We study the ferromagnetism of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 in bulk polycrystalline, nanocrystalline and amorphous phase. The structural change from crystalline phase to amorphous phase exhibited a systematic decrease of TC(paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature) and spontaneous magnetization (MS). The experimental results suggested few more features, e.g., appearance of large magnetic irreversibility in the temperature dependence of magnetization, lack of magnetic saturation at high magnetic field, blocking of magnetization below TB, and enhancement of coercivity. In addition, the magnetic phase transition near to TC has changed from first order character in bulk sample to second order character in nanocrystalline and amorphous samples. We understand the observed magnetic features as the effects of decreasing particle size and increasing magnetic (spin- lattice) disorder. We noted that magnetic dynamics of amorphous samples is distinctly different from the nanocrystalline samples. The ferromagnetism of amorphous samples are comparable with the properties of reported amorphous ferromagnetic nanoparticles. We also demonstrate the effect of disorder shell in controlling the dynamics of ferromagnetic cores.
Light-matter strong coupling in the vacuum limit has been shown to enhance material properties over the past decade. Oxide nanoparticles are known to exhibit weak ferromagnetism due to vacancies in the lattice. Here we report the 700-fold enhancement of the ferromagnetism of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ nanoparticles under cooperative strong coupling at room temperature. The magnetic moment reaches 0.90 $μ_{\rm B}$/mol, and with such a high value, it competes with YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ superconductivity at low temperature. This strong ferromagnetism at room temperature suggest that strong coupling …
In a quest of enriching the area of d0 magnetism in oxide materials, we have undertaken to study Mg-doped TiO2 compounds. The Ti1-xMgxO2 (x=0, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) nanoparticles were prepared by solid-state reaction route. The X-ray diffractions (XRD) patterns of these samples indicate single phase of tetragonal rutile-structure of TiO2. The refinement of the XRD patterns reveals no change in the crystallographic lattice parameters in comparison to pure TiO2 upon Mg doping and it indicates that Mg2+ ions do not enter core grains and form core/shell structure. SEM observations reveal the unifor…
Iron oxide nanoparticles have tremendous scientific and technological potential in a broad range of technologies, from energy applications to biomedicine. To improve their performance, single-crystalline and defect-free nanoparticles have thus far been aspired. However, in several recent studies defect-rich nanoparticles outperform their defect-free counterparts in magnetic hyperthermia and magnetic particle imaging. Here, an overview on the state-of-the-art of design and characterization of defects and resulting spin disorder in magnetic nanoparticles is presented with a focus on iron oxide n…
Microscopic description of Raman spectra in nanopowders of nonpolar crystals is accomplished by developing the theory of disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes. Analytical treatment of this problem is performed, and line shape and width are determined as functions of phonon quantum numbers, nanoparticle shape, size, and the strength of disorder. The results are found to be strongly dependent on either the broadened line is separated or it is overlapped with other lines of the spectrum. Three models of disorder, i.e. weak point-like impurities, weak smooth random potentia…
Pure phase and mixed phase TiO$_2$ nanoparticles have been produced using a pyrolytic method from a non-aqueous carboxylate precursor. The precursor was prepared by a multiphase cation exchange using pentanoic acid (C$_4$H$_9$COOH). The thermal stability, polymorph content, morphology, size distribution and surface region of the produced nanoparticles were studied by TGA/DSC, XRD, FTIR and TEM. High quality monodisperse nanoparticles have been produced in the size range from 7 to 27 nm. The nanoparticles showed room temperature ferromagnetism revealed by VSM within bound polaron model. The car…
Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder locate…
Spin Disorder and Magnetic Anisotropy in Fe3O4 Nanoparticles
Monte Carlo simulations of ${\rm Ni Fe_2O_4}$ Nanoparticles
Co2FeAl (CFA) nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes were synthesized by chemical route. The effect of the size of NPs upon the structure and magnetization compared to its bulk counterpart was investigated. The structure and composition were determined from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy. XRD analysis shows that the samples are having single (A2-type) disordered phase. Magnetization measurements suggest that the samples are soft ferromagnetic in nature with very low coercivity. Enhanced magnetic properties like saturation magnetization, coercive force, retentivity, and Curie-t…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of half-metallic ferromagnetism in equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy CoRuMnSi. Room temperature XRD analysis reveals that the alloy crystallizes in L21 disorder instead of pristine Y-type structure due to 50% swap disorder between the tetrahedral sites, i.e., Co and Ru atoms. Magnetization measurements reveal a net magnetization of 4 $μ_B$ with Curie temperature of ~780 K. Resistivity measurement reveals the presence of localization effect below 35 K while above 100 K, a linear dependence is observed. Resistivity behavior indica…
Disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes in nanoparticles of nonpolar crystals is studied numerically. The methods previously used to treat phonons in defectless particles are adjusted for numerical evaluation of the disordered problem. Imperfections in the form of Gaussian and binary disorders as well as surface irregularities are investigated thoroughly in a wide range of impurity concentrations and disorder strengths. For dilute and weak point-like impurities the regimes of separated and overlapped phonon levels are obtained and the behavior of the linewidth predicted t…
We synthesized pure and Co-doped (6.25 12.5 at.) ZrO$_2$ nanopowders in order to study their magnetic properties.We analyzed magnetic behavior as a function of the amount of Co and the oxygenation, which was controlled by low pressure thermal treatments. As prepared pure and Co-doped samples are diamagnetic and paramagnetic respectively. Ferromagnetism can be induced by performing low pressure thermal treatments, which becomes stronger as the dwell time of the thermal treatment is increased. This behavior can be reversed, recovering the initial diamagnetic or paramagnetic behavior, by performi…

The proliferation of optical, electron, and scanning probe microscopies gives rise to large volumes of imaging data of objects as diversified as cells, bacteria, pollen, to nanoparticles and atoms and molecules. In most cases, the experimental data streams contain images having arbitrary rotations and translations within the image. At the same time, for many cases, small amounts of labeled data are available in the form of prior published results, image collections, and catalogs, or even theoretical models. Here we develop an approach that allows generalizing from a small subset of labeled dat…
