We have studied the tensile deformation behaviour of thin films of aging aqueous suspension of Laponite, a model soft glassy material, when subjected to a creep flow field generated by a constant engineering normal stress. Aqueous suspension of Laponite demonstrates aging behaviour wherein it undergoes time dependent enhancement of its elastic modulus as well as its characteristic relaxation time. However, under application of the normal stress, the rate of aging decreases and in the limit of high stress, the aging stops with the suspension now undergoing a plastic deformation. Overall, it is observed that the aging that occurs over short creep times at small normal stresses is same as the aging that occurs over long creep times at large normal stresses. This observation allows us to suggest an aging time - process time - normal stress superposition principle, which can predict rheological behaviour at longer times by carrying out short time tests.
In this paper we study deformation, failure and breakage of visco-elastic thin films of aging laponite suspension under tensile deformation field. Aqueous suspension of laponite is known to undergo waiting time dependent evolution of its micro-structure, also known as aging, which is accompanied by an increase in the elastic modulus and relaxation time. In the velocity controlled tensile deformation experiments, we observed that the dependence of force and dissipated energy on velocity and initial thickness of the film is intermediate to a Newtonian fluid and a yield stress fluid. For a fixed …
In this work, we study ageing behavior of aqueous laponite suspension, a model soft glassy material, in creep. We observe that viscoelastic behavior is time dependent and is strongly influenced by the deformation field; the effect is known to arise due to ageing and rejuvenation. We show that irrespective of strength of deformation field (shear stress) and age, when imposed time-scale is normalized with dominating relaxation mode of the system, universal ageing behavior is obtained demonstrating time-stress superposition; the phenomena that may be generic in variety of soft materials.
We have studied the effect of temperature on aging dynamics of laponite suspensions by carrying out the rheological oscillatory and creep experiments. We observed that at higher temperatures the mechanism responsible for aging became faster thereby shifting the evolution of elastic modulus to lower ages. Significantly, in the creep experiments, all the aging time and the temperature dependent strain data superposed to form a master curve. Possibility of such superposition suggests that the rheological behavior depends on the temperature and the aging time only through the relaxation processes …
In this work we investigate creep flow of aqueous suspension of Laponite, a model soft glassy material, at different aging times and stresses. We observe that this system shows time - aging time - stress superposition over a range of aging times and stresses when real time scale is transformed into effective time scale. Existence of superposition in an effective time domain facilitates prediction of long and very short time rheological behavior. Analysis of the observed behavior from effective time approach suggests that superposition is possible only when the shape of a relaxation time spectr…
In this work, we investigate signatures of physical aging in an aqueous dispersion of Carbopol that shows yield stress and weak enhancement in elastic modulus as a function of time. We observe that the creep curves, as well as strain recovery, show a significant dependence on waiting time elapsed since shear melting. The corrected strain, which is the strain in excess of the recovered strain, has been observed to show time waiting time superposition in the effective time domain, wherein time is normalized by time-dependent relaxation time that shows a power-law dependence. The corresponding po…
We present an effective time approach to predict long and short time rheological behavior of soft glassy materials from experiments carried out over practical time scales. Effective time approach takes advantage of relaxation time dependence on aging time that allows time-aging time superposition even when aging occurs over the experimental timescales. Interestingly experiments on variety of soft materials demonstrate that the effective time approach successfully predicts superposition for diverse aging regimes ranging from sub-aging to hyper-aging behaviors. This approach can also be used to …
Aging amorphous polymeric materials undergo free volume relaxation, which causes slowing down of the relaxation dynamics as a function of time. The resulting time dependency poses difficulties in predicting their long time physical behavior. In this work, we apply effective time domain approach to the experimental data on aging amorphous polymers and demonstrate that it enables prediction of long time behavior over the extraordinary time scales. We demonstrate that, unlike the conventional methods, the proposed effective time domain approach can account for physical aging that occurs over the …
The rate of physical aging of glassy polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), followed from the change in the secondary relaxation with aging, is found to be independent of the density, the latter controlled by the pressure during glass formation. Thus, the aging behavior of the secondary relaxation is the same whether the glass is more compacted or less dense than the corresponding equilibrium liquid. This equivalence in aging of glasses formed under different pressures indicates that local packing is the dominant variable governing the glassy dynamics. One consequence is that pressure densification yi…
In this work we study the aging behavior of aqueous suspension of Laponite having 2.8 weight % concentration using rheological tools. At various salt concentration all the samples demonstrate orientational order when observed using crossed polarizers. In rheological experiments we observe inherent irreversibility in the aging dynamics which forces the system not to rejuvenate to the same state in the shear melting experiment carried out at a later date since preparation. The extensive rheological experiments carried out as a function of time elapsed since preparation demonstrate the self simil…
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the connection between thermal history and physical aging in polymer glasses, in particular the effects of a temperature square step. Measurements of two-time correlation functions show that a negative temperature step causes "rejuvenation" of the sample: the entire spectrum of relaxation times appears identical to a younger specimen that did not experience a temperature step. A positive temperature step, however, leads to significant changes in the relaxation times. At short times, the dynamics are accelerated (rejuvenation), whereas at l…
We report measurements of the frequency-dependent shear moduli of aging colloidal systems that evolve from a purely low-viscosity liquid to a predominantly elastic glass or gel. Using microrheology, we measure the local complex shear modulus $G^{*}(ω)$ over a very wide range of frequencies (1 Hz- 100 kHz). The combined use of one- and two-particle microrheology allows us to differentiate between colloidal glasses and gels - the glass is homogenous, whereas the colloidal gel shows a considerable degree of heterogeneity on length scales larger than 0.5 micrometer. Despite this characteristic dif…
We study aging behavior of aqueous suspension of Laponite as a function of concentration of Laponite, concentration of salt, time elapsed since preparation of suspension (idle time) and temperature by carrying extensive rheological and conductivity experiments. We observe that temporal evolution of elastic modulus, which describes structural buildup and aging, shifts to low times for experiments carried out for higher concentration of Laponite, higher concentration of salt, greater temperature and on higher idle time while preserving the curvature of evolution in the solid regime. Consequently…
We explore the link between soft vibrational modes and local relaxation events in polymer glasses during physical aging, active deformation at constant strain rate, and subsequent recovery. A softness field is constructed out of the superposition of the amplitudes of the lowest energy normal modes, and found to predict up to 70% of the rearrangements. Overlap between softness and rearrangements increases logarithmically during aging and recovery phases as energy barriers rise due to physical aging, while yielding rapidly rejuvenates the overlap to that of a freshly prepared glass. In the strai…
The influence of an applied shear field on the dynamics of an aging colloidal suspension has been investigated by the dynamic light scattering determination of the density autocorrelation function. Though a stationary state is never observed, the slow dynamics crosses between two different non-equilibrium regimes as soon as the structural relaxation time approaches the inverse shear rate. In the shear dominated regime (at high shear rate values) the structural relaxation time is found to be strongly sensitive to shear rate while aging proceeds at a very slow rate. The effect of shear on the de…
Aqueous suspension of nanoclay Laponite undergoes structural evolution as a function of time, which enhances its elasticity and relaxation time. In this work we employ effective time approach to investigate long term relaxation dynamics by carrying out creep experiments. Typically we observe that the monotonic evolution of elastic modulus shifts to lower aging times while maxima in viscous modulus gets progressively broader for experiments carried out on a later date since preparation (idle time) of nanoclay suspension. Application of effective time theory produces superposition of all the cre…
Molecular dynamics computer simulations are used to study the aging dynamics of SiO2 (modeled by the BKS model). Starting from fully equilibrated configurations at high temperatures T_i =5000K/3760K the system is quenched to lower temperatures T_f=2500K, 2750K, 3000K, 3250K and observed after a waiting time t_w. Since the simulation runs are long enough to reach equilibrium at T_f, we are able to study the transition from out-of-equilibrium to equilibrium dynamics. We present results for the partial structure factors, for the generalized incoherent intermediate scattering function C_q(t_w, t_w…
We employ parallel superposition rheology to study the dynamics of an aging colloidal glass in the presence of a mean field stress. Over a range of intermediate stresses, the loss modulus exceeds the storage modulus at short times but develops a maximum concomitant with a crossover between the two as the system ages. This is attended by a narrowing of the loss peak on increasing stress. We show that this feature is characteristic of the structural arrest in these materials, which is made observable on reasonable timescales by the activating influence of the stress. The arrest time displays an …
Owing to lack of time translational invariance, aging soft glassy materials do not obey fundamental principles of linear viscoelasticity. We show that by transforming the linear viscoelastic framework from the real time domain to the effective time domain, wherein the material clock is readjusted to account for evolution of relaxation time, the soft glassy materials obey effective time translational invariance. Consequently, we demonstrate successful validation of principles of linear viscoelasticity (Boltzmann superposition principle and convolution relation for creep compliance and stress re…
In this work we study creep flow behavior of suspension of Polyaniline (PANI) particles in silicone oil under application of electric field. Suspension of PANI in silicone oil, a model electrorheological fluid, shows enhancement in elastic modulus and yield stress with increase in the magnitude of electric field. Under creep flow field, application of greater magnitude of electric field reduces strain induced in the material while application of greater magnitude of shear stress at any electric field enhances strain induced in the material. Remarkably, time evolution of strain in PANI suspensi…
