The insulator-to-metal transition in Mott insulators is the key mechanism for a novel class of electronic devices, belonging to the Mottronics family. Intense research efforts are currently devoted to the development of specific control protocols, usually based on the application of voltage, strain, pressure and light excitation. The ultimate goal is to achieve the complete control of the electronic phase transformation, with dramatic impact on the performance, for example, of resistive switching devices. Here, we investigate the simultaneous effect of external voltage and excitation by ultrashort light pulses on a single Mottronic device based on a V$_2$O$_3$ epitaxial thin film. The experimental results, supported by finite-element simulations of the thermal problem, demonstrate that the combination of light excitation and external electrical bias drives a volatile resistivity drop which goes beyond the combined effect of laser and Joule heating. Our results impact on the development of protocols for the non-thermal control of the resistive switching transition in correlated materials.
The fundamental building blocks of modern silicon-based microelectronics, such as double gate transistors in non-volatile Flash memories, are based on the control of electrical resistance by electrostatic charging. Flash memories could soon reach their miniaturization limits mostly because reliably keeping enough electrons in an always smaller cell size will become increasingly difficult . The control of electrical resistance at the nanometer scale therefore requires new concepts, and the ultimate resistance-change device is believed to exploit a purely electronic phase change such as the Mott…
We study the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of single-layer 1TNbSe$_2$ from first principles. Within the generalized gradient approximation, the 1T polytype is highly unstable with respect to the 2H. The DFT+U method improves the stability of the 1T phase, explaining its detection in experiments. A charge density wave occurs with a $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}~R30^{\circ}$ periodicity, in agreement with STM data. At $U=0$, the David-star reconstruction displays a flat band below the Fermi level with a marked d$_{z^2-r^2}$ orbital character of the central Nb. The Hubbard interac…
The physics of the Mott transition in the anodic region of NiO Resistance Random Access Memory (RRAM) is discussed from the Hubbard model. The Hubbard approximation is examined in details and it is shown that the Wannier functions in the definition of Hubbard U should not be replaced by atomic s-functions when it comes to the metallic side of the transition. The corresponding effective Hubbard U is subject to variations, which may also be understood by introducing an effective permittivity of the solid as an ansatz. Furthermore, the transition could be demonstrated in the Brinkman-Rice picture…
The infrared transmission measurement was performed for a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling induced Mott insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ with a layered-perovskite structure. A phonon-assisted magnon mode was observed at around 1870 cm$^{-1}$ in the absorption spectrum below 180 K. The nearest-neighbor superexchange interaction $J$ was estimated to be 57 meV, which is about a half of the $J$ value of a copper oxide La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. Our results indicate the possibility that nontrivial properties such as superconductivity are realized at rather high temperature in iridium oxides.
Electric field effect (EFE) controlled magnetoelectric transport in thin films of undoped and La-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ (SIO) were investigated under the action of ionic liquid gating. Despite large carrier density modulation, the temperature dependent resistance measurements exhibit insulating behavior in chemically and EFE doped samples with the band filling up to 10\%. The ambipolar transport across the Mott gap is demonstrated by EFE tuning of the activation energy. Further, we observe a crossover from a negative magnetoresistance (MR) at high temperatures to positive MR at low temperatur…
An organic Mott insulator, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl, was investigated by resistance measurements under continuously controllable He gas pressure. The first-order Mott transition was demonstrated by observation of clear jump in the resistance variation against pressure. Its critical endpoint at 38 K is featured by vanishing of the resistive jump and critical divergence in pressure derivative of resistance, $|\frac{1}{R}\frac{\partial R}{\partial P}|$, which are consistent with the prediction of the dynamical mean field theory and have phenomenological correspondence with the liquid…
The magnetic structure of Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is investigated by neutron powder diffraction and bulk magnetization, showing dominant non-collinear Mn magnetic moments [$4.35(7)$ $μ_B$] that are orthogonally aligned with the small Re moments [$0.22(4)$ $μ_B$]. $Ab$-initio electronic structure calculations show that the strong spin-orbit coupling for Re $5d$ electrons combined with a relatively modest on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U_{eff}^{Re} \gtrsim 0.6$ eV) is sufficient to render this material insulating. This is a rare example of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator outside the re…
We examine the role of spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of $α$-RuCl3, in which Ru ions in 4d5 configuration form a honeycomb lattice. The measured optical spectra exhibit a clear optical gap and excitations within the t2g orbitals. The spectra can be described very well with first-principles electronic structure calculations obtained by taking into account both spin orbit coupling and electron correlations. Furthermore, our X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Ru L-edges exhibit distinct spectral features associated with the presence of substantial spin- orbit coupl…
In a honeycomb-lattice spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl3, an ultrafast magnetization is induced by circularly polarized excitation below the Mott gap. Photo-carriers play an important role, which are generated by turning down the synergy of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the spin-orbit interaction realizing the insulator state. An ultrafast 6- fs measurement of photo-carrier dynamics and a quantum mechanical analysis clarify the mechanism, according to which the magnetization emerges from a coherent charge motion between different t2g orbitals (dyz-dxz-dxy) of Ru3+ ions. This ult…
Ginzburg-Landau theory describes phase transitions as the competition between energy and entropy: The ordered phase has lower energy, while the disordered phase has larger entropy. When heating the system, ordering is reduced entropically until it vanishes at the critical temperature. This established picture implicitly assumes that the energy difference between ordered and disordered phase does not change with temperature. We show that for the Mott insulator KCuF3 this assumption is strongly violated: thermal expansion energetically stabilizes the orbitally-ordered phase to such and extent th…
The photoexcitation of a Mott insulator on a square lattice weakens the intensity of both single- and two-magnon excitations as observed in time-resolved resonant-inelastic X-ray scattering and time-resolved Raman scattering, respectively. However, the spectral changes in the low-energy regions below the magnons have not yet been clearly understood. To uncover the nature of the photoinduced low-energy magnetic excitations of the Mott insulator, we numerically investigate the transient magnetic dynamics in a photoexcited half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice. After turning off a pump pu…
We examined the temperature (T) evolution of the optical conductivity spectra of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ over a wide range of 10-400 K. The system was barely insulating, exhibiting a small indirect bandgap of $\sim$0.1 eV. The low-energy features of the optical d-d excitation (${\hbar}ω$ $<$ 0.3 eV) evolved drastically, whereas such evolution was not observed for the O K-edge X-ray absorption spectra. This suggests that the T evolution in optical spectra is not caused by a change in the bare (undressed) electronic structure, but instead, presumably originates from an abundance of phonon-assisted ind…
We present a theory of Mott memristors whose working principle is the non-linear carrier avalanche multiplication in Mott insulators subject to strong electric fields. The internal state of the memristor, which determines its resistance, is encoded in the density of doublon and hole excitations in the Mott insulator. In the current-voltage characteristic, insulating and conducting states are separated by a negative-differential-resistance region, leading to hysteretic behavior. Under oscillating voltage, the response of a voltage-controlled, non-polar memristive system is obtained, with retard…
Resistances that exceed the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, known as bad metal behavior, and non-Fermi liquid behavior are ubiquitous features of the normal state of many strongly correlated materials. Here we establish the conditions that lead to bad metal and non-Fermi liquid phases in NdNiO3, which exhibits a prototype, bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator transition. We show that resistance saturation is determined by the magnitude of the Ni eg orbital splitting, which can be tuned by strain in epitaxial films, causing the appearance of bad metal behavior under certain conditions. The results shed…
To explore the driving mechanisms of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and the structural transition in VO2, we have investigated phonon dispersions of rutile VO2 (R-VO2) in the DFT and the DFT+U (U : Coulomb correlation) band calculations. We have found that the phonon softening instabilities occur in both cases, but the softened phonon mode only in the DFT+U describes properly both the MIT and the structural transition from R-VO2 to monoclinic VO2 (M1-VO2). This feature demonstrates that the Coulomb correlation effect plays an essential role of assisting the Peierls transition in R-VO2. W…
The presence of free spins in granular Al films is directly demonstrated by $μ$SR measurements. A Mott transition is observed by probing the increase of the spin-flip scattering rate of conduction electrons as the nano-size metallic grains are being progressively decoupled. Analysis of the magneto-resistance in terms of an effective Fermi energy shows that it becomes of the order of the grains electrostatic charging energy at a room temperature resistivity $ρ\approx 50,000~μΩ~cm$, at which a metal to insulator transition is known to exist. As this transition is approached the magneto-resistanc…
Layered perovskite iridates realize a rare class of Mott insulators that are predicted to be strongly spin-orbit coupled analogues of the parent state of cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Recent discoveries of pseudogap, magnetic multipolar ordered and possible $d$-wave superconducting phases in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ have reinforced this analogy among the single layer variants. However, unlike the bilayer cuprates, no electronic instabilities have been reported in the doped bilayer iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Here we show that Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ realizes a weak Mott state with no cuprate a…
The transition voltage of an abrupt metal-insulator transition (MIT), observed by applying an electric field to two-terminal devices fabricated on a Mott insulator VO_2 film, decreases with increasing temperature up to 334K. The abrupt current jump disappears above 334 K near the MIT temperature. These results suggest that the mechanism of the abrupt MIT induced by temperature is the same as that by an electric field. The magnitude of the current jump (a large current) decreases with increasing external resistance; this is an important observation in terms of applying the abrupt MIT to device …
Vanadium dioxide undergoes a first order metal-insulator transition at 340 K. In this work, we develop and carry out state of the art linear scaling DFT calculations refined with non-local dynamical mean-field theory. We identify a complex mechanism, a Peierls-assisted orbital selection Mott instability, which is responsible for the insulating M$_1$ phase, and furthermore survives a moderate degree of disorder.
We present nonlinear conduction phenomena in the Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 investigated with a proper evaluation of self-heating effects. By utilizing a non-contact infrared thermometer, the sample temperature was accurately determined even in the presence of large Joule heating. We find that the resistivity continuously decreases with currents under an isothermal environment. The nonlinearity and the resulting negative differential resistance occurs at relatively low current range, incompatible with conventional mechanisms such as hot electron or impact ionization. We propose a possible current-…
We investigated the effect of magnetic field on the highly correlated metal near the Mott transition in the quasi-two-dimensional layered organic conductor, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl, by the resistance measurements under control of temperature, pressure, and magnetic field. It was demonstrated that the marginal metallic phase near the Mott transition is susceptible to the field-induced localization transition of the first order, as was predicted theoretically. The thermodynamic consideration of the present results gives a conceptual pressure-field phase diagram of the Mott transiti…
Phononless plasmon assisted transport through a long disordered array of finite length quantum wires is investigated analytically. Two temperature regimes, the low- and the high-temperature ones, with qualitatively different temperature dependencies of thermally activated resistance are identified. The characteristics of plasmon assisted and phonon assisted transport mechanisms are compared. Generically strong electron-electron interaction in quantum wires results in a qualitative change of the temperature dependence of thermally activated resistance in comparison to phonon assisted transport.…
Understanding orbital ordered (OO) Mott insulating states lies at the heart of a consistent resolution of the colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) observed in manganites, where its melting induces a low-$T$ insulator-metal transition for $0.25 \le x\le 0.45$. Motivated thereby, we study the OO states in a planar model for bilayer manganites using DMFT and finite-size diagonalisation methods. We derive the correct OO ground states observed in manganites for $x=0,{1/2},{2/3},{3/4}$ in exact agreement with observations, including the charge-orbital-magnetic ordered stripe phases for $x>{1/2}$. These…
We examine the third-order non-linear optical response of a one-dimensional Mott insulator coupled with phonons. The Mott insulator is described by an extended Hubbard-Holstein model. The third harmonic generation (THG) of the model is calculated by dynamical density-matrix renormalization group. We find that the electron-phonon interaction enhances the intensity of THG if the on-site Coulomb interaction is comparable to the band width, but the enhancement is small for a realistic parameter value of a typical Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_3$. The low-energy spin excitation does not contribute to t…
We report on the dramatic slowing down of the charge carrier dynamics in a quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor, which can be reversibly tuned through the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT). At the finite-temperature critical endpoint we observe a divergent increase of the resistance fluctuations accompanied by a drastic shift of spectral weight to low frequencies, demonstrating the critical slowing down of the order parameter (doublon density) fluctuations. The slow dynamics is accompanied by non-Gaussian fluctuations, indicative of correlated charge carrier dynamics. A possible explana…
$VO_2$ undergoes the insulator-metal transition (IMT) and monoclinic-rutile structural phase transition (SPT) near $67^oC$. The IMT switching has many applications. However, there is an unresolved issue whether the IMT is a Mott transition or a Peierls transition. This complication is caused by metal and insulator coexistence, which is an inherent property of the IMT region. Thus, the acquired data in the IMT region are averaged over the two phases in many experiments. We overcome the issue by probing the electronic state of the monoclinic structure and by introducing a model that accounts for…
The pressure-induced insulator to metal transition (IMT) of layered magnetic nickel phosphorous tri-sulfide NiPS3 was studied in-situ under quasi-uniaxial conditions by means of electrical resistance (R) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. This sluggish transition is shown to occur at 35 GPa. Transport measurements show no evidence of superconductivity to the lowest measured temperature (~ 2 K). The structure results presented here differ from earlier in-situ work that subjected the sample to a different pressure state, suggesting that in NiPS3 the phase stability fields are highly depen…
Applying newly developed dynamical density matrix renormalization group techniques at zero and finite temperatures to a Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, we examine the optical conductivity of a typical one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr_2CuO_3. We find a set of parameters in the Hubbard-Holstein model, which can describe optical conductivity for both Mott-gap excitation in the high-energy region and phonon-assisted spin excitation in the low-energy region. We also find that electron-phonon interaction gives additional broadening in the temperature dependence of the Mott-gap excitation.
In femtosecond pump-probe measurements, the appearance of coherent phonon oscillations at 4.5 THz and 6.0 THz indicating the rutile metal phase of VO_2 does not occur simultaneously with the first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) near 68^oC. The monoclinic and correlated metal(MCM) phase between the MIT and the structural phase transition (SPT) is generated by a photo-assisted hole excitation which is evidence of the Mott transition. The SPT between the MCM phase and the rutile metal phase occurs due to subsequent Joule heating. The MCM phase can be regarded as an intermediate non-equili…
We report that the thermally-induced Mott transition in vanadium sesquioxide shows critical-slowing-down and enhanced variance ('critical opalescence') of the order parameter fluctuations measured through low-frequency resistance-noise spectroscopy. Coupled with the observed increase of also the phase-ordering time, these features suggest that the strong abrupt transition is controlled by a critical-like singularity in the hysteretic metastable phase. The singularity is identified with the spinodal point and is a likely consequence of the strain-induced long-range interaction.
Resistive switching can be achieved in a Mott insulator by applying current/voltage, which triggers an insulator-metal transition (IMT). This phenomenon is key for understanding IMT physics and developing novel memory elements and brain-inspired technology. Despite this, the roles of electric field and Joule heating in the switching process remain controversial. We resolve this issue by studying nanowires of two archetypical Mott insulators - VO2 and V2O3. Our findings show a crossover between two qualitatively different regimes. In one, the IMT is driven by Joule heating to the transition tem…
The microscopic mechanism of the metal-insulator transition is studied by orbital-resolved 51V NMR spectroscopy in a prototype of the quasi-one-dimensional system V6O13. We uncover that the transition involves a site-selective d orbital order lifting twofold orbital degeneracy in one of the two VO6 chains. The other chain leaves paramagnetic moments on the singly occupied dxy orbital across the transition. The two chains respectively stabilize an orbital-assisted spin-Peierls state and an antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. The site-selective Mott transition may be a source…
The intertwined charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom could endow 5d compounds with exotic properties. Current interest is focused on electromagnetic interactions in these materials, whereas the important role of lattice geometry remains to be fully recognized. For this sake, we investigate pressure-induced phase transitions in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 with Raman, electrical resistance, and x-ray diffraction measurements. We reveal an interesting magnetic transition coinciding with a structural transition at 14.4 GPa, but without a concurrent insulator-metal trans…
Combination of low-dimensionality and electron correlation is vital for exotic quantum phenomena such as the Mott-insulating phase and high-temperature superconductivity. Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) 1T-TaS2 has evoked great interest owing to its unique nonmagnetic Mott-insulator nature coupled with a charge-density-wave (CDW). To functionalize such a complex phase, it is essential to enhance the CDW-Mott transition temperature TCDW-Mott, whereas this was difficult for bulk TMDs with TCDW-Mott < 200 K. Here we report a strong-coupling 2D CDW-Mott phase with a transition temperature on…
We point out the generic competition between the Hund's coupling and the spin-orbit coupling in correlated materials, and this competition leads to an electronic dilemma between the Hund's metal and the relativistic insulators. Hund's metals refer to the fate of the would-be insulators where the Hund's coupling suppresses the correlation and drives the systems into correlated metals. Relativistic Mott insulators refer to the fate of the would-be metals where the relativistic spin-orbit coupling enhances the correlation and drives the systems into Mott insulators. These contradictory trends are…
In order to explore the driving mechanism of the concomitant metal-insulator and structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional hollandite K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, electronic structures and phonon properties are investigated by employing the {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found that the imaginary phonon frequency reflecting the structural instability appears only in the DFT+$U$ ($U$: Coulomb correlation) calculation, which indicates that the Coulomb correlation plays an essential role in the structural transition. The lattice displacements of the softene…
We investigate the tunability of the structural, electronic and magneto transport properties of polycrystalline Sr2IrO4 sample. The extent of bifurcation of the magnetisation curves during the field cooled and zero field cooled cycles establishes that the magnetic anisotropy in the as-prepared sample is more as compared to the vacuum annealed one. Based on the behaviours of the structural parameters and the magnetic studies, our results show that the canted AFM structure is stabilised in a larger temperature range in the case of the annealed sample as compared to the as prepared one. At low te…
The effect of isoelectronic substitution within single crystals of (Sr1-xCax)2-yIrO4+z is explored. The nominal n=1 Ruddlesden-Popper phase with y=0, z=0 remains stable from x=0 until x=0.11, where the antiferromagnet spin-orbit Mott insulating state persists. An increase in the saturated moment is observed with increasing Ca-substitution, suggesting a modified coupling of the in-plane moments relative to the in-plane rotation of IrO6 octahedra. Beyond x=0.11, the x=1/4, y=0, z=1/2 structural phase Sr3CaIr2O9, consisting of a three-dimensional network of corner sharing octahedra, begins to int…
We present a theory describing the mechanism for the two-dimensional (2D) metal-insulator transition (MIT) in absence of disorder. A two-band Hubbard model is introduced, describing vacancy-interstitial pair excitations within the Wigner crystal. Kinetic energy gained by delocalizing such excitations is found to lead to an instability of the insulator to self-doping above a critical carrier concentration $n=n_c$, mapping the problem to a density-driven Mott MIT. This mechanism provides a natural microscopic picture of several puzzling experimental features, including the large effective mass e…
Using spin-assisted ab-initio random structure searches, we explore an exhaustive quantum phase diagram of archetypal interfaced Mott insulators, i.e. lanthanum-iron and lanthanum-titanium oxides. In particular, we report that the charge transfer induced by the interfacial electronic reconstruction stabilises a high spin ferrous Fe2+ state. We provide a pathway to control the strength of correlation in this electronic state by tuning the epitaxial strain, yielding a manifold of quantum electronic phases, i.e. Mott-Hubbard, charge transfer and Slater insulating states. Furthermore we report tha…
The search for materials with novel and unusual electronic properties is at the heart of condensed matter physics as well as the basis to develop conceptual new technologies. In this context, the correlated honeycomb transition metal oxides attract large attention for both, being a possible experimental realization of the theoretically predicted magnetic Kitaev exchange and the theoretical prospect of topological nontriviality. The Mott insulating sodium iridate is prototypical among these materials with the promising prospect to bridge the field of strongly correlated systems with topology, f…
A series of polycrystalline samples of Sr2-xIrO4 have been synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure of this doped system can be explained on the basis of the extended nature of 5d electrons and strontium vacancies in Sr2-xIrO4. The analysis of the temperature-dependent resistance of these samples reveals the semiconducting feature, where three dimensional variable range hopping behavior is observed at temperatures lower than 120K, Arrhenius type in intermediate temperatures from 140K to 200K, and two-dimensional (2D) weak localization at high temperatures from 220K t…
Metal-insulator transitions (MIT) belong to a class of fascinating physical phenomena, which includes superconductivity, and colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), that are associated with drastic modifications of electrical resistance. In transition metal compounds, MIT are often related to the presence of strong electronic correlations that drive the system into a Mott insulator state. In these systems the MIT is usually tuned by electron doping or by applying an external pressure. However, it was noted recently that a Mott insulator should also be sensitive to other external perturbations such a…
The spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 provides a fascinating playground to explore insulator-metal transition driven by intertwined charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we report high pressure electric resistance and resonant inelastic x ray scattering measurements on single crystal Sr3Ir2O7 up to 63 65 GPa at 300 K. The material becomes a confined metal at 59.5 GPa, showing metallicity in the ab plane but an insulating behavior along the c axis. Such an unusual phenomenon resembles the strange metal phase in cuprate superconductors. Since there is no sign of the collapse of sp…
We revisit the theory of magnetic Raman scattering in Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, with a major focus on Kitaev materials. We show that Kitaev materials with bond-anisotropic interactions are generally expected to show both one- and two-magnon responses. It is further shown that, in order to obtain the correct leading contributions to the Raman vertex operator $\mc{R}$, one must take into account the precise, photon-assisted microscopic hopping processes of the electrons and that, in systems with multiple hopping paths, $\mc{R}$ contains terms beyond those appearing in the …
A theory of the metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide from the high-temperature rutile to the low- temperature monoclinic phase is proposed on the basis of cluster dynamical mean field theory, in conjunction with the density functional scheme. The interplay of strong electronic Coulomb interactions and structural distortions, in particular the dimerization of vanadium atoms in the low temperature phase, plays a crucial role. We find that VO2 is not a conventional Mott insulator, but that the formation of dynamical V-V singlet pairs due to strong Coulomb correlations is necessary to tr…
We report high resolution neutron scattering measurements on the triangular lattice Mott insulator Na$_x$CrO$_2$ ($x$=1) which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusually broad fluctuating crossover regime extending far below the onset of spin freezing ($T_c\sim$41K). Our results show that below some crossover temperature ($T\sim0.75T_c$) a small incommensuration develops which helps resolve the spin frustration and drives three-dimensional magnetic order supporting coherent spin wave modes. This incommensuration assisted dimensional crossover suggests that inter-layer frustration is respo…
We study Na2IrO3 by ARPES, optics, and band structure calculations in the local-density approximation (LDA). The weak dispersion of the Ir 5d-t2g manifold highlights the importance of structural distortions and spin-orbit coupling (SO) in driving the system closer to a Mott transition. We detect an insulating gap Δ_gap = 340 meV which, at variance with a Slater-type description, is already open at 300 K and does not show significant temperature dependence even across T_N ~ 15 K. An LDA analysis with the inclusion of SO and Coulomb repulsion U reveals that, while the prodromes of an underlying …
Strongly correlated materials are expected to feature unconventional transport properties, such that charge, spin, and heat conduction are potentially independent probes of the dynamics. In contrast to charge transport, the measurement of spin transport in such materials is highly challenging. We observed spin conduction and diffusion in a system of ultracold fermionic atoms that realizes the half-filled Fermi-Hubbard model. For strong interactions, spin diffusion is driven by super-exchange and doublon-hole-assisted tunneling, and strongly violates the quantum limit of charge diffusion. The t…
Electron correlation and topology are two central threads of modern condensed matter physics. Semiconductor moiré materials provide a highly tunable platform for studies of electron correlation. Correlation-driven phenomena, including the Mott insulator, generalized Wigner crystals, stripe phases and continuous Mott transition, have been demonstrated. However, nontrivial band topology has remained elusive. Here we report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré heterobilayers. Unlike in the AA-stacked structures, an out-of-plane electric field con…
Sr2IrO4 exhibits a novel insulating state assisted by spin-orbit interactions. A series of polycrystalline samples of Sr2-xIrO4 have been synthesized. It is found that deep Sr-vacancies of Sr2-xIrO4 greatly reduce the rotation of IrO6 octahedral, and more importantly, a significant structural change occurs around x = 0.48 in both the lattice constants and the Ir-O2 bond length. An insulator-metal transition (IMT) appears and a non-Fermi-liquid metallic electronic state has been proved at x>0.48 in Sr2-xIrO4. Furthermore, a sudden drop emerges of the localization temperature T0 and the antiferr…
LiOsO$_3$ has been recently identified as the first unambiguous "ferroelectric metal", experimentally realizing a prediction from 1965 by Anderson and Blount. In this work, we investigate the metallic state in LiOsO$_3$ by means of infrared spectroscopy supplemented by Density Functional Theory and Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations. Our measurements and theoretical calculations clearly show that LiOsO$_3$ is a very bad metal with a small quasiparticle weight, close to a Mott-Hubbard localization transition. The agreement between experiments and theory allows us to ascribe all the releva…
We have studied conductance ($\it{g}$) of butanedithiol-linked gold nanoparticle films across a percolation insulator-to-metal transition. As the transition proceeds, electrons become itinerant (i.e. Coulomb charging and kinetic effects are both significant), and films exhibit a previously unobserved zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). The peak is much more pronounced and easily observed using electromigration-induced break junction (BJ) contacts rather than macroscopic 4-probe electrodes. We attribute this ZBCP to quantum correlations amongst electrons, in view of other temperature- ($\it{T}$-…
