The effects of Ni$^{2+}$ substitution on the structure (lattice parameters, cations distribution, average cations radii, cation-cation/anion bond lengths and angles) and the soft magnetic properties of Mg$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ ($0 \le x \le 1.0$) nanocrystals have been studied by x-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, transmittance electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The mostly inverse spinel structure was found in MgFe$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticles and the inversion factor is further increased by Ni-substitution up to a complete inversion in NiFe$_2$O$_4$. The synthesized ferrites with a small particle size (20 - 30 nm) exhibit soft magnetic properties of a single-domain behavior with critical domain size about 30 - 40 nm. An observed monotonic increase in magnetization and drastic decrease in coercivity at 5 K by Ni-substitution result in a lowest anisotropy constant Ku (2.8 kJ/m3) for x = 0.5. We discuss the evolution of magnetic properties by Ni-substitution in a correlation with a subsequent cations-redistribution between sites of the two sublattices and corresponding structural changes in the inter-ionic distances.
Small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, neutron backscattering and neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy are applied to reveal the structure of the ligand shell, the temperature-dependent diffusion properties and the phonon spectrum of PbS nanocrystals functionalized with oleic acid in deuterated hexane. The nanocrystals decorated with oleic acid as well as the desorbed ligand molecules exhibit simple Brownian diffusion with a Stokes-Einstein temperature-dependence and inhibited freezing. Ligand molecules desorbed from the surface show strong spatial confinement. The phonon spectrum of oleic a…
Single planar arrays of Ga(x)Fe(4-x)N magnetic nanocrystals embedded in GaN have been fabricated in an epitaxial process. The phase of the nanocrystals and their epitaxial relationship with the host matrix are studied $via$ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution x-ray diffraction. By changing the growth parameters and mode, the crystallographic phase and chemical composition of the nanocrystals can be varied on demand. In view of the different magnetic properties of the various phases, applications in room-temperature ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic spi…
Soft magnetic materials have low coercive fields and high permeability. Recently, nanocrystalline alloys obtained using annealing amorphous alloys have attracted much interest since nanocrystalline alloys with small grain sizes of tens of nanometers exhibit low coercive fields comparable to that of amorphous alloys. Since nanocrystalline soft magnetic materials attain remarkable soft magnetic properties by controlling the grain size, the crystal grains' microstructure has a substantial influence on the soft magnetic properties. In this research, we examined the magnetic properties of Fe-Si-B-P…
We report tight-binding (TB) and Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations of magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of free Fe (body centerd cubic) and Co (face centered cubic) slabs and nanocrystals. The nanocrystals are truncated square pyramids which can be obtained experimentally by deposition of metal on a SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate. For both elements our local analysis shows that the total MAE of the nanocrystals is largely dominated by the contribution of (001) facets. However, while the easy axis of Fe(001) is out-of-plane, it is in-plane for Co(001). This has direct consequences o…
In this study, severe plastic deformation by high pressure torsion is used as a fabrication method for nanocrystalline magnetic CuCo alloys in bulk quantities. By subsequent isothermal annealing, phase separation of the supersaturated solid solutions can be obtained. The magnetic properties of the as-processed and annealed materials have been studied systemically and correlated to the evolving nanostructures investigated in detail by transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. By additional high pressure torsion deformation at liquid nitrogen temperature the magnetic properties…
The integration of ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 with the Ge matrix is promising for spin injection in a silicon-compatible geometry. In this paper, we report the preparation of magnetic Mn5Ge3 nanocrystals embedded inside the Ge matrix by Mn ions implantation at elevated temperature. By X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, we observe crystalline Mn5Ge3 with variable size depending on the Mn ion fluence. The electronic structure of Mn in Mn5Ge3 nanocrystals is 3d6 configuration, the same as in bulk Mn5Ge3. A large positive magnetoresistance has been observed at low temperatures. It c…
Ferrite nanocrystals are interesting material due to their rich physical properties. Here we add nonmagnetic dopants Zn and Cu to nickel ferrite nanocrystals, Ni1-xMxFe2O4 (0<=x<=1, M{\in}{Cu, Zn}), and characterize how relevant properties of the samples are modified accordingly. Basically, these dopings cause a rearrangement of Fe+3 ions into the two preexisting octahedral and tetrahedral sites. In fact, this, we show, induces pertinent magnetic properties of the doped samples. In the case of the Cu-doping, the Jahn-Teller effect also emerges, which we identify through the FTIR Spectroscopy o…
In this paper we show that spinel ferrite nanocrystals (NiFe2O4, and CoFe2O4) can be texturally embedded inside a ZnO matrix by ion implantation and post-annealing. The two kinds of ferrites show different magnetic properties, e.g. coercivity and magnetization. Anomalous Hall effect and positive magnetoresistance have been observed. Our study suggests a ferrimagnet/semiconductor hybrid system for potential applications in magneto-electronics. This hybrid system can be tuned by selecting different transition metal ions (from Mn to Zn) to obtain various magnetic and electronic properties.
The paper describes the capability of magnetic softening of a coarse grained bulk material by a severe deformation technique. Connecting the microstructure with magnetic properties, the coercive field decreases dramatically for grains smaller than the magnetic exchange length. This makes the investigation of soft magnetic properties of severely drawn pearlitic wires very interesting. With the help of the starting two phase microstructure, it is possible to substantially refine the material, which allows the investigation of magnetic properties for nanocrystalline bulk material. Compared to the…
Phase-separated semiconductors containing magnetic nanostructures are relevant systems for the realization of high-density recording media. Here, the controlled strain engineering of Ga$δ$FeN layers with Fe$_y$N embedded nanocrystals (NCs) \textit{via} Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N buffers with different Al concentration $0<x_\mathrm{Al}<41$\% is presented. Through the addition of Al to the buffer, the formation of predominantly prolate-shaped $\varepsilon$-Fe$_3$N NCs takes place. Already at an Al concentration $x_\mathrm{Al}$\,$\approx$\,5\% the structural properties---phase, shape, orientation---as wel…
Colloidal cobalt-doped TiO2 (anatase) nanocrystals were synthesized and studied by electronic absorption, magnetic circular dichroism, transmission electron microscopy, magnetic susceptibility, cobalt K-shell X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The nanocrystals were paramagnetic when isolated by surface-passivating ligands, weakly ferromagnetic (Ms = 1.5 x 10-3 mB/Co2+ at 300 K) when aggregated, and strongly ferromagnetic (up to Ms = 1.9 mB/Co2+ at 300 K) when spin-coated into nanocrystalline films. X-ray absorption data reveal that cobalt …
For the first time, this study shows that distortion in a crystal structure due to magnetic effect is possible in a lattice with extreme chemical disorder. The multicomponent equimolar transition metal oxide (ME TMO), (Co,Cu,Mg,Ni,Zn)O, which is a high entropy oxide, has been attracting a lot of attention due to its unique application potential in many fields including electrochemical energy storage. In the present investigation, nanocrystalline ME TMO was synthesised by three bottom up methods. The presence of distortion in the rocksalt crystal structure, revealed by X ray diffraction and Ram…
The structure of the electron quantum size levels in spherical nanocrystals is studied in the framework of an eight--band effective mass model at zero and weak magnetic fields. The effect of the nanocrystal surface is modeled through the boundary condition imposed on the envelope wave function at the surface. We show that the spin--orbit splitting of the valence band leads to the surface--induced spin--orbit splitting of the excited conduction band states and to the additional surface--induced magnetic moment for electrons in bare nanocrystals. This additional magnetic moment manifests itself …
Research over the years has shown that the formation of the Fe$_3$Si phase in FINEMET (Fe-Si-Nb-B-Cu) alloys leads to superior soft magnetic properties. In this work, we use a CALPHAD approach to derive Fe-Si phase diagrams to identify the composition-temperature domain where the Fe$_3$Si phase can be stabilized. Thereafter, we have developed a precipitation model capable of simulating the nucleation and growth of Fe$_3$Si nanocrystals via Langer-Schwartz theory. For optimum magnetic properties, prior work suggests that it is desirable to precipitate Fe$_3$Si nanocrystals with 10-15 nm diamete…
Bi3+ Doped Nanocrystalline Ni-Co-Zn Spinel Ferrites: Tuning of Physical, Electrical, Dielectric and Magnetic Properties for Advanced Spintronics Applications
The structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline PrCo$_3$ prepared by high-energy milling technique have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction using the Rietveld method coupled to Curie temperature and magnetic measurements. The as-milled samples were subsequently annealed in temperature range from 750 to 1050 °C for 30 min to optimize the extrinsic properties. From x-ray studies of magnetic aligned samples, the magnetic anisotropy of this compounds is found uniaxial. The Curie temperature is 349 °K and no saturation reached at room temperature for applied field of 90 kOe. Th…
In an effort to elucidate the spin (rather than charge) degrees of freedom in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots, we report on a series of static and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements of colloidal CdSe quantum dots in ultra-high magnetic fields up to 45 Tesla. At low temperatures (1.5 K - 40 K), the steady-state photoluminescence (PL) develops a high degree of circular polarization with applied magnetic field, indicating the presence of spin-polarized excitons. Time-resolved PL studies reveal a marked decrease in radiative exciton lifetime with increasing magnetic fiel…
In the Fe-doped GaN phase-separated magnetic semiconductor GaFeN, the presence of embedded Ga$_y$Fe$_{4-y}$N nanocrystals determines the magnetic properties of the system. Here, through a combination of anomalous x-ray diffraction and diffraction anomalous fine structure, the local structure of Ga in self-assembled face-centered cubic (fcc) Ga$_y$Fe$_{4-y}$N nanocrystals embedded in wurtzite GaN thin layers is investigated in order to shed light onto the correlation between fabrication parameters, local structural arrangement and overall magnetic properties of the material system. It is found,…
The magnetic anisotropy of a planar array of Ga$_{x}$Fe$_{4-x}$N nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a GaN host is studied by ferromagnetic resonance. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are employed to determine the phase and distribution of the nanocrystals. The magnetic anisotropy is found to be primarily uniaxial with the hard axis normal to the NCs plane and to have a comparably weak in-plane hexagonal symmetry. The origin of the magnetic anisotropy is discussed taking into consideration the morphology of the nanocrystals, the epitaxial relations, strain effects and magnetic…
In the last decade, transition-metal-doped ZnO has been intensively investigated as a route to room-temperature diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs). However, the origin for the reported ferromagnetism in ZnO-based DMS remains questionable. Possible options are diluted magnetic semiconductors, spinodal decomposition, or secondary phases. In order to clarify this question, we have performed a thorough characterization of the structural and magnetic properties of Co- and Ni-implanted ZnO single crystals. Our measurements reveal that Co or Ni nanocrystals (NCs) are the major contribution of the…
The structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline PrCo$_3$ obtained from high energy milling technique are investigated by X-ray diffraction, Curie temperature determination and magnetic properties measurements are reported. The as-milled samples have been annealed in a temperature range of 1023 K to 1273 K for 30 mn to optimize the extrinsic properties. The Curie temperature is 349\,K and coercive fields of 55\,kOe at 10\,K and 12\,kOe at 293\,K are obtained on the samples annealed at 1023\,K. A simulation of the magnetic properties in the framework of micromagnetism has been performed…
We report on polarization-resolved resonant photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of bright (spin-1) and dark (spin-2) excitons in colloidal CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots. Using high magnetic fields to 33 T, we resonantly excite (and selectively analyze PL from) spin-up or spin-down excitons. At low temperatures (<4K) and above ~10 T, the spectra develop a narrow, circularly polarized peak due to spin-flipped bright excitons. Its evolution with magnetic field directly reveals a large (1-2 meV), intrinsic fine structure splitting of bright excitons, due to anisotropic exchange. These findings are…
Magnetic doping of semiconductor nanostructures is actively pursued for applications in magnetic memory and spin-based electronics. Central to these efforts is a drive to control the interaction strength between carriers (electrons and holes) and the embedded magnetic atoms. In this respect, colloidal nanocrystal heterostructures provide great flexibility via growth-controlled `engineering' of electron and hole wavefunctions within individual nanocrystals. Here we demonstrate a widely tunable magnetic sp-d exchange interaction between electron-hole excitations (excitons) and paramagnetic manga…
The effect of sintering temperatures (Ts) on the structural and magnetic properties of Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 (NZFO) ferrites synthesized by conventional double sintering method has been reported. The samples are sintered at 1200, 1250 and 1300 °C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the formation of a single phase cubic spinel structure of the sample. The magnetic parameters such as saturation magnetization, Ms; coercive field, Hc; remanent magnetization, Mr and Bohr magneton, μB are determined and well compared with reported values. The obtained values are found to be 71.94 emu/gm and 1.2 …
In contrast to bulk materials, nanoscale crystal growth is critically influenced by size- and shape-dependent properties. However, it is challenging to decipher how stoichiometry, in the realm of mixed-valence elements, can act to control physical properties, especially when complex bonding is implicated by short and long-range ordering of structural defects. Here, solution-grown iron-oxide nanocrystals (NCs) of the pilot wustite system are found to convert into iron-deficient rock-salt and ferro-spinel sub-domains, but attain a surprising tetragonally distorted local structure. Cationic vacan…
Semiconductor nanocrystals are being used as hosts to trap and manipulate single spins. Spins in nanocrystals can have different properties than their bulk counterparts, owing both to quantum confinement and surface effects. We will show that spins can be generated in nanocrystals by the insertion of impurities, either magnetic or not, or by magnetic polarons present at dangling bonds at their surfaces. This chapter reports theoretical contributions to this field, where the Density Functional Theory is used to simulate these functionalized nanocrystals.
In semiconductors, quantum confinement can greatly enhance the interaction between band carriers (electrons and holes) and dopant atoms. One manifestation of this enhancement is the increased stability of exciton magnetic polarons in magnetically-doped nanostructures. In the limit of very strong 0D confinement that is realized in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, a single exciton can exert an effective exchange field $B_{\rm{ex}}$ on the embedded magnetic dopants that exceeds several tesla. Here we use the very sensitive method of resonant photoluminescence (PL) to directly measure the pre…
The charge ordered La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3-δ}$ (LSFO) in bulk and nanocrystalline forms are investigated using ac and dc magnetization, Mössbauer, and polarised neutron studies. A complex scenario of short range charge and magnetic ordering is realized from the polarised neutron studies in nanocrystalline specimen. This short range ordering does not involve any change in spin state and modification in the charge disproportion between Fe$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{5+}$ compared to bulk counterpart as evident in the Mössbauer results. The refinement of magnetic diffraction peaks provides magnetic momen…
Voids adjacent to both cubic (ZnS-type) and hexagonal (NiAs-type) Mn-rich nanocrystals are characterized using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy in annealed Ga0.995Mn0.005As magnetic semiconductor specimen grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Nano-beam electron diffraction measurements suggest that the nanocrystals exhibit deviations in lattice parameter from that of bulk MnAs. In situ annealing inside the electron microscope is used to study the nucleation, coalescence, and grain growth of individual nanocrystals. After annealing at 903 K, the magnetic transition temperature o…
Magnetic, Optoelectronic, and Rietveld refined structural properties of Al3+ substituted nanocrystalline Ni-Cu spinel ferrites: An experimental and DFT based study
We report magneto-photoluminescence studies of strongly quantum-confined "0-D" diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), realized in Mn$^{2+}$-doped ZnSe/CdSe core/shell colloidal nanocrystals. In marked contrast to their 3-D (bulk), 2-D (quantum well), 1-D (quantum wire), and 0-D (self-assembled quantum dot) DMS counterparts, the ubiquitous yellow emission band from internal \emph{d-d} ($^4T_1 \rightarrow ^6A_1$) transitions of the Mn$^{2+}$ ions in these nanocrystals is \emph{not} suppressed in applied magnetic fields and \emph{does} become circularly polarized. This polarization tracks the Mn$…
X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetization measurements are employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Mn-rich (Mn,Ga)As nanocrystals embedded in GaAs. These nanocomposites are obtained by moderate (400C) and high temperature (560 and 630C) annealing of (Ga,Mn)As layers with Mn concentrations between 0.1 and 2%, grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 270oC. Decomposition of (Ga,Mn)As is already observed at the lowest annealing temperature of 400C for layers with initial Mn content of 1% and 2%. Both cubic and hexagonal (Mn,Ga)As nanocrystals, with simil…
Perovskite manganite La0.5Ca0.5-x xMnO3 (LCMO) nanomaterials were elaborated using the sucrose modified auto combustion method. Rietveld refinements of the X-ray diffraction patterns of the crystalline structure confirm a single-phase orthorhombic state with Pbnm space group (No. 62). The Ca-vacancies were voluntarily created in the LCMO structure in order to study their influence on the magnetic behaviour in the system. The magnetic susceptibility was found to be highly enhanced in the sample with Ca-vacancies. Paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition was evidenced in both samples aroun…
The magnetic properties of biologically-produced magnetite nanocrystals biomineralized by four different magnetotactic bacteria were compared to those of synthetic magnetite nanocrystals and large, high quality single crystals. The magnetic feature at the Verwey temperature, $T_{V}$, was clearly seen in all nanocrystals, although its sharpness depended on the shape of individual nanoparticles and whether or not the particles were arranged in magnetosome chains. The transition was broader in the individual superparamagnetic nanoparticles for which $T_{B}<T_{V}$, where $T_{B}$ is the superparama…
Initial powder mixtures of Cu, Fe and Co are exposed to severe plastic deformation by high-pressure torsion to prepare solid solutions. A broad range of compositions is investigated, whereas this study aims at the synthesis of soft magnetic materials and therefore at the formation of a homogeneous and nanocrystalline microstructure. For intermediate ferromagnetic contents, high-pressure torsion at room temperature yields single-phase supersaturated solid solutions. For higher ferromagnetic contents, two consecutive steps of high-pressure torsion deformation at different temperatures yield the …
In this paper we report photovoltaic devices fabricated from PbS nanocrystals and the conducting polymer poly MEH-PPV. This composite material was produced via a new single-pot synthesis which solves many of the issues associated with existing methods. Our devices have white light power conversion efficiencies under AM1.5 illumination of 0.7% and single wavelength conversion efficiencies of 1.1%. Additionally, they exhibit remarkably good ideality factors (n=1.15). Our measurements show that these composites have significant potential as soft optoelectronic materials.
We measure the photoluminescence (PL) lifetime, $τ$, of excitons in colloidal PbSe nanocrystals (NCs) at low temperatures to 270~mK and in high magnetic fields to 15~T. For all NCs (1.3-2.3~nm radii), $τ$ increases sharply below 10~K but saturates by 500~mK. In contrast to the usual picture of well-separated ``bright" and ``dark" exciton states (found, e.g., in CdSe NCs), these dynamics fit remarkably well to a system having two exciton states with comparable - but small - oscillator strengths that are separated by only 300-900 $μ$eV. Importantly, magnetic fields reduce $τ$ below 10~K, consist…
Au nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic spin polarization and show diameter dependence in magnetization. The magnetic moment per Au atom in the particle attains its maximum value at a diameter of about 3 nanometer (nm) in the Magnetization-Diameter curve. Because Au metal is a typical diamagnetic material, its ferromagnetic polarization mechanism is thought to be quite different from the ferromagnetism observed in transition metals. The size effect strongly suggests the existence of some spin correlation effect at the nanoscale. The so-called ``Fermi hole effect'' is the most probable one given…
Elevated-temperature polyol-based colloidal-chemistry approach allows for the development of size-tunable (50 and 86 nm) assemblies of maghemite iso-oriented nanocrystals, with enhanced magnetization. 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometric experiments show that the ferrimagnetic cluster-like colloidal entities exhibit a remarkable enhancement (4 to 5 times) in the transverse relaxivity, if compared to that of the superparamagnetic contrast agent Endorem, over an extended frequency range (1-60 MHz). The marked increase of the transverse relaxivity r2 at a clinical magnetic field stren…
We study the low-temperature magneto-photoluminescence (PL) from individual CdSe nanocrystals. Nanocrystals having a small "bright" exciton fine structure splitting ($<$0.5 meV) exhibit a conventional left- and right-circularly polarized Zeeman PL doublet in applied magnetic fields. In contrast, nanocrystals with large fine structure splitting ($>$1 meV) show an anomalous magneto-PL polarization, wherein the lower-energy peak becomes circularly polarized with increasing field, while the higher-energy peak remains linearly polarized. This unusual behavior arises from strong mixing between the a…
In this paper we report on detailed temperature and magnetic field dependence of m agnetization of IV-VI semiconductor PbTe doped with mixed valence transition metal Cr$^{2+/3+}$. The material is studied solely by an integral superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer in order to quantitatively determine the contribution of single substitutional Cr$^{3+}$ as well as of various Cr-Te magnetic nanocrystals, including their identification. The applied experimental procedure reveals the presence of about $10^{19}$~cm$^{-3}$ paramagnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions formed via self-ionization of Cr…
Magnetooptical properties of (Ga,Mn)N layers containing various concentrations of Fe-rich nanocrystals embedded in paramagnetic (Ga,Fe)N layers are reported. Previous studies of such samples demonstrated that magnetization consists of a paramagnetic contribution due to substitutional diluted Fe ions as well as of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components originating from Fe-rich nanocrystals, whose relative abundance can be controlled by the grow conditions. The nanocrystals are found to broaden and to reduce the magnitude of the excitonic features. However, the ferromagnetic contribution…
Understanding the interplay between the structural, chemical and physical properties of nanomaterials is crucial for designing new devices with enhanced performance. In this regards, doping of metal oxides is a general strategy to tune size, morphology, charge, lattice, orbital and spin degrees of freedoms and has been shown to affect nanomaterials properties for photoelectrochemical water splitting, batteries, catalysis, magnetic applications and optics. Here we report the role of lattice small polaron in driving the morphological transition from nearly isotropic to nanowire crystals in Si do…
We demonstrate the use of model order reduction and neural networks for estimating the hysteresis properties of nanocrystalline permanent magnets from microstructure. With a data-driven approach, we learn the demagnetization curve from data-sets created by grain growth and micromagnetic simulations. We show that the granular structure of a magnet can be encoded within a low-dimensional latent space. Latent codes are constructed using a variational autoencoder. The mapping of structure code to hysteresis properties is a multi-target regression problem. We apply deep neural network and use param…
The role of Cr incorporation into the ZnO were probed through investigations into the structural, optical and magnetic properties. Zn1-xCrxO with x = 0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05, nanoparticles were prepared by solution combustion method. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal, all the synthesized samples are in single hexagonal wurtzite crystal structures, indicating that Cr3+ ions substitute the Zn2+ ions without altering the structure. The crystallite size and microstrain were calculated using the Willamson-Hall method and found to be 36 +- 2 nm for ZnO and it reduced with the increase of …
We report on the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of GaN:Fe and (Ga,Fe)N layers on c-sapphire substrates and their thorough characterization via high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), spatially-resolved energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), photoluminescence (PL), Hall-effect, electron-paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetometry employing a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). A combination of TEM and EDS reveals the presence of coherent nanocrystals presumably FexN with t…
We report on isothermal pulsed (20 ms) field magnetization, temperature dependent AC - susceptibility, and the static low magnetic field measurements carried out on 10 nm sized Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 nanoparticles (PCMO10). The saturation field for the magnetization of PCMO10 (~ 250 kOe) is found to be reduced in comparison with that of bulk PCMO (~300 kOe). With increasing temperature, the critical magnetic field required to 'melt' the residual charge-ordered phase decays exponentially while the field transition range broadens, which is indicative of a Martensite-like transition. The AC - susceptibil…
In this paper we report the structural and property (magnetic and electrical transport) measurements of nanocrystals of half-doped $\mathrm{La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3}$(LCMO) synthesized by chemical route, having particle size down to an average diameter of 15nm. It was observed that the size reduction leads to change in crystal structure and the room temperature structure is arrested so that the structure does not evolve on cooling unlike bulk samples. The structural change mainly affects the orthorhombic distortion of the lattice. By making comparison with observed crystal structure data under hy…
Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are attracting increasing attention because they exhibit unconventional magnetic properties due to crystal imperfections in their usually non-magnetic 2D structure. This work aims to investigate the magnetic response of self-engineered Se deficient TiSe$_2$ thin films, synthesized using chemical vapour deposition. We demonstrate tunability of the ferromagnetic order with the introduction of Au atoms using low energy Au ion implantation, which works as a controlling knob to vary the stoichiometry of Se in TiSe$_{2-x}$. The corresponding isothermal…
We aim to investigate relationships between select processing parameters or inputs (composition, temperature, annealing time) and two structural parameters, specifically, the mean radius and volume fraction of the Fe$_3$Si nanocrystals. To this end, we have deviced a combined CALPHAD and machine learning approach that led to well-calibrated metamodels able to predict structural parameters quickly and accurately for any desired inputs. In order to generate data for the mean radius and volume fraction of Fe$_3$Si nanocrystals, we have used a precipitation model based in the software Thermocalc t…
We study the ferromagnetism of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 in bulk polycrystalline, nanocrystalline and amorphous phase. The structural change from crystalline phase to amorphous phase exhibited a systematic decrease of TC(paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature) and spontaneous magnetization (MS). The experimental results suggested few more features, e.g., appearance of large magnetic irreversibility in the temperature dependence of magnetization, lack of magnetic saturation at high magnetic field, blocking of magnetization below TB, and enhancement of coercivity. In addition, the magnetic …

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) using synchrotron radiation, X-ray free electron lasers (X-FELs), high harmonic generation, soft X-ray lasers, and optical lasers has found broad applications across several disciplines. An active research direction in CDI is to determine the structure of single particles with intense, femtosecond X-FEL pulses based on diffraction-before-destruction scheme. However, single-shot 3D structure determination has not been experimentally realized yet. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of single-shot 3D structure determination of individual nanocry…
Magnetic materials, both hard and soft, are used extensively in several components of particle accelerators. Magnetically soft iron-nickel alloys are used as shields for the vacuum chambers of accelerator injection and extraction septa; Fe-based material is widely employed for cores of accelerator and experiment magnets; soft spinel ferrites are used in collimators to damp trapped modes; innovative materials such as amorphous or nanocrystalline core materials are envisaged in transformers for high-frequency polyphase resonant convertors for application to the International Linear Collider (ILC…
Ultrathin semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) with at least one dimension below their exciton Bohr radius receive a rapidly increasing attention due to their unique physicochemical properties such as strong quantum confinement, large surface-to-volume ratio, and giant oscillator strength. These superior properties highly depend on the shape and crystal phase of semiconductor NCs. Slight changes in the shape and phase of NCs can cause significant changes in their properties. Therefore, it is crucial to controllably synthesize semiconductor NCs. Here, we demonstrate not only the synthesis of robust…
