The generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes of a manifold bundle with fiber $M$ depend only on the underlying $τ_M$-fibration, meaning the family of vector bundles formed by the tangent bundles of the fibers. This motivates a closer study of the classifying space for $τ_M$-fibrations, $Baut(τ_M)$, and its cohomology ring, i.e., the ring of characteristic classes of $τ_M$-fibrations. For a bundle $ξ$ over a simply connected Poincaré duality space, we construct a relative Sullivan model for the universal orientable $ξ$-fibration together with explicit cocycle representatives for the characteristic classes of the canonical bundle over its total space. This yields tools for computing the rational cohomology ring of $Baut(ξ)$ as well as the subring generated by the generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes. To illustrate, we carry out sample computations for spheres and complex projective spaces. We discuss applications to tautological rings of simply connected manifolds and to the problem of deciding whether a given $τ_M$-fibration comes from a manifold bundle.
In this note we introduce a construction which assigns to an arbitrary manifold bundle its fiberwise orientation covering. This is used to show that the zeta classes of unoriented surface bundles are not divisible in the stable range.
In this paper we classify the homotopy classes of proper maps $E\rightarrow \mathbb R^k$, where $E$ is a vector bundle over a compact Hausdorff space. As a corollary we compute the homotopy classes of proper maps $\mathbb R^n\rightarrow \mathbb R^k$. We find a stability range of such maps. We conclude with some remarks on framed submanifolds of non-compact manifolds, the relationship with proper homotopy classes of maps and the Pontryagin-Thom construction.
Characteristic classes of oriented vector bundles can be identified with cohomology classes of the disjoint union of classifying spaces BSO_n of special orthogonal groups SO_n with n=0,1,... A characteristic class is stable if it extends to a cohomology class of a homotopy colimit BSO of classifying spaces BSO_n. Similarly, characteristic classes of smooth oriented manifold bundles with fibers given by oriented closed smooth manifolds of a fixed dimension d\ge 0 can be identified with cohomology classes of the disjoint union of classifying spaces BDiff M of orientation preserving diffeomorphis…
For a Lie group G and a smooth manifold W, we study the difference between smooth actions of G on W and bundles over the classifying space of G with fiber W and structure group Diff(W). In particular, we exhibit smooth manifold bundles over BSU(2) that are not induced by an action. The main tool for reaching this goal is a technical result that gives a constraint for the values of tautological classes pulled back to the cohomology of BSU(2) along a map induced by an action.
The most basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles are the generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, obtained by fibre integrating characteristic classes of the vertical tangent bundle. In this note we show that they may be defined for more general families of manifolds than smooth fibre bundles: smooth block bundles and topological fibre bundles.
Given a closed simply connected manifold $M$ of dimension $2n\ge6$, we compare the ring of characteristic classes of smooth oriented bundles with fibre $M$ to the analogous ring resulting from replacing $M$ by the connected sum $M\sharpΣ$ with an exotic sphere $Σ$. We show that, after inverting the order of $Σ$ in the group of homotopy spheres, the two rings in question are isomorphic in a range of degrees. Furthermore, we construct infinite families of examples witnessing that inverting the order of $Σ$ is necessary.
Using certain Thom spectra appearing in the study of cobordism categories, we show that the odd half of the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes on the mappping class group of a surface with negative Euler characteristic vanish in integral cohomology when restricted to the handlebody subgroup. This is a special case of a more general theorem valid in all dimensions: universal characteristic classes made from monomials in the Pontrjagin classes (and even powers of the Euler class) vanish when pulled back from BDiff(\partial W) to BDiff(W).
Tautological classes, or generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, are basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles, and have recently been used to describe the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of diffeomorphism groups for several types of manifolds. We show that rationally tautological classes depend only on the underlying topological block bundle, and use this to prove the vanishing of tautological classes for many bundles with fibre an aspherical manifold.
We introduce cannibalistic classes for string bundles with values in $TMF$ with level structures. This allows us to compute the Morava $E$-homology of any map from the bordism spectrum $MString$ to $TMF$ with level structures.
For any (n-1)-dimensional simplicial complex, we construct a particular n-dimensional complex vector bundle over the associated Davis-Januszkiewicz space whose Chern classes are given by the elementary symmetric polynomials in the generators of the Stanley Reisner algebra. We show that the isomorphism type of this complex vector bundle as well as of its realification are completely determined by its characteristic classes. This allows us to show that coloring properties of the simplicial complex are reflected by splitting properties of this bundle and vice versa. Similar question are also disc…
We apply our earlier work on the higher-dimensional analogue of the Mumford conjecture to two questions. Inspired by work of Ebert we prove non-triviality of certain characteristic classes of bundles of smooth closed manifolds. Inspired by work of Church-Farb-Thibault and Church-Crossley-Giansiracusa we investigate the dependence of characteristic classes of bundles on characteristic numbers of its fibre, total space and base space.
We compute the completed $TMF_0(3)$ cohomology of the 7-connective cover $BString$ of $BO$. We use cubical structures on line bundles over elliptic curves to construct an explicit class which together with the Pontryagin classes freely generates the cohomology ring.
Making use of the extended flux homomorphism on the group of symplectomorphisms of a closed oriented surface of genus at least 2, we introduce new characteristic classes of foliated surface bundles with symplectic, equivalently area-preserving, total holonomy. These characteristic classes are stable with respect to the genus and we show that they are highly non-trivial. We also prove that the second homology of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms equipped with the discrete topology is very large.
We prove vanishing results for the generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes of some smooth bundles whose fiber is a closed manifold that supports a nonpositively curved Riemannian metric. We also find, under some extra conditions, that the vertical tangent bundle is topologically rigid.
Let $K$ be the K3 manifold. In this note, we discuss two methods to prove that certain generalized Miller--Morita--Mumford classes for smooth bundles with fiber $K$ are non-zero. As a consequence, we fill a gap in a paper of the first author, and prove that the homomorphism $Diff(K)\to π_0 Diff(K)$ does not split. One of the two methods of proof uses a result of Franke on the stable cohomology of arithmetic groups that strengthens work of Borel, and may be of independent interest.
We study relations among characteristic classes of smooth manifold bundles with highly-connected fibers. For bundles with fiber the connected sum of $g$ copies of a product of spheres $S^d \times S^d$ and an odd $d$, we find numerous algebraic relations among the so-called "generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes". For all $g > 1$, we show that these infinitely many classes are algebraically generated by a finite subset. Our results contrast with the fact that there are no algebraic relations among these classes in a range of cohomological degrees that grows linearly with $g$, according to r…
We study geometric properties of characteristic classes of surfaces bundles. In particular, we show that oriented surface bundles over bases with amenable fundamental groups and dimension at least 2 have trivial simplicial volume. We show furthermore that all MMM-classes are hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov, verifying a weakened version of a conjecture due to Morita. Finally we consider surface bundles over products and restrictions on their characteristic classes
A space $X$ is called $W$-trivial if for every vector bundle $ξ$ over $X$, the total Stiefel-Whitney class $W(ξ)= 1$. In this article we shall investigate whether the suspensions of Dold manifolds, $\s^k D(m,n)$, is $W$-trivial or not.
We present two formulas for Chern classes of the tensor product of two vector bundles. In the first formula we consider a matrix containing Chern classes of the first bundle and we take a polynomial of this matrix with Chern classes of the second bundle as coefficients. The determinant of this expression equals the Chern polynomial of the tensor product. In the second formula we express the total Chern class of the tensor product as resultant of two explicit polynomials with coefficient involving Chern classes of each vector bundles. This approach leads to determinantal formulas for the total …
In this article we show that there are at most two integers up to $2(n-k)$, which can occur as the degrees of nonzero Stiefel-Whitney classes of vector bundles over the Stiefel manifold $V_k(\mathbb{R}^n)$. In the case when $n> k(k+4)/4$, we show that if $w_{2^q}(ξ)$ is the first nonzero Stiefel-Whitney class of a vector bundle $ξ$ over $V_k(\mathbb{R}^n)$ then $w_t(ξ)$ is zero if $t$ is not a multiple of $2^q.$ In addition, we give relations among Stiefel-Whitney classes whose degrees are multiples of $2^q$.
In this paper, we consider an obstruction-theoretical construction of characteristic classes of fiber bundles by simplicial method. We can get a certain obstruction class for a deformation of $C_\infty$-algebra models of fibers and a characteristic map from the exterior algebra of a vector space of derivations. Applying this construction for a surface bundle, we obtain the Euler class of a sphere bundle and the Morita-Miller-Mumford classes of a bundle with positive genus fiber.
This paper proves an integral version of the Riemann-Roch theorem for surface bundles, comparing the standard cohomology classes with the cohomology classes coming from the symplectic group.
The Miller-Morita-Mumford classes associate to an oriented surface bundle $E\to B$ a class $κ_i(E) \in H^{2i}(B;\Z)$. In this note we define for each prime $p$ and each integer $i\geq 1$ a secondary characteristic class $λ_i(E) \in H^{2i(p-1)-2}(B;\Z)/\Zκ_{i(p-1)-1}$. The mod $p$ reduction $λ_i(E) \in H^*(B; \F_p)$ has zero indeterminacy and satisfies $pλ_i(E) = κ_{i(p-1)-1}(E) \in H^*(B;\Z/p^2)$.
We propose a definition of persistent Stiefel-Whitney classes of vector bundle filtrations. It relies on seeing vector bundles as subsets of some Euclidean spaces. The usual Čech filtration of such a subset can be endowed with a vector bundle structure, that we call a Čech bundle filtration. We show that this construction is stable and consistent. When the dataset is a finite sample of a line bundle, we implement an effective algorithm to compute its persistent Stiefel-Whitney classes. In order to use simplicial approximation techniques in practice, we develop a notion of weak simplicial appro…
The generalized Morita-Miller-Mumford classes of a smooth oriented manifold bundle are defined as the image of the characteristic classes of the vertical tangent bundle under the Gysin homomorphism. We show that if the dimension of the manifold is even, then all MMM-classes in rational cohomology are nonzero for some bundle. In odd dimensions, this is also true with one exception: the MMM-class associated with the Hirzebruch $\cL$-class is always zero. We also show a similar result for holomorphic fibre bundles.
We establish a Gysin formula for Schubert bundles and a strong version of the duality theorem in Schubert calculus on Grassmann bundles. We then combine them to compute the fundamental classes of Schubert bundles in Grassmann bundles, which yields a new proof of the Giambelli formula for vector bundles.
For any complex vector bundle $E^k$ of rank $k$ over a manifold $M^m$ with Chern classes $c_i \in H^{2i}(M^m,\Z)$ and any non-negative integers $l_1, >..., l_k$ we show the existence of a positive number $N(k,m)$ and the existence of a complex vector bundle $\hat E^k$ over $M^m$ whose Chern classes are $ N(k,m) \cdot l_i\cdot c_i\in H^{2i} (M^m,\Z)$. We also discuss a version of this statement for holomorphic vector bundles over projective algebraic manifolds.
We show that every bad orbifold vector bundle can be realized as the restriction of a good orbifold vector bundle to a suborbifold of the base space. We give an explicit construction of this result in which the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of the two base spaces are isomorphic (as additive groups). This construction is used to indicate an extension of the Chern-Weil construction of characteristic classes to bad orbifold vector bundles. In particular, we apply this construction to the orbifold Euler class and demonstrate that it acts as an obstruction to the existence of nonvanishing sections.
In this paper, complex vector bundles of rank $r$ over $8$-dimensional spin$^{c}$ manifolds are classified in terms of the Chern classes of the complex vector bundles and the cohomology ring of the manifolds, where $r = 3$ or $4$. As an application, we got that two rank $3$ complex vector bundles over $4$-dimensional complex projective spaces $\C P^{4}$ are isomorphic if and only if they have the same Chern classes. Moreover, the Chern classes of rank $3$ complex vector bundles over $\C P^{4}$ are determined. Combing Thomas's and Switzer's results with our work, we can assert that complex vect…
In this work, we study topological properties of surface bundles, with an emphasis on surface bundles with a spin structure. We develop a criterion to decide whether a given manifold bundle has a spin structure and specialize it to surface bundles. We study examples of surface bundles, in particular sphere and torus bundles and surface bundles induced by actions of finite groups on Riemann surfaces. The examples are used to show that the obstruction cohomology class against the existence of a spin structure is nonzero. We develop a connection between the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for familie…
Let $G$ be a Lie group and $G\to\Aut(G)$ be the canonical group homomorphism induced by the adjoint action of a group on itself. We give an explicit description of a 1-1 correspondence between Morita equivalence classes of, on the one hand, principal 2-group $[G\to\Aut(G)]$-bundles over Lie groupoids and, on the other hand, $G$-extensions of Lie groupoids (i.e.\ between principal $[G\to\Aut(G)]$-bundles over differentiable stacks and $G$-gerbes over differentiable stacks). This approach also allows us to identify $G$-bound gerbes and $[Z(G)\to 1]$-group bundles over differentiable stacks, wher…
Using compactifications in the logarithmic cotangent bundle, we obtain a formula for the Chern classes of the pushforward of Lagrangian cycles under an open embedding with normal crossing complement. This generalizes earlier results of Aluffi and Wu-Zhou. The first application of our formula is a geometric description of Chern-Mather classes of an arbitrary very affine variety, generalizing earlier results of Huh which held under the smooth and schon assumptions. As the second application, we confirm an involution formula relating sectional maximum likelihood (ML) degrees and ML bidegrees, whi…
We study the homotopy aspects of the twisted Chern classes of torsion bundle gerbe modules. Using Sullivan's rational homotopy theory, we realize the twisted Chern classes at the level of classifying spaces. The construction suggests a notion, which we call fractional U-structure serving as a universal framework to study the twisted Chern classes of torsion bundle gerbe modules from the perspective of classifying spaces. Based on this, we introduce and study higher fractional structures on torsion bundle gerbe modules parallel to the higher structures on ordinary vector bundles.
We give push-forward formulas for all flag bundles of types A, B, C, D. The formulas (and also the proofs) involve only Segre classes of the original vector bundles and characteristic classes of universal bundles. As an application, we provide new determinantal formulas.
Suppose $X$ is a smooth complex algebraic variety. A necessary condition for a complex topological vector bundle on $X$ (viewed as a complex manifold) to be algebraic is that all Chern classes must be algebraic cohomology classes, i.e., lie in the image of the cycle class map. We analyze the question of whether algebraicity of Chern classes is sufficient to guarantee algebraizability of complex topological vector bundles. For affine varieties of dimension $\leq 3$, it is known that algebraicity of Chern classes of a vector bundle guarantees algebraizability of the vector bundle. In contrast, w…
Let G be a connected Lie group, G^d the underlying discrete group, and BG, BG^d their classifying spaces. Let R denote the radical of G. We show that all classes in the image of the canonical map in cohomology H^*(BG,R)->H^*(BG^d,R) are bounded if and only if the derived group [R,R] is simply connected. We also give equivalent conditions in terms of stable commutator length and distortion.
We prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the tangent bundle of the Hilbert schemes of points on a non-compact simply-connected surface. As a corollary, we deduce a closed formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of these Hilbert schemes. We also give a closed formula for the multiplicative characteristic classes of the tautological bundles associated to a line bundle on the surface. We finally remark which implications the results here have for the Hilbert schemes of points of an arbitrary surface.
We study the ring generated by the Chern classes of tautological line bundles on the moduli space of parabolic bundles of arbitrary rank on a Riemann surface. We show the Poincaré duals to these Chern classes have simple geometric representatives. We use this construction to show that the ring generated by these Chern classes vanishes below the dimension of the moduli space, in analogy with the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture for stable bundles.
We prove explicit formulas for Chern classes of tensor products of vector bundles, with coefficients given by certain universal polynomials in the ranks of the two bundles.
