I consider anomalies in effective field theories (EFTs) of gauge fields coupled to fermions on an interval in AdS_5, and their holographic duals. The anomalies give rise to constraints on the consistent EFT description, which are stronger than the usual four-dimensional anomaly cancellation condition for the zero modes. Even though the anomalies occur on both boundaries of the interval, corresponding to both the UV and the IR of the holographic dual, they are nevertheless consistent with the non-renormalization of the anomaly and the 't Hooft matching condition. They give rise, in general, to a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term in the four-dimensional, low-energy effective action, whose form I compute. Finally I discuss the relevance to holographic models of electroweak symmetry breaking. I show that the so-called `minimal composite Higgs models' have a consistent EFT description without a WZW term. In contrast, a variant of an earlier model of Contino, Nomura, and Pomarol does have a WZW term.
We present BPS solutions to a general class of Wess-Zumino models which extend previous results in the literature. We discuss their relation to amplitudes on threshold, and their application to scalar domain walls in Supersymmetric QCD. We also find partial expressions for Wess-Zumino models with softly broken supersymmetry.
Using a non-perturbative functional method, where the quantum fluctuations are gradually set up,it is shown that the interaction of a N=1 Wess-Zumino model in 2+1 dimensions does not get renormalized. This result is valid in the framework of the gradient expansion and aims at compensating the lack of non-renormalization theorems.
Using the nonrenormalization theorem and Pohlmeyer's theorem, it is proven that there cannot be an asymptotic safety scenario for the Wess-Zumino model unless there exists a non-trivial fixed point with (i) a negative anomalous dimension (ii) a relevant direction belonging to the Kaehler potential.
Sigma models in which the integer coefficient of the Wess-Zumino term vanishes are easy to construct. This is the case if all flavor symmetries are vectorlike. We show that there is a subset of SU(N)XSU(N) vectorlike sigma models in which the Wess-Zumino term vanishes for reasons of symmetry as well. However, there is no chiral sigma model in which the Wess-Zumino term vanishes for reasons of symmetry. This can be understood in the sigma model basis as a consequence of an index theorem for the axialvector coupling matrix. We prove this index theorem directly from the SU(N)XSU(N) algebra.
We prove that the Wess-Zumino model breaks supersymmetry in the low-energy limit. The mechanism is identical to the breaking of chiral symmetry in quantum chromodynamics as the low-energy limit is a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and the gap equation has a solution. This happens at a critical coupling at lower momenta. Instanton liquid plays an essential role in the behavior of the theory in this limit.
The Nelson-Seiberg theorem and its extensions relate supersymmetry breaking and R-symmetries in Wess-Zumino models. But their applicability may be limited by previously found non-generic counterexamples. Constructing a dataset of R-symmetric Wess-Zumino models is useful for studying the occurrence of such counterexamples as well as other purposes. This work gives a pedagogical review on the basics of supersymmetry in (3+1)-dimensions, Wess-Zumino models and their supergravity extensions, the Nelson-Seiberg theorem and its extensions. We present a preliminary construction of the dataset of R-sy…
It is known in previous literature that if a Wess-Zumino model with an R-symmetry gives a supersymmetric vacuum, the superpotential vanishes at the vacuum. In this work, we establish a formal notion of genericity, and show that if the R-symmetric superpotential has generic coefficients, the superpotential vanishes term-by-term at a supersymmetric vacuum. This result constrains the form of the superpotential which leads to a supersymmetric vacuum. It may contribute to a refined classification of R-symmetric Wess-Zumino models, and find applications in string constructions of vacua with small su…
Dynamical supersymmetry breaking is an important issue for applications of supersymmetry in particle physics. The functional renormalization group equations allow for a nonperturbative approach that leaves supersymmetry intact. Therefore they offer a promising tool to investigate dynamical supersymmetry breaking. Here we will employ this method to derive the phase diagram and a surprisingly rich RG fixed-point structure with corresponding critical exponents for the $\mathcal N=1$ Wess-Zumino model in two dimensions.
We construct the Bardeen anomaly and its related Wess-Zumino term in the supersymmetric standard model. In particular we show that it can be written in terms of a composite linear superfield related to supersymmetrized Chern-Simons forms, in very much the same way as the Green-Schwarz term in four-dimensional string theory. Some physical applications, such as the contribution to the g-2 of gauginos when a heavy top is integrated out, are briefly discussed.
We study aspects of Wess-Zumino models related to SUSY and R-symmetry breaking at tree-level. We present a recipe for constructing a wide class of tree-level SUSY and R-breaking models. We also deduce a general property shared by all tree-level SUSY breaking models that has broad application to model building. In particular, it explains why many models of direct gauge mediation have anomalously light gauginos (even if the R-symmetry is broken spontaneously by an order one amount). This suggests new approaches to dynamical SUSY breaking which can generate large enough gaugino masses.
The renormalization of N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory is analysed in the Wess-Zumino gauge, employing the Landau condition. An all orders proof of the renormalizability of the theory is given by means of the Algebraic Renormalization procedure. Only three renormalization constants are needed, which can be identified with the coupling constant, gauge field and gluino renormalization. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon-ghost-antighost vertex in the Landau gauge is shown to remain valid in N=1 Super Yang-Mills. Moreover, due to the non-linear realization of the supersymmetry in the Wess-Zu…
In a recent paper, based on the Skyrme model with the Wess-Zumino-Witten term including electromagnetism, Eto et al. pointed out an intriguing possibility that the Gell-Mann-Nishijima relation is corrected under the presence of back-ground electromagnetic fields, thereby being led to the conclusion that even a neutron acquires non-zero net charge in external magnetic fields. We point out that this remarkable conclusion is inseparably connected with an unwelcome feature of the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action, i.e. the non-conservation of source current of Maxwell equation.
We study the phase diagram of the two-dimensional N=1 Wess-Zumino model on the lattice using Wilson fermions and the fermion loop formulation. We give a complete nonperturbative determination of the ground state structure in the continuum and infinite volume limit. We also present a determination of the particle spectrum in the supersymmetric phase, in the supersymmetry broken phase and across the supersymmetry breaking phase transition. In the supersymmetry broken phase we observe the emergence of the Goldstino particle.
We propose to measure the Wess-Zumino anomaly contribution by considering angular distributions in the decays $τ\toν_τηπ^{-}π^{0}$, $τ\toν_τK^- π^{-} K^+ $ and $τ\toν_τK^- π^- π^+$. Radial excitations of the $K^*$, which cannot be seen in $e^++e^-$, should be observed in the $ K^- π^+ π^-$ decay channel.
We show that a class of Wess--Zumino models lead to inflation in supersymmetry and supergravity. This is due to the existence of a classically flat direction generic to these models. The pseudomodulus that parametrizes this flat direction is the inflaton and obtains a small mass due to either one--loop or supergravity corrections giving rise to slow--roll inflation. At the end of inflation, the fields roll to a supersymmetric vacuum that arises from explicit R symmetry breaking.
We reconstruct the action of $N=1, D=4$ Wess-Zumino and $N=1, 2, D=4$ super-Yang-Mills theories, using integral top forms on the supermanifold ${\cal M}^{(4|4)}$. Choosing different Picture Changing Operators, we show the equivalence of their rheonomic and superspace actions. The corresponding supergeometry and integration theory are discussed in detail. This formalism is an efficient tool for building supersymmetric models in a geometrical framework.
Recently, Kovner and Lublinsky proposed new small-x QCD evolution equations valid when the gluon density inside the target is low. The key element of their construction is the Wess-Zumino term which ensures the non-commutativity of valence charges. In this paper we clarify the origin and significance of this term by showing that it can be naturally incorporated in the effective theory of Color Glass Condensate. We also reexamine the renormalization group description in the high density (JIMWLK) regime.
We discuss the finite temperature extension of the anomalous Wess-Zumino -Witten lagrangian. The finite temperature S^1\times S^3 compactification makes a structure in disconnected sectors, corresponding to different baryon numbers appear naturally. The consistency of the anomalous functional is proved for arbitrary baryon number configurations. The anomalous behavior of the functional is shown to be consistent with the absence of finite temperature corrections to chiral anomalies in QCD, for each baryon number sector.
We provide a current expansion for the classical equations of motion of the massles Wess-Zumino model. In the low-energy limit, there appears a massive behavior for bosonic degrees of freedom and, at small coupling, the fermion field shows the same mass and supersymmetry is overall preserved. In the limit of the coupling running to infinity, the fermion field displays a different equation of motion, a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-like one, and we cannot draw an identical conclusion.
We discuss cosmological inflation in the minimal Wess-Zumino model with a single massive chiral supermultiplet. With suitable parameters and assuming a plausible initial condition at the start of the inflationary epoch, the model can yield scalar perturbations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) of the correct strength with a spectral index n_s ~ 0.96 and a tensor-to-scalar perturbation ratio r < 0.1, consistent with the Planck CMB data. We also discuss the possibility of topological inflation within the Wess-Zumino model, and the possibility of combining it with a seesaw model for neutri…
We propose a simple modification of the no-scale supergravity Wess-Zumino model of Starobinsky-like inflation to include a Polonyi term in the superpotential. The purpose of this term is to provide an explicit mechanism for supersymmetry breaking at the end of inflation. We show how successful inflation can be achieved for a gravitino mass satisfying the strict upper bound $m_{3/2}< 10^3$ TeV, with favoured values $m_{3/2}\lesssim\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV. The model suggests that SUSY may be discovered in collider physics experiments such as the LHC or the FCC.
In soliton models expressed in terms of the non-linear chiral field, the electric current has an anomalous gauge-field contribution as the baryon current does. We study the spin polarized Skyrmions coupled with the electromagnetic field via the gauged Wess-Zumino term and calculate configurations of the Skyrmion and the gauge field with boundary conditions to ensure the physical charge number for baryons. Although the electromagnetic field via the gauged Wess-Zumino term affects physical quantities in small amounts, we find that the magnetic field forms a dipole structure owing to a circular e…
We are studying scale properties of twist-2 conformal operators in supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model. In particular, we are interested in a construction of multiplicatively renormalized conformal operators. We show, that in order to find multiplicatively renormalized operators in this model, it is sufficient to find multiplicatively renormalized operators only for one member of operator supermultiplet. We found a closed analytical solution for fermionic conformal operator, which together with supersymmetry transformations could be used to find remained multiplicatively renormalized bosonic oper…
We analyze the finite temperature (T) extension of the Wess-Zumino- Witten functional, discussed in a previous work, to one loop in chiral perturbation theory. As a phenomenological application, we calculate finite temperature corrections to the amplitude of the $π^0$ decay into two photons. This calculation is performed in three limits : i)$T/M_π<<1$, ii)the chiral limit at finite T and iii)$T/M_π>>1$ ($M_π$ being the pion mass). The $T$-corrections tend to vanish in the chiral limit, where only the kaon contribution remains (although it is exponentially suppressed).
