The measurements carried out at LEP and SLC projected us into the precision era of electroweak physics. This has also been relevant in the theoretical interpretation of LHCb and Belle measurements of rare $B$ semileptonic decays, paving the road for new physics with the inference of lepton universality violation in $R_{K^{(*)}}$ ratios. The simplest explanation of these flavour anomalies -- sizeable one-loop contributions respecting Minimal Flavour Violation -- is currently disfavoured by electroweak precision data. In this work, we discuss how to completely relieve the present tension between electroweak constraints and one-loop minimal flavour violating solutions to $R_{K^{(*)}}$. We determine the correlations in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that highlight the existence of such a possibility. Then, we consider minimal extensions of the Standard Model where our effective-field-theory picture can be realized. We discuss how these solutions to $b \to s \ell \ell$ anomalies, respecting electroweak precision and without any new source of flavour violation, may point to the existence of a $Z^{\prime}$ boson at around the TeV scale, within the discovery potential of LHC, or to leptoquark scenarios.
While it is known that third family hypercharge models can explain the neutral current $B-$anomalies, it was hitherto unclear whether the $Z-Z^\prime$ mixing predicted by such models could simultaneously fit electroweak precision observables. Here, we perform global fits of several third family hypercharge models to a combination of electroweak data and those data pertinent to the neutral current $B-$anomalies. While the Standard Model is in tension with this combined data set with a $p-$value of $.00068$, simple versions of the models (fitting two additional parameters each) provide much impr…
The growing experimental indication of Lepton Flavour Universality Violation (LFUV) both in charged- and neutral-current semileptonic B-decays, has triggered many theoretical interpretations of such non-standard phenomena. Focusing on popular scenarios where the explanation of these anomalies requires New Physics at the TeV scale, we emphasise the importance of including electroweak corrections to obtain trustable predictions for the models in question. We find that the most important quantum effects are the modifications of the leptonic couplings of the W and Z vector bosons and the generatio…
Because of two 3 sigma anomalies, the Standard Model (SM) fit of the precision electroweak data has a poor confidence level, CL= 0.010. Since both anomalies involve challenging systematic issues, it might appear that the SM could still be valid if the anomalies resulted from underestimated systematic error. Indeed the CL of the global fit could then increase to 0.65, but that fit predicts a small Higgs boson mass, m_H=43 GeV, that is only consistent at CL=0.035 with the lower limit, m_H > 114 GeV, established by direct searches. The data then favor new physics whether the anomalous measurement…
The recent precise measurement of the $W$-mass by the CDF II collaboration is indicative of new physics beyond the Standard Model. On the other hand, a resolution of the longstanding muon $g-2$ anomaly also calls for additional dynamics. In this work, we accommodate the two aforementioned anomalies in an extension of the minimal Type-II seesaw model. That is, the minimal Type-II model is augmented with an additional doubly charged scalar and vector leptons. While a chirality-flip of the vector leptons can predict the observed value of muon $g-2$, the value of the recently reported $W$-mass can…
The results of high precision weak neutral current (WNC), Z-pole, and high energy collider electroweak experiments have been the primary prediction and test of electroweak unification. The electroweak program is briefly reviewed from a historical perspective. Current changes, anomalies, and things to watch are summarized, and the implications for the standard model and beyond discussed.
In order to analyze some low energy experimental anomalies, we charge with a non-universal $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry the standard model fermions, taking as a starting point the well-known scotogenic model. In order to have non-trivial solutions to the anomalies and the Yukawa constraints, we add three neutral singlet Dirac fermions. We have found two possible non-universal solutions which, as a matter of principle, are suitable to analyze family-dependent experimental anomalies.
The anomalies recently found by the LHCb collaboration in $B$-meson decays seem to point towards the existence of new physics coupled non-universally to muons and electrons. We show that a beyond-the-Standard-Model dynamics with these features naturally arises in models with a warped extra-dimension that aim to solve the electroweak Hierarchy Problem. The attractiveness of our set-up is the fact that the dynamics responsible for generating the flavor anomalies is automatically present, being provided by the massive Kaluza--Klein excitations of the electroweak gauge bosons. The flavor anomalies…
We discuss two models which are part of a class providing a common explanation for lepton flavor universality violation in $b \to s l^+ l^- $ decays, the dark matter (DM) problem and the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly. The $B$ meson decays and the muon $(g-2)$ anomalies are explained by additional one-loop diagrams with DM candidates. The models have one extra fermion field and two extra scalar fields relative to the Standard Model (SM). The $SU(3)$ quantum numbers are fixed by the interaction with the SM fermions in a new Yukawa Lagrangian that connects the dark and the visible sectors. We compare two …
Motivated by 3.9 sigma evidence of a CP-violating phase beyond the standard model in the like-sign dimuon asymmetry reported by DO, we examine the potential for two Higgs doublet models (2HDMs) to achieve successful electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) while explaining the dimuon anomaly. Our emphasis is on the minimal flavour violating 2HDM, but our numerical scans of model parameter space include type I and type II models as special cases. We incorporate relevant particle physics constraints, including electroweak precision data, b to s gamma, the neutron electric dipole moment, R_b, and perturba…
Implications are considered of the hypothesis that the symplectic group $Sp(n/2)$ is the spontaneously violated gauge group of n lepton flavors. Invariant Majorana masses are impossible in $Sp(n/2)$. For the local gauge symmetry $Sp(n/2)$ the dynamical spontaneous violation is only achievable for the number of flavors $n=6$ with simultaneous parity ($R,L-$symmetry) violation. The see-saw mechanism produces here three light and three heavy Dirac neutrinos. Majorana states are unavailable here. Neglecting heavy particles in the $R,L-$symmetric system of weak and electromagnetic interactions ($R,…

I consider anomalies in effective field theories (EFTs) of gauge fields coupled to fermions on an interval in AdS_5, and their holographic duals. The anomalies give rise to constraints on the consistent EFT description, which are stronger than the usual four-dimensional anomaly cancellation condition for the zero modes. Even though the anomalies occur on both boundaries of the interval, corresponding to both the UV and the IR of the holographic dual, they are nevertheless consistent with the non-renormalization of the anomaly and the 't Hooft matching condition. They give rise, in general, to …
I present a model addressing coherently the naturalness problem of the electroweak scale and the observed pattern of deviations from the Standard Model in semi-leptonic decays of $B$ mesons. The Higgs and the two scalar leptoquarks responsible for the $B$-physics anomalies, $S_1 = ({\bf \bar 3}, {\bf 1}, 1/3)$ and $S_3 = ({\bf \bar 3}, {\bf 3}, 1/3)$, arise as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of a new strongly coupled sector at the multi-TeV scale. I focus on an explicit realization of such a dynamics in terms of a new strongly coupled gauge interaction and extra vectorlike fermions charged under…
Present global fits to electroweak data are characterized by two results that differ from Standard Model expectations by about 3 sigma, the NuTeV measurement of sin^2theta_W and the FB b quark asymmetries measured at LEP. I review possible SM and new physics explanations of these anomalies and the implications for the indirect determination of the Higgs mass.
We estimate contributions from Kaluza-Klein excitations of gauge bosons and physical charge scalar for the explanation of the lepton flavor universality violating excess in the ratios $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ in 5 dimensional Universal Extra Dimensional scenario with non-vanishing boundary localized terms. This model is conventionally known as non-minimal Universal Extra Dimensional model. We obtain the allowed parameter space in accordance with constraints coming from $B_c \to τν$ decay, as well as those from the electroweak precision tests.
If the Standard Model is understood as the first term of an effective field theory, the anomaly-cancellation conditions have to be worked out and fulfilled order by order in the effective field-theory expansion. We bring attention to this issue and study in detail a subset of the anomalies of the effective field theories at the electroweak scale. The end result is a set of sum rules for the operator coefficients. These conditions, which are necessary for the internal consistency of the theory, lead to a number of phenomenological consequences when implemented in analyses of experimental data. …
We conduct a model-independent effective theory analysis of hypercharged fields with various spin structures towards understanding the diboson excess found in LHC run I, as well as possible future anomalies involving $WZ$ and $WH$ modes. Within the assumption of no additional physics beyond the standard model up to the scale of the possible diboson resonance, we show that a hypercharged scalar and a spin 2 particle do not have tree-level $WZ$ and $WH$ decay channels up to dimension 5 operators, and cannot therefore account for the anomaly, whereas a hypercharged vector is a viable candidate pr…
B-decays mediated by both charged currents and neutral currents have provided hints of violation of lepton flavour universality. By assuming an explanation of these anomalies in terms of new physics at the TeV scale affecting the third fermion generation, we review the relevant constraints. In particular we illustrate the effects of electroweak radiative corrections and their impact on a consistent interpretation of the data. The simplest scenario is ruled out and we briefly discuss the modifications required to simultaneously describe the whole set of anomalies.
We augment the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with a gauged family-dependent $U(1)$ to reproduce Yukawa textures compatible with experiment. In the simplest model with one extra chiral electroweak singlet field, acceptable textures require this $U(1)$ to be anomalous. The cancellation of its anomalies by a generic Green-Schwarz mechanism requires $\sin^2θ_w=3/8$ at the string scale, suggesting a superstring origin for the standard model.
We describe certain aspects of ${}^3He$ and compare them to related aspects of the standard electroweak model of particle physics. We note various similarities in the order parameter structure, defect structure, interactions with fermions and anomalies in the two systems. Many issues in the condensed matter literature that are often confusing to the particle physics reader and vice versa are clarified.
The recently updated measurement of the $W$-boson mass by the CDF collaboration exhibits a $7σ$ deviation from the SM expectation, which may imply a sign of new physics beyond the SM. The observed discrepancy could be explained by new fermions that carry the electroweak gauge charges and affect the vacuum polarization of gauge bosons. Notably, if the new fermions also have the same quantum numbers as of the SM quarks, they can mix with the latter and thus modify the penguin diagrams governing the $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transitions. Therefore, the $W$-boson mass shift could be related to the $…
The vector leptoquark representation, $U_μ= (3,1,2/3)$, was recently identified as an exceptional single mediator model to address experimental hints on lepton flavour universality violation in semileptonic $B$-meson decays, both in neutral ($b \to s μμ$) and charged ($b \to c τν$) current processes. Nonetheless, it is well-known that massive vectors crave an ultraviolet (UV) completion. We present the first full-fledged UV complete and calculable gauge model which incorporates this scenario while remaining in agreement with all other indirect flavour and electroweak precision measurements, as…
The discrepancies between the measurements of rare (semi-)leptonic $B$ decays and the corresponding Standard Model predictions point convincingly towards the existence of new physics for which a heavy neutral gauge boson ($Z^\prime$) is a prime candidate. However, the effect of the mixing of the $Z^\prime$ with the SM $Z$, even though it cannot be avoided by any symmetry, is usually assumed to be small and thus neglected in phenomenological analyses. In this letter we point out that a mixing of the naturally expected size leads to lepton flavour universal contributions, providing a very good f…
We report on our re-calculation of electroweak top-quark pair production in Standard Model extensions with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 particles at the LHC with substantial improvements. In particular, we allow for flavour--non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the Standard Model and beyond. As in our previous work we include NLO QCD corrections and match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the Standard Model and new physics interference effects. We consider the Sequential Standard Model, the Topcolour model as we…
We extend and improve upon our previous calculation of electroweak top-quark pair hadroproduction in extensions of the Standard Model with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 resonances. In particular, we allow for flavour-non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the SM and beyond including the contributions with $t$-channel $W$ and $W'$ bosons. All amplitudes are generated using the Recola2 package. As in our previous work, we include NLO QCD corrections and consistently match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the interfe…
We present a global likelihood function in the space of dimension-six Wilson coefficients in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The likelihood includes contributions from flavour-changing neutral current B decays, lepton flavour universality tests in charged- and neutral-current B and K decays, meson-antimeson mixing observables in the K, B, and D systems, direct CP violation in K -> ππ, charged lepton flavour violating B, tau, and muon decays, electroweak precision tests on the Z and W poles, the anomalous magnetic moments of the electron, muon, and tau, and several other prec…
Motivated by additional experimental hints of Lepton Flavour Universality violation in B decays, both in charged- and in neutral-current processes, we analyse the ingredients necessary to provide a combined description of these phenomena. By means of an Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach, based on the hypothesis of New Physics coupled predominantly to the third generation of left-handed quarks and leptons, we show how this is possible. We demonstrate, in particular, how to solve the problems posed by electroweak precision tests and direct searches with a rather natural choice of model param…
As shown in Ref. \cite{Allanach:2021kzj}, the Third Family Hypercharge ($Y_3$) Model changes the Standard Model prediction for $M_W$ whilst simultaneously explaining anomalies in $b\to s\ell\ell$ transitions via a heavy $Z^\prime$ gauge boson which is spawned by a spontaneously broken gauged $U(1)_{Y_3}$ symmetry. The 2022 CDF II measurement of $M_W$, which is far from the Standard Model prediction, somewhat disfavours the $Y_3$ model. Here, we generalise the gauge charge assignments to the anomaly-free combination $s Y_3 + t (B_3-L_3)$ and show that incorporating the 2022 CDF II measurement o…
Hints of violation of lepton flavor universality in semileptonic $B$ decays have prompted a renewed interest in leptoquarks at the low TeV scale. Among the different scenarios suggested, some happen to violate also lepton number, yet not much attention has been paid to the expected size of the associated lepton number violating processes. In this note we examine this issue. We find that there is a single leptoquark scenario compatible with the current size of the anomalies which also violates lepton number. In this scenario (Majorana) neutrino masses are radiatively generated. With the leptoqu…
Little Higgs theories often rely on an internal parity ("T-parity'') to suppress non-standard electroweak effects or to provide a dark matter candidate. We show that such a symmetry is generally broken by anomalies, as described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We study a simple SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3) Little Higgs scheme where we obtain a minimal form for the topological interactions of a single Higgs field. The results apply to more general models, including [SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3)]^4, SU(5)/SO(5), and SU(6)/Sp(6).
Explicit expressions are derived for the oblique parameters $S$ and $T$ in certain extensions of the standard model. In particular, we consider leptoquarks and bileptons, and find phenomenological constraints on their allowed masses. Leptoquarks suggested by the neutral and charged current anomalies at HERA can give improved agreement with both $S$ and $T$. If bileptons are the only new states, the singly-charged one must be heavier than the directly-established lower limit. Finally, we study SU(15) grand unification and show that there are regions of parameter space where the theory is compat…
The anomalous results of recent measurements on various $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ processes could be initial evidence of physics beyond the standard model (SM). Assuming this to be the case, we entertain the possibility that the underlying new physics also affects the rare nonleptonic decays of the $\bar B_s^0$ meson. We consider in particular new physics arising from the interactions of a heavy $Z'$ boson and investigate their influence on the decay modes $\bar B_s^0\to(η,η',ϕ)ω$, which receive sizable QCD- and electroweak-penguin contributions. These decays are not yet observed, and their rates are est…
Partial compositeness is a key ingredient of models where the electroweak symmetry is broken by a composite Higgs state. Recently, a UV completion of partial compositeness was proposed, featuring a new strongly coupled gauge interaction as well as new fundamental fermions and scalars. We work out the full flavor structure of the minimal realization of this idea and investigate in detail the consequences for flavor physics. While CP violation in kaon mixing represents a significant constraint on the model, we find many viable parameter points passing all precision tests. We also demonstrate tha…
We present a comprehensive numerical analysis of a four-dimensional model with the Higgs as a composite pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson that features a calculable Higgs potential and protective custodial and flavour symmetries to reduce electroweak fine-tuning. We employ a novel numerical technique that allows us for the first time to study constraints from radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, Higgs physics, electroweak precision tests, flavour physics, and direct LHC bounds on fermion and vector boson resonances in a single framework. We consider four different flavour symmetries in the comp…
We show that the anomalies in the $B\toππ$ decay channels, {\em viz.}, the large branching ratio of $B\toπ^0π^0$ and large direct CP asymmetry of $B\toπ^+π^-$, can both be explained, even in the framework of existing theoretical models which predict the relative strengths of the tree and the strong penguin amplitudes, if there is an abnormally large electroweak penguin contribution. We also critically examine the expectation of a similarly large electroweak penguin in the $B\toπK$ sector, and show that it can be accomodated, and may even be motivated from an SU(3) flavor symmetry between the $…
With the recent experimental hint of new physics from flavor physics anomalies, combined with the evidence from neutrino mass and dark matter, we consider a minimal extension of SM with a scalar leptoquark and a fermion triplet. The scalar leptoquark with couplings to leptons and quarks can explain lepton flavor non-universality observables $R_K$, $R_{K^{(*)}}$, $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{J/ψ}$. Neutral component of fermion triplet provides current abundance of dark matter in the Universe. The interesting feature of the proposal is that the minimal addition of these phenomenologically rich particle…
There are now two single measurements of precision observables that have major anomalies in the Standard Model: the recent CDF measurement of the $W$ mass shows a $7σ$ deviation and the Muon $g-2$ experiment at FNAL confirmed a long-standing anomaly, implying a $4.2 σ$ deviation. Doubts regarding new physics interpretations of these anomalies could stem from uncertainties in the common hadronic contributions. We demonstrate that these two anomalies pull the hadronic contributions in opposite directions by performing electroweak fits in which the hadronic contribution was allowed to float. The …
We present a minimal extension of the Standard Model that can simultaneously account for the anomalies in semi-leptonic B meson decays and the muon g-2, give large CP violation in charm decays (up to the value recently measured by LHCb), and provide thermal-relic dark matter, while evading all constraints set by other flavour observables, LHC searches, and dark matter experiments. This is achieved by introducing only four new fields: a vectorlike quark, a vectorlike lepton, and two scalar fields (a singlet and a doublet) that mix due to the electroweak symmetry breaking and provide the dark ma…
We explain anomalies currently present in various data samples used for the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of electron ($a_e$) and muon ($a_μ$) in terms of an Aligned 2-Higgs Doublet Model with right-handed neutrinos. The explanation is driven by one and two-loop topologies wherein a very light CP-odd neutral Higgs state ($A$) contributes significantly to $a_μ$ but negligibly to $a_e$, so as to revert the sign of the new physics corrections in the former case with respect to the latter, wherein the dominant contribution is due to a charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) and heavy neutrino…
We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model with flavor-dependent $U(1)'$, that has been proposed to explain some of $B$-meson anomalies recently reported at LHCb. The $U(1)'$ charge is chosen as a linear combination of anomaly-free $B_3-L_3$ and $L_μ-L_τ$. In this model, the flavor structure in the SM is restricted due to flavor-dependent $U(1)'$ charges, in particular, quark mixings are induced by a small vacuum expectation value of the extra Higgs doublet. As a result, it is natural to get sizable flavor-violating Yukawa couplings of heavy Higgs bosons involving the bottom quark. I…
In order to simultaneously account for both $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ anomalies in $B$-decays, we consider an extension of the Standard Model by a single vector leptoquark field, and study how one can achieve the required lepton flavour non-universality, starting from a priori universal gauge couplings. While the unitary quark-lepton mixing induced by $SU(2)_L$ breaking is insufficient, we find that effectively nonunitary mixings hold the key to simultaneously address the $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ anomalies. As an intermediate step towards various UV-complete models, we…
We present a gauged baryon number model as an example of models where all new fermions required to cancel out the anomalies help to solve phenomenological problems of the standard model (SM). Dark fermion doublets, along with the iso-singlet charged fermions, in conjunction with a set of SM-singlet fermions, participate in the generation of small neutrino masses through the Dirac-dark Zee mechanism. The other SM-singlets explain the dark matter in the Universe, while their coupling to an inert singlet scalar is the source of the $CP$ violation. In the presence of a strong first-order electrowe…
A two flavor color sextet quark sector added to QCD yields the {\it uniquely} unitary Critical Pomeron at high energy while also producing electroweak symmetry breaking. In this paper it is argued that a number of experimental phenomena in Cosmic Ray and hadron collider physics can be interpreted as evidence for the sextet sector. These phenomena include (1) Top quark production is via the eta_6 sextet quark pseudoscalar resonance - interference with the background will produce an asymmetry. (2) Longitudinal Z pairs, produced as sextet pions, provide a high mass excess cross-section that inclu…
We study lepton asymmetry evolution in plasma of the early Universe before the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) accounting for chirality flip processes via Higgs decays (inverse decays) entering equilibrium at temperatures below T_RL ~ 10 TeV, T_EW < T < T_RL. We solve appropriate kinetic equations for leptons and Higgs bosons taking into account the lepton number violation due to Abelian anomalies for right and left electrons and neutrinos in the self-consistent hypercharge field obeying Maxwell equations modified by the contribution of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. The v…
