In this work we study the local behavior of geodesics in the neighborhood of a curvature singularity contained in stationary and axially symmetric space-times. Apart from these properties, the metrics we shall focus on will also be required to admit a quadratic first integral for their geodesics. In particular, we search for the conditions on the geometry of the space-time for which null and time-like geodesics can reach the singularity. These conditions are determined by the equations of motion of a freely-falling particle. We also analyze the possible existence of geodesics that do not become incomplete when encountering the singularity in their path. The results are stated as criteria that depend on the inverse metric tensor along with conserved quantities such as energy and angular momentum. As an example, the derived criteria are applied to the Plebanski-Demianski class of space-times. Lastly, we propose a line element that describes a wormhole whose curvature singularities are, according to our results, inaccessible to causal geodesics.

A general study of the stability of equatorial circular orbits in static axially symmetric gravitating systems is presented. Important circular geodesics as the marginally stable orbit, the marginally bounded orbit and the photon orbit are analyzed. We found general expressions for the radius, specific energy, specific angular momentum and the radius of the marginally stable orbit, both for null and timelike circular geodesics. Solutions expressed in cylindrical coordinates, oblate spheroidal coordinates, and prolate spheroidal coordinates are considered. We show that all null circular orbits …
The complete sets of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in Taub--NUT--(anti-)de Sitter, Kerr--(anti-)de Sitter and also in general Plebanski--Demianski space--times without acceleration are presented. The solutions are given in terms of the Kleinian sigma functions.
Recent observations of the orbits of star clusters around Sgr $A^\star$, imaging of black holes and gravitational waveforms of merging compact objects require a detailed understanding of the general relativistic geodesic motion. We came up with a method to provide all the possible geodesics in an axially symmetric space-time. The Kerr metric is explicitly worked out, recovering the Schwarzschild geodesics in the static limit. We also found the most general Killing tensor and its associated constant of motion for an axisymmetric space-time. The relevance of these results is crucial to understan…
We present an axially symmetric, asymptotically flat empty space solution of the Einstein field equations containing a naked singularity. The spacetime is regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possess a true curvature singularity. The spacetime is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme and is locally isometric to the metrics of case IV in the Kinnersley classification of type D vacuum metrics. Additionally, the spacetime also shows the evolution of closed timelike curves (CTCs) from an initial hypersurface free from CTCs.
Regular generalizations of spherically and axially symmetric metrics and their properties are considered. Newton gravity law generalizations are reduced for null geodesic.
Since the development of Relativity theory, a variety of solutions have been found around Einstein field equations, depending on the time-space. For instance, we can find the axially symmetric space which describes a rotanting black hole. To understand this astrophysics objects, we must do a ray tracing, which is a simulation of photon's trajectory from the black hole to observer. Since are millions of photons recievied by the observer, we need a computational tool to resolve this problem for generating the image of black hole. Thanks to the YNOGK- GEOKERR code, we can visualise the black hole…
Using a framework based on the 1+3 formalism we carry out a study on axially and reflection symmetric perfect and geodesic fluids, looking for possible models of sources radiating gravitational waves. Therefore, the fluid should be necessarily shearing, for otherwise the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor vanishes, leading to a vanishing of the super-Poynting vector. However, for the family of perfect, geodesic fluids considered here, it appears that all possible cases reduce to conformally flat, shear--free, vorticity-free, fluids, i.e Friedmann-Roberston-Walker. The super-Poynting vector vanis…
The visibility of the shell-focusing singularity in Szekeres space-time - which represents quasi-spherical dust collapse - has been studied on numerous occasions in the context of the cosmic censorship conjecture. The various results derived have assumed that there exist radial null geodesics in the space-time. We show that such geodesics do not exist in general, and so previous results on the visibility of the singularity are not generally valid. More precisely, we show that the existence of a radial geodesic in Szekeres space-time implies that the space-time is axially symmetric, with the ge…
In the Bondi-Sachs formulation of General Relativity space-time is foliated via a family of null cones. If these null cones are defined such that their vertices are traced by a regular world-line then the metric tensor has to obey regularity conditions at the vertices. We explore these regularity conditions when the world line is a time-like geodesic. In particular, we solve the Einstein equations for the Bondi-Sachs metric near the vertices for axially symmetric vacuum space- times. The metric is calculated up to third order corrections with respect to a flat metric along the time-like geodes…
Vacuum static, axially symmetric space-times in $D$-dimensional general relativity with a Ricci-flat internal space are discussed. It is shown, in particular, that some of the monopole-type solutions are free of curvature singularities and their source can be a disk membrane bounded by a ring with a string or branching type singularity. Another possibility is a wormhole configuration where a particle can penetrate to another spatial infinity by passing through a ring with a string or branching type singularity. The results apply, in particular, to vacuum and scalar-vacuum configurations in con…
We study the geodesics of the singularity free metric considered in the preceding Paper I and show that they are complete. This once again demonstrates the absence of singularity. The geodesic completeness is established in general without reference to any particular matter distribution. The metric is globally hyperbolic and causally stable. The question of inapplicability of the powerful singularity theorems in this case is discussed.
We investigate a particular regularization of big bang singularity, which remains within the domain of 4-dimensional general relativity but allowing for degenerate metrics. We study the geodesics and geodesic congruences in the modified Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe. In particular, we calculate the expansion of timelike and null geodesic congruences. Based on these results, we also briefly discuss the cosmological singularity theorems.
In this article we extend a recent theorem proven by Hod (Phys. Lett. B, {\bf 727}, 345--348, 2013) to $n$-dimensional Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories, which gives an upper bound for the photon sphere radii of spherically symmetric black holes. As applications of these results we give a universal upper bound for the real part of quasinormal modes in the WKB limit and a universal lower bound for the position of the first relativistic image in the strong lensing regime produced by these type of black holes. For the axially-symmetric case, we also make some general comments (independe…
We investigate the dynamics of a neutral and a charged particle around a black hole in modified gravity immersed in magnetic field. Our focus is on the scalar-tensor-vector theory as modified gravity. We are interested to explore the conditions on the energy of the particle under which it can escape to infinity after collision with another neutral particle in the vicinity of the black hole. We calculate escape velocity of particle orbiting in the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) after the collision. We study the effects of modified gravity on the dynamics of particles. Further we discuss…
In this article, we present a gravitational collapse null dust solution of the Einstein field equations. The spacetime is regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possesses a naked curvature singularity, and admits one parameter isometry group, a generator of axial symmetry along the cylinder which has closed orbits. The space- time admits closed timelike curves (CTCs) which develop at some particular moment in a causally well-behaved manner and may represent a Cosmic Time Machine. The radial geodesics near to the singularity, and the gravitational Lensing (GL) will be discussed…
It is generally assumed that naked singularities must be physically excluded, as they could otherwise introduce unpredictable influences in their future null cones. Considering geodesics for a naked Reissner-Nordstrom singularity, it is found that the singularity is effectively clothed by its repulsive nature. Regarding electron as naked singularity, the size of the clothed singularity (electron) turns out to be classical electro-magnetic radius of the electron, to an observer falling freely from infinity, initially at rest. The size shrinks for an observer falling freely from infinity, with a…
We study the general properties of axially symmetric dissipative configurations under the shear-free condition. The link between the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor and the vorticity, as well as the role of the dissipative fluxes, are clearly exhibited. As a particular case we examine the geodesic fluid. In this latter case, the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor always vanishes, suggesting that no gravitational radiation is produced during the evolution. Also (for the geodesic case), in the absence of dissipation, the system evolves towards a FRW spacetime if the expansion scalar is positive.
We investigate geodesics in specific Kundt type N (or conformally flat) solutions to Einstein's equations. Components of the curvature tensor in parallelly transported tetrads are then explicitly evaluated and analyzed. This elucidates some interesting global properties of the spacetimes, such as an inherent rotation of the wave-propagation direction, or the character of singularities. In particular, we demonstrate that the characteristic envelope singularity of the rotated wave-fronts is a (non-scalar) curvature singularity, although all scalar invariants of the Riemann tensor vanish there.
We analyze here the structure of non-radial nonspacelike geodesics terminating in the past at a naked singularity formed as the end state of inhomogeneous dust collapse. The spectrum of outgoing nonspacelike null geodesics is examined analytically. The local and global visibility of the singularity is also examined by integrating numerically the null geodesics equations. The possible implications of existence of such families towards the appearance of the star in late stages of gravitational collapse are considered. It is seen that the outgoing non-radial geodesics give an appearance to the na…
Recently, several new characteristics have been introduced to describe null geodesic structure of strong gravitational field, such as photon regions, transversely trapping surfaces and some generalizations. They give an alternative and concise way to describe lensing and shadow features of compact objects with strong gravitational field without recurring to complete integration of the geodesic equations. Here we test this construction in the case of the Weyl metrics when geodesic equations are non-separable, and thus can not be integrated analytically, while the above characteristic surfaces a…
We investigate the causal structure of the Harada-Iguchi-Nakao (HIN)'s exact solution in detail, which describes the dynamical formation of naked singularity in the collapse of a regular spherical cluster of counterrotating particles. There are three kinds of radial null geodesics in the HIN spacetime. One is the regular null geodesics and the other two are the null geodesics which terminate at the singularity. The central massless singularity is timelike naked singularity and satisfies the strong curvature condition along the null geodesics except for the instant of singularity formation. The…
The issue of the local visibility of the shell-focussing singularity in marginally bound spherical dust collapse is considered from the point of view of the existence of future-directed null geodesics with angular momentum which emanate from the singularity. The initial data (i.e. the initial density profile) at the onset of collapse is taken to be of class $C^3$. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a naked singularity are derived in terms of the data. It is shown that there exist future-directed non-radial null geodesics emanating from the singularity if and only i…
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the Lense-Thirring precession frequency and periastron precession of the relativistic bound orbits in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes. We show that the precession frequencies of a stationary test gyroscope are quite unique in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes, and therefore, one can easily distinguish them from the slowly rotating Kerr black hole spacetime. On the other hand, we also show that in slowly rotating Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan (JMN1) naked singularity spacetime, negative precession of the timelike bound orbits is…
Mallett has exhibited a cylindrically symmetric spacetime containing closed timelike curves produced by a light beam circulating around a line singularity. I analyze the static version of this spacetime obtained by setting the intensity of the light to zero. Some null geodesics can escape to infinity, but all timelike geodesics in this spacetime originate and terminate at the singularity. Freely falling matter originally at rest quickly attains relativistic velocity inward and is destroyed at the singularity.
There are non-radial null geodesics emanating from the shell focusing singularity formed at the symmetric center in a spherically symmetric dust collapse. In this article, assuming the self-similarity in the region filled with the dust fluid, we study these singular null geodesics in detail. We see the time evolution of the angular diameter of the central naked singularity and show that it might be bounded above by the value corresponding to the circular null geodesic in the Schwarzschild spacetime. We also investigate the angular frequency of a physical field which propagates along the singul…
In this paper, we derive the solutions of orbit equations for a class of naked singularity spacetimes, and compare these with timelike orbits, that is, particle trajectories in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. The Schwarzschild and naked singularity spacetimes considered here can be formed as end state of a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a matter cloud. We find and compare the perihelion precession of the particle orbits in the naked singularity spacetime with that of the Schwarzschild black hole. We then discuss different distinguishable physical properties of timelike…
We show that the existence of appropriate spatial homothetic Killing vectors is directly related to the separability of the metric functions for axially symmetric spacetimes. The density profile for such spacetimes is (spatially) arbitrary and admits any equation of state for the matter in the spacetime. When used for studying axisymmetric gravitational collapse, such solutions do not result in a locally naked singularity.
We analyze the behavior of causal geodesics on a Kerr-de Sitter spacetime with particular emphasis on their completeness property. We set up an initial value problem (IVP) whose solutions lead to a global understanding of causal geodesics on these spacetime. Causal geodesics that avoid the rotation axis are complete except the ones that hit the ring-like curvature singularity and those that encounter the ring singularity are necessary equatorial ones. We also show the existence of geodesics that cross or lie on the rotation axis. The equations governing the latter family show the repulsive nat…
According to Penrose effect, particles with negative energy can exist in the ergospheres of rotating black holes. We analyze geodesics for such particles and show that there are no circular and elliptic orbits in the ergosphere of a rotating black hole. We also show that there are geodesics which begin and terminate at the singularity and present the conditions under which such geodesics do not begin and terminate at the singularity.
In this work the possible geodesic completeness of an electromagnetic dipole wormhole is studied in detail. The space-time contains a curvature singularity and belongs to a class of solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a coupled scalar field. Specifically, a numerical analysis is performed to examine congruences of null geodesics that are directed toward the singularity. The results found here show that, depending on the strength of the coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields, the wormhole can be either geodesically incomplete or complete. We then focus on those worm…
We study here the behaviour of non-spacelike geodesics in dust collapse models in order to understand the casual structure of the spacetime. The geodesic families coming out, when the singularity is naked, corresponding to different initial data are worked out and analyzed. We also bring out the similarity of the limiting behaviour for different types of geodesics in the limit of approach to the singularity.
The gravitational strength of the central singularity in spherically symmetric space-times is investigated. Necessary conditions for the singularity to be gravitationally weak are derived and it is shown that these are violated in a wide variety of circumstances. These conditions allow conclusions to be drawn about the nature of the singularity without having to integrate the geodesic equations. In particular, any geodesic with a non-zero amount of angular momentum which impinges on the singularity terminates in a strong curvature singularity.
Roger Penrose's 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics recognises that his identification of the concepts of "gravitational singularity" and an "incomplete, inextendible, null geodesic" is physically very important. The existence of an incomplete, inextendible, null geodesic doesn't say much, however, if anything, about curvature divergence, nor is it a helpful definition for performing actual calculations. Physicists have long sought for a coordinate independent method of defining where a singularity is located, given an incomplete, inextendible, null geodesic, that also allows for standard analytic tec…
In this talk a previous theorem on geodesic completeness of diagonal cylindrical spacetimes will be generalized to cope with the nondiagonal case. A sufficient condition for such spacetimes to be causally geodesically complete will be given
The sum of squared epicyclic frequencies of nearly circular motion ($ω_r^2+ω_θ^2$) in axially symmetric configurations of Newtonian gravity is known to depend both on the matter density and on the angular velocity profile of circular orbits. It was recently found that this sum goes to zero at the photon orbits of Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. However, these are the only relativistic configurations for which such result exists in the literature. Here, we extend the above formalism in order to describe the analogous relation for geodesic motion in arbitrary static, axially symmetric, asympt…
We investigate motion of test particles in exact spacetimes with an expanding impulsive gravitational wave which propagates in Minkowski, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter universe. Using the continuous form of these metrics we derive explicit junction conditions and simple refraction formulae for null, timelike and spacelike geodesics crossing a general impulse of this type. In particular, we present a detailed geometrical description of the motion of test particles in a special class of axially symmetric spacetimes in which the impulse is generated by a snapped cosmic string.
A 5-dimensional gravity theory, motivated by the brane world picture, with factorisable metric and with Kaluza scalar $G_{55}(r)$, is shown to give rise to a positive contribution to the Raychaudhuri equation. This inhibits the focusing of geodesics and possibly cause non-focusing of the geodesics. This feature is translated into the situation in which the universe has an infinite age and hence no beginning avoiding the big bang singularity.
In this paper we present an analysis to determine the existence of singularities in spatially homogeneous anisotropic universes filled with nonlinear electromagnetic radiation. These spaces are conformal to Bianchi spaces admitting a three parameter group of motions G$_3$. For these models we study geodesic completeness. It is shown that with nonlinear electromagnetic field some of the Bianchi spaces are geodesically complete, like G$_3$IX and G$_3$VIII; however, completeness depends on the curvature of the space. When certain topology is assumed, Bianchi G$_3$IX presents geodesics that are im…
Our current picture of black hole gravitational collapse relies on two assumptions: i) the resulting singularity is hidden behind an event horizon -- weak cosmic censorship conjecture -- and ii) spacetime eventually settles down to a stationarity state. In this setting, it follows that the minimal area containing an apparent horizon is bound by the square of the total ADM mass (Penrose inequality conjecture). Following Dain et al. 2002, we construct numerically a family of axisymmetric initial data with one or several marginally trapped surfaces. Penrose and related geometric inequalities are …
We derive an expression for the expansion of outgoing null geodesics in spherical dust collapse and compute the limiting value of the expansion in the approach to singularity formation. An analogous expression is derived for the spherical collapse of a general form of matter. We argue on the basis of these results that the covered as well as the naked singularity solutions arising in spherical dust collapse are stable under small changes in the equation of state.
The behaviour of Jacobi fields along a time-like geodesic running into an isotropic singularity is studied. It is shown that the Jacobi fields are crushed to zero length at a rate which is the same in every direction orthogonal to the geodesic. We show by means of a counter-example that this crushing effect depends crucially on a technicality of the definition of isotropic singularities, and not just on the uniform degeneracy of the metric at the singularity.
An important aspect of General Relativity is to study properties of geodesics. A useful tool for describing geodesic behavior is the geodesic deviation equation. It allows to describe the tidal properties of gravitating objects through the curvature of spacetime. This article focuses on the study of the axially symmetric Taub-NUT metric. We study tidal effects in this metric using the geodesic deviation equation. Radial geodesics along the symmetry axis of spacetime are considered. We show that all spatial components of tidal forces always change sign under the event horizon. We find a solutio…
The exact axisymmetric and static solution of the Einstein equations coupled to axisymmetric and static gravitating scalar (or phantom) field is presented. The spacetimes modified by the scalar field are explicitly given for the so called $γ$-metric and Erez-Rosen metric with quadrupole moment $q$, influence of the additional deformation parameters $γ_*$ and $q_*$ generated by the scalar field is studied. It is shown that the null energy condition is satisfied for the phantom field, but it is not satisfied for the standard scalar field. The test particle motion in the both modified $γ$-metric …
A new method is proposed, that establishes a one to one correspondance between the whole set of static axially symmetric vacuum GR solutions and a specific class of stationary axially symmetric scalar-Einstein solutions having a given mass and a given angular momentum. The method explicitly takes advantage of the Kerr metric Ricci flatness. This also results in a class of stationary axially symmetric vacuum, ie Kerrlike, Brans-Dicke solutions. A particular solution, that is asymptotically flat, is more closely considered. It converges to Kerr for a vanishing scalar charge, but fails to converg…
The problem of a rigorous theory of singularities in space-times with torsion is addressed. We define geodesics as curves whose tangent vector moves by parallel transport. This is different from what other authors have done, because their definition of geodesics only involves the Christoffel connection, though studying theories with torsion. We propose a preliminary definition of singularities which is based on timelike or null geodesic incompleteness, even though for theories with torsion the paths of particles are not geodesics. The study of the geodesic equation for cosmological models with…
The interior of the Kerr solution is singular and achronological. The classic singularity theorem by Hawking and Penrose relies on chronology, and thus does not apply to the Kerr solution. An improvement of their theorem by Kriele partially removes the requirement of chronology. However, both of these singularity theorems fail to give any information on the type or location of the incomplete geodesics. Here, using recent results of Minguzzi, we prove a new singularity theorem, specifically designed to apply to black holes, which enables locating null incomplete geodesics within the black hole …
We investigate the influence of the quadrupole moment of a rotating source on the motion of a test particle in the strong field regime. For this purpose the Hartle-Thorne metric, that is an approximate solution of vacuum Einstein field equations that describes the exterior of any slowly rotating, stationary and axially symmetric body, is used. The metric is given with accuracy up to the second order terms in the body's angular momentum, and first order terms in its quadrupole moment. We give, with the same accuracy, analytic equations for equatorial circular geodesics in the Hartle-Thorne spac…
We describe a method to analyze causal geodesics in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes of Kerr-Schild form which, in particular, allows for a detailed study of the geodesics in the vicinity of the central singularity by means of a regularization procedure based on a generalization of the McGehee regularization for the motion of Newtonian point particles moving in a power-law potential. The McGehee regularization was used by Belbruno and Pretorius to perform a dynamical system regularization of the central singularity of the motion of massless test particles in the Schwarzschild spacet…
It has been claimed that the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi-de Sitter solution always admits future-pointing radial time-like geodesics emerging from the shell-focussing singularity, regardless of the nature of the (regular) initial data. This is despite the fact that some data rule out the emergence of future pointing radial null geodesics. We correct this claim and show that in general in spherical symmetry, the absence of radial null geodesics emerging from a central singularity is sufficient to prove that the singularity is censored.
Singularity theorems of general relativity utilize the notion of causal geodesic incompleteness as a criterion of the presence of a spacetime singularity. The incompleteness of a causal curve implies the end and/or beginning of the existence of a particle, which is an event. In the commonly accepted approach, singularities are not incorporated into spacetime. Thus spacetime turns out to be event-incomplete. With creation from nothing, singularities are sources of lawlessness. A straightforward way around those conceptual problems consists in including metric singularities in spacetime and then…
It was recently shown that the metric functions which describe a spherically symmetric space-time with vanishing radial pressure can be explicitly integrated. We investigate the nakedness and curvature strength of the shell-focusing singularity in that space-time. If the singularity is naked, the relation between the circumferential radius and the Misner-Sharp mass is given by $R\approx 2y_{0} m^β$ with $ 1/3<β\le 1$ along the first radial null geodesic from the singularity. The $β$ is closely related to the curvature strength of the naked singularity. For example, for the outgoing or ingoing …
A sufficient condition for an orthogonally transitive G2 cylindrical spacetime to be singularity-free is shown. The condition is general enough to comprise all known geodesically complete perfect fluid cosmologies.
The abstract boundary construction of Scott and Szekeres is a general and flexible way to define singularities in General Relativity. The abstract boundary construction also proves of great utility when applied to questions about more general boundary features of space-time. Within this construction an essential singularity is a non-regular boundary point which is accessible by a curve of interest (e.g. a geodesic) within finite (affine) parameter distance and is not removable. Ashley and Scott proved the first theorem linking abstract boundary essential singularities with the notion of causal…
We investigate the formation of a locally naked singularity in the collapse of radiation shells in an expanding Vaidya-deSitter background. This is achieved by considering the behaviour of non-spacelike and radial geodesics originating at the singularity. A specific condition is determined for the existence of radially outgoing, null geodesics originating at the singularity which, when this condition is satisfied, becomes locally naked. This condition turns out to be the same as that in the collapse of radiation shells in an asymptotically flat background. Therefore, we have, at least for the …
