Nanometric inclusions filled with nitrogen, located adjacent to FenN (n = 3 or 4) nanocrystals within (Ga,Fe)N layers, are identified and characterized using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). High-resolution STEM images reveal a truncation of the Fe-N nanocrystals at their boundaries with the nitrogen-containing inclusion. A controlled electron beam hole drilling experiment is used to release nitrogen gas from an inclusion in situ in the electron microscope. The density of nitrogen in an individual inclusion is measured to be 1.4 +- 0.3 g/cm3. These observations provide an explanation for the location of surplus nitrogen in the (Ga,Fe)N layers, which is liberated by the nucleation of FenN (n> 1) nanocrystals during growth.

We propose a new analysis approach for scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on the Voronoi-cell integration method to determine the three-dimensional position of the InZn and VZn defect complex in ZnO. Using state of the art simulation software and hardware, we propose using a method of calculating Michelson Contrast on simulated images to determine the optimal acceptance angles to use in an experimental setting. The effect of defect position, DFT-relaxation and cooling the sample to liquid nitrogen temperatures is investigated. DFT-relaxation is shown to be of consequence to…
Correlated electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging using functionalized nanoparticles is a promising nanoscale probe of biological structure and function. Nanodiamonds (NDs) that contain CL-emitting color centers are particularly well suited for such applications. The intensity of CL emission from NDs is determined by a combination of factors, including: particle size; density of color centers; efficiency of energy deposition by electrons passing through the particle; and conversion efficiency from deposited energy to CL emission. We report experiments and numerical simulation…
To assess long-term structural integrity under operational conditions in nuclear reactors, SS 316LN with varying nitrogen content is subjected to thermal aging for 20000 hours at 650°C. While the annealing twins and heterogeneous grain evolution by bimodal division are independent of chemical composition, the type, size and morphology of evolving secondary phases are characteristic for nitrogen concentration. Colour contrast in bright field optical microscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy reveals the presence of three major precipitate phases; M23(C, N)6, Fe2Mo intermetallics …
Stroboscopic X-ray Diffraction Microscopy of Dynamic Strain in Diamond Thin-film Bulk Acoustic Resonators for Quantum Control of Nitrogen Vacancy Centers
The application of imaging techniques based on ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) sensors in diamond to characterise electrical devices has been proposed, but the compatibility of NV sensing with operational gated devices remains largely unexplored. Here we fabricate graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) directly on the diamond surface and characterise them via NV microscopy. The current density within the gated graphene is reconstructed from NV magnetometry under both mostly p- and n-type doping, but the exact doping level is found to be affected by the measurements. Additionally, we obse…
We report on the structural and superconducting properties of nanocrystalline tungsten thin films growth by sputtering at room temperature with an N2:Ar mixture (N2 from 3% to 50%). The crystalline phases were identified by comparing pristine and thermal annealed thin films. For N2/(Ar+N2) mixtures between 3 and 10 %, the films display nanocrystalline beta-W phase. Coexistence of beta-W and W2N phases are observed for gas mixtures with N2 between 20 % and 40%. A detailed study of the superconducting properties as function of the thickness was performed for W films growth with 8 % N2 mixtures. …
Nitrogen-containing Surface Ligands Lead to False Positives for Photofixation of N$_2$ on Metal Oxide Nanocrystals: An Experimental and Theoretical Study
Nanocomposite metal oxide thin films exhibit assuring qualities in the field of gas sensors because of the collective opportunities provided by the heterointerface formation. In this work, we present the synthesis of nitrogen doped mesoporous In$_2$O$_3$-ZnO nano-composite thin films by simple wet chemical method using urea as the nitrogen precursor. SEM investigation suggests formation of mesoporous nano-composite thin films, where the uniformity of surface pore distribution depends on the relative proportion of In$_2$O$_3$ and ZnO in the composites. HRTEM investigation suggest formation of s…
Thin layers of near-surface nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond substrates are the workhorse of NV-based widefield magnetic microscopy, which has applications in physics, geology and biology. Several methods exist to create such NV layers, which generally involve incorporating nitrogen atoms (N) and vacancies (V) into the diamond through growth and/or irradiation. While there have been detailed studies of individual methods, a direct side-by-side experimental comparison of the resulting magnetic sensitivities is still missing. Here we characterise, at room and cryogenic temperatures, $\ap…
Self-supported electrocatalysts being generated and employed directly as electrode for energy conversion has been intensively pursued in the fields of materials chemistry and energy. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy to prepare freestanding hierarchically structured, nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes functionalized with Janus-type Co/CoP nanocrystals (termed as HNDCM-Co/CoP), which were successfully applied as a highly-efficient, binder-free electrode in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefited from multiple structural merits, such as high degree of graphitization, …
Individual, luminescent point defects in solids so called color centers are atomic-sized quantum systems enabling sensing and imaging with nanoscale spatial resolution. In this overview, we introduce nanoscale sensing based on individual nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We discuss two central challenges of the field: First, the creation of highly-coherent, shallow NV centers less than 10 nm below the surface of single-crystal diamond. Second, the fabrication of tip-like photonic nanostructures that enable efficient fluorescence collection and can be used for scanning probe imaging bas…
Detailed structural and electrical properties of ultra-nano-crystalline diamond (UNCD) films grown in H$_\text{2}$/CH$_\text{4}$/N$_\text{2}$ plasma were systematically studied as a function of deposition temperature ($T_d$) and nitrogen content ($\%$ N$_2$) to thoroughly evaluate their effects on conductivity. $T_d$ was scanned from 1000 to 1300 K for N$_2$ fixed at 0, 5, 10 and 20 $\%$. It was found that even the films grown in the synthetic gas mixture with no nitrogen could be made as conductive as 1$-$10$^{-2}$ $Ω$ cm with overall resistivity of all the films tuned over 4 orders of magnit…
Powered by the mutual developments in instrumentation, materials andtheoretical descriptions, sensing and imaging capabilities of quantum emitters insolids have significantly increased in the past two decades. Quantum emitters insolids, whose properties resemble those of atoms and ions, provide alternative waysto probing natural and artificial nanoscopic systems with minimum disturbance andultimate spatial resolution. Among those emerging quantum emitters, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is an outstanding example due to its intrinsicproperties at room temperature (highly-lumi…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond can be used for nanoscale sensing with atomic resolution and sensitivity; however, it has been observed that their properties degrade as they approach the diamond surface. Here we report that in addition to degraded spin coherence, NV centers within nanometers of the surface can also exhibit decreased fluorescence contrast for optically detected electron spin resonance (OD-ESR). We demonstrate that this decreased OD-ESR contrast arises from charge state dynamics of the NV center, and that it is strongly surface-dependent, indicating that surface enginee…
Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reduction of N2 to ammonia (NH3) is emerging as the potential alternative to overcome the standard Haber-Bosch approach. In this communication, solar N2 reduction was demonstrated with molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) co-catalyst assisted indium gallium nitride (InGaN) nanowires. The effect of aiding Mo2C on InGaN NWs arrests the dark current and demonstrated the saturation current under illumination was briefly elucidated. Large NH3 production of 7.2 gh-1cm-2 with high Faradaic efficiency of 12.6 % was realized at -0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode for the Mo2C/GaN/…
