We give an informal exposition of pushforwards and orientations in generalized cohomology theories in the language of spectra. Smooth and proper dg-algebras have an Euler class valued in the Hochschild homology of the algebra. This Euler class is worthy of this name since it satisfies many familiar properties including compatibility with the familiar pairing on the Hochschild homology of the algebra and that of its opposite. We show that the fixed-point formula applied to the free loopspace of a manifold X can be understood as a Riemann-Roch formula for the quotient of the formal group of E by a free cyclic subgroup. The quotient is not representable, but (locally at p) its p-torsion subgroup is, by a p-divisible group of height one greater than the formal group of E.
