We report on our re-calculation of electroweak top-quark pair production in Standard Model extensions with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 particles at the LHC with substantial improvements. In particular, we allow for flavour--non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the Standard Model and beyond. As in our previous work we include NLO QCD corrections and match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the Standard Model and new physics interference effects. We consider the Sequential Standard Model, the Topcolour model as well as the Third Family Hypercharge Model featuring non-flavour diagonal $Z'$ couplings which has been proposed to explain the anomalies in $B$ decays. Numerical results for $t\bar{t}$ cross sections at hadron colliders with $\sqrt{s}$ of up to 100 TeV are presented. We also investigate the numerical impact of the new non-resonant contributions.
The coupling of the electroweak gauge bosons of the Standard Model (SM) to leptons is flavour universal. Extensions of the SM do not necessarily have this property. Rare decays of heavy flavour are suppressed in the SM and new particles may give sizeable contributions to these processes, therefore, their precise study allows for sensitive tests of lepton flavour universality. Of particular interest are rare b to sll decays that are well accessible at the LHCb experiment. Recent results from LHCb on lepton flavour universality in rare b to sll decays are discussed.
We perform an updated fit to LHC Higgs data and LEP electroweak precision tests in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We assume a generic structure of the SMEFT operators without imposing any flavour symmetries. The implementation is released as part of the public global SMEFT likelihood. This allows one to fit parameters of a broad class of new physics models to combined Higgs, electroweak, quark flavour, and lepton flavour observables.
The measurements carried out at LEP and SLC projected us into the precision era of electroweak physics. This has also been relevant in the theoretical interpretation of LHCb and Belle measurements of rare $B$ semileptonic decays, paving the road for new physics with the inference of lepton universality violation in $R_{K^{(*)}}$ ratios. The simplest explanation of these flavour anomalies -- sizeable one-loop contributions respecting Minimal Flavour Violation -- is currently disfavoured by electroweak precision data. In this work, we discuss how to completely relieve the present tension between…
We calculate the contributions to electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) due to a fourth generation of fermions with the most general (quark-)flavour structure (but assuming Dirac neutrinos and a trivial flavour structure in the lepton sector). The new-physics contributions to the EWPOs are calculated at one-loop order using automated tools (FeynArts/FormCalc). No further approximations are made in our calculation. We discuss the size of non-oblique contributions arising from Z--quark--anti-quark vertex corrections and the dependence of the EWPOs on all CKM mixing angles involving the fourt…
A composite Higgs boson of 125 GeV mass, only mildly fine-tuned, requires top partners with a semi-perturbative coupling and a mass not greater than about a TeV. We analyze the strong constraints on such picture arising from flavour and electroweak precision tests in models of partial compositeness. We consider different representations for the composite fermions and compare the case of an anarchic flavour structure to models with a U(3)^3 and U(2)^3 flavour symmetry. Although non trivially, some models emerge that look capable of accommodating a 125 GeV Higgs boson with top partners in an int…

We discuss a theory of flavour in which Higgs Yukawa couplings are related to those of the new scalar triplet leptoquark and/or $Z'$ responsible for $R_{K^{(*)}}$, with all couplings arising effectively from mixing with a vector-like fourth family, whose mass may be anywhere from the Planck scale to the electroweak scale for the leptoquarks explanation, but is pinned down to the TeV scale if the $Z'$ exchange plays a role. However, in this particular model, only leptoquark exchange can contribute significantly to $R_{K^{(*)}}$, since $Z'$ exchange is too constrained from $B_s$ mixing and $τ\ri…
We present the electroweak and flavour structure of a model with a warped extra dimension and the bulk gauge group SU(3) x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x P_LR x U(1)_X. The presence of SU(2)_R implies an unbroken custodial symmetry in the Higgs system allowing to eliminate large contributions to the T parameter, whereas the P_LR symmetry and the enlarged fermion representations provide a custodial symmetry for flavour diagonal and flavour changing couplings of the SM Z boson to left-handed down-type quarks. We diagonalise analytically the mass matrices of charged and neutral gauge bosons including the fi…
The SUSY-EW one-loop quantum contributions to flavour-changing MSSM Higgs-boson decays into $b \bar s$ and $s \bar b$ are computed and discussed. We use the full diagrammatic approach that is valid for all $\tan β$ values and do not rely on the mass-insertion approximation for the characteristic flavour-changing parameter. We analyze in full detail the dependence of these flavour-changing partial widths on all the relevant MSSM parameters and also study the non-decoupling behaviour of these widths with the SUSY mass parameters. We find that these contributions are sizable as compared to the SM…
The top condensate see-saw mechanism of Dobrescu and Hill allows electroweak symmetry to be broken while deferring the problem of flavour to an electroweak singlet, massive sector. We provide an extended version of the singlet sector that naturally accommodates realistic masses for all the standard model fermions, which play an equal role in breaking electroweak symmetry. The models result in a relatively light composite Higgs sector with masses typically in the range of (400-700)~GeV. In more complete models the dynamics will presumably be driven by a broken gauged family or flavour symmetry …
In the Type I see-saw model, the naturalness requirement that corrections to the electroweak $μ$ parameter not exceed 1 TeV results in a rough bound on the lightest right-handed neutrino mass, $M_{N_1}\lesssim 3\times 10^7$ GeV. In this letter we derive generic bounds applicable in any three-flavour Type I see-saw model. We find $M_{N_1}\lesssim 4\times 10^7$ GeV and $M_{N_2}\lesssim 7\times 10^7$ GeV. In the limit of one massless neutrino, there is no naturalness bound on $M_{N_3}$ in the Poincare protected decoupling limit. Our results confirm that no Type I see-saw model can explain the obs…
Until now the focus within the direct search for supersymmetry has mainly been on flavour diagonal observables. Recently lepton flavour violating signals at future electron positron colliders have been studied. There is now an opportunity to analyse the relations between collider observables and low-energy observables in the hadronic sector. In a first work in this direction, we study flavour violation in the squark decays of the second and third generations taking into account results from B physics, in particular from the rare decay b ->s gamma. Correlations between various squark decay mode…
Lepton flavour universality (LFU) in B-decays is revisited by considering a class of semileptonic operators defined at a scale Lambda above the electroweak scale v. The importance of quantum effects, so far neglected in the literature, is emphasised. We construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian taking into account the running effects from Lambda down to v through the one-loop renormalization group equations (RGE) in the limit of exact electroweak symmetry and QED RGEs from v down to the 1 GeV scale. The most important quantum effects turn out to be the modification of the leptonic coupling…
With the discovery of the Higgs boson the Standard Model has become a complete and comprehensive theory, which has been verified with unparalleled precision and in principle might be valid at all scales. However, several reasons remain why we firmly believe that there should be physics beyond the Standard Model. Experiments such as the LHC, new $B$ factories, and earth- and space-based astro-particle experiments provide us with unique opportunities to discover a coherent framework for many of the long-standing puzzles of our field. Here we explore several significant interconnections between t…
flavio is an open source tool for phenomenological analyses in flavour physics and other precision observables in the Standard Model and beyond. It consists of a library to compute predictions for a plethora of observables in quark and lepton flavour physics and electroweak precision tests, a database of experimental measurements of these observables, a statistics package that allows to construct Bayesian and frequentist likelihoods, and of convenient plotting and visualization routines. New physics effects are parameterised as Wilson coefficients of dimension-six operators in the weak effecti…
We study the combined effects of both strong and electroweak dimension six effective operators on flavour changing top quark physics at the LHC. Analytic expressions for the cross sections and decay widths of several flavour changing processes will be presented, as well as an analysis of the feasibility of their observation at the LHC.
We investigate the role of the electroweak corrections to the scattering cross section of Standard Model fermions with gravity. We use both an approach of scattering off an external potential, where the gravitational field is treated as a classical background generated by a heavy source, and the usual interaction based on the one-graviton-exchange. In the potential appoach we consider the fields both of a localized and of a distributed gravitational source of spherical symmetry and uniform density, separating the cases of interactions taking place both in the inner and external regions of the …
We propose that the electroweak and flavour quantum numbers of the Standard Model (SM) could be unified at high energies in an $SU(4)\times Sp(6)_L \times Sp(6)_R$ anomaly-free gauge model. All the SM fermions are packaged into two fundamental fields, $Ψ_L \sim (\mathbf{4}, \mathbf{6}, \mathbf{1})$ and $Ψ_R\sim (\mathbf{4}, \mathbf{1},\mathbf{6})$, thereby explaining the origin of three families of fermions. The SM Higgs, being electroweakly charged, necessarily becomes charged also under flavour when embedded in the UV model. It is therefore natural for its vacuum expectation value to couple …
If the electroweak symmetry is broken by some unspecified strong dynamics, composite fermions may exist with definite transformation properties under SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R/SU(2)_{L+R} and may play a role in giving masses by mixing to all the standard quarks and leptons. Assuming this to be the case, we analyze the role of Singlets, Doublets and Triplets in the ElectroWeak Precision Tests and in Flavour Physics. Doublets and Triplets are generically disfavoured. In the Singlet case, we specify the breaking patterns of the flavour group that allow to keep the CKM picture of flavour physics and we di…
In the Standard Model (SM), the coupling of the electroweak gauge bosons to the leptons is lepton flavour universal. Tests of this property constitute sensitive probes for new physics models that violate lepton flavour universality. Recent tests of lepton universality in rare $b\to s\ell\ell$ decays and semileptonic $b\to cτ\barν_τ$ transitions have shown some tensions with the precise SM predictions. These proceedings summarise the latest results on lepton flavour universality from the LHCb experiment.
We study flavour susceptibilities in the ${\cal N}=4$ SU(N) super Yang-Mills plasma coupled to two quark flavours at strong coupling and large $N$ by means of its gravity dual. The off-diagonal susceptibility is 1/N-suppressed and we compute it as a one-loop effect on the gravity side. Contrary to naive extrapolation from perturbative results, it attains a finite value in the infinite-coupling limit. Moreover, its parametric form is independent of whether or not meson bound states exist in the plasma. We conclude that caution must be exercised when drawing conclusions about the QCD plasma from…
We show that the correct perturbation theory for mixed fermion states leads to nonvanishing contributions of the dimension-four vertex operators for flavour-changing transitions. Their contributions to the amplitude are of the same order of magnitude as the dimension- five vertex operators. Considerations are valid irrespective of the electroweak model. A complete and correct evaluation of the neutrino lifetime for particular electroweak models could be of greate importance in the theoretical cosmology and astrophysics.
We make use of the formalism developed in Ref. [1], and calculate the chargino mediated baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The formalism makes use of a gradient expansion of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for mixing fermions. For illustrative purposes, we first discuss the semiclassical transport equations for mixing bosons in a space-time dependent Higgs background. To calculate the baryon asymmetry, we solve a standard set of diffusion equations, according to which the chargino asymmetry is transported to the top sector, where it biases sphaleron transitions. At the end …
We show that the dynamics responsible for the variation of the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model fermions generically leads to a very strong first-order electroweak phase transition, assuming that the Yukawa couplings are large and of order 1 before the electroweak phase transition and reach their present value afterwards. There are good motivations to consider that the flavour structure could emerge during electroweak symmetry breaking, for example if the Froggatt-Nielsen field dynamics were linked to the Higgs field. In this paper, we do not need to assume any particular theory of flavo…
We present an extensive analysis of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models with minimal and non-minimal flavour violation. We first demonstrate that low-energy, precision electroweak, and cosmological constraints exclude large "collider-friendly" regions of the minimal parameter space. We then discuss various possibilities how flavour violation, although naturally suppressed, may still occur in gauge-mediation models. The introduction of non-minimal flavour violation at the electroweak scale is shown to relax the stringent experimental constraints, so that benchmark points, that are also…
The phenomenological sum-rule-based approach is used to discuss the quark composition dependence of some static and quasi-static electroweak characteristics of nucleons. The role of nonvalence degrees of freedom, the nucleon sea partons and/or peripheral meson currents, is shown to be important to select and make use of the relevant symmetry parametrization of hadron observables. With our preferable universal value of the SU(3)-symmetry parameter $α_{D}=D/F+D=.58$, taken for both magnetic moments and axial-vector constants entering into the semi-leptonic baryon decays, we obtain the following v…
In this thesis we discuss the combined effects of strong and electroweak FCNC effective operators in top quark physics at the CERN LHC and lepton flavour violation at the ILC with dimension six effective operators.
We study Yukawa Renormalization Group (RG) running effects in the context of the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT).The Yukawa running being flavour dependent leads to RG-induced off-diagonal entries, so that initially diagonal Yukawa matrices at the high scale have to be rediagonalized at the electroweak (EW) scale. Performing such flavour rotations can lead to flavour violating operators which differ from the ones obtained through SMEFT RG evolution. We show, that these flavour rotations can have a large impact on low-energy phenomenology. In order to demonstrate this effect, we compare…
We extend and improve upon our previous calculation of electroweak top-quark pair hadroproduction in extensions of the Standard Model with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 resonances. In particular, we allow for flavour-non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the SM and beyond including the contributions with $t$-channel $W$ and $W'$ bosons. All amplitudes are generated using the Recola2 package. As in our previous work, we include NLO QCD corrections and consistently match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the interfe…
We show that the CKM matrix can be the source of CP violation for electroweak baryogenesis if Yukawa couplings vary at the same time as the Higgs acquires its vacuum expectation value. This offers new avenues for explaining the baryon asymmetry of the universe. These ideas apply if the mechanism explaining the flavour structure of the Standard Model is connected to electroweak symmetry breaking. We compute the resulting baryon asymmetry for various low-scale flavour models and different configurations of the Yukawa coupling variation across the bubble wall, and show that it can naturally be of…
We study the impact of flavours on the efficiency factors and give analytical and numerical results of the baryon asymmetry taking into account the different charged lepton Yukawa contributions and the complete (diagonal and off-diagonal) $L$ to $B-L$ conversion $A$ matrix. With this treatment we update the lower bound on the lightest right-handed neutrino mass.
It is widely believed that existing electroweak data requires a Standard Model Higgs to be light while electroweak and flavour physics constraints require other scalars charged under the Standard Model gauge couplings to be heavy. We analyze the robustness of these beliefs within a general scalar sector and find both to be incorrect, provided that the scalar sector approximately preserves custodial symmetry and minimal flavour violation (MFV). We demonstrate this by considering the phenomenology of the Standard Model supplemented by a scalar having SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y quantum numbers (8…
We consider QCD radiative corrections to the associated production of a heavy-quark pair ($Q{\bar Q}$) with a generic colourless system $F$ at hadron colliders. We discuss the resummation formalism for the production of the $Q{\bar Q}F$ system at small values of its total transverse momentum $q_T$. The perturbative expansion of the resummation formula leads to the explicit ingredients that can be used to apply the $q_T$ subtraction formalism to fixed-order calculations for this class of processes. We use the $q_T$ subtraction formalism to perform a fully differential perturbative computation f…
We investigate the information that can be gained by including flavour data in fits of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with the assumption of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), allowing - as initial conditions at the high scale - leading terms in spurionic Yukawas only. Starting therefore from a theory with no tree level flavour changing neutral currents at the scale of new physics, we calculate effects in flavour changing processes at one loop, and the resulting constraints on linear combinations of SMEFT coefficients, consistently parameterising the electroweak parameters and…
We study the intersection of flavour and collider physics for Two-Higgs-Doublet models of Type I and II. Drawing from the flavour precision-LHC exotics search complementarity, we also provide a projection of the future sensitivity that can be achieved in light of currently available analyses. On the one hand, we find that the parameter space of the 2HDM can be explored significantly further with more data from the LHC with some complementarity with flavour physics. On the other hand, flavour physics results alongside their projections remain powerful tools to constrain the model space in regio…
We consider a 5D extension of the DFSZ axion model that addresses both the axion quality and fermion mass hierarchy problems, and predicts flavour-dependent, off-diagonal axion-fermion couplings. The axion is part of a 5D complex scalar field charged under a U(1)$_{PQ}$ symmetry that is spontaneously broken in the bulk, and is insensitive to explicit PQ breaking on the UV boundary. Bulk Standard Model fermions interact with two Higgs doublets that can be localized on the UV boundary or propagate in the bulk to explain the fermion masses and mixings. When the Higgs doublets are localized on the…
Neutrinos can acquire both dynamic and geometric phases due to the non-trivial mixing between mass and flavour eigenstates. In this article, we derive the general expressions for all plausible gauge invariant diagonal and off-diagonal geometric phases in the three flavour neutrino model using the kinematic approach. We find that diagonal and higher order off-diagonal geometric phases are sensitive to the mass ordering and the Dirac CP violating phase $δ$. We show that, third order off-diagonal geometric phase ($Φ_{μeτ}$) is invariant under any cyclic or non-cyclic permutations of flavour indic…
We present an update of the global fit of the Standard Model electroweak sector to latest experimental results. We include new kinematic top quark and $W$ boson mass measurements from the LHC, a $\sin^2θ^{\ell}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ result from the Tevatron, and a new evaluation of the hadronic contribution to $α(M_Z^2)$. We present tests of the internal consistency of the electroweak Standard Model and updated numerical predictions of key observables. The electroweak data combined with measurements of the Higgs boson coupling strengths and flavour physics observables are used to constrain parameter…
Two Higgs doublet models are attractive scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, lepton-specific manifestations remain contenders to explain the observed discrepancy between the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ$ predicted within the Standard Model and recent observations at Fermilab and BNL. Dominant uncertainties that affect $a_μ$ have motivated the MUonE experiment to access the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution that impacts $a_μ$ via elastic muon-electron scattering. In this work, we contrast the high precision that is achievable within the MUonE con…
We analyse scalar leptoquark pair production at the LHC with predictions including $t$-channel lepton exchange contributions up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD. In particular, we calculate NLO-QCD predictions for off-diagonal production channels, {\it i.e.}\ channels that involve two different leptoquark eigenstates and are driven solely by diagrams involving Standard Model leptons in the $t$-channel at leading order, as opposed to diagonal channels where a pair of the same leptoquark eigenstate is produced. We find that reliable theoretical predictions for both channels require NLO accu…
Extended electroweak scalar sectors containing several doublet multiplets require flavour-aligned Yukawa matrices to prevent the appearance at tree level of unwanted flavour- changing neutral-current transitions. We analyse the misalignment induced by one-loop quantum corrections and explore possible generalizations of the alignment condition and their compatibility with current experimental constraints. The hypothesis of flavour alignment at a high scale turns out to be consistent with all known phenomenological tests.
We study implications of the four-fermion semileptonic operators at the low-energy and at electroweak (EW) scale in the framework of Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We show how the renormalization group (RG) running effects can play an important role in probing the \emph{generic flavour structure} of such operators. It is shown that at the 1-loop level, through RG running, depending upon the flavour structure, these operators can give rise to sizable effects at low energy in the electroweak precision (EWP) observables, the leptonic, quark, as well as the $Z$ boson flavour violat…
In view of the recent and future electroweak precision data accumulated at LEP and SLC, we systematically analyze possible new physics effects that may occur in the leptonic sector within the context of $SU(2)_R \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ theories. It is shown that nonobservation of flavour-violating $Z$-boson decays, lepton universality in the decays $Z\to l\bar{l}$, and universality of lepton asymmetries at the $Z$ peak form a set of complementary observables, yielding severe constraints on the parameter space of these theories. Contributions of new-physics effects to $R_b=Γ(Z\to b\ba…

We implement non-minimal flavour violation (NMFV) in the MSSM at low scale. In this framework, we propose benchmark points for the mSUGRA scenario including non-minimal flavour violation by evaluating a number of experimental low-energy, electroweak precision and cosmological constraints. We finally discuss phenomenological aspects of our NMFV scenario and present a numerical analysis of squark and gaugino production cross sections at the LHC.
This note presents an analysis of lepton-flavour-violating muon decays within the framework of a low-energy effective field theory that contains higher-dimensional operators allowed by QED and QCD symmetries. The decay modes $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to 3e$ are investigated below the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale, down to energies at which such processes occur, i.e. the muon mass scale. The complete class of dimension-5 and dimension-6 operators is studied systematically at the tree level, and one-loop contributions to the renormalisation group equations are fully taken into account. Current exp…
In this contribution we present an overview of recent results concerning the impact of a possible flavour dependence of the intrinsic quark transverse momentum on electroweak observables. In particular, we focus on the $q_T$ spectrum of electroweak gauge bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC and on the direct determination of the $W$ boson mass. We show that these effects are comparable in size to other non-perturbative effects commonly included in phenomenological analyses, and should thus be included in precise theoretical predictions for present and future hadron colliders.
We investigate a gauge extension of the Standard Model in light of the observed hints of lepton universality violation in $b \to c \ell ν$ and $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays at BaBar, Belle and LHCb. The model consists of an extended gauge group $\mathrm{SU(2)}_{1} \times \mathrm{SU(2)}_{2} \times \mathrm{U(1)}_Y$ which breaks spontaneously around the TeV scale to the electroweak gauge group. Fermion mixing effects with vector-like fermions give rise to potentially large new physics contributions in flavour transitions mediated by $W^{\prime}$ and $Z^{\prime}$ bosons. This model can ease tensi…
In the framework of gauged flavour symmetries, new fermions in parity symmetric representations of the standard model are generically needed for the compensation of mixed anomalies. The key point is that their masses are also protected by flavour symmetries and some of them are expected to lie way below the flavour symmetry breaking scale(s), which has to occur many orders of magnitude above the electroweak scale to be compatible with the available data from flavour changing neutral currents and CP violation experiments. We argue that, actually, some of these fermions would plausibly get masse…
Flavour effects play an important role in the statistical evolution of particle number densities in several particle physics phenomena. We present a fully flavour-covariant formalism for transport phenomena, in order to consistently capture all flavour effects in the system. We explicitly study the scenario of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL), and show that flavour covariance requires one to consider generically off-diagonal number densities, rank-4 rate tensors in flavour space, and non-trivial generalization of the discrete symmetries C, P and T. The flavour-covariant transport equations, obtained…
