An exotic environment surrounds the young stellar groups associated with the Canis Major (CMa) OB1/R1 region, which probably was formed under feedback from at least three supernova events having occurred a few million years ago. We use astrometric data from the Gaia-DR2 to confirm the membership of the stars in CMa R1, based on proper motion and parallax, which revealed 514 new members and candidates. The mean age of 5 Myr estimated from the color-magnitude diagram characterizes the sources as likely pre-main sequence candidates. In total, a sample of 694 stars detected with the T80-South telescope was analyzed according to different color-color diagrams, which were compared with theoretical colors from evolutionary models, aiming to reveal the objects that exhibit color excess due to accretion processes. Accretion and magnetic activity were also explored on the basis of empirical flux-flux relation, such as F660 and F861 that are related to Halpha and Ca II triplet emission, respectively. A low fraction (3 percent) of the sample have Halpha excess and other colors expected for stars exhibiting chromospheric activity. The number of Class I and Class II objects, identified by the infrared (WISE) colors, indicates a disk fraction of 6 percent, which is lower than the expected for stellar clusters with similar age. A such large sample of objects associated with CMa R1 without evidences of circumstellar accretion can be interpreted as a lack of disk-bearing stars, unusual for young star-forming regions. However, this may be explained as the result of supernova events.
We present mid- and far- IR imaging of four famous hypergiant stars: the red supergiants $μ$ Cep and VY CMa, and the warm hypergiants IRC +10420 and $ρ$ Cas. Our 11 to 37 $μ$m SOFIA/FORCAST imaging probes cool dust not detected in visual and near-IR imaging studies. Adaptive optics (AO) 8 - 12 $μ$m imaging of $μ$ Cep and IRC +10420 with MMT/MIRAC reveals extended envelopes that are the likely sources of these stars' strong silicate emission features. We find $μ$ Cep's mass-loss rate to have declined by about a factor of 5 over a 13,000 history, ranging from 5 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ down to $\sim$1…
We report BRITE-Constellation photometry of the beta Cep pulsator xi 1 CMa. Analysis of these data reveals a single pulsation period of 0.2095781(3) d, along with its first and second harmonics. We find no evidence for any other frequencies, limiting the value of this star as a target for magneto-asteroseismology. We em- ploy the 17-year database of RV measurements of xi 1 CMa to evaluate evidence for the reported change in pulsation period, and interpret this period change in terms of stellar evolution. We measure a rate-of-change of the period equal to 0.009(1) s/yr, consistent with that rep…
FS CMa stars are low-luminosity objects showing the B[e] phenomenon whose evolutionary origin is yet to be unraveled. Various binary-related hypotheses have been recently proposed, two of them involving the spiral-in evolution of the binary orbit. The latter occurs more often in dense stellar environments like young massive clusters (YMCs). Hence, a systematic study of FS CMa stars in YMCs would be crucial to find out how these objects are created. In YMCs, two FS CMa stars have been confirmed and three candidates have been found through a search method based on narrow-band photometry at Pasch…
The CMa R1 star-forming region contains several compact clusters as well as many young early-B stars. It is associated with a well-known bright rimmed nebula, the nature of which is unclear (fossil HII region or supernova remnant). To help elucidate the nature of the nebula, our goal was to reconstruct the star-formation history of the CMa R1 region, including the previously unknown older, fainter low-mass stellar population, using X-rays. We analyzed images obtained with the ROSAT satellite, covering ~5 sq. deg. Complementary VRI photometry was performed with the Gemini South telescope. Colou…
We present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of DD CMa, based on published survey photometry and new spectroscopic data. We find an improved orbital period of $P_\mathrm{o}= 2.0084530 \pm 0.0000006 ~\mathrm{d}$. Our spectra reveal H$β$ and H$α$ absorptions with weak emission shoulders and we also find color excess in the WISE multiband photometry, interpreted as signatures of circumstellar matter. We model the $V$-band orbital light curve derived from the ASAS and ASAS-SN surveys, assuming a semidetached configuration and using the mass ratio and temperature of the hotter star …
We analyze the V-band photometry data of the Be star omega CMa, observed during the last four decades. The data is fitted by hydrodynamic models based on the viscous decretion disk (VDD) theory, in which a disk around a fast-spinning Be star is formed by material ejected by the central star and driven to progressively wider orbits by means of viscous torques. For the first time, we apply the model for both the disk build up and the dissipation phases. Our simulations offer a good description of the photometric variability in both phases, which suggests that the VDD model adequately describes t…
There is an increasing body of evidence that suggests that Be disks are well described by the Viscous Decretion Disk (VDD) model according to which the formation and structure of the disk depend on the kinematic viscosity of the gas. However, most observational tests of the VDD to-date were done for systems that do not display strong temporal variability. From this analysis we (1) obtain a realistic physical model of the circumstellar environment; (2) measure the viscosity parameter of the gas, both during the formation and dissipation phases of the disk; (3) obtain a reliable estimate of the …
We analyzed V-band photometry of the Be star ω CMa, obtained during the last four decades, during which the star went through four complete cycles of disc formation and dissipation. The data were simulated by hydrodynamic models based on a time-dependent implementation of the viscous decretion disc (VDD) paradigm, in which a disc around a fast-spinning Be star is formed by material ejected by the star and driven to progressively larger orbits by means of viscous torques. Our simulations offer a good description of the photometric variability during phases of disc formation and dissipation, whi…
The observed emission lines of Be stars originate from a circumstellar Keplerian disk that are generally well explained by the Viscous Decretion Disk model. In an earlier work we performed the modeling of the full light curve of the bright Be star $ω$ CMa (Ghoreyshi et al. 2018) with the 1-D time-dependent hydrodynamics code SINGLEBE and the Monte Carlo radiative-transfer code HDUST. We used the V -band light curve that probes the inner disk through four disk formation and dissipation cycles. This new study compares predictions of the same set of model parameters with time-resolved photometry …
We report the first detection of the magnetic field in a star of FS CMa type, a subgroup of objects characterized by the B[e] phenomenon. The split of magnetically sensitive lines in IRAS 17449+2320 determines the magnetic field modulus of 6.2+/-0.2 kG. Spectral lines and their variability reveal the presence of a B-type spectrum and a hot continuum source in the visible. The hot source confirms GALEX UV photometry. Because there is a lack of spectral lines for the hot source in the visible, the spectral fitting gives only the lower temperature limit of the hot source, which is 50 000 K, and t…
CONTEXT: Accurate physical properties of eclipsing stars provide important constraints on models of stellar structure and evolution, especially when combined with spectroscopic information on their chemical composition. Empirical calibrations of the data also lead to accurate mass and radius estimates for exoplanet host stars. Finally, accurate data for unusual stellar subtypes, such as Am stars, also help to unravel the cause(s) of their peculiarities. AIMS: We aim to determine the masses, radii, effective temperatures, detailed chemical composition and rotational speeds for the Am-type eclip…
Recent BRITE-Constellation space photometry of the slowly rotating, magnetic $β$ Cep pulsator $ξ^1$ CMa permits a new analysis of its pulsation properties. Analysis of the two-colour BRITE data reveals the well-known single pulsation period of $0.209$ d, along with its first and second harmonics. A similar analysis of SMEI and TESS observations yields compatible results, with the higher precision TESS observations also revealing several low-amplitude modes with frequencies below 5 d$^{-1}$; some of these are likely $g$ modes. The phase lag between photometric and radial velocity maxima - equal…
FS CMa stars are low-luminosity objects showing the B[e] phenomenon whose evolutionary state remains a puzzle. These stars are surrounded by compact disks of warm dust of unknown origin. Hitherto, membership of FS CMa stars to coeval populations has never been confirmed. The discovery of low-luminosity line emitters in the young massive clusters Mercer 20 and Mercer 70 prompts us to investigate the nature of such objects. We intend to confirm membership to coeval populations in order to characterize these emission-line stars through the cluster properties. Based on ISAAC/VLT medium-resolution …
The relationship between young stellar clusters and respective parental molecular clouds is still an open issue: for instance, are the similarities between substructures of clouds and clusters just a coincidence? Or would they be the indication of a physical relationship? In order to address these issues, we have studied the CMa OB1/R1 region that shows evidence for a complex star formation history. We obtained molecular clouds mapping with the IRAM-30 metre telescope to reveal the physical conditions of an unexplored side of the CMa region aiming to compare the morphology of the clouds with t…
We have searched Microvariability and Oscillations of STars (MOST) satellite photometry obtained in 2004, 2005, and 2007 of the solar-type star HD 209458 for Trojan asteroid swarms dynamically coupled with the system's transiting "hot Jupiter" HD 209458b. Observations of the presence and nature of asteroids around other stars would provide unique constraints on migration models of exoplanetary systems. Our results set an upper limit on the optical depth of Trojans in the HD 209458 system that can be used to guide current and future searches of similar systems by upcoming missions. Using cross-…
A photometric variability study of a sample of northern field stars, which previously classified as either PMS or Herbig Ae/Be objects, has been undertaken with the purpose of detecting δ Scuti-type pulsations. Determination of physical parameters for these stars has also been carried out to locate them on the HR diagram and check the instability strip for this type of pulsators. Multichannel photomultiplier and CCD time series photometry in the uvby Strömgren and BVI Johnson bands were obtained during four consecutive years from 2007 to 2010. The light curves have been analysed, and a variabi…

We analyze $V$-band photometry of the aperiodic variability in T CrB. By applying a simple idea of angular momentum transport in the accretion disc, we have developed a method to simulate the statistical distribution of flare durations with the assumption that the aperiodic variability is produced by turbulent elements in the disc. Both cumulative histograms with Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, and power density spectra are used to compare the observed data and simulations. The input parameters of the model $R_{\rm in}$ and $α$ are correlated on a certain interval and the most probable values are an…
Inspired by the discovery of the red nova V1309 Sco (Nova Scorpii 2008) and the fact that its progenitor was a binary system with a rapidly decreasing orbital period, we have searched for period changes in OGLE binary stars. We have selected a sample of 22 462 short-period (P_orb < 4d) eclipsing binary stars observed toward the Galactic bulge by the OGLE-III survey in years 2001-2009. This dataset was extended with photometry from OGLE-II (1997-2000) and the first six years of OGLE-IV (2010-2015). For some stars, the data were supplemented with OGLE-I photometry (1992-1995). After close inspec…
Open clusters can be the key to deepen our knowledge on various issues involving the structure and evolution of the Galactic disk and details of stellar evolution because a cluster's properties are applicable to all its members. However the number of open clusters with detailed analysis from high resolution spectroscopy and/or precision photometry imposes severe limitation on studies of these objects. To expand the number of open clusters with well-defined chemical abundances and fundamental parameters, we investigate the poorly studied, anticenter open cluster Tombaugh 1. Using precision uvby…
New MMT/MIRAC (9-11 μm), SOFIA/FORCAST (11-37 μm), and Herschel/PACS (70 and 160 μm) infrared (IR) imaging and photometry is presented for three famous OH/IR red supergiants (NML Cyg, VX Sgr, and S Per) and two normal red supergiants (RS Per and T Per). We model the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using radiative transfer code DUSTY. Azimuthal average profiles from the SOFIA/FORCAST imaging, in addition to dust mass distribution profiles from DUSTY, constrain the mass-loss histories of these supergiants. For all of our observed supergiants, the DUSTY models suggest that constant …

We present accurate wide-field uVI photometry of the remote and massive Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419, aimed at searching for the u-V color spread along the Red Giant Branch (RGB) that is generally interpreted as the photometric signature of the presence of multiple populations in globular clusters. Focusing on the RGB stars in the magnitude range 19.8<V<22.0, we find that (a) the u-V, u-I and the V-I spreads about the RGB ridge line are significantly larger than that expected from observational errors, accurately quantified by means of extensive artificial stars experiments, (b) the intr…
We present a follow-up study on the recent detection of two X-ray flaring events by MAXI/GSC observations in soft and hard X-rays from MAXI J0709-159 in the direction of HD 54786 (LY CMa), on 2022 January 25. The X-ray luminosity during the flare was around 10^(37) erg/s (MAXI), which got reduced to 10^(32) erg/s (NuSTAR) after the flare. We took low-resolution spectra of HD 54786 from HCT and VBT facilities in India, on 2022 February 1 and 2. In addition to H-alpha emission, we found emission lines of He I in the optical spectrum of this star. By comparing our spectrum of the object with thos…
It is uncertain whether or not low-mass Population III stars ever existed. While limits on the number density of Population III stars with $M_{\ast} \approx 0.8~M_{\odot}$ have been derived using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, little is known about the occurrence of Population III stars at lower masses. In the absence of reliable parallaxes, the spectra of metal-poor main sequence (MPMS) stars with $M_{\ast} \lesssim 0.8~M_{\odot}$ can easily be confused with cool white dwarfs. To resolve this ambiguity, we present a classifier that differentiates between MPMS stars and white dwarfs bas…
By controlling instrumental errors to below 10 cm/s, the EXtreme PREcision Spectrograph (EXPRES) allows for a more insightful study of photospheric velocities that can mask weak Keplerian signals. Gaussian Processes (GP) have become a standard tool for modeling correlated noise in radial velocity datasets. While GPs are constrained and motivated by physical properties of the star, in some cases they are still flexible enough to absorb unresolved Keplerian signals. We apply GP regression to EXPRES radial velocity measurements of the 3.5 Gyr old chromospherically active Sun-like star, HD 101501.…
The MACHO Project collected photometry of many RR Lyrae stars from its observations of the Milky Way's bulge. We examined the lightcurves of 3256 stars identified as RRab Lyr variables by \cite{Kund2008}, subtracting an empirical model of the pulsation lightcurve and searching for periodic variation in the residuals. There are no systems which show the brief dips in light characteristic of detached eclipsing binary systems. We discuss the results for objects which show the largest residual periodic modulation, most of which are probably due to aliases of the fundamental period.
Direct imaging surveys have discovered wide-orbit planetary-mass companions that challenge existing models of both star and planet formation, but their demographics remain poorly sampled. We have developed an automated binary companion point spread function (PSF) fitting pipeline to take advantage of Spitzer's infrared sensitivity to planetary-mass objects and circum(sub)stellar disks, measuring photometry across the four IRAC channels of 3.6 $μ$m, 4.5 $μ$m, 5.8 $μ$m, and 8.0 $μ$m. We present PSF-fitting photometry of archival Spitzer/IRAC images for 11 young, low-mass ($M\sim0.044$-0.88 $M_{\…
We have investigated the variable stars in the field surrounding NGC 2355 based on the time-series photometric observation data. More than 3000 CCD frames were obtained in the V band spread over 13 nights with the Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope. We have detected 88 variable stars, containing 72 new variable stars and 16 known variable stars. By analyzing these light curves, we classified the variable stars as follows: 26 eclipsing binaries, 52 pulsating stars, 4 rotating variables, and 6 unclear type variable stars for which their periods are much longer than the time baseline chosen. …

Most dynamically confirmed stellar-mass black holes and the candidates were originally selected from X-ray outbursts. In the present work, we search for black hole candidates in the LAMOST survey by using the spectra along with photometry from the ASAS-SN survey, where the orbital period of the binary may be revealed by the periodic light curve, such as the ellipsoidal modulation type. Our sample consists of 9 binaries, where each source contains a giant star with large radial velocity variation ($ΔV_{\rm R} > 70~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$) and periods known from light curves. We focus on the 9 sources …
HD179949 is an F8V star, orbited by a close-in giant planet with a period of ~3 days. Previous studies suggested that the planet enhances the magnetic activity of the parent star, producing a chromospheric hot spot which rotates in phase with the planet orbit. However, this phenomenon is intermittent since it was observed in several but not all seasons. A long-term monitoring of the magnetic activity of HD179949 is required to study the amplitude and time scales of star-planet interactions. In 2009 we performed a simultaneous optical and X-ray spectroscopic campaign to monitor the magnetic act…
The census of young moving groups in the solar neighborhood is significantly incomplete in the low-mass regime. We have developed a new selection process to find these missing members based on the GALEX All-Sky Imaging Survey. For stars with spectral types >K5 and younger than 300~Myr, we show that near-UV and far-UV emission is greatly enhanced above the quiescent photosphere, analogous to the enhanced X-ray emission of young low-mass stars seen by ROSAT but detectable to much larger distances with GALEX. By combining GALEX data with optical (HST Guide Star Catalog) and near-IR (2MASS) photom…
We present CFHT photometry and IRTF spectroscopy of low-mass candidate members of Serpens South and Serpens Core ($\sim$430 pc, $\sim$0.5 Myr), identified using a novel combination of photometric filters, known as the W-band method. We report SC182952+011618, SS182959-020335 and SS183032-021028 as young, low-mass Serpens candidate members, with spectral types in the range M7-M8, M5-L0 and M5-M6.5 respectively. Best-fit effective temperatures and luminosities imply masses of $<$ 0.12M$_{\odot}$ for all three candidate cluster members. We also present Hubble Space Telescope imaging data (F127M, …
Multiple stellar populations (MPs) in most star clusters older than 2 Gyr, as seen by lots of spectroscopic and photometric studies, have led to a significant challenge to the traditional view of star formation. In this field, space-based instruments, in particular the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), have made a breakthrough as they significantly improved the efficiency of detecting MPs in crowding stellar fields by images. The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) and the HST are sensitive to a similar wavelength interval, but it covers a field of view which is about 5-8 times wider than that of…
Context: Debris discs orbiting young stars are key to understand dust evolution and the planetary formation process. We take advantage of a recent membership analysis of the 30 Myr nearby open cluster IC 4665 based on the Gaia and DANCe surveys to revisit the disc population of this cluster. Aims: We aim to study the disc population of IC 4665 using Spitzer (MIPS and IRAC) and WISE photometry. Methods: We use several colour-colour diagrams with empirical photospheric sequences to detect the sources with an infrared excess. Independently, we also fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of ou…
We searched for isolated planetary-mass T-dwarfs in the 3Myr old Serpens Core cluster. We performed a deep imaging survey of the central part of this cluster using the WIRCam camera at the CFHT. Observations were performed through the narrow-band CH4_off and CH4_on filters, to identify young T-dwarfs from their 1.6micr methane absorption bands, and the broad-band JHK filters, to better characterize the selected candidates. We complemented our WIRCam photometry with optical imaging data from MegaCam at CFHT and Suprime-Cam at the Subaru telescope and mid-IR flux measurements from the Spitzer c2…
We report the results of high-resolution ($R \sim 80,000$) spectroscopic observations of the emission-line object HD 85567, which has been classified as a FS CMa type object or a pre-main-sequence star. The main goal is to put more constraints on the object's fundamental parameters as well as on its nature and evolutionary state. Absorption lines in the spectrum of HD 85567 were found similar to those of mid B--type dwarfs and correspond to the following fundamental parameters: T$_{\rm eff} = 15000\pm500$ K, $v \sin i = 31\pm3$ km s$^{-1}$, $\log g \sim 4.0$. The interstellar extinction, A$_V$…
Oscillating red-giant stars in binary systems are an ideal testbed for investigating the structure and evolution of stars in the advanced phases of evolution. With 83 known red giants in binary systems, of which only ~40 have determined global seismic parameters and orbital parameters, the sample is small compared to the numerous known oscillating stars. The detection of red-giant binary systems is typically obtained from the signature of stellar binarity in space photometry. The time base of such data biases the detection towards systems with shorter periods and orbits of insufficient size to…
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is currently concluding its 2-year primary science mission searching 85% of the sky for transiting exoplanets. TESS has already discovered well over one thousand TESS objects of interest (TOIs), but these candidate exoplanets must be distinguished from astrophysical false positives using other instruments or techniques. The 3-band Multi-color Simultaneous Camera for Studying Atmospheres of Transiting Planets (MuSCAT), as well as the 4-band MuSCAT2, can be used to validate TESS discoveries. Transits of exoplanets are achromatic when observed in m…
We present Ks -band light curves for 299 Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) of which 288 are new discoveries that we have identified using multi-epoch near-infrared photometry obtained by the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). The new Cepheids have periods in the range from 0.34 to 9.1 days and cover the magnitude interval 12.9 <= Ks <= 17.6 mag. Our method was developed using variable stars previously identified by the optical microlensing survey OGLE. We focus on searching new Cepheids in external regions of the SMC for which complete VMC Ks-band observations are a…
