The visibility of the shell-focusing singularity in Szekeres space-time - which represents quasi-spherical dust collapse - has been studied on numerous occasions in the context of the cosmic censorship conjecture. The various results derived have assumed that there exist radial null geodesics in the space-time. We show that such geodesics do not exist in general, and so previous results on the visibility of the singularity are not generally valid. More precisely, we show that the existence of a radial geodesic in Szekeres space-time implies that the space-time is axially symmetric, with the geodesic along the polar direction (i.e. along the axis of symmetry). If there is a second non-parallel radial geodesic, then the space-time is spherically symmetric, and so is a Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) space-time. For the case of the polar geodesic in an axially symmetric Szekeres space-time, we give conditions on the free functions (i.e. initial data) of the space-time which lead to visibility of the singularity along this direction. Likewise, we give a sufficient condition for censorship of the singularity. We point out the complications involved in addressing the question of visibility of the singularity both for non-radial null geodesics in the axially symmetric case and in the general (non-axially symmetric) case, and suggest a possible approach.
We investigate the occurrence of shell crossing singularities in quasi-spherical Szekeres dust models with or without a cosmological constant. We study the conditions for shell crossing singularity both from physical and geometrical point of view and they are in agreement.
In this paper we study the quasi-spherical gravitational collapse of (n+2) dimensional Szekeres space-time. The nature of the central shell focusing singularity so formed is analyzed by studying both the radial null and time-like geodesic originated from it. We follow the approach of Barve et al to analyze the null geodesic and find naked singularity in different situations.
We study the quantization of a scalar field on a classical background given by the Szekeres Class of solutions, which represent the collision of two gravitational plane waves with constant polarization. These solutions consist of two approaching gravitational plane waves moving in a flat background and an interaction region which always contains a curvature singularity. Following a suitable approximate procedure, introduced in a previous paper, we propose a way to compute the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor throughout the causal past region of the collision center in the q…
We analyze here the issue of local versus the global visibility of a singularity that forms in gravitational collapse of a dust cloud, which has important implications for the weak and strong versions of the cosmic censorship hypothesis. We find conditions as to when a singularity will be only locally naked, rather than being globally visible, thus preseving the weak censorship hypothesis. The conditions for formation of a black hole or naked singularity in the Szekeres quasi-spherical collapse models are worked out. The causal behaviour of the singularity curve is studied by examining the out…
The generalized Szekeres family of solution for quasi-spherical space-time of higher dimensions are obtained in the scalar tensor theory of gravitation. Brans-Dicke field equations expressed in Dicke's revised units are exhaustively solved for all the subfamilies of the said family. A particular group of solutions may also be interpreted as due to the presence of the so-called C-field of Hoyle and Narlikar and for a chosen sign of the coupling parameter. The models show either expansion from a big bang type of singularity or a collapse with the turning point at a lower bound. There is one part…
The generic null geodesic of the Schwarzschild--Kruskal--Szekeres geometry has a natural complexification, an elliptic curve with a cusp at the singularity. To realize that complexification as a Riemann surface without a cusp, and also to ensure conservation of energy at the singularity, requires a branched cover of the space-time over the singularity, with the geodesic being doubled as well to obtain a genus two hyperelliptic curve with an extra involution. Furthermore, the resulting space-time obtained from this branch cover has a Hamiltonian that is null geodesically complete. The full comp…
The abstract boundary construction of Scott and Szekeres is a general and flexible way to define singularities in General Relativity. The abstract boundary construction also proves of great utility when applied to questions about more general boundary features of space-time. Within this construction an essential singularity is a non-regular boundary point which is accessible by a curve of interest (e.g. a geodesic) within finite (affine) parameter distance and is not removable. Ashley and Scott proved the first theorem linking abstract boundary essential singularities with the notion of causal…
The global visibility of a singularity as an end state of the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric pressureless cloud is investigated. We show the existence of a non-zero measured set of parameters: the total mass and the initial mean density of the collapsing cloud, giving rise to a physically strong globally visible singularity as the end state for a fixed velocity function. The existence of such a set indicates that such singularity is stable under small perturbation in the initial data causing its existence. This is true for marginally as well as non-marginally bound cases. Th…
What happens to a massive star at the end of its life cycle is one of the most important and intriguing questions in theoretical physics. An unhindered gravitational collapse of such a sufficiently massive star can give rise to a spacetime singularity. This thesis discusses the phenomenon of such unhindered gravitational collapse and the causal structure of the singularity thus formed.
We study the gravitational collapse in ($n+2$)-D quasi-spherical Szekeres space-time (which possess no killing vectors) with dust as the matter distribution. Instead of choosing the radial coordinate `$r$' as the initial value for the scale factor $R$, we consider a power function of $r$ as the initial scale for the radius $R$. We examine the influence of initial data on the formation of singularity in gravitational collapse.
In this work the junction conditions between the exterior Reissner-Nordstrom-Vaidya space-time with the interior quasi-spherical Szekeres space-time have been studied for analyzing gravitational collapse in the presence of a magneto-hydrodynamic fluid undergoing dissipation in the form of heat flow. We have discussed about the apparent horizon and have evaluated the time difference between the formation of apparent horizon and central singularity.
We investigate exact solution in higher dimensional Husain model for a null fluid source with pressure $p$ and density $ρ$ are related by the following relations (i) $p=kρ$, (ii) $p=kρ-\frac{B(v)}{ρ^α}$ (variable modified Chaplygin) and (iii) $p=kρ^α$ (polytropic). We have studied the nature of singularity in gravitational collapse for the above equations of state and also for different choices of the of the parameters $k$ and $B$ namely, (i) $k=0$, $B=$ constant (generalized Chaplygin), (ii) $B=$ constant (modified Chaplygin). It is found that the nature of singularity is independent of these…
We study the occurrence and nature of naked singularities for a dust model with non-zero cosmological constant in ($n+2$)-dimensional Szekeres space-times (which possess no Killing vectors) for $n\geq 2$. We find that central shell-focusing singularities may be locally naked in higher dimensions but depend sensitively on the choice of initial data. In fact, the nature of the initial density determines the possibility of naked singularity in space-times with more than five dimensions. The results are similar to the collapse in spherically symmetric Tolman-Bondi-Lema\^ıtre space-times.
We present the geodesical completion of the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions which covers the entire space in (u,v) Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates, including the spacetime behind the black and white hole singularities. The gravitational constant switches sign abruptly at the singularity, thus we interpret the other side of the singularity as a region of antigravity. The presence of such sign flips is a prediction of local (Weyl) scale invariant geodesically complete spacetimes which improve classical general relativity and string theory. We compute the geodesics for our new black hole…
The evolution of inhomogeneous space-times composed of uncharged fermions is studied for Szekeres metrics which have no Killing vectors, in general. Using the Einstein-Cartan theory to include the effects of (intrinsic) matter spin in General Relativity, the dynamics of a perfect fluid with non-null spin degrees of freedom is considered. It is shown that, if the matter is composed by effective dust and certain constraints on the initial data are verified, a singularity will not form. Various special cases are discussed, such as Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi and Bianchi I space-times, where the results…
We construct a class of spherically symmetric collapse models in which a naked singularity may develop as the end state of collapse. The matter distribution considered has negative radial and tangential pressures, but the weak energy condition is obeyed throughout. The singularity forms at the center of the collapsing cloud and continues to be visible for a finite time. The duration of visibility depends on the nature of energy distribution. Hence the causal structure of the resulting singularity depends on the nature of the mass function chosen for the cloud. We present a general model in whi…
We study the curvature strength and visibility of the central singularity arising in Tolman-Bondi-de Sitter collapse. We find that the singularity is visible and Tipler strong along an infinite number of timelike geodesics, independently of the initial data, and thus stable against perturbations of the latter.
We consider a static, axially symmetric, and asymptotically flat exact solution of the Einstein vacuum equations, known as the gamma metric. This is characterized by two constant parameters $m$ and $γ$. We find that the total energy associated with this metric is $m γ$. Considering the total energy to be positive, we investigate the nature of a curvature singularity $r=2m$ ($r$ is the radial coordinate) in this metric. For $γ< 1$, this singularity is globally visible along $θ= 0$ as well as $θ= π/2$. However, for $γ> 1$, this singularity is though globally naked along $θ=π/2$, it is not visibl…
We derive some more results on the nature of the singularities arising in the collapse of inhomogeneous dust spheres. (i) It is shown that there are future-pointing radial and non-radial time-like geodesics emerging from the singularity if and only if there are future-pointing radial null geodesics emerging from the singularity. (ii) Limits of various space-time invariants and other useful quantities (relating to Thorne's point-cigar-barrel-pancake classification and to isotropy/entropy measures) are studied in the approach to the singularity. (iii) The topology of the singularity is studied f…
My research work can be classified into two parts namely, (i) Cosmological phenomena with varying speed of light and (ii) Gravitational collapse and black holes. We have investigated several cosmological phenomena when velocity of light varies with time. We have considered the variation of light as power-law in time and have studied the Brans-Dicke cosmology, Quintessence problem and others. We have also examined whether some cosmological problems can be solved using it for anisotropic space-time model. In brane scenario we have studied some cosmological implications namely, the Cosmic No-Hair…
We construct spacetimes which provide spherical and nonspherical models of black hole formation in the flat Friedmann--Lemaitre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) universe with the Lemaitre--Tolman--Bondi solution and the Szekeres quasispherical solution, respectively. These dust solutions may contain both shell-crossing and shell-focusing naked singularities. These singularities can be physically regarded as the breakdown of dust description, where strong pressure gradient force plays a role. We adopt the simultaneous big bang condition to extract a growing mode of adiabatic perturbation in the flat F…
We reconsider space-time singularities in classical Einsteinian general relativity: with the help of several new co-ordinate systems we show that the Schwarzschild solution can be extended beyond the curvature singularity at r=0. The extension appears as an infinite covering of standard Kruskal space-time. While the two-dimensional reduction of this infinite sequence of Kruskal-Szekeres domains obtained by suppressing the angular degrees of freedom is still a topological manifold - albeit one for which the metric structure is singular on one-dimensional submanifolds - we obtain for the full fo…
We analyze spherical dust collapse with non-vanishing radial pressure, $Π$, and vanishing tangential stresses. Considering a barotropic equation of state, $Π=γρ$, we obtain an analytical solution in closed form---which is exact for $γ=-1,0$, and approximate otherwise---near the center of symmetry (where the curvature singularity forms). We study the formation, visibility, and curvature strength of singularities in the resulting spacetime. We find that visible, Tipler strong singularities can develop from generic initial data. Radial pressure alters the spectrum of possible endstates for collap…
We analyse the effective potential of the scalar wave equation near generic space-time singularities of power-law type (Szekeres-Iyer metrics) and show that the effective potential exhibits a universal and scale invariant leading x^{-2} inverse square behaviour in the ``tortoise coordinate'' x provided that the metrics satisfy the strict Dominant Energy Condition (DEC). This result parallels that obtained in hep-th/0403252 for probes consisting of families of massless particles (null geodesic deviation, a.k.a. the Penrose Limit). The detailed properties of the scalar wave operator depend sensi…

For any asymptotically flat spacetime with a suitable causal structure obeying (a weak form of) Penrose's cosmic censorship conjecture and satisfying conditions guaranteeing focusing of complete null geodesics, we prove that active topological censorship holds. We do not assume global hyperbolicity, and therefore make no use of Cauchy surfaces and their topology. Instead, we replace this with two underlying assumptions concerning the causal structure: that no compact set can signal to arbitrarily small neighbourhoods of spatial infinity (``$i^0$-avoidance''), and that no future incomplete null…
We study the gravitational collapse of a homogeneous scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity, in the presence of a particular type of dynamical deformation between the canonical momenta of the scale factor and of the scalar field. In the absence of such a deformation, a class of solutions can be found in the literature [R. Goswami and P. S. Joshi, arXiv:gr-qc/0410144], %\cite{JG04}, whereby a curvature singularity occurs at the collapse end state, which can be either hidden behind a horizon or be visible to external observers. However, when the phase-space is deformed, as implemented herein…
A spherical dust cloud which is initially at rest and which has a monotonously decaying density profile collapses and forms a shell-focussing singularity. Provided the density profile is not too flat, meaning that its second radial derivative is negative at the center, this singularity is visible to local, and sometimes even to global observers. According to the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, such naked singularities should be unstable under generic, nonspherical perturbations of the initial data or when more realistic matter models are considered. In an attempt to gain some understandin…
In a recent paper, Mallett found a solution of the Einstein equations in which closed timelike curves (CTC's) are present in the empty space outside an infinitely long cylinder of light moving in circular paths around an axis. Here we show that, for physically realistic energy densities, the CTC's occur at distances from the axis greater than the radius of the visible universe by an immense factor. We then show that Mallett's solution has a curvature singularity on the axis, even in the case where the intensity of the light vanishes. Thus it is not the solution one would get by starting with M…
In General Relativity a space-time $M$ is regarded singular if there is an obstacle that prevents an incomplete curve in $M$ to be continued. Usually, such a space-time is completed to form $\bar{M} = M \cup \partial M$ where $\partial M$ is a singular boundary of $M$. The standard geometric tools on $M$ do not allow "to cross the boundary". However, the so-called Synthetic Differential Geometry (SDG), a categorical version of standard differential geometry based on intuitionistic logic, has at its disposal tools permitting doing so. Owing to the existence of infinitesimals one is able to pene…
