The notion of a $\mathcal C$-ultrahomogeneous graph, due to Isaksen et al., is adapted for digraphs, and subsequently a strongly connected $\vec{C}_4$-ultrahomogeneous oriented graph on 168 vertices and 126 pairwise arc-disjoint 4-cycles is presented, with regular indegree and outdegree 3 and no circuits of lengths 2 and 3, by altering a definition of the Coxeter graph via pencils of ordered lines of the Fano plane in which pencils are replaced by ordered pencils.
It is shown that exactly 7 distance-transitive cubic graphs among the existing 12 possess a particular ultrahomogeneous property with respect to oriented cycles realizing the girth that allows the construction of a related Cayley digraph with similar ultrahomogeneous properties in which those oriented cycles appear minimally "pulled apart", or "separated" and whose description is truly beautiful and insightful. This work is proposed as the initiation of a study of similar ultrahomogeneous properties for distance-transitive graphs in general with the aim of generalizing to constructions of simi…
We show that the 56-vertex Klein cubic graph $\G'$ can be obtained from the 28-vertex Coxeter cubic graph $\G$ by 'zipping' adequately the squares of the 24 7-cycles of $\G$ endowed with an orientation obtained by considering $\G$ as a $\mathcal C$-ultrahomogeneous digraph, where $\mathcal C$ is the collection formed by both the oriented 7-cycles $\vec{C}_7$ and the 2-arcs $\vec{P}_3$ that tightly fasten those $\vec{C}_7$ in $\G$. In the process, it is seen that $\G'$ is a ${\mathcal C}'$-ultrahomogeneous (undirected) graph, where ${\mathcal C}'$ is the collection formed by both the 7-cycles $…
Like the Coxeter graph became reattached into the Klein graph in [2], the Levi graphs of the $9_3$ and $10_3$ self-dual configurations, known as the Pappus and Desargues ($k$-transitive) graphs $\mathcal P$ and $\mathcal D$ (where $k=3$), also admit reattachments of the distance-$(k-1)$ graphs of half of their oriented shortest cycles via orientation assignments on their common $(k-1)$-arcs, concurrent for ${\mathcal P}$ and opposite for $\mathcal D$, now into 2 disjoint copies of their corresponding Menger graphs. Here, $\mathcal P$ is the unique cubic distance-transitive (or CDT) graph with …
Let $\vec{T}_k$ be the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. We show that every oriented graph on $n=4m$ vertices with minimum total degree $(11/12+o(1))n$ can be partitioned into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_4$'s, and this bound is asymptotically tight. We also improve the best known bound on the minimum total degree for partitioning oriented graphs into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_k$'s.
We use Razborov's flag algebra method to show an asymptotic upper bound for the maximal induced density $i(\vec P_3)$ of the orgraph $\vec P_3$ in an arbitrary orgraph. A conjecture of Thomassé states that $i(\vec P_3)=2/5$. The hitherto best known upper bound $i(\vec P_3)\leq12/25$ was given by Bondy. We can show that $i(\vec P_3)\leq 0.4446$. Further, we consider such a maximal density for some other small orgraphs. With easy arguments one can see that $i(\vec C_3)=1/4$, $i(\vec K_2 \cup \vec E_1)=3/4$ and $2/21\leq i(\vec C_4)$. We show that $i(\vec C_4)\leq 0.1104$ and conjecture that the …
Given an acyclic oriented graph $\vec{H}$ and a graph $G$, we write $G \to \vec{H}$ if every orientation of $G$ has an oriented copy of $\vec{H}$. We define $\vec{R}(\vec{H})$ as the smallest number $n$ such that there exists a graph $G$ satisfying $G \to \vec{H}$. Denoting by $R(H)$ the classical Ramsey number of a graph $H$, we show that $\vec{R}(\vec{H}) \leq 2R(H)^{c \log^2 h}$ for every acyclic oriented graph $\vec{H}$ with $h$ vertices, where $H$ is its underlying undirected graph. We also study the threshold function for the event $\{G(n,p) \to \vec{H}\}$ in the binomial random graph $G…
We give a cohomological interpretation of the Heaviside filtration on the Varchenko--Gelfand ring of a pair $(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{K})$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a real hyperplane arrangement and $\mathcal{K}$ is a convex open subset of the ambient vector space. This builds on work of the first author, who studied the filtration from a purely algebraic perspective, as well as work of Moseley, who gave a cohomological interpretation in the special case where $\mathcal{K}$ is the ambient vector space. We also define the Gelfand--Rybnikov ring of a conditional oriented matroid, which simultaneously…
Oriented matroids (often called order types) are combinatorial structures that generalize point configurations, vector configurations, hyperplane arrangements, polyhedra, linear programs, and directed graphs. Oriented matroids have played a key role in combinatorics, computational geometry, and optimization. This paper surveys prior work and presents an update on the search for bounds on the diameter of the cocircuit graph of an oriented matroid. We review the diameter problem and show the diameter bounds of general oriented matroids reduce to those of uniform oriented matroids. We give the la…
If $G$ is a graph and $\vec H$ is an oriented graph, we write $G\to \vec H$ to say that every orientation of the edges of $G$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdigraph. We consider the case in which $G=G(n,p)$, the binomial random graph. We determine the threshold $p_{\vec H}=p_{\vec H}(n)$ for the property $G(n,p)\to \vec H$ for the cases in which $\vec H$ is an acyclic orientation of a complete graph or of a cycle.
Let $D$ be a strongly connected oriented graph with vertex-set $V$ and arc-set $A$. The distance from a vertex $u$ to another vertex $v$, $d(u,v)$ is the minimum length of oriented paths from $u$ to $v$. Suppose $B=\{b_1,b_2,b_3,...b_k\}$ is a nonempty ordered subset of $V$. The representation of a vertex $v$ with respect to $B$, $r(v|B)$, is defined as a vector $(d(v,b_1), d(v,b_2), ..., d(v,b_k))$. If any two distinct vertices $u,v$ satisfy $r(u|B)\neq r(v|B)$, then $B$ is said to be a resolving set of $D$. If the cardinality of $B$ is minimum then $B$ is said to be a basis of $D$ and the ca…
Sopena in his survey [E. Sopena, The oriented chromatic number of graphs: A short survey, preprint 2013] writes, without any proof, that an oriented cycle $\vec C$ can be colored with three colors if and only if $λ(\vec C)=0$, where $λ(\vec C)$ is the number of forward arcs minus the number of backward arcs in $\vec C$. This is not true. In this paper we show that $\vec C$ can be colored with three colors if and only if $λ(\vec C)=0(\bmod~3)$ or $\vec C$ does not contain three consecutive arcs going in the same direction.
The pioneering work of Jones and Kauffman unveiled a fruitful relationship between statistical mechanics and knot theory. Recently, Jones introduced two subgroups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$ of the Thompson groups $F$ and $T$, respectively, together with a procedure that associates an oriented link diagram to any element of these subgroups. Moreover, several specializations of some well-known polynomial link invariants can be seen as functions of positive type on the Thompson groups or the Jones-Thompson subgroups. One important example is provided by suitable evaluations of the Jones polynomial, …
In this paper, we give bounds on the dichromatic number $\vecχ(Σ)$ of a surface $Σ$, which is the maximum dichromatic number of an oriented graph embeddable on $Σ$. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of $\vecχ(Σ)$ by showing that there exist constants $a_1$ and $a_2$ such that, $a_1\frac{\sqrt{-c}}{\log(-c)} \leq \vecχ(Σ) \leq a_2 \frac{\sqrt{-c}}{\log(-c)} $ for every surface $Σ$ with Euler characteristic $c\leq -2$. We then give more explicit bounds for some surfaces with high Euler characteristic. In particular, we show that the dichromatic numbers of the projective plane $\mathbb{N}_1$,…
It is well known that the edge vector space of an oriented graph can be decomposed in terms of cycles and cocycles (alias cuts, or bonds), and that a basis for the cycle and the cocycle spaces can be generated by adding and removing edges to an arbitrarily chosen spanning tree. In this paper we show that the edge vector space can also be decomposed in terms of cycles and the generating edges of cocycles (called cochords), or of cocycles and the generating edges of cycles (called chords). From this observation follows a construction in terms of oblique complementary projection operators. We emp…
