This paper investigates the impact of high penetration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) on the distribution network in the presence of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Two models for EVs are presented and the voltage profile of buses is investigated considering both models and various penetration levels of EVs within the distribution network. The analysis is conducted by presenting an exact convex relaxed form of the full ACOPF problem of the distribution network with fixed power EVs and presenting the full ACOPF problem of the distribution network with fixed current EVs. The performance of each model is illustrated in the case studies leveraging the modified IEEE 33-bus system and considering time-of-use (TOU) pricing. Besides the sensitivity of voltage profile of buses in the distribution network on the time-of-use prices is investigated in the case studies.

Long, lightly loaded feeders serving residential loads may begin to experience voltage excursions as plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) penetration increases. Residential PEV charging tends to occur during peak-load hours on residential feeders, leading to increased peak loads and potential voltage excursions. To avoid voltage excursions, two PEV charging control strategies were investigated using the IEEE 34-bus feeder. The first strategy shifts PEV charging energy from peak hours to off-peak hours; the other strategy allows PEVs to provide reactive power support. Undervoltage excursions seen in …
The increasing market penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) may change the travel behavior of drivers and pose a significant electricity demand on the power system. Since the electricity demand depends on the travel behavior of EVs, which are inherently uncertain, the forecasting of daily charging demand (CD) will be a challenging task. In this paper, we use the recorded GPS data of EVs and conventional gasoline-powered vehicles from the same city to investigate the potential shift in the travel behavior of drivers from conventional vehicles to EVs and forecast the spatiotemporal patterns of …
This paper describes a method based on mixed-integer linear programming to cost-optimally locate and size chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) in distribution grids as a function of the driving demand. The problem accounts for the notion of single-port chargers (SPCs), where a charger can interface one EV maximum, and multi-port chargers (MPCs), where the same charger can interface multiple EVs. The advantage of MPCs is twofold. First, multiple ports allow arbitraging the charging among multiple vehicles without requiring the drivers to plug and unplug EVs. Second, the charger's power electron…

The fast switching capability and low loss of low-voltage field effect transistors (FET) allow …
This paper presents an investigation into load dynamics that potentially cause voltage instability or collapse in distribution networks. Through phasor-based, time domain simulations of a dynamic load (DL) model from the literature, we show that the load dynamics alone do not cause voltage instability or collapse. By comparing the DL model to a benchmark model, we identify an important limitation with the DL model. We characterise this limitation and recommend that future work use load models with physical state variables. By investigating when and how load dynamics cause voltage instability, …
This study proposes a real-time distributed energy resource (DER) coordination model that can exploit flexibility from the DERs to solve voltage and overloading issues using both active and reactive power. The model considers time-coupling devices including electric vehicles and heat pumps by deviating as little as possible from their original schedules while prioritizing DERs with the most urgent demand using dynamic cost terms. The model does not require a multi-period setting or a multi-period-ahead forecast, which enables the model to alleviate the computational difficulty and enhance its …

As a new type of microgrid structure, AC-DC hybrid microgrid can efficiently consume new energy distributed generator based on photovoltaics, which is very suitable for microgrid systems with electric vehicles as the main load. Unlike the AC microgrid, the DC bus of the AC-DC hybrid microgrid is a low-inertia system. How to improve the DC bus inertia of the AC-DC hybrid microgrid system and the stability of the DC bus voltage become particularly important. Based on this, this paper presents a method for flexible control strategy of microgrid bus voltage based on multi-node droop. By considerin…

Voltage unbalance in distribution networks (DN) is expected to grow with increasing penetration of single-phase distributed generation and single-phase loads such as electric vehicle chargers. Unbalance mitigation will be a significant concern as voltage unbalance leads to increased losses, reduced motor and inverter efficiency, and becomes a limiting factor for DN operation. The true definition of the unbalance metric needs phasor measurements of network voltage and current. However, such phasor measurements are generally not available in real life and as such approximate definitions are wide…
A charging system is required to convert ac electricity from the grid to dc electricity to charge an electric vehicle (EV) battery. According to the Society of Automatic Engineers (SAE) standard, EV chargers can be divided into three levels based on power rating: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. This paper investigates the circuit topologies and control principles of EV charging systems at each level. Three high-fidelity testbeds of EV charging systems for a 10 kWh battery are designed and implemented in real-time digital simulator RT-Lab. The testbeds include modeling details such as switching …

Accordingly, an optimal control problem (OCP) has been formulated in the form of a nonlinear program (NLP), aiming at minimising the total energy consumption of the battery. The main focus here is to develop a computationally efficient approach, mimi…
The increased penetration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the transportation sector has increased the requirement of Fast Charging Direct Current (FCDC) stations to meet customer's speedy charging requirements. However, both charging stations and EVs connection to the communication infrastructure as well as the power grid makes it vulnerable to cyber attacks. In this paper, the vulnerability of the EV charging process is initially studied. We then show how a botnet of compromised EVs and FCDC stations can be utilized to launch cyber attacks on the power grid resulting in an increase in the load …

The growing deployment of electric mobility calls for power system analyses to investigate to what extent the simultaneous charging of electric vehicles leads to degraded network operation and to validate the efficiency of countermeasures. To reduce complexity and CPU time, a common approach while performing these analyses consists in replacing electric vehicles and their charging stations with constant PQ loads. However, this approach is inaccurate, as the power absorbed by these elements actually depends not only on voltage but also on the state of charge, charging method, cathode chemistry …
The rapid escalation in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and their uncoordinated charging patterns pose several challenges in distribution system operation. While this compromises the consumer power quality, it also puts on extra stress on the local voltage control devices. These challenges demand for a well-coordinated and power network-aware charging approach for PEVs in a community. This paper formulates a real-time electric vehicle charging scheduling problem as an mixe…

However, these methods require high-cost telecommunication, measurement, and processing infrastructure and can only be implemented in smart grids. This article introduces a Semi-Smart Method (SSM) to charge EVs that does not require complex infrastructure. This method, using a simple and inexpensive local automation system, charges EVs during off-pea…
The decarbonization of for example the energy or heat sector leads to the transformation of distribution grids. The expansion of decentralized energy resources and the integration of new consumers due to sector coupling (e.g. heat pumps or electric vehicles) into low voltage grids increases the need for grid expansion and usage of flexibilities in the grid. A high observability of the current grid status is needed to perform these tasks efficiently and effectively. Therefore, there is a need to increase the observability of low voltage grids by installing measurement technologies (e.g. smart m…
