We study a $Z_2 \times Z'_2$ symmetric 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM), wherein two of the doublets are inert and one is active (thus denoted in literature as I(2+1)HDM), yielding a two-component Dark Matter (DM) sector. The two DM candidates emerge as the lightest scalar component of a different inert doublet, each with a different odd discrete parity, and cooperate to achieve the correct relic density. When a sufficient mass difference exists between the two DM candidates, it is possible to test the presence of both in present and/or forthcoming facilities, as the corresponding masses are typically at the electroweak scale. Specifically, the light DM component can be probed by the nuclear recoil energy in direct detection experiments while the heavy DM component appears through the photon flux in indirect detection experiments. In fact, the DM mass sensitivity that the two experimental set-ups can achieve should be adequate to establish the presence of two different DM signals. This result has been obtained in the presence of a thorough theoretical analysis of the stability conditions of the vacuum structure emerging from our I(2+1)HDM construct, ensuring that the model configurations adopted are physical, and of up-to-date constraints coming from data collected by both space and ground experiments, ensuring that the coupling and mass spectra investigated are viable phenomenologically.
We study how to unravel the dark matter blind spots by phase transition gravitational waves in synergy with collider signatures at electroweak one-loop level taking the inert doublet model as an example. We perform a detailed Monte Carlo study at the future lepton colliders in the favored parameter space, which is consistent with current dark matter experiments and collider constraints. Our studies demonstrate that the Circular Electron Positron Collider and other future lepton colliders have the potential to explore the dark matter blind spots.
We present a novel study of the non-abelian vector dark matter candidate $W^\prime$ with a MeV$-$GeV low mass range, accompanied by a dark photon $A^\prime$ and a dark $Z^\prime$ of similar masses in the context of a simplified gauged two-Higgs-doublet model. The model is scrutinized by taking into account various experimental constraints including dark photon searches, electroweak precision data, relic density of dark matter together with its direct and indirect searches, mono-jet and Higgs collider physics from LHC. The viable parameter space of the model consistent with all experimental and…
The halo dark matter (DM) can be gravitationally captured by the Sun. For self-interacting DM (SIDM), we show that the number of DM trapped inside the Sun remains unsuppressed even if the DM-nucleon cross section is negligible. We consider a SIDM model where $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is introduced to account for the DM self-interaction. Such a model naturally leads to isospin violation for DM-nucleon interaction, although isospin symmetry is still allowed as a special case. We show that the detection of neutrino signature from DM annihilation in the Sun can probe those SIDM parameter ranges not re…

Standard Model extensions with light axions are well-motivated by the observed Dark Matter abundance and the Peccei-Quinn solution to the Strong CP Problem. In general such axions can have large flavor-violating couplings to SM fermions, which naturally arise in scenarios where the Peccei-Quinn symmetry also explains the hierarchical pattern of fermion masses and mixings. I will discuss how these couplings allow for efficient axion production from the decays of SM particles, giving the opportunity to probe flavored axion Dark Matter with precision flavor experiments, astrophysics and cosmology…
A very light (GeV scale) dark gauge boson ($Z'$) is a recently highlighted hypothetical particle that can address some astrophysical anomalies as well as the $3.6 σ$ deviation in the muon $g$-2 measurement. We suggest top quark decays as a venue to search for light dark force carriers at the LHC. Such $Z'$s can be easily boosted, and they can decay into highly collimated leptons (lepton-jet) with large branching ratio. We investigate a scenario where a top quark decays to $b W$ accompanied by one or multiple dark force carriers and find that such a scenario could be easily probed at the early …
In single-component theories of dark matter, the $2\to 2$ amplitudes for dark-matter production, annihilation, and scattering can be related to each other through various crossing symmetries. These crossing relations lie at the heart of the celebrated complementarity which underpins different existing dark-matter search techniques and strategies. In multi-component theories of dark matter, by contrast, there can be many different dark-matter components with differing masses. This then opens up a new, "diagonal" direction for dark-matter complementarity: the possibility of dark-matter decay fro…
We show that observations of solar $γ$-rays offer a novel probe of dark matter in scenarios where interactions with the visible sector proceed via a long-lived mediator. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate that there exists a class of models which yield solar $γ$-ray fluxes observable with the next generation of $γ$-ray telescopes, while being allowed by a variety of current experimental constraints. The parameter space allowed by big bang nucleosynthesis and beam dump experiments naturally leads to mediator lifetimes sufficient to produce observable solar $γ$-ray signals. The model allows…
We show that the study of neutrino capture on tritium, for non-relativistic neutrinos, can allow to distinguish among the various neutrino models, eventually prove the quantum field theory condensation effects and permit to test the hypothesis according to which the flavor vacuum energy gives a contribution to the dark matter of the universe. Indeed, we show that the capture rate depends on the neutrino model considered, and that it brings an imprint of the flavor vacuum condensate. Experiments like PTOLEMY, designed to reveal the cosmic neutrino background, then can give an indication of the …
We consider dark sectors with spontaneously broken gauge symmetries, where cascade decays of the dark sector fields naturally produce multi-Higgs boson final states along with dark matter. Our study focuses on two and three Higgs boson final states with missing energy using a multivariate analysis with Boosted Decision Trees. We find that the di-Higgs boson channel is quite promising for the $\bar b b + γγ$ and $\bar b b + \bar \ell \ell$ decay modes. The tri-Higgs boson final state with missing energy, on the other hand, appears to be beyond the reach of the LHC in analogous channels. This ma…
We investigate constraints on the properties of light dark matter which can be obtained from analysis of invisible quarkonium decays at high intensity electron-positron colliders in the framework of a low energy effective field theory. A matrix element analysis of all contact operators pertinent for these meson decays allows for a model-independent calculation of associated dark matter-nucleon scattering and dark matter annihilation cross sections. Assuming dark matter couples universally to all quark flavors, we then obtain bounds on nucleon scattering which complement direct dark matter dete…
Present and upcoming neutrino experiments can have considerable sensitivity to dark sectors that interact feebly with the Standard Model. We consider dark sectors interacting with the SM through irrelevant portals that are motivated on general principles. We derive bounds on such scenarios by considering decays of dark sector excitations inside the neutrino detector, placed downstream from the target. Our approach is model agnostic and applies to a wide range of dark sector models, both strongly and weakly coupled. In this approach, the dark sector is characterized by two scales: $Λ_\text{UV}$…
There exists a general model framework where dark matter can be a vanilla WIMP-like thermal relic with a mass of ${\cal O}$(100 GeV), but it still escapes direct detection. This happens, if the dark matter particle is a Goldstone boson whose scattering with ordinary matter is suppressed at low energy due to momentum-dependent interactions. We outline general features of this type of models and analyse a simple realization of these dynamics as a concrete example. In particular, we show that although direct detection of this type of dark matter candidate is very challenging, the indirect detecti…

Scalar dark matter (DM) in a theory introduces hierarchy problems, and suffers from the inability to predict the preferred mass range for the DM. In a WIMP-like minimal scalar DM set-up we show that the infinite derivative theory can predict DM mass and its coupling. The scale of non-locality (M) in such a theory in its lower-most limit (constrained by LHC) implies a DM mass $\sim$ TeV and a coupling with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs $λ_\mathrm{HS} \sim 10^{-2}$. Planned DM direct detection experiments reaching such sensitivity in the DM will effectively translate into lower bounds on the sca…
We show how current LIGO data is able to probe interesting theories beyond the Standard Model, particularly Dark Sectors where a Dark Higgs triggers symmetry breaking via a first-order phase transition. We use publicly available LIGO O2 data to illustrate how these sectors, even if disconnected from the Standard Model, can be probed by Gravitational Wave detectors. We link the LIGO measurements with the model content and mass scale of the Dark Sector, finding that current O2 data is testing a broad set of scenarios where the breaking of $SU(N)$ theories with $N_f$ fermions is triggered by a Da…
We study a new physics scenario with two inert and one active scalar doublets, hence a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM). We impose a $Z_2 \times Z'_2$ symmetry onto such a 3HDM with one inert doublet odd under the $Z_2$ transformation and the other odd under the $Z'_2$ one. Such a construction leads to a two-component Dark Matter (DM) model. It has been shown that, when there is a sufficient mass difference between the two DM candidates, it is possible to probe the light DM candidate in the nuclear recoil energy in direct detection experiments and the heavy DM component in the photon flux in indir…
In this report we summarize the many dark matter searches currently being pursued through four complementary approaches: direct detection, indirect detection, collider experiments, and astrophysical probes. The essential features of broad classes of experiments are described, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The complementarity of the different dark matter searches is discussed qualitatively and illustrated quantitatively in two simple theoretical frameworks. Our primary conclusion is that the diversity of possible dark matter candidates requires a balanced program drawing from al…

We propose a LHC search for dilepton resonances in association with large missing energy as a generic probe of TeV dark sector models. Such resonances can occur if the dark sector includes a U(1) gauge boson, or Z', which kinetically mixes with the Standard Model U(1). For small mixing, direct 2 to 1 production of the Z' is not visible in standard resonance searches due to the large Drell-Yan background. However, there may be significant production of the Z' boson in processes involving other dark sector particles, resulting in final states with a Z' resonance and missing transverse momentum. …
We show that proton storage ring experiments designed to search for proton electric dipole moments can also be used to look for the nearly dc spin precession induced by dark energy and ultra-light dark matter. These experiments are sensitive to both axion-like and vector fields. Current technology permits probes of these phenomena up to three orders of magnitude beyond astrophysical limits. The relativistic boost of the protons in these rings allows this scheme to have sensitivities comparable to atomic co-magnetometer experiments that can also probe similar phenomena. These complementary appr…
The existence of cosmological dark matter is in the bedrock of the modern cosmology. The dark matter is assumed to be nonbaryonic and to consist of new stable particles. However if composite dark matter contains stable electrically charged leptons and quarks bound by ordinary Coulomb interaction in elusive dark atoms, these charged constituents of dark atoms can be the subject of direct experimental test at the colliders. In such models the excessive negatively double charged particles are bound with primordial helium in O-helium atoms, maintaining specific nuclear-interacting form of the dark…
We consider a class of models involving interactions between ultra-light scalar dark matter and Standard Model neutrinos. Such couplings modify the neutrino mass splittings and mixing angles to include additional components that vary in time periodically with a frequency and amplitude set by the mass and energy density of the dark matter. Null results from recent searches for anomalous periodicities in the solar neutrino flux strongly constrain the dark matter-neutrino coupling to be orders of magnitude below current and projected limits derived from observations of the cosmic microwave backgr…
With ever increasing pressure from collider physics and direct detection experiments, particle physics models of TeV scale dark matter are gaining more attention. In this work, we consider two realizations of the class of scalar portal dark matter scenarios -- the inverse seesaw model and the inert doublet model. Observations by the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) of very-high-energy $γ$ rays from dark matter annihilation in the context of these models are simulated for the Draco and Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and later analyzed using ctools. We study the potential of CTA for the 5$σ$…
The nature of dark matter is one of the most pressing questions in particle physics. Yet all our present knowledge of the dark sector to date comes from its gravitational interactions with astrophysical systems. Moreover, astronomical results still have immense potential to constrain the particle properties of dark matter. We introduce a simple 2D parameter space which classifies models in terms of a particle physics interaction strength and a characteristic astrophysical scale on which new physics appears, in order to facilitate communication between the fields of particle physics and astrono…
Traditional direct searches for dark matter, looking for nuclear recoils in deep underground detectors, are challenged by an almost complete loss of sensitivity for light dark matter particles. Consequently, there is a significant effort in the community to devise new methods and experiments to overcome these difficulties, constantly pushing the limits of the lowest dark matter mass that can be probed this way. From a model-building perspective, the scattering of sub-GeV dark matter on nucleons essentially must proceed via new light mediator particles, given that collider searches place extrem…
Fine-tuning implications for complementary dark matter and LHC SUSY searches
We discuss the formation of dark compact objects in a dark matter environment in view of the possible mass dependence of pulsars on the distribution of dark matter in the Galaxy. Our results indicate that the pulsar masses should decrease going towards the center of the Milky Way due to dark matter capture, thus becoming a probe for the existence and nature of dark matter. We thus propose that the evolution of the pulsar mass in a dark matter rich environment can be used to put constraints, when combined with future experiments, on the characteristics of our Galaxy halo dark matter profile, on…
In this white paper, we discuss the prospects for characterizing and identifying dark matter using gravitational waves, covering a wide range of dark matter candidate types and signals. We argue that present and upcoming gravitational wave probes offer unprecedented opportunities for unraveling the nature of dark matter and we identify the most urgent challenges and open problems with the aim of encouraging a strong community effort at the interface between these two exciting fields of research.
Binary pulsars can be excellent probes of ultra-light dark matter. We consider the scenario where the latter is represented by a spin-2 field. The coherent oscillations of the dark matter field perturb the dynamics of binary systems, leading to secular effects for masses that resonate with the binary systems. For the range $10^{-23}$eV $\lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-17}$eV we show that current timing data could potentially constrain the universal coupling strength of dark matter to ordinary matter at the level of $α\simeq 10^{-5}$.
