The magnetic properties of disordered graphene and irradiated graphite are systematically studied using a combination of mean-field Hubbard model and first-principles calculations. By considering large-scale disordered models of graphene, I conclude that only single-atom defects can induce ferromagnetism in graphene-based materials. The preserved stacking order of graphene layers is shown to be another necessary condition for achieving a finite net magnetic moment of irradiated graphite. Ab initio calculations of hydrogen binding and diffusion and of interstitial-vacancy recombination further confirm the crucial role of stacking order in $π$-electron ferromagnetism of proton-bombarded graphite.
Graphite has been used as neutron moderator or reflector in many nuclear reactors. The irradiation of graphite in a nuclear reactor results in a complex population of defects. Heating of the irradiated graphite at high temperatures results in annihilation of the defects with release of an unusually large energy, called the Wigner energy. From various experiments on highly irradiated graphite samples from CIRUS reactor at Trombay and ab-initio simulations, we have for the first time identified various 2-, 3- and 4-coordinated topological structures in defected graphite, and provided microscopic…

We report on the magnetic properties of monovacancy defects in neutron-irradiated graphite, probed by $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The bulk paramagnetism of the defect moments is revealed by the temperature dependence of the NMR frequency shift and spectral linewidth, both of which follow a Curie behavior, in agreement with measurements of the macroscopic magnetization. Compared to pristine graphite, the fluctuating hyperfine fields generated by the defect moments lead to an enhancement of the $^{13}$C nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ by about two orders of m…
Structural as well as magnetization studies have been carried out on graphite samples irradiated by neutrons over 50 years in the CIRUS research reactor at Trombay. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the defects in irradiated graphite samples are not well annealed and remain significant up to high temperatures much greater than 653 K where the Wigner energy is completely released. We infer that the remnant defects may be intralayer Frenkel defects, which do not store large energy, unlike the interlayer Frenkel defects that store the Wigner energy. Magnetization studies on the irradiated g…
Multi-layer graphene with rhombohedral stacking is a promising carbon phase possibly displaying correlated states like magnetism or superconductivity due to the occurrence of a flat surface band at the Fermi level. Recently, flakes of thickness up to 17 layers were tentatively attributed ABC sequences although the Raman fingerprint of rhombohedral multilayer graphene is currently unknown and the 2D resonant Raman spectrum of Bernal graphite not understood. We provide a first principles description of the 2D Raman peak in three and four layers graphene (all stackings) as well as in Bernal, rhom…

Void defect is a possible origin of ferromagnetic like feature of pure carbon material. Applying density functional theory to void defect induced graphene nano ribbon (GNR), a detailed relationship between multiple spin state and structure change was studied. An equitorial triangle of an initial initial void having six electrons is distorted to isosceles triangle by rebonding carbon atoms. Among possible spin states, the most stable state was Sz=2/2. The case of Sz=4/2 is remarkable that initial flat ribbon turned to three dimentional curled one having highly polarized spin configuration at ri…
