature on aging dynamics of laponite suspensions by carrying out the rheological oscillatory and creep experiments. We observed that at higher temperatures the mechanism responsible for aging became faster thereby shifting the evolution of elastic modulus to lower ages. Significantly, in the creep experiments, all the aging time and the temperature dependent strain data superposed to form a master curve. Possibility of such superposition suggests that the rheological behavior depends on the temperature and the aging time only through the relaxation processes …
This work discusses the sedimentation stability and aging of aqueous suspension of Laponite in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The concentration of Laponite was fixed at the constant level $C_l=2$ %wt, which corresponds to the threshold between equilibrium gel IG$_1$ and repulsive gel IG$_2$ phases. The concentration of CTAB $C_s$ was within 0-0.3 %wt. In the presence of CTAB the Laponite aqueous suspensions were unstable against sedimentation and they separated out into upper and bottom layers (U- and B-layers, respectively). The dynamic light scattering technique revea…
Aqueous dispersion of Laponite, when exposed to carbon dioxide environment leads to in situ inducement of magnesium and lithium ions, which is, however absent when dispersion is exposed to air. Consequently, in the rheological experiments, Laponite dispersion preserved under carbon dioxide shows more spectacular enhancement in the elastic and viscous moduli as a function of time compared to that exposed to air. By measuring concentration of all the ions present in a dispersion as well as change in pH, the evolving inter-particle interactions among the Laponite particles is estimated. DLVO anal…
In this paper we study deformation, failure and breakage of visco-elastic thin films of aging laponite suspension under tensile deformation field. Aqueous suspension of laponite is known to undergo waiting time dependent evolution of its micro-structure, also known as aging, which is accompanied by an increase in the elastic modulus and relaxation time. In the velocity controlled tensile deformation experiments, we observed that the dependence of force and dissipated energy on velocity and initial thickness of the film is intermediate to a Newtonian fluid and a yield stress fluid. For a fixed …
Glasses behave as solids due to their long relaxation time; however the origin of this slow response remains a puzzle. Growing dynamic length scales due to cooperative motion of particles are believed to be central to the understanding of both the slow dynamics and the emergence of rigidity. Here, we provide experimental evidence of a growing dynamical heterogeneity length scale that increases with increasing waiting time in an aging colloidal glass of Laponite. The signature of heterogeneity in the dynamics follows from dynamic light scattering measurements in which we study both the rotation…
We study diffusion of heat in an aqueous suspension of disc shaped nanoparticles of Laponite, which has finite elasticity and paste-like consistency, by using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We estimate the thermal diffusivity of the suspension by comparing the experimentally obtained temperature distribution to that with analytical solution. We observe that despite highly constrained Brownian diffusivity of particles owing to its soft glassy nature, suspensions at very small concentrations of Laponite demonstrates significant enhancement in thermal diffusivity. We correlate the observed enha…
We investigate physical origin of ergodicity breaking in an aqueous colloidal dispersion of synthetic hectorite clay, LAPONITE(R), by performing dissolution and rheological experiments with monovalent salt and tetrasodium pyrophosphate solution. We also study the effect of interface, nitrogen and paraffin oil on the same. Dissolution experiments carried out for dispersions with both the interfaces show similar results. However, for samples with nitrogen interface, all the effects are observed to get expedited in time compared to paraffin oil interface. When kept in contact with water, 1.5 wt. …
This is a comment on the recent letter by Wang and Brady on "Constant stress and pressure rheology of colloidal suspensions", Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 158301 (2015).
We study the phase behavior of colloidal suspensions the solvents of which are considered to be binary liquid mixtures undergoing phase segregation. We focus on the thermodynamic region close to the critical point of the accompanying miscibility gap. There, due to the colloidal particles acting as cavities in the critical medium, the spatial confinements of the critical fluctuations of the corresponding order parameter result in the effective, so-called critical Casimir forces between the colloids. Employing an approach in terms of effective, one-component colloidal systems, we explore the pos…
The deviatoric stresses of colloidal suspensions are routinely calculated using the expression introduced by Batchelor [J. Fluid Mech. 83, 97--117 (1977)]. We show by example that the central feature in its derivation, the thermodynamic force driving particles down the density gradient, is inconsistent with the motion of the colloids. A new expression for the stress is proposed.
A model of shear thickening in dense suspensions of Brownian soft sphere colloidal particles is established. It suggests that shear thickening in soft sphere suspensions can be interpreted as a shear induced phase transition. Based on a Landau model of the coagulation transition of stabilized colloidal particles, taking the coupling between order parameter fluctuations and the local strain-field into account, the model suggests the occurrence of clusters of coagulated particles (subcritical bubbles) by applying a continuous shear perturbation. The critical shear stress of shear thickening in so…
We have studied the tensile deformation behaviour of thin films of aging aqueous suspension of Laponite, a model soft glassy material, when subjected to a creep flow field generated by a constant engineering normal stress. Aqueous suspension of Laponite demonstrates aging behaviour wherein it undergoes time dependent enhancement of its elastic modulus as well as its characteristic relaxation time. However, under application of the normal stress, the rate of aging decreases and in the limit of high stress, the aging stops with the suspension now undergoing a plastic deformation. Overall, it is …
Using a novel bi-axial confocal rheoscope, we investigate the structure and rheology of sheared colloidal suspensions under confinement. Consistent with previous work [X. Cheng \textit{et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A.}, 2011, 109, 63], we observe a vorticity-aligned string phase in moderate concentrated colloidal suspensions under uniaxial shear. Using bi-axial shear protocols, we directly manipulate the orientation and morphology of the string structures. Simultaneously, we measure the suspension rheology along both the flow and vorticity directions with a bi-axial force measurement de…
We show that the shear-induced solidification of dilute charge-stabilized (DLVO) colloids is due to the interplay between the shear-induced formation and breakage of large non-Brownian clusters. While their size is limited by breakage, their number density increases with the shearing-time. Upon flow cessation, the dense packing of clusters interconnects into a rigid state by means of grainy bonds, each involving a large number of primary colloidal bonds. The emerging picture of shear-driven solidification in dilute colloidal suspensions combines the gelation of Brownian systems with the jammin…
Using Brownian dynamics simulations we perform a systematic investigation of the shear-induced migration of colloidal particles subject to Poiseuille flow in both cylindrical and planar geometry. We find that adding an attractive component to the interparticle interaction enhances the migration effect, consistent with recent simulation studies of platelet suspensions. Monodisperse, bidisperse and polydisperse systems are studied over a range of shear rates, considering both steady states and the transient dynamics arising from the onset of flow. For bidisperse and polydisperse systems size seg…
We study the fingering instability of the interface between two miscible fluids, a colloidal suspension and its own solvent. The temporal evolution of the interface in a Hele-Shaw cell is found to be governed by the competition between the non-linear viscosity of the suspension and an off-equilibrium, effective surface tension $Γ_e$. By studying suspensions in a wide range of volume fractions, $Φ_\mathrm{C}$, we show that $Γ_e \sim Φ_\mathrm{C}^2$, in agreement with Korteweg's theory for miscible fluids. The surface tension exhibits an anomalous increase with particle size, which we account fo…
Using grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations we investigate the impact of charged walls on the crystallization properties of charged colloidal suspensions confined between these walls. The investigations are based on an effective model focussing on the colloids alone. Our results demonstrate that the fluid-wall interaction stemming from charged walls has a crucial impact on the fluid's high-density behavior as compared to the case of uncharged walls. In particular, based on an analysis of in-plane bond order parameters we find surface-charge-induced freezing and melting transitions.
We compute the electrostatic potential at the surface, or zeta potential $ζ$, of a charged particle embedded in a colloidal suspension using a hybrid mesoscopic model. We show that for weakly perturbing electric fields, the value of $ζ$ obtained at steady state during electrophoresis is statistically indistinguishable from $ζ$ in thermodynamic equilibrium. We quantify the effect of counterions concentration on $ζ$. We also evaluate the relevance of the lattice resolution for the calculation of $ζ$ and discuss how to identify the effective electrostatic radius.
We investigate the stress relaxation behavior on the application of step strains to aging aqueous suspensions of the synthetic clay Laponite. The stress exhibits a two-step decay, from which the slow relaxation modes are extracted as functions of the sample ages and applied step strain deformations. Interestingly, the slow time scales that we estimate show a dramatic enhancement with increasing strain amplitudes. We argue that the system ends up exploring the deeper sections of its energy landscape following the application of the step strain.
A theory is presented for the onset of shear thickening in colloidal suspensions of particles, stabilized by an electrostatic repulsion. Based on an activation model a critical shear stress can be derived for the onset of shear thickening in dense suspensions for a constant potential and a constant charge approach of the spheres. Unlike previous models the total interaction potential is taken into account (sum of attraction and repulsion). The critical shear stress is related to the maximum of the total interaction potential scaled by the free volume per particle. A comparison with experimenta…
Colloidal particles are often seen as big atoms that can be directly observed in real space. They are therefore playing an increasingly important role as model systems to study processes of interest in condensed matter physics such as melting, freezing and glass transitions. The solidification of colloidal suspensions has long been a puzzling phenomenon with many unexplained features. Here we demonstrate and rationalize the existence of instability and metastability domains in cellular solidification of colloidal suspensions, by direct in situ high-resolution X-ray radiography and tomography o…
