Several graph properties are characterized as the class of graphs that admit an orientation avoiding finitely many oriented structures. For instance, if $F_k$ is the set of homomorphic images of the directed path on $k+1$ vertices, then a graph is $k$-colourable if and only if it admits an orientation with no induced oriented graph in $F_k$. There is a fundamental question underlying this kind of characterizations: given a graph property, $\mathcal{P}$, is there a finite set of oriented graphs, $F$, such that a graph belongs to $\mathcal{P}$ if and only if it admits an orientation with no induced oriented graph in $F$? We address this question by exhibiting necessary conditions upon certain graph classes to admit such a characterization. Consequently, we exhibit an uncountable family of hereditary classes, for which no such finite set exists. In particular, the class of graphs with no holes of prime length belongs to this family.
In this paper, we use the theory of Riordan matrices to introduce the notion of an oriented Riordan graph. The oriented Riordan graphs are a far-reaching generalization of the well known and well studied Toeplitz oriented graphs and tournament. The main focus in this paper is the study of structural properties of the oriented Riordan graphs which includes a fundamental decomposition theorem and fractal property. Finally, we introduce the generalization of the oriented Riordan graph who is called a $p$-Riordan graph.
An oriented graph $G^σ$ is a digraph without loops and multiple arcs, where $G$ is called the underlying graph of $G^σ$. Let $S(G^σ)$ denote the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$. The rank of the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$ is called the {\it skew-rank} of $G^σ$, denoted by $sr(G^σ)$. The skew-adjacency matrix of an oriented graph is skew symmetric and the skew-rank is even. In this paper we consider the skew-rank of simple oriented graphs. Firstly we give some preliminary results about the skew-rank. Secondly we characterize the oriented graphs with skew-rank 2 and characterize the oriented g…
In this paper, we extend the concept of kings and serfs in tournaments to that of weak kings and weak serfs in oriented graphs. We obtain various results on the existence of weak kings(weak serfs) in oriented graphs, and show the existence of n-oriented graphs containing exactly k weak kings(weak serfs). Also, we give the existence of n-oriented graphs containing exactly k weak kings and exactly s weak serfs such that b weak kings from k are also weak serfs.
Given a graph $G$, let $G^σ$ be an oriented graph of $G$ with the orientation $σ$ and skew-adjacency matrix $S(G^σ)$. The skew energy of the oriented graph $G^σ$, denoted by $\mathcal{E}_S(G^σ)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all the eigenvalues of $S(G^σ)$. In this paper, we study the skew energy of random oriented graphs and formulate an exact estimate of the skew energy for almost all oriented graphs by generalizing Wigner's semicircle law. Moreover, we consider the skew energy of random regular oriented graphs $G_{n,d}^σ$, and get an exact estimate of the skew energy for …
In this paper, we extend the ideas of graph pebbling to oriented graphs and find a classification for all graphs with fully traversable pebbling assignments that are isomorphic to their assignment graph. We then give some cases in which a graph with a non-fully traversable pebbling assignment is isomorphic to its assignment graph.
An oriented circulant graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integers. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence of perfect state transfer ($\PST$ for short) and multiple state transfer ($\MST$ for short) on integral oriented circulant graphs. Specifically, a characterization of $\PST$ (or $\MST$) on integral oriented circulant graphs is provided. As an application, we also obtain a closed-form expression for the number of integral oriented circulant graphs with fixed order having $\PST$ (or $\MST$).
Let $G$ be a simple undirected graph, and $G^σ$ be an oriented graph of $G$ with the orientation $σ$ and skew-adjacency matrix $S(G^σ)$. The skew energy of the oriented graph $G^σ$, denoted by $\mathcal{E}_S(G^σ)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all the eigenvalues of $S(G^σ)$. In this paper, we characterize the underlying graphs of all 4-regular oriented graphs with optimum skew energy and give orientations of these underlying graphs such that the skew energy of the resultant oriented graphs indeed attain optimum. It should be pointed out that there are infinitely many 4-regu…
Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture asserts that every oriented graph has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. Combs are the graphs having no induced $C_4$, $\overline{C_4}$, $C_5$, chair or $\overline{chair}$. We characterize combs using dependency digraphs. We characterize the graphs having no induced $C_4$, $\overline{C_4}$, chair or $\overline{chair}$ using dependency digraphs. Then we prove that every oriented graph missing a comb satisfies this conjecture. We then deduce that every oriented comb and every oriented threshold graph …
The dichromatic number of a directed graph is at most 2, if we can 2-color the vertices such that each monochromatic part is acyclic. An oriented graph arises from a graph by orienting its edges in one of the two possible directions. We study oriented graphs, which have dichromatic number more than 2. Such a graph $D$ is $3$-dicritical if the removal of any arc of $D$ reduces the dichromatic number to 2. We construct infinitely many $3$-dicritical oriented graphs. Neumann-Lara found the four $7$-vertex $3$-dichromatic tournaments. We determine the $8$-vertex $3$-dichromatic tournaments, which …
A graph $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding if $G$ can be embedded into a $k$-page book. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding is the book thickness of $G$, denoted $bt(G)$. Most of the work on this subject has been done for unoriented graphs and oriented acyclic graphs (no directed cycles). In this work we discuss oriented graphs $\overrightarrow{D}$ containing directed cycles by using oriented book embeddings and oriented book thickness, $obt(\overrightarrow{D})$. To characterize $\overrightarrow{D}$ such that $obt(\overrightarrow{D}) = k$, we define the class $\mathcal{M…
Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture (SNC) asserts that every oriented graph has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph containing no induced $C_4$, $\overline{C_4}$, $S_3$, chair and $\overline{chair}$, then every oriented graph missing $G$ satisfies this conjecture. As a consequence, we deduce that the conjecture holds for every oriented graph missing a threshold graph, a generalized comb or a star.
We present an algorithm which takes a graph as input and decides in cubic time if the graph is the cocircuit graph of a uniform oriented matroid. In the affirmative case the algorithm returns the set of signed cocircuits of the oriented matroid. This improves an algorithm proposed by Babson, Finschi and Fukuda. Moreover we strengthen a result of Montellano-Ballesteros and Strausz about crabbed connectivity of cocircuit graphs of uniform oriented matroids.
Threshold graphs are a prevalent and widely studied class of simple graphs. They have several equivalent definitions which makes them a go-to class for finding examples and counter examples when testing and learning. This versatility has led to many results about threshold graphs and similar structures. We look to generalize this class of graphs to oriented graphs (directed simple graphs.) We give generalizations to four of the most versatile definitions and show their equivalence in the oriented case. We finish with a proof enumerating the number of these oriented threshold graphs which relat…
We extend a result of Griggs and Yeh about the maximum possible value of the L(2,1)-labeling number of a graph in terms of its maximum degree to oriented graphs. We consider the problem both in the usual definition of the oriented L(2,1)-labeling number and in some variants we introduce.
Let $\G$ be an oriented graph of order $n$ and $\a_1,\a_2,..., \a_n$ denote all the eigenvalues of the skew-adjacency matrix of $\G.$ The skew energy $\displaystyle{\cal E}_s(\G)= \sum_{i=1}^{n} |\a_i|.$ In this paper, the oriented unicyclic graphs with minimal and maximal skew energy are determined.
If ${\cal F}$ is a set of subgraphs $F$ of a finite graph $E$ we define a graph-counting polynomial $$ p_{\cal F}(z)=\sum_{F\in{\cal F}}z^{|F|} $$ In the present note we consider oriented graphs and discuss some cases where ${\cal F}$ consists of unbranched subgraphs $E$. We find several situations where something can be said about the location of the zeros of $p_{\cal F}$.
In this work, we establish an analogue result of the Erdös-Stone theorem of weighted digraphs using Regularity Lemma of digraphs. We give a stability result of oriented graphs and digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle and show that almost all oriented graphs and almost all digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle are almost bipartite respectively.
We conjecture that every oriented graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ^+ (G) , δ^- (G) \geq 5n/12$ contains the square of a Hamilton cycle. We also give a conjectural bound on the minimum semidegree which ensures a perfect packing of transitive triangles in an oriented graph. A link between Ramsey numbers and perfect packings of transitive tournaments is also considered.
We show that every sufficiently large oriented graph with minimum in- and outdegree at least (3n-4)/8 contains a Hamilton cycle. This is best possible and solves a problem of Thomassen from 1979.
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. We define the adjacency, incidence and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph and study each of them. We extend several matrix results known for graphs and signed graphs to oriented hypergraphs. New matrix results that are not direct generalizations are also presented. Finally, we study a new family of matrices that contains walk information.
Let $S(G^σ)$ be the skew-adjacency matrix of an oriented graph $G^σ$. The skew energy of $G^σ$ is defined as the sum of all singular values of its skew-adjacency matrix $S(G^σ)$. In this paper, we first deduce an integral formula for the skew energy of an oriented graph. Then we determine all oriented graphs with minimal skew energy among all connected oriented graphs on $n$ vertices with $m \ (n\le m < 2(n-2))$ arcs, which is an analogy to the conjecture for the energy of undirected graphs proposed by Caporossi {\it et al.} [G. Caporossi, D. Cvetkovi$\acute{c}$, I. Gutman, P. Hansen, Variable…
We define two coproducts for cycle-free oriented graphs, thus building up two commutative con- nected graded Hopf algebras, such that one is a comodule-coalgebra on the other, thus generalizing the result obtained previously for Hopf algebras of rooted trees.
We use a randomised embedding method to prove that for all α>0 any sufficiently large oriented graph G with minimum in-degree and out-degree δ^+(G),δ^-(G)\geq (3/8+α)|G| contains every possible orientation of a Hamilton cycle. This confirms a conjecture of Häggkvist and Thomason.
An oriented 3-graph consists of a family of triples (3-sets), each of which is given one of its two possible cyclic orientations. A cycle in an oriented 3-graph is a positive sum of some of the triples that gives weight zero to each 2-set. Our aim in this paper is to consider the following question: how large can the girth of an oriented 3-graph (on $n$ vertices) be? We show that there exist oriented 3-graphs whose shortest cycle has length $\frac{n^2}{2}(1+o(1))$: this is asymptotically best possible. We also show that there exist 3-tournaments whose shortest cycle has length $\frac{n^2}{3}(1…
Let $S(G^σ)$ be the skew-adjacency matrix of the oriented graph $G^σ$, which is obtained from a simple undirected graph $G$ by assigning an orientation $σ$ to each of its edges. The skew energy of an oriented graph $G^σ$ is defined as the sum of absolute values of all eigenvalues of $S(G^σ)$. For any positive integer $d$ with $3\leq d\leq n-3$, we determine the graph with minimal skew energy among all oriented bicyclic graphs that contain no vertex disjoint odd cycle of lengths $s$ and $l$ with $s+l\equiv 2(mod 4)$ on $n$ vertices with a given diameter $d$.
For a given hypergraph, an orientation can be assigned to the vertex-edge incidences. This orientation is used to define the adjacency and Laplacian matrices. In addition to studying these matrices, several related structures are investigated including the incidence dual, the intersection graph (line graph), and the 2-section. A connection is then made between oriented hypergraphs and balanced incomplete block designs.
A theory of orientation on gain graphs (voltage graphs) is developed to generalize the notion of orientation on graphs and signed graphs. Using this orientation scheme, the line graph of a gain graph is studied. For a particular family of gain graphs with complex units, matrix properties are established. As with graphs and signed graphs, there is a relationship between the incidence matrix of a complex unit gain graph and the adjacency matrix of the line graph.
Each of several possible definitions of local injectivity for a homomorphism of an oriented graph $G$ to an oriented graph $H$ leads to an injective oriented colouring problem. For each case in which such a problem is solvable in polynomial time, we identify a set $\mathcal{F}$ of oriented graphs such that an oriented graph $G$ has an injective oriented colouring with the given number of colours if and only if there is no $F \in \mathcal{F}$ for which there is a locally-injective homomorphism of $F$ to $G$.
The orientation completion problem for a class of oriented graphs asks whether a given partially oriented graph can be completed to an oriented graph in the class by orienting the unoriented edges of the partially oriented graph. Orientation completion problems have been studied recently for several classes of oriented graphs, yielding both polynomial time solutions as well as NP-completeness results. Local tournaments are a well-structured class of oriented graphs that generalize tournaments and their underlying graphs are intimately related to proper circular-arc graphs. According to Skrien,…

We present statistics on the decompositions (with respect to a distinguished symmetric 2t-cycle) of vertices of the hypercube graph, whose negative parts are covered by two subsets of the ground set {1,...,t} of the corresponding oriented matroid.
Let $\vec{T}_k$ be the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. We show that every oriented graph on $n=4m$ vertices with minimum total degree $(11/12+o(1))n$ can be partitioned into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_4$'s, and this bound is asymptotically tight. We also improve the best known bound on the minimum total degree for partitioning oriented graphs into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_k$'s.
We show that a number of conditions on oriented graphs, all of which are satisfied with high probability by randomly oriented graphs, are equivalent. These equivalences are similar to those given by Chung, Graham and Wilson in the case of unoriented graphs, and by Chung and Graham in the case of tournaments. Indeed, our main theorem extends to the case of a general underlying graph G the main result of Chung and Graham which corresponds to the case that G is complete. One interesting aspect of these results is that exactly two of the four orientations of a four-cycle can be used for a quasi-ra…
Motivated by his work on the classification of countable homogeneous oriented graphs, Cherlin asked about the typical structure of oriented graphs (i) without a transitive triangle, or (ii) without an oriented triangle. We give an answer to these questions (which is not quite the predicted one). Our approach is based on the recent `hypergraph containers' method, developed independently by Saxton and Thomason as well as by Balogh, Morris and Samotij. Moreover, our results generalise to forbidden transitive tournaments and forbidden oriented cycles of any order, and also apply to digraphs. Along…
Oriented matroids (often called order types) are combinatorial structures that generalize point configurations, vector configurations, hyperplane arrangements, polyhedra, linear programs, and directed graphs. Oriented matroids have played a key role in combinatorics, computational geometry, and optimization. This paper surveys prior work and presents an update on the search for bounds on the diameter of the cocircuit graph of an oriented matroid. We review the diameter problem and show the diameter bounds of general oriented matroids reduce to those of uniform oriented matroids. We give the la…
Let $G$ be a simple undirected graph and $G^σ$ be the corresponding oriented graph of $G$ with the orientation $σ$. The skew energy of $G^σ$, denoted by $\varepsilon_s(G^σ)$, is defined as the sum of the singular values of the skew adjacency matrix $S(G^σ)$. In 2010, Adiga et al. certified that $\varepsilon_s(G^σ) \leq n\sqrtΔ$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$ of order $n$. In this paper, we determine all connected 5-regular oriented graphs of order $n$ with maximum skew-energy.
We consider the problem of determining the inducibility (maximum possible asymptotic density of induced copies) of oriented graphs on four vertices. We provide exact values for more than half of the graphs, and very close lower and upper bounds for all the remaining ones. It occurs that, for some graphs, the structure of extremal constructions maximizing density of its induced copies is very sophisticated and complex.
This article studies the \emph{$k$-forcing number} for oriented graphs, generalizing both the \emph{zero forcing number} for directed graphs and the $k$-forcing number for simple graphs. In particular, given a simple graph $G$, we introduce the maximum (minimum) oriented $k$-forcing number, denoted $\MOF_k(G)$ ($\mof_k(G)$), which is the largest (smallest) $k$-forcing number among all possible orientations of $G$. These new ideas are compared to known graph invariants and it is shown that, among other things, $\mof(G)$ equals the path covering number of $G$ while $\MOF_k(G)$ is greater than or…
We show that for each α>0 every sufficiently large oriented graph G with δ^+(G),δ^-(G)\ge 3|G|/8+ α|G| contains a Hamilton cycle. This gives an approximate solution to a problem of Thomassen. In fact, we prove the stronger result that G is still Hamiltonian if δ(G)+δ^+(G)+δ^-(G)\geq 3|G|/2 + α|G|. Up to the term α|G| this confirms a conjecture of Häggkvist. We also prove an Ore-type theorem for oriented graphs.
The notion of a $\mathcal C$-ultrahomogeneous graph, due to Isaksen et al., is adapted for digraphs, and subsequently a strongly connected $\vec{C}_4$-ultrahomogeneous oriented graph on 168 vertices and 126 pairwise arc-disjoint 4-cycles is presented, with regular indegree and outdegree 3 and no circuits of lengths 2 and 3, by altering a definition of the Coxeter graph via pencils of ordered lines of the Fano plane in which pencils are replaced by ordered pencils.
The set A of distinct scores of the vertices of an oriented bipartite graph D(U, V) is called its score set. We consider the following question: given a finite, nonempty set A of positive integers, is there an oriented bipartite graph D(U, V) such that score set of D(U, V) is A? We conjecture that there is an affirmative answer, and verify this conjecture when $\mid A\mid $ = 1, 2, 3, or when A is a geometric or arithmetic progression.
We present statistics on the decompositions (with respect to a distinguished symmetric 2t-cycle) of vertices of the hypercube graph, whose negative parts are regarded as disjoint unions of two subsets of the ground set {1,...,t} of the corresponding oriented matroid.
Let $G^σ$ be an oriented graph and $S(G^σ)$ be its skew-adjacency matrix, where $G$ is called the underlying graph of $G^σ$. The skew-rank of $G^σ$, denoted by $sr(G^σ)$, is the rank of $S(G^σ)$. Denote by $d(G)=|E(G)|-|V(G)|+θ(G)$ the dimension of cycle spaces of $G$, where $|E(G)|$, $|V(G)|$ and $θ(G)$ are the edge number, vertex number and the number of connected components of $G$, respectively. Recently, Wong, Ma and Tian [European J. Combin. 54 (2016) 76--86] proved that $sr(G^σ)\leq r(G)+2d(G)$ for an oriented graph $G^σ$, where $r(G)$ is the rank of the adjacency matrix of $G$, and char…
In 1880, P. G. Tait showed that the four colour theorem is equivalent to the assertion that every 3-regular planar graph without cut-edges is 3-edge-colourable, and in 1891, J. Petersen proved that every 3-regular graph with at most two cut-edges has a 1-factor. In this paper, we introduce the notion of collapsing all edges of a 1-factor of a 3-regular planar graph, thereby obtaining what we call a vertex-oriented 4-regular planar graph. We also introduce the notion of o-colouring a vertex-oriented 4-regular planar graph, and we prove that the four colour theorem is equivalent to the assertion…
It is an intriguing question to see what kind of information on the structure of an oriented graph $D$ one can obtain if $D$ does not contain a fixed oriented graph $H$ as a subgraph. The related question in the unoriented case has been an active area of research, and is relatively well-understood in the theory of quasi-random graphs and extremal combinatorics. In this paper, we consider the simplest cases of such a general question for oriented graphs, and provide some results on the global behavior of the orientation of $D$. For the case that $H$ is an oriented four-cycle we prove: in every …
The complete symmetric directed graph of order $v$, denoted $K_{v}^*$, is the directed graph on $v$ vertices that contains both arcs $(x,y)$ and $(y,x)$ for each pair of distinct vertices $x$ and $y$. For a given directed graph, $D$, the set of all $v$ for which $K_{v}^*$ admits a $D$-decomposition is called the spectrum of $D$. There are 10 non-isomorphic orientations of a $7$-cycle (heptagon). In this paper, we completely settled the spectrum problem for each of the oriented heptagons.
