The MACHO Project collected photometry of many RR Lyrae stars from its observations of the Milky Way's bulge. We examined the lightcurves of 3256 stars identified as RRab Lyr variables by \cite{Kund2008}, subtracting an empirical model of the pulsation lightcurve and searching for periodic variation in the residuals. There are no systems which show the brief dips in light characteristic of detached eclipsing binary systems. We discuss the results for objects which show the largest residual periodic modulation, most of which are probably due to aliases of the fundamental period.
We present an analysis of the lightcurve extracted from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite Full Frame Images of the double-mode RR Lyrae V338 Boo. We find that the fundamental mode pulsation is changing in amplitude across the 54 days of observations. The first overtone mode pulsation also changes, but on a much smaller scale. Harmonics and combinations of the primary pulsation modes also exhibit unusual behavior. Possible connections with other changes in RR Lyrae pulsations are discussed, but a full understanding of the cause of the changes seen in V338 Boo should shed light on some of th…

We reanalyzed the c-type RR Lyrae star BE Dor (MACHO 5.4644.8, OGLE-LMC-RRLYR-06002) that had been discovered to show cyclic period changes. The photometric data of several sky surveys (DASCH, MACHO, OGLE, ASAS-SN, and TESS) were used for analyses. The O-C diagram and pulsation period obtained from Fourier analysis show significant period modulations in BE Dor. However, different from the previous viewpoint, the changes are quasi-periodic and abrupt. Therefore, the light-travel time effect caused by the companion motion cannot explain the changes. We analyzed 151 variables previously classified as fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars from Campaigns 01-04 of the Kepler two wheel (K2) archive. By employing a method based on the application of systematics filtering with the aid of co-trending light curves in the presence of the large amplitude signal component, we searched for additional Fourier signals in the close neighborhood of the fundamental period. We found only 13 stars without such components, yielding the highest rate of 91% of modulated (Blazhko) stars detected so far. A detection efficiency test suggests that this occurrence rate li…
Investigation of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the $(V-R)_{MACHO}$ or $(V-I)$ colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by a…

The success of automatic classification of variable stars strongly depends on the lightcurve representation. Usually, lightcurves are represented as a vector of many statistical descriptors designed by astronomers called features. These descriptors commonly demand significant computational power to calculate, require substantial research effort to develop and do not guarantee good performance on the final classification task. Today, lightcurve representation is not entirely automatic; algorithms that extract lightcurve features are designed by humans and must be manually tuned up for every sur…
The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) is a near-IR time-domain survey of the Galactic bulge and southern plane. One of the main goals of this survey is to reveal the 3D structure of the Milky Way through their variable stars. Particularly the RR Lyrae stars have been massively discovered in the inner regions of the bulge ($-8^\circ \lesssim b \lesssim -1^\circ$) by optical surveys such as OGLE and MACHO but leaving an unexplored window of more than $\sim 47$ sq deg ($-10.0^\circ \lesssim \ell \lesssim +10.7^\circ$ and $-10.3^\circ \lesssim b \lesssim -8.0^\circ$) observed by the VVV Surv…
In this paper, we report on the detection of RRab stars with quasi-identical-shape light curves but period differences as large as $0.05-0.21$ d using the Galactic bulge data of the OGLE-IV survey. We have examined stars with shorter periods than the Oosterhoff~I ridge of the bulge. These stars generally have smaller amplitudes and larger Fourier phase-differences than the typical bulge RRab stars have at the same period. Many of these "anomalous" stars have good-quality light curves without any sign of the Blazhko modulation. Examining their Fourier parameters revealed that several of these s…
Context. The Blazhko effect, in RR Lyrae type stars, is a century old mystery. Dozens of theory exists, but none have been able to entirely reproduce the observational facts associated to this modulation phenomenon. Existing theory all rely on the usual continuous modelization of the star. Aims. We present a new paradigm which will not only explain the Blazhko effect, but at the same time, will give us alternative explanations to the red limit of the instability strip, the synchronization of layers, the mode selection and the existence of a limit cycle for radially pulsating stars. Methods. We…
Variable stars with well-calibrated period-luminosity relationships provide accurate distance measurements to nearby galaxies and are therefore a vital tool for cosmology and astrophysics. While these measurements typically rely on samples of Cepheid and RR-Lyrae stars, abundant populations of luminous variable stars with longer periods of $10 - 1000$ days remain largely unused. We apply machine learning to derive a mapping between lightcurve features of these variable stars and their magnitude to extend the traditional period-luminosity (PL) relation commonly used for Cepheid samples. Using p…
We are entering an era of unprecedented quantities of data from current and planned survey telescopes. To maximise the potential of such surveys, automated data analysis techniques are required. Here we implement a new methodology for variable star classification, through the combination of Kohonen Self Organising Maps (SOM, an unsupervised machine learning algorithm) and the more common Random Forest (RF) supervised machine learning technique. We apply this method to data from the K2 mission fields 0-4, finding 154 ab-type RR Lyraes (10 newly discovered), 377 Delta Scuti pulsators, 133 Gamma …
