A pointed graph $(Γ,v_0)$ induces a family of transition matrices in Wildberger's construction of a hermitian hypergroup via a random walk on $Γ$ starting from $v_0$. We will give a necessary condition for producing a hermitian hypergroup as we assume a weaker condition than the distance-regularity for $(Γ,v_0)$. The condition obtained in this paper connects the transition matrices and the adjacency matrices associated with $Γ$.
We study the distribution of the cokernels of adjacency matrices (the Smith groups) of certain models of random $r$-regular graphs and directed graphs, using recent mixing results of Mészáros. We explain how convergence of such distributions to a limiting probability distribution implies asymptotic nonsingularity of the matrices, giving another perspective on recent results of Huang and Mészáros on asymptotic nonsingularity of adjacency matrices of random regular directed and undirected graphs, respectively. We also remark on the new distributions on finite abelian groups that arise, in partic…
Let $d\geq 3$ be a fixed integer and $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed or undirected graph on $n$ vertices. We show there exist constants $\mathfrak d>0$, \begin{align*} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in $\mathbb R$})\leq n^{-\mathfrak{d}}, \end{align*} for $n$ sufficiently large. This answers an open problem by Frieze [12] and Vu [28,19]. The key idea is to study the singularity probability of adjacency matrices over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_p$. The proof combines a local central limit theorem and a large deviation estimate.
We propose a quantum walk defined by digraphs (mixed graphs). This is like Grover walk that is perturbed by a certain complex-valued function defined by digraphs. The discriminant of this quantum walk is a matrix that is a certain normalization of generalized Hermitian adjacency matrices. Furthermore, we give definitions of the positive and negative supports of the transfer matrix, and clarify explicit formulas of their supports of the square. In addition, we give tables by computer on the identification of digraphs by their eigenvalues.
In [Steve Butler. A note about cospectral graphs for the adjacency and normalized Laplacian matrices. Linear Multilinear Algebra, 58(3-4):387-390, 2010.], Butler constructed a family of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. In this article, we extend this construction for generating larger classes of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. Also, we provide a couple of constructions of non-bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for the adjacency matrices but not necessaril…
In this paper, we discuss the adjacency matrices of finite undirected simple graphs over a finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. We apply symmetric (row and column) elementary transformations to the adjacency matrix over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in order to get a direct sum decomposition by other adjacency matrices. In this paper, we give a complete description of the direct sum decomposition of the adjacency matrix of any graph over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for any odd prime $p$. Our key tool is quadratic residues of $\mathbb{F}_p$.
The traditional adjacency matrix of a mixed graph is not symmetric in general, hence its eigenvalues may be not real. To overcome this obstacle, several authors have recently defined and studied various Hermitian adjacency matrices of digraphs or mixed graphs. In this work we unify previous work and offer a new perspective on the subject by introducing the concept of monographs. Moreover, we consider questions of cospectrality.
This paper deals with adjacency matrices of signed cycle graphs and chemical descriptors based on them. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrices are calculated and their efficacy in classifying different signed cycles is determined. The efficacy of some numerical indices is also examined.
Let $d\geq 3$ be a fixed integer, and a prime number $p$ such that $\gcd(p,d)=1$. Let $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. We show that as a random matrix in ${\mathbb F}_p$, \begin{equation} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in ${\mathbb F}_p$})\leq \frac{1+{\mathrm{o}}(1)}{p-1}, \end{equation} as $n$ goes to infinity. As a consequence, as a random matrix in $\mathbb R$, \begin{equation} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in $\mathbb R$})={\mathrm{o}}(1) \end{equation} as $n$ goes to infinity. This answers an open problem by Frieze [12] and Vu [29…
We prove that the (non-symmetric) adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices is asymptotically almost surely invertible, assuming $\min(d,n-d)\ge C\log^2n$ for a sufficiently large constant $C>0$. The proof makes use of a coupling of random regular digraphs formed by "shuffling" the neighborhood of a pair of vertices, as well as concentration results for the distribution of edges recently obtained by the author (arXiv:1410.5595). We also apply our general approach to prove a.a.s.\ invertibility of Hadamard products $Σ\circ Ξ$, where $Ξ$ is a matrix of iid u…
We study the equivalence between bipartiteness and symmetry of spectra of mixed graphs, for $θ$-Hermitian adjacency matrices defined by an angle $θ\in (0, π]$. We show that this equivalence holds when, for example, an angle $θ$ is an algebraic number, while it breaks down for any angle $θ\in \mathbb{Q}π$. Furthermore, we construct a family of non-bipartite mixed graphs having the symmetric spectra for given $θ\in \mathbb{Q}π$.
We consider three different models of sparse random graphs:~undirected and directed Erdős-Rényi graphs, and random bipartite graph with an equal number of left and right vertices. For such graphs we show that if the edge connectivity probability $p \in (0,1)$ satisfies $n p \ge \log n + k(n)$ with $k(n) \to \infty$ as $n \to \infty$, then the adjacency matrix is invertible with probability approaching one (here $n$ is the number of vertices in the two former cases and the number of left and right vertices in the latter case). If $np \le \log n -k(n)$ then these matrices are invertible with pro…
It can be shown that any symmetric $(0,1)$-matrix $A$ with $\tr A = 0$ can be interpreted as the adjacency matrix of a simple, finite graph. The square of an adjacency matrix $A^2=(s_{ij})$ has the property that $s_{ij}$ represents the number of walks of length two from vertex $i$ to vertex $j$. With this information, the motivating question behind this paper was to determine what conditions on a matrix $S$ are needed to have $S=A(G)^2$ for some graph $G$. Structural results imposed by the matrix $S$ include detecting bipartiteness or connectedness and counting four cycles. Row and column sums…
Let ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ be the set of all $d$-regular directed graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $G$ be a graph chosen uniformly at random from ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ and $M$ be its adjacency matrix. We show that $M$ is invertible with probability at least $1-C\ln^{3} d/\sqrt{d}$ for $C\leq d\leq cn/\ln^2 n$, where $c, C$ are positive absolute constants. To this end, we establish a few properties of $d$-regular directed graphs. One of them, a Littlewood-Offord type anti-concentration property, is of independent interest. Let $J$ be a subset of vertices of $G$ with $|J|\approx n/d$. Let $δ_i$ be the i…
A mixed multigraph is obtained from an undirected multigraph by orienting a subset of its edges. In this paper, we study a new Hermitian matrix representation of mixed multigraphs, give an introduction to cospectral operations on mixed multigraphs, and characterize switching equivalent mixed multigraphs in terms of fundamental cycle basis. As an application, an upper bound of cospectral classes of mixed multigraphs with the same underlying graph is obtained.
The universal adjacency matrix $U$ of a graph $Γ$, with adjacency matrix $A$, is a linear combination of $A$, the diagonal matrix $D$ of vertex degrees, the identity matrix $I$, and the all-1 matrix $J$ with real coefficients, that is, $U=c_1 A+c_2 D+c_3 I+ c_4 J$, with $c_i\in {\mathbb R}$ and $c_1\neq 0$. Thus, as particular cases, $U$ may be the adjacency matrix, the Laplacian, the signless Laplacian, and the Seidel matrix. In this note, we show that basically the same method introduced before by the authors can be applied for determining the spectra and bases of all the corresponding eigen…
We study the spectra of mixed graphs about its Hermitian adjacency matrix of the second kind (i.e. N-matrix) introduced by Mohar [1]. We extend some results and define one new Hermitian adjacency matrix, and the entry corresponding to an arc from $u$ to $v$ is equal to the $k$-th( or the third) root of unity, i.e. $ω = cos(2π/k) + \textbf{i} \ sin(2π/k), k {\geq} 3$; the entry corresponding to an undirected edge is equal to 1, and 0 otherwise. In this paper, we characterize the cospectrality conditions for a mixed graph and its underlying graph. In section 4, we determine a sharp upper bound o…
Let $G^σ$ be an orientation of a simple graph $G$. In this paper, the permanental polynomial of an oriented graph $G^σ$ is introduced. The coefficients of the permanental polynomial of $G^σ$ are interpreted in terms of the graph structure of $G^σ$, and it is proved that all orientations $G^σ$ of $G$ have the same permanental polynomial if and only if $G$ has no even cycles. Furthermore, the roots of the permanental polynomial of $G^σ$ are studied.
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and $v_{i}\in V$, denote by $d_{i}$ the degree of vertex $v_{i}$. Let $f(x, y)>0$ be a real symmetric function in $x$ and $y$. The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle f(d_{i}, d_{j})$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent and 0 otherwise. Li and Wang \cite{U9} tried to unify methods to study spectral radius of weighted adjacency matrices of graphs weighted by various topological indices. If $\displaystyle f'_{x}(x, y)\geq0$ and $\displaystyle f''_{x}(x, y)\geq0$, then $\displ…
We establish the theory for pretty good state transfer in discrete-time quantum walks. For a class of walks, we show that pretty good state transfer is characterized by the spectrum of certain Hermitian adjacency matrix of the graph; more specifically, the vertices involved in pretty good state transfer must be $m$-strongly cospectral relative to this matrix, and the arccosines of its eigenvalues must satisfy some number theoretic conditions. Using normalized adjacency matrices, cyclic covers, and the theory on linear relations between geodetic angles, we construct several infinite families of…
Natural join of $di-bigraphs$ that is directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate the so called cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. $KoDAGs$ are special orderable directed acyclic graphs which are cover relation digraphs of cobweb posets introduced by the author few years ago. $KoDAGs$ appear to be distinguished family of $Ferrers$ digraphs which are natural join of a corresponding ordering chain of one direction directed cliques called $di-bicliques$. These digraphs serve to represent faithfully correspon…
Let $G$ be a simple graph. In 1986, Herbert Wilf asked what kind of graphs have an eigenvector with entries formed only by $\pm 1$? In this paper, we answer this question for the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrix of a graph. Besides, we generalize the concept of an exact graph to the adjacency and signless Laplacian matrices. Infinity families of exact graphs for all those matrices are presented.
Let $0 \in Γ$ and $Γ\setminus \{0\}$ be a subgroup of the complex numbers of unit modulus. Define $\mathcal{H}_{n}(Γ)$ to be the set of all $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices with entries in $Γ$, whose diagonal entries are zero. The matrices $A,B\in \mathcal{H}_{n}(Γ)$ are said to be switching equivalent if there is a diagonal matrix $D$, in which the diagonal entries belong to $Γ\setminus \{0\}$, such that $D^{-1} A D=B$. We find a characterization, in terms of fundamental cycles of graphs, of switching equivalence of matrices in $\mathcal{H}_{n}(Γ)$. We give sufficient conditions to characterize…
We generalize the concept of strong walk-regularity to directed graphs. We call a digraph strongly $\ell$-walk-regular with $\ell >1$ if the number of walks of length $\ell$ from a vertex to another vertex depends only on whether the two vertices are the same, adjacent, or not adjacent. This generalizes also the well-studied strongly regular digraphs and a problem posed by Hoffman. Our main tools are eigenvalue methods. The case that the adjacency matrix is diagonalizable with only real eigenvalues resembles the undirected case. We show that a digraph $Γ$ with only real eigenvalues whose adjac…
We develop the theory of linear evolution equations associated with the adjacency matrix of a graph, focusing in particular on infinite graphs of two kinds: uniformly locally finite graphs as well as locally finite line graphs. We discuss in detail qualitative properties of solutions to these problems by quadratic form methods. We distinguish between backward and forward evolution equations: the latter have typical features of diffusive processes, but cannot be well-posed on graphs with unbounded degree. On the contrary, well-posedness of backward equations is a typical feature of line graphs.…
The ensemble $\CUE^{(q)}$ of truncated random unitary matrices is a deformation of the usual Circular Unitary Ensemble depending on a discrete non-negative parameter $q.$ $\CUE^{(q)}$ is an exactly solved model of random contraction matrices originally introduced in the context of scattering theory. In this article, we exhibit a connection between $\CUE^{(q)}$ and Fisher's random-turns vicious walker model from statistical mechanics. In particular, we show that the moment generating function of the trace of a random matrix from $\CUE^{(q)}$ is a generating series for the partition function of …
We study the continuous-time quantum walks on graphs in the adjacency algebra of the $n$-cube and its related distance regular graphs. For $k\geq 2$, we find graphs in the adjacency algebra of $(2^{k+2}-8)$-cube that admit instantaneous uniform mixing at time $π/2^k$ and graphs that have perfect state transfer at time $π/2^k$. We characterize the folded $n$-cubes, the halved $n$-cubes and the folded halved $n$-cubes whose adjacency algebra contains a complex Hadamard matrix. We obtain the same conditions for the characterization of these graphs admitting instantaneous uniform mixing.
In 1960, Hoffman and Singleton \cite{HS60} solved a celebrated equation for square matrices of order $n$, which can be written as $$ (κ- 1) I_n + J_n - A A^{\rm T} = A$$ where $I_n$, $J_n$, and $A$ are the identity matrix, the all one matrix, and a $(0,1)$--matrix with all row and column sums equal to $κ$, respectively. If $A$ is an incidence matrix of some configuration $\cal C$ of type $n_κ$, then the left-hand side $Θ(A):= (κ- 1)I_n + J_n - A A^{\rm T}$ is an adjacency matrix of the non--collinearity graph $Γ$ of $\cal C$. In certain situations, $Θ(A)$ is also an incidence matrix of some $n…
Over forty years ago, Goethals and Seidel showed that if the adjacency algebra of a strongly regular graph $X$ contains a Hadamard matrix then $X$ is either of Latin square type or of negative Latin square type. We extend their result to complex Hadamard matrices and find only three additional families of parameters for which the strongly regular graphs have complex Hadamard matrices in their adjacency algebras. Moreover we show that there are only three distance regular covers of the complete graph that give complex Hadamard matrices.
Let G be a graph with set of vertices 1,...,n and adjacency matrix A of size nxn. Let d(i,j)=d, we say that f_d:N->N is a d-function on G if for every pair of vertices i,j and k>=d, we have a_ij^(k)=f_d(k). If this function f_d exists on G we say that G is d-walk regular. We prove that G is d-walk regular if and only if for every pair of vertices i,j at distance <=d and for d<=k<=n+d-1, we have that a_ij^(k) is independent of the pair i,j. Equivalently, the single condition exp(A)*A_d=cA_d holds for some constant c, where A_d is the adjacency matrix of the d-distance graph and * denotes the Sc…
In the theory of line graphs of undirected graphs there exists an important theorem linking the incidence matrix of the root graph to the adjacency matrix of its line graph. For directed or mixed graphs, however, the exists no analogous result. The goal of this article is to present aligned definitions of the adjacency matrix, the incidence matrix and line graph of a mixed graph such that the mentioned theorem is valid for mixed graphs.
In an earlier work, the author together with Guo [Hermitian adjacency matrix of digraphs and mixed graphs, J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 217-248] introduced the Hermitian adjacency matrix of directed (and partially directed) graphs. However, it appears that a more natural Hermitian matrix exists, and it is the purpose of this note to bring this new Hermitian matrix to the attention of researchers in algebraic graph theory.
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of corona of graphs. This construction generalizes the generalized corona of graphs (consequently, the corona of graphs), the cluster of graphs, the corona-vertex subdivision graph of graphs and the corona-edge subdivision graph of graphs. Further, it enables to get some more variants of corona of graphs as its particular cases. To determine the spectra of the adjacency, Laplacian and the signless Laplacian matrices of the above mentioned graphs, we define a notion namely, the coronal of a matrix constrained by an index set, which generalizes the co…
We consider the continuous-time quantum walk defined on the adjacency matrix of a graph. At each instant, the walk defines a mixing matrix which is doubly-stochastic. The average of the mixing matrices contains relevant information about the quantum walk and about the graph. We show that it is the matrix of transformation of the orthogonal projection onto the commutant algebra of the adjacency matrix, restricted to diagonal matrices. Using this formulation of the average mixing matrix, we find connections between its rank and automorphisms of the graph.
Let $G$ be a connected graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$. The distance matrix $D(G)$ of $G$ has rows and columns indexed by $V(G)$ with $uv$-entry equal to the distance $\mathrm{dist}(u,v)$ which is the number of edges in a shortest path between the vertices $u$ and $v$. The transmission $\mathrm{trs}(u)$ of $u$ is defined as $\sum_{v\in V(G)}\mathrm{dist}(u,v)$. Let $\mathrm{trs}(G)$ be the diagonal matrix with the transmissions of the vertices of $G$ in the diagonal, and $\mathrm{deg}(G)$ the diagonal matrix with the degrees of the vertices in the diagonal. In this paper we investigate the …
For a given complex square matrix $A$ with constant row sum, we establish two new eigenvalue inclusion sets. Using these bounds, first we derive bounds for the second largest and smallest eigenvalues of adjacency matrices of $k$-regular graphs. Then, we establish some bounds for the second largest and the smallest eigenvalues of the normalized adjacency matrices of graphs and the second smallest eigenvalue and the largest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrices of graphs. Sharpness of these bounds are verified by examples.
In this paper, we determine periodicity of quantum walks defined by mixed paths and mixed cycles. By the spectral mapping theorem of quantum walks, consideration of periodicity is reduced to eigenvalue analysis of $η$-Hermitian adjacency matrices. First, we investigate coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of $η$-Hermitian adjacency matrices. We show that the characteristic polynomials of mixed trees and their underlying graphs are same. We also define $n+1$ types of mixed cycles and show that every mixed cycle is switching equivalent to one of them. We use these results to discuss pe…
New criteria for which Cayley graphs of cyclic groups of any order can be completely determined--up to isomorphism--by the eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices is presented. Secondly, a new construction for pairs of nonisomorphic Cayley graphs of cyclic groups with the same list of eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices will be presented.
The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is the $|V|\times|V|$ matrix whose $ij$-entry equals $f(d_{i},d_j)$, where $f(x,y)$ is a symmetric function such that $f(d_i,d_j)>0$ if $ij\in E$ and $f(d_i,d_j)=0$ if $ij\notin E$ and $d_i$ is the degree of the vertex $i$. In this paper, we determine the unique graph having the largest spectral radius of $A_{f}(G)$ among all the bicyclic graphs under the assumption that $f(x,y)$ is increasing and convex in $x$ and $f(x_1,y_1)\geq f(x_2,y_2)$ when $|x_1-y_1|>|x_2-y_2|$ and $x_1+y_1=x_2+y_2$. Moreover, we determine the unique …
The adjacency matrix of a graph G is the Hamiltonian for a continuous-time quantum walk on the vertices of G. Although the entries of the adjacency matrix are integers, its eigenvalues are generally irrational and, because of this, the behaviour of the walk is typically not periodic. In consequence we can usually only compute numerical approximations to parameters of the walk. In this paper, we develop theory to exactly study any quantum walk generated by an integral Hamiltonian. As a result, we provide exact methods to compute the average of the mixing matrices, and to decide whether pretty g…
Walks in a directed graph can be given a partially ordered structure that extends to possibly unconnected objects, called hikes. Studying the incidence algebra on this poset reveals unsuspected relations between walks and self-avoiding hikes. These relations are derived by considering truncated versions of the characteristic polynomial of the weighted adjacency matrix, resulting in a collection of matrices whose entries enumerate the self-avoiding hikes of length $\ell$ from one vertex to another.
A universal adjacency matrix of a graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$ is any matrix of the form $U = αA + βI + γJ + δD$ with $α\neq 0$, where $I$ is the identity matrix, $J$ is the all-ones matrix and $D$ is the diagonal matrix with the vertex degrees. In the case that $G$ is the disjoint union of regular graphs, we present an expression for the characteristic polynomials of the various universal adjacency matrices in terms of the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency matrices of the components. As a consequence we obtain a formula for the characteristic polynomial of the Seidel matrix o…
A certain signed adjacency matrix of the hypercube, which Hao Huang used last year to resolve the sensitivity conjecture, is closely related to the unique, 4-cycle free, 2-fold cover of the hypercube. We develop a framework in which this connection is a natural first example of the relationship between group labeled adjacency matrices with few eigenvalues, and combinatorially interesting covering graphs. In particular, we define a two-eigenvalue cover to be a covering graph whose adjacency spectra differs (as a multiset) from that of the graph it covers by exactly two eigenvalues. We show that…
We study the average probability that a discrete-time quantum walk finds a marked vertex on a graph. We first show that, for a regular graph, the spectrum of the transition matrix is determined by the weighted adjacency matrix of an augmented graph. We then consider the average search probability on a distance regular graph, and find a formula in terms of the adjacency matrix of its vertex-deleted subgraph. In particular, for any family of (1) complete graphs, or (2) strongly regular graphs, or (3) distance regular graphs of a fixed parameter $d$, varying valency $k$ and varying size $n$, such…
A matrix is called acyclic if replacing the diagonal entries with $0$, and the nonzero diagonal entries with $1$, yields the adjacency matrix of a forest. In this paper we show that null space and the rank of a acyclic matrix with $0$ in the diagonal is obtained from the null space and the rank of the adjacency matrix of the forest by multipliying by non-singular diagonal matrices. We combine these methods with an algorithm for finding a sparsest basis of the null space of a forest to provide an optimal time algorithm for finding a sparsest basis of the null space of acyclic matrices with $0$ …
We determine connected bipartite regular graphs with four distinct adjacency eigenvalues that induce periodic Grover walks, and show that it is only $C_6$. We also show that there are only three kinds of the second largest eigenvalues of bipartite regular periodic graphs with five distinct eigenvalues. Using walk-regularity, we enumerate feasible spectra for such graphs.
