Voids adjacent to both cubic (ZnS-type) and hexagonal (NiAs-type) Mn-rich nanocrystals are characterized using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy in annealed Ga0.995Mn0.005As magnetic semiconductor specimen grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Nano-beam electron diffraction measurements suggest that the nanocrystals exhibit deviations in lattice parameter from that of bulk MnAs. In situ annealing inside the electron microscope is used to study the nucleation, coalescence, and grain growth of individual nanocrystals. After annealing at 903 K, the magnetic transition temperature of the specimen likely to be dominated by the presence of cubic ferromagnetic nanocrystals.
The formation of various uncommon shaped voids along with regular triangular and square voids in the epitaxial 3C-SiC films on Si has been investigated by optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Heteroepitaxial growth of 3C-SiC films on Si (001) and (111) substrates has been performed using hexamethyldisilane in a resistance-heated chemical vapor deposition reactor. The influence of the orientation of the Si substrate in determining the shape of the voids has clearly been observed. In addition, the growth period and the growth-temperature have been considered as the major parameters to…
Surface acoustic waves in two-dimensional phononic crystals consisting of a square array of shallow, two to three micron deep cylindrical void inclusions are studied computationally via the finite element method. For the [110] propagation direction on a (001) GaAs half-space, the conventional Rayleigh wave modes, the layered substrate-associated Sezawa and Lamb modes, the high frequency longitudinal surface waves and bulk waves exhibit hybridization and modal interaction. The longitudinal, vertical shear and horizontal shear bulk wave dispersions are observed to be significant thresholds for s…
We consider a two phase elastic thin film with soft inclusions subject to bending dominated deformations. The soft (void) phase may comprise asymptotically small droplets within the elastic matrix. We perform a dimension reduction analysis and obtain a novel `Blake-Zisserman-Kirchhoff' model that combines Kirchhoff's classical plate theory with Blake-Zisserman type surface energy contributions at cracks, folds and the boundary of voids.

Glassy carbon is a graphene-rich form of elemental carbon obtained from pyrolysis of polymers, which is composed of three-dimensionally arranged, curved graphene fragments alongside fractions of disordered carbon and voids. Pyrolysis encompasses gradual heating of polymers above 900 degree C under inert atmosphere, followed by cooling to room temperature. Here we report on an experimental method to perform in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) for the direct visualization of microstructural evolution in a pyrolyzing polymer in the 500-1200 degree C temperature range…

An unusual variety of impact-related diamond from the Popigai impact structure - yakutites - is characterized by complementary methods including optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, radiography and tomography, infra-red, Raman and luminescence spectroscopy providing structural information at widely different scales. It is shown that relatively large graphite aggregates may be transformed to diamond with preservation of many morphological features. Spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction data indicate that the yakutite matrix represents bulk nanocrystalline diamond. For the first time, features o…
Dynamic dielectric and mechanical responses of the microcomposites of the ferroelastic-dielectric type were studied in this paper. The mechanical inclusions-matrix interactions have influence on the mechanical moduli of the composite. We have studied a mechanical response of the composite which consists of the material M and of the other material I in which dispersion of mechanic moduli of particles is present. The inclusions of the dielectric material in the ferroelastic matrix has the effect on the dielectric response of the microcomposite. We have found conditions for which the inclusions h…
We have studied the properties of relatively thick (about 120 nm) magnetic composite films grown by pulsed laser deposition method using (GaSb)$_{0.59}$(MnSb)$_{0.41}$ eutectic compound as a target for sputtering. For the studied films we have observed ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect above the room temperature, it manifests the presence of spin-polarized carriers. Electron microscopy, atomic and magnetic force microscopy results suggests that films under study have homogenous columnar structure in the bulk while MnSb inclusions accumulate near it's surface. This is in good agreement w…
Understanding transformations under electron beam irradiation requires mapping the structural phases and their evolution in real time. To date, this has mostly been a manual endeavor comprising of difficult frame-by-frame analysis that is simultaneously tedious and prone to error. Here, we turn towards the use of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) to automatically determine the Bravais lattice symmetry present in atomically-resolved images. A DCNN is trained to identify the Bravais lattice class given a 2D fast Fourier transform of the input image. Monte-Carlo dropout is used for determ…
Magnetic mineral inclusions, as iron oxides or sulfides, occur quite rarely in natural diamonds. Nonetheless, they represent a key tool not only to unveil the conditions of formation of host diamonds, but also to get hints about the paleointensity of the geomagnetic field present at times of the Earth's history otherwise not accessible. This possibility is related to their capability to carry a remanent magnetization dependent on their magnetic history. However, comprehensive experimental studies on magnetic inclusions in diamonds have been rarely reported so far. Here we exploit X-ray diffrac…
Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is now the primary tool for exploring functional materials on the atomic level. Often, features of interest are highly localized in specific regions in the material, such as ferroelectric domain walls, extended defects, or second phase inclusions. Selecting regions to image for structural and chemical discovery via atomically resolved imaging has traditionally proceeded via human operators making semi-informed judgements on sampling locations and parameters. Recent efforts at automation for structural and physical discovery have pointed towards …
The interplay between unconventional superconductivity and quantum critical ferromagnetism in the U-Ge compounds represents an open problem in strongly correlated electron systems. Sample quality can have a strong influence on both of these ordered states in the compound UCoGe, as is true for most unconventional superconductors. We report results of a new approach at UCoGe crystal growth using a floating-zone method with potential for improvements of sample quality and size as compared with traditional means such as Czochralski growth. Single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe …
