Context: Debris discs orbiting young stars are key to understand dust evolution and the planetary formation process. We take advantage of a recent membership analysis of the 30 Myr nearby open cluster IC 4665 based on the Gaia and DANCe surveys to revisit the disc population of this cluster.
Aims: We aim to study the disc population of IC 4665 using Spitzer (MIPS and IRAC) and WISE photometry.
Methods: We use several colour-colour diagrams with empirical photospheric sequences to detect the sources with an infrared excess. Independently, we also fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of our debris disc candidates with the Virtual Observatory SED analyser (VOSA) which is capable of automatically detecting infrared excesses and provides effective temperature estimates.
Results: We find six candidates debris disc host-stars (five with MIPS and one with WISE) and two of them are new candidates. We estimate a disc fraction of 24$\pm$10\% for the B-A stars, where our sample is expected to be complete. This is similar to what has been reported in other clusters of similar ages (Upper Centaurus Lupus, Lower Centaurus Crux, the $β$ Pictoris moving group, and the Pleiades). For solar type stars we find a disk fraction of 9$\pm$9%, lower than that observed in regions with comparable ages.
Conclusions: Our candidates debris disc host-stars are excellent targets to be studied with ALMA or the future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
We describe Spitzer IRS spectroscopic observations of the 10 Myr-old star, EF Cha. Compositional modeling of the spectra from 5 μm to 35 μm confirms that it is surrounded by a luminous debris disk with LD/L\star ~ 10-3, containing dust with temperatures between 225 K and 430 K characteristic of the terrestrial zone. The EF Cha spectrum shows evidence for many solid-state features, unlike most cold, low-luminosity debris disks but like some other 10-20 Myr-old luminous, warm debris disks (e.g. HD 113766A). The EF Cha debris disk is unusually rich in a species or combination of species whose emi…
The nature of the few known solar-mass stars simultaneously containing debris disks and planets remains an open question. A number of works have shown that this property appears to be independent of planetary masses as well as of stellar age, but possible correlations with stellar kinematics and metallicity have not been investigated. In this paper, we show that the majority of known stars containing both debris disks and planets belong to the metal-enriched Galactic thin disk. The few exceptions are stars that seem to be born in the star formation peak occurring in times of thick disk formati…
We analyze two new sets of coagulation calculations for solid particles orbiting within the terrestrial zone of a solar-type star. In models of collisional cascades, numerical simulations demonstrate that the total mass, the mass in 1 mm and smaller particles, and the dust luminosity decline with time more rapidly than predicted by analytic models, $\propto t^{-n}$ with $n \approx$ 1.1-1.2 instead of 1. Size distributions derived from the numerical calculations follow analytic predictions at radii less than 0.1 km but are shallower than predicted at larger sizes. In simulations of planet forma…
Circumstellar disks around stars older than 10 Myr are expected to be gas-poor. There are, however, two examples of old (30-40 Myr) debris-like disks containing a detectable amount of cold CO gas. Here we present ALMA and Herschel Space Observatory observations of one of these disks, around HD 21997, and study the distribution and origin of the dust and its connection to the gas. Our ALMA continuum images at 886um clearly resolve a broad ring of emission within a diameter of ~4.5 arcsec, adding HD 21997 to the dozen debris disks resolved at (sub)millimeter wavelengths. Modeling the morphology …
We present a search for debris discs amongst M-dwarf members of nearby, young (5-150 Myr) moving groups (MGs) using infrared (IR) photometry, primarily from the Wide Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). A catalogue of 100 MG M-dwarfs that have suitable WISE data is compiled and 19 of these are found to have significant IR excess emission at 22$μ$m. Our search is likely to be complete for discs where the ratio of flux from the disc to flux from the star $f_{\rm d}/f_{*} > 10^{-3}$. The spectral energy distributions are supplemented with 2MASS photometry and data at longer wavelengths and fitted wit…
We present IRAC/MIPS Spitzer observations of intermediate-mass stars in the 5 Myr old Lambda Orionis cluster. In a representative sample of stars earlier than F5 (29 stars), we find a population of 9 stars with a varying degree of moderate 24um excess comparable to those produced by debris disks in older stellar groups. As expected in debris disks systems, those stars do not exhibit emission lines in their optical spectra. We also include in our study the star HD 245185, a known Herbig Ae object which displays excesses in all Spitzer bands and shows emission lines in its spectrum. We compare t…
Different pieces of observational evidence suggest the existence of disks around isolated neutron stars. Such disks could be formed from supernova fallback when neutron stars are born in core-collapse supernova explosions. Efforts have been made to search for disks around different classes of pulsars, which include millisecond pulsars, young neutron star classes (magnetars, central compact objects, and X-ray dim isolated neutron stars), and regular radio pulsars. We review the main results from observations at wavelengths of from optical to sub-millimeter/millimeter.
We report on our searches for debris disks around seven relatively nearby radio pulsars, which are isolated sources and were carefully selected as the targets on the basis of our deep $K_s$-band imaging survey. The $K_s$ images obtained with the 6.5\,m Baade Magellan Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory are analyzed together with the \textit{Spitzer}/IRAC images at 4.5 and 8.0~$μ$m and the \textit{WISE} images at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22~$μ$m. No infrared (IR) counterparts of these pulsars are found, with flux upper limits of $\sim μ$Jy at near-infrared ($λ<10\ μ$m) and $\sim$10--1000\,$μ$Jy at mi…
We present Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24um imaging of members of the 27+/-5Myr old open cluster IC 4665. Models for the assembly of terrestrial planets through planetesimal collisions and mergers predict episodic dust debris discs at this epoch. We determine that 42(+18-13)% of the solar-type (F5-K5) cluster members have excess emission at 24um indicative of these debris discs, the highest frequency of the clusters studied with Spitzer to date. The majority of these discs have intermediate levels of excess (F_24/F_phot < 2), and no source is found to have extreme levels of excess indicative of a re…
We propose 35 star systems within ~70 pc of Earth as newly identified members of nearby young stellar kinematic groups; these identifications include the first A- and late-B type members of the AB Doradus moving group and field Argus Association. All but one of the 35 systems contain a bright solar- or earlier-type star that should make an excellent target for the next generation of adaptive optics (AO) imaging systems on large telescopes. AO imaging has revealed four massive planets in orbit around the λ Boo star HR 8799. Initially the planets were of uncertain mass due in large part to the u…
Debris disks are considered to be gas-poor, but recent observations revealed molecular or atomic gas in several 10-40 Myr old systems. We used the APEX and IRAM 30m radiotelescopes to search for CO gas in 20 bright debris disks. In one case, around the 16 Myr old A-type star HD 131835, we discovered a new gas-bearing debris disk, where the CO 3-2 transition was successfully detected. No other individual system exhibited a measurable CO signal. Our Herschel Space Observatory far-infrared images of HD 131835 marginally resolved the disk both at 70 and 100$μ$m, with a characteristic radius of ~17…
Only 20\% of old field stars have detectable debris discs, leaving open the question of what disc, if any, is present around the remaining 80\%. Young moving groups allow to probe this population, since discs are expected to have been brighter early on. This paper considers the population of F~stars in the 23~Myr-old BPMG where we find that 9/12 targets possess discs. We also analyse archival ALMA data to derive radii for 4 of the discs, presenting the first image of the 63au radius disc of HD~164249. Comparing the BPMG results to disc samples from $\sim45$~Myr and $\sim150$~Myr-old moving~gro…
A debris disk is a constituent of any planetary system surrounding a main sequence star. We study whether close stellar encounters can disrupt and strip a debris disk of its planetesimals in the expanding open cluster of its birth with a decreasing star number density over 100 Myrs. Such stripping would affect the dust production and hence detectability of the disk. We tabulated the fractions of planetesimals stripped off during stellar flybys of miss distances between 100 and 1000 AU and for several mass ratios of the central to passing stars. We then estimated the numbers of close stellar en…
We examine the mid-infrared fluxes and spectral energy distributions for metal-poor stars with iron abundances [Fe/H] $\lesssim-5$, as well as two CEMP-no stars, to eliminate the possibility that their low metallicities are related to the depletion of elements onto dust grains in the formation of a debris disk. Six out of seven stars examined here show no mid-IR excess. These non-detections rule out many types of circumstellar disks, e.g. a warm debris disk ($T\!\le\!290$ K), or debris disks with inner radii $\le1$ AU, such as those associated with the chemically peculiar post-AGB spectroscopi…
(Abridged) Tentative correlations between the presence of dusty debris discs and low-mass planets have been presented. In parallel, detailed chemical abundance studies have reported different trends between samples of planet and non-planet hosts. We determine in a homogeneous way the metallicity, and abundances of a sample of 251 stars including stars with known debris discs, with debris discs and planets, and only with planets. Stars with debris discs and planets have the same [Fe/H] behaviour as stars hosting planets, and they also show a similar <[X/Fe]>-Tc trend. Different behaviour in the…
We present 24 micron photometry of the intermediate-age open cluster Praesepe. We assemble a catalog of 193 probable cluster members that are detected in optical databases, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and at 24 micron, within an area of ~ 2.47 square degrees. Mid-IR excesses indicating debris disks are found for one early-type and for three solar-type stars. Corrections for sampling statistics yield a 24 micron excess fraction (debris disk fraction) of 6.5 +- 4.1% for luminous and 1.9 +- 1.2% for solar-type stars. The incidence of excesses is in agreement with the decay trend of deb…
The 30 Myr old A3-type star HD 21997 is one of the two known debris dust disks having a measurable amount of cold molecular gas. With the goal of understanding the physical state, origin, and evolution of the gas in young debris disks, we obtained CO line observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Here we report on the detection of 12CO and 13CO in the J=2-1 and J=3-2 transitions and C18O in the J=2-1 line. The gas exhibits a Keplerian velocity curve, one of the few direct measurements of Keplerian rotation in young debris disks. The measured CO brightness distr…
We present a survey for RR Lyrae stars in an area of 50 deg$^2$ around the globular cluster $ω$ Centauri, aimed to detect debris material from the alleged progenitor galaxy of the cluster. We detected 48 RR Lyrae stars of which only 11 have been previously reported. Ten among the eleven previously known stars were found inside the tidal radius of the cluster. The rest were located outside the tidal radius up to distances of $\sim 6$ degrees from the center of the cluster. Several of those stars are located at distances similar to that of $ω$ Centauri. We investigated the probability that those…
Among the 21 Herbig Ae/Be stars studied, new detections of a magnetic field were achieved in six stars. For three Herbig Ae/Be stars, we confirm previous magnetic field detections. The largest longitudinal magnetic field, <B_z> = -454+-42G, was detected in the Herbig Ae/Be star HD101412 using hydrogen lines. No field detection at a significance level of 3sigma was achieved in stars with debris disks. Our study does not indicate any correlation of the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field with disk orientation, disk geometry, or the presence of a companion. We also do not see any simple d…
Debris disks are classically considered to be gas-less systems, but recent (sub)millimeter observations have detected tens of those with rich gas content. The origin of the gas component remains unclear; namely, it can be protoplanetary remnants and/or secondary products deriving from large bodies. In order to be protoplanetary in origin, the gas component of the parental protoplanetary disk is required to survive for $\gtrsim10{\,\rm Myr}$. However, previous models predict $\lesssim 10{\,\rm Myr}$ lifetimes because of efficient photoevaporation at the late stage of disk evolution. In the pres…
The lifetime of a planetary disc which orbits a white dwarf represents a crucial input parameter into evolutionary models of that system. Here we apply a purely analytical formalism to estimate lifetimes of the debris phase of these discs, before they are ground down into dust or are subject to sublimation from the white dwarf. We compute maximum lifetimes for three different types of white dwarf discs, formed from (i) radiative YORP breakup of exo-asteroids along the giant branch phases at 2-100 au, (ii) radiation-less spin-up disruption of these minor planets at $\sim 1.5-4.5R_{\odot}$, and …
The reality of a field Argus Association has been doubted in some papers in the literature. We apply Gaia DR2 data to stars previously suggested to be Argus members and conclude that a true association exists with age 40-50 Myr and containing many stars within 100 pc of Earth; Beta Leo and 49 Cet are two especially interesting members. Based on youth and proximity to Earth, Argus is one of the better nearby moving groups to target in direct imaging programs for dusty debris disks and young planets.
Debris disks around stars are considered as components of planetary systems. Constrain the dust properties of these disks can give crucial information to formation and evolution of planetary systems. As an all-sky survey, \textit{InfRared Astronomical Satellite} (\iras) gave great contribution to the debris disk searching which discovered the first debris disk host star (Vega). The \iras-detected debris disk sample published by Rhee \citep{rhe07} contains 146 stars with detailed information of dust properties. While the dust properties of 45 of them still can not be determined due to the limit…
HD 166191 has been identified by several studies as hosting a rare and extremely bright warm debris disc with an additional outer cool disc component. However, an alternative interpretation is that the star hosts a disc that is currently in transition between a full gas disc and a largely gas-free debris disc. With the help of new optical to mid-IR spectra and Herschel imaging, we argue that the latter interpretation is supported in several ways: i) we show that HD 166191 is co-moving with the ~4 Myr-old Herbig Ae star HD 163296, suggesting that the two have the same age, ii) the disc spectrum…
We present imaging observations at 1.3 millimeters of the debris disk surrounding the nearby M-type flare star AU Mic with beam size 3 arcsec (30 AU) from the Submillimeter Array. These data reveal a belt of thermal dust emission surrounding the star with the same edge-on geometry as the more extended scattered light disk detected at optical wavelengths. Simple modeling indicates a central radius of ~35 AU for the emission belt. This location is consistent with the reservoir of planetesimals previously invoked to explain the shape of the scattered light surface brightness profile through size-…
We present $H$-band scattered light imaging of a bright debris disk around the A0 star HD 36546 obtained from the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system with data recorded by the HiCIAO camera using the vector vortex coronagraph. SCExAO traces the disk from $r$ $\sim$ 0.3" to $r$ $\sim$ 1" (34--114 au). The disk is oriented in a near east-west direction (PA $\sim$ 75$^{o}$), is inclined by $i$ $\sim$ 70--75$^{o}$ and is strongly forward-scattering ($g$ $>$ 0.5). It is an extended disk rather than a sharp ring; a second, diffuse dust population extends from the disk's east…
We present the detection of an unusually large transient gas absorption in several ionized species in the debris disc star HD 37306 using high-resolution optical spectra. We have been analysing a large sample of debris discs searching for circumstellar gas absorptions aiming to determine the frequency of gas in debris discs. HD 37306 stood out showing remarkably broad absorptions superimposed onto several photospheric Ca ii, Fe ii and Ti ii lines. The observed absorptions, unlike typical exocometary transits, lasted for at least eight days. Here we analyse simultaneous spectroscopic and photom…
Context. The orbit of the giant planet discovered around beta Pic is slightly inclined with respect to the outer parts of the debris disc, which creates a warp in the inner debris disc. This inclination might be explained by gravitational interactions with other planets. Aims. We aim to search for additional giant planets located at smaller angular separations from the star. Methods. We used the new L'-band AGPM coronagraph on VLT/NACO, which provides an exquisite inner working angle. A long observing sequence was obtained on beta Pic in pupil-tracking mode. To derive sensitivity limits, the c…
We report the detection of a wide young hierarchical triple system where the primary has a candidate debris disc. The primary, TYC 5241-986-1 A, is a known Tycho star which we classify as a late-K star with emission in the X-ray, near and far-UV and Hα suggestive of youth. Its proper motion, photometric distance (65-105 pc) and radial velocity lead us to associate the system with the broadly defined Local Association of young stars but not specifically with any young moving group. The presence of weak lithium absorption and X-ray and calcium H and K emission support an age in the 20 to ~125 My…
We present a Spitzer IRAC and MIPS survey of NGC 2451 A and B, two open clusters in the 50-80 Myr age range. We complement these data with extensive ground-based photometry and spectroscopy to identify the cluster members in the Spitzer survey field. We find only two members with 8 micron excesses. The incidence of excesses at 24 microns is much higher, 11 of 31 solar-like stars and 1 of 7 early-type (A) stars. This work nearly completes the debris disk surveys with Spitzer of clusters in the 30-130 Myr range. This range is of inte rest because it is when large planetesimal collisions may have…
AU Mic is a young, nearby X-ray active M-dwarf with an edge-on debris disk. Debris disk are the successors of the gaseous disks usually surrounding pre-main sequence stars which form after the first few Myrs of their host stars' lifetime, when - presumably - also the planet formation takes place. Since X-ray transmission spectroscopy is sensitive to the chemical composition of the absorber, features in the stellar spectrum of AU Mic caused by its debris disk can in principle be detected. The upper limits we derive from our high resolution Chandra LETGS X-ray spectroscopy are on the same order …
Fomalhaut is one of the most interesting and well studied nearby stars, hosting at least one planet, a spectacular debris ring, and two distant low-mass stellar companions (TW PsA and LP 876-10, a.k.a. Fomalhaut B & C). We observed both companions with Herschel, and while no disc was detected around the secondary, TW PsA, we have discovered the second debris disc in the Fomalhaut system, around LP 876-10. This detection is only the second case of two debris discs seen in a multiple system, both of which are relatively wide ($\gtrsim$3000 AU for HD 223352/40 and 158 kAU [0.77 pc] for Fomalhaut/…
(Abridged) We present the results of the first unbiased survey for metal pollution among H-atmosphere (DA) white dwarfs with cooling ages of 20-200 Myr and 17000K < Teff < 27000K, using HST COS in the far UV between 1130 and 1435 A. The atmospheric parameters and element abundances are determined using theoretical models, which include the effects of element stratification due to gravitational settling and radiative levitation. We find 48 of the 85 DA white dwarfs studied, or 56% show traces of metals. In 25 stars, the elements can be explained by radiative levitation alone, although we argue …
We present 5 to 15 micron Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) low resolution spectral data of a candidate debris disk around an M4.5 star identified as a likely member of the ~40 Myr old cluster NGC2547. The IRS spectrum shows a silicate emission feature, indicating the presence of warm, small, (sub)micron-sized dust grains in the disk. Of the fifteen previously known candidate debris disks around M-type stars, the one we discuss in this paper is the first to have an observed mid-infrared spectrum and is also the first to have measured silicate emission. We combined the IRS data with ancillary…
We analyze Spitzer IRS spectra of 110 B-, A-, F-, and G-type stars with optically thin infrared excess in the Scorpius-Centaurus (ScoCen) OB association. The age of these stars ranges from 11-17 Myr. We fit the infrared excesses observed in these sources by Spitzer IRS and Spitzer MIPS to simple dust models according to Mie theory. We find that nearly all the objects in our study can be fit by one or two belts of dust. Dust around lower mass stars appears to be closer in than around higher mass stars, particularly for the warm dust component in the two-belt systems, suggesting mass-dependent e…
We present MIPS 24um and 70um photometry for 205 members of the Upper Scorpius OB Association. These data are combined with published MIPS photometry for 15 additional association members to assess the frequency of circumstellar disks around 5 Myr old stars with spectral types between B0 and M5. Twelve stars have a detectable 70um excess, each of which also has a detectable 24um excess. A total of 54 stars are identified with a 24um excess more than 32% above the stellar photosphere. The MIPS observations reveal 19 excess sources -- 8 A/F/G stars and 11 K/M stars -- that were not previously id…
Millimeter emission from debris disks around stars of different ages provides constraints on the collisional evolution of planetesimals. We present ALMA 1.3 millimeter observations of a sample of 76 Solar-type stars in the ~115 Myr old Pleiades star cluster. These ALMA observations complement previous infrared observations of this sample by providing sensitivity to emission from circumstellar dust at lower temperatures, corresponding to debris at radii comparable to the Kuiper Belt and beyond. The observations obtain a beam size of 1.5 arcsec (200 au) and a median rms noise of 54 mircoJy/beam,…
Aiming to detect planetary companions to young stars with debris disks via the radial velocity method, we observed HD114082 during April 2018 - August 2022 as one of the targets of our RVSPY program (Radial Velocity Survey for Planets around Young stars). We used the FEROS spectrograph, mounted to the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope in Chile, to obtain high signal-to-noise spectra and time series of precise radial velocities (RVs). Additionally, we analyzed archival HARPS spectra and TESS photometric data. We used the CERES, CERES++ and SERVAL pipelines to derive RVs and activity indicators and ExoStr…
Based on a new version of the Hipparcos catalog and currently available radial velocity data, we have searched for stars that either have encountered or will encounter the solar neighborhood within less than 3 pc in the time interval from -2 Myr to +2 Myr. Nine new candidates within 30 pc of the Sun have been found. To construct the stellar orbits relative to the solar orbit, we have used the epicyclic approximation. We show that, given the errors in the observational data, the probability that the well-known star HIP 89 825 (GL 710) encountering with the Sun most closely falls into the Oort c…
We present the first images of four debris disks observed in scattered light around the young (4--250 Myr old) M dwarfs TWA 7 and TWA 25, the K6 star HD 35650, and the G2 star HD 377. We obtained these images by reprocessing archival Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS coronagraph data with modern post-processing techniques as part of the Archival Legacy Investigation of Circumstellar Environments (ALICE) program. All four disks appear faint and compact compared with other debris disks resolved in scattered light. The disks around TWA 25, HD 35650, and HD 377 appear very inclined, while TWA 7's disk…
Planets and their host stars carry a long-term memory of their origin in their chemical compositions. Thus, identifying planets formed in different environments improves our understating of planetary formation. Although restricted to detecting exoplanets within the solar vicinity, we might be able to detect planetary systems that formed in small external galaxies and later merged with the Milky Way. In fact, Gaia data have unequivocally shown that the Galaxy underwent several significant minor mergers during its first billion years of formation. The stellar debris of one of these mergers, Gaia…
We characterize the first 40 Myr of evolution of circumstellar disks through a unified study of the infrared properties of members of young clusters and associations with ages from 2 Myr up to ~ 40 Myr: NGC 1333, NGC 1960, NGC 2232, NGC 2244, NGC 2362, NGC 2547, IC 348, IC 2395, IC 4665, Chamaeleon I, Orion OB1a and OB1b, Taurus, the \b{eta} Pictoris Moving Group, \r{ho} Ophiuchi, and the associations of Argus, Carina, Columba, Scorpius-Centaurus, and Tucana-Horologium. Our work features: 1.) a filtering technique to flag noisy backgrounds, 2.) a method based on the probability distribution of…
In 2010 a sub-stellar companion to the solar analog pre-main sequence star PZ Tel and member of the about 12 Myr old Beta Pic moving group was found by high-contrast direct imaging independently by two teams. In order to determine the basic parameters of this companion more precisely and independent of evolutionary models, hence age independent, we obtained follow-up spectroscopic observations of primary and companion. We use the Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared (SINFONI) at the Very Large Telescope Unit 4/YEPUN of ESO's Paranal Observatory in H+K band and proc…
(abridged) We present 24 and 70 micron MIPS observations of 70 A through M-type dwarfs with estimated ages from 8 Myr to 1.1 Gyr, as part of a Spitzer guaranteed time program. Our sample is selected from stars with common youth indicators such as lithium abundance, X-ray activity, chromospheric activity, and rapid rotation. We compare our MIPS observations to empirically derived K-[24] colors as a function of the stellar effective temperature to identify 24 and 70 micron excesses. We confirm the previously published 70 micron excesses for HD 92945, HD 112429, and AU Mic. We present the discove…
Only four star clusters are known within ~100 pc of Earth. Of these, the Chi1 For cluster has barely been studied. We use the Gaia DR2 catalog and other published data to establish the cluster membership, structure, and age. The age of and distance to the cluster are ~40 Myr and 104 pc, respectively. A remarkable, unprecedented, aspect of the cluster is the large percentage of M-type stars with warm excess infrared emission due to orbiting dust grains -- these stars lie in an annulus that straddles the tidal radius of the cluster. The Chi1 For cluster appears to be closely related to two exten…
One of the defining properties of debris discs compared to protoplanetary discs used to be their lack of gas, yet small amounts of gas have been found around an increasing number of debris discs in recent years. These debris discs found to have gas tend to be both young and bright. In this paper we conduct a deep search for CO gas in the system HD 95086 - a 17 Myr old, known planet host that also has a debris disc with a high fractional luminosity of $1.5\times10^{-3}$. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) we search for CO emission lines in bands 3, 6 and 7. By impleme…
Using the kinematically unbiased technique described in Binks, Jeffries & Maxted (2015), we present optical spectra for a further 122 rapidly-rotating (rotation periods < 6 days), X-ray active FGK stars, selected from the SuperWASP survey. We identify 17 new examples of young, probably single stars with ages of < 200 Myr and provide additional evidence for a new northern hemisphere kinematic association: the Pisces Moving Group (MG). The group consists of 14 lithium-rich G- and K-type stars, that have a dispersion of only $\sim $3 kms$^{-1}$ in each Galactic space velocity coordinate. The grou…
HD 61005 is a nearby young solar type star that shows a large infrared excess due to a debris disk. The disk has been recently imaged from ground and space, with indications of several components. Some characteristics of the disk suggest the presence of planetary companions around the star, that remain undetected in deep adaptive optics imaging. For a better understanding of the system we aim to refine the determination of the stellar parameters, with emphasis on the stellar age and system orientation. We used ASAS and Hipparcos photometry and FEROS spectra to determine the rotation period, ra…
We present 3.6 to 70 μm Spitzer photometry of 154 weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) in the Chamaeleon, Lupus, Ophiuchus and Taurus star formation regions, all of which are within 200 pc of the Sun. For a comparative study, we also include 33 classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) which are located in the same star forming regions. Spitzer sensitivities allow us to robustly detect the photosphere in the IRAC bands (3.6 to 8 μm) and the 24 μm MIPS band. In the 70 μm MIPS band, we are able to detect dust emission brighter than roughly 40 times the photosphere. These observations represent the most sensitive…
We present the results of a new magnetic field survey of Herbig Ae/Be and A debris disk stars. They are used to determine whether magnetic field properties in these stars are correlated with the mass-accretion rate, disk inclinations, companion(s), Silicates, PAHs, or show a more general correlation with age and X-ray emission as expected for the decay of a remnant dynamo.
HD32297 is a young A-star (~30 Myr) 112 pc away with a bright edge-on debris disk that has been resolved in scattered light. We observed the HD32297 debris disk in the far-infrared and sub-millimeter with the Herschel Space Observatory PACS and SPIRE instruments, populating the spectral energy distribution (SED) from 63 to 500μm. We aimed to determine the composition of dust grains in the HD32297 disk through SED modeling, using geometrical constraints from the resolved imaging to break degeneracies inherent in SED modeling. We found the best fitting SED model has 2 components: an outer ring c…
We present far- and near-ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy of the $\sim$23 Myr edge-on debris disk surrounding the A0V star $η$ Telescopii, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We detect absorption lines from C I, C II, O I, Mg II, Al II, Si II, S II, Mn II, Fe II, and marginally N I. The lines show two clear absorption components at $-22.7\pm0.5$ km s$^{-1}$ and $-17.8\pm0.7$ km s$^{-1}$, which we attribute to circumstellar (CS) and interstellar (IS) gas, respectively. CO absorption is not detected, and we find no evidence for star-grazing exocomets…
We report the discovery of the resolved disk around HD 131835 and present the analysis and modeling of its thermal emission. HD 131835 is a ~15 Myr A2 star in the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association at a distance of 122.7 +16.2 -12.8 parsec. The extended disk has been detected to ~1.5" (200 AU) at 11.7 μm and 18.3 μm with T-ReCS on Gemini South. The disk is inclined at an angle of ~75° with the position angle of ~61°. The flux of HD 131835 system is 49.3+-7.6 mJy and 84+-45 mJy at 11.7 μm and 18.3 μm respectively. A model with three grain populations gives a satisfactory fit to both the spectral…
HD 113337 and HD 38529 host pairs of giant planets, a debris disc, and wide M-type stellar companions. We measure the disc orientation with resolved images from Herschel and constrain the three-dimensional orbits of the outer planets with Gaia DR2 and Hipparcos astrometry. Resolved disc modelling leaves degeneracy in the disc orientation, so we derive four separate planet-disc mutual inclination ($ΔI$) solutions. The most aligned solutions give $ΔI=17-32°$ for HD 113337 and $ΔI=21-45°$ for HD 38529 (both 1$σ$). In both systems, there is a small probability (<0.3 per cent) that the planet and d…
