Dark energy in General Relativity is typically non-interacting with other matter. However, it is possible that the dark energy interacts with the dark matter, and in this case, the dark matter can violate the universality of free fall (the weak equivalence principle). We show that some forms of the dark sector interaction do not violate weak equivalence. For those interactions that do violate weak equivalence, there are no available laboratory experiments to probe this violation for dark matter. But cosmology provides a test for violations of the equivalence principle between dark matter and baryons -- via a test for consistency of the observed galaxy velocities with the Euler equation.
Upcoming imaging surveys such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will repeatedly scan large areas of sky and have the potential to yield million-supernova catalogs. Type Ia supernovae are excellent standard candles and will provide distance measures that suffice to detect mean pairwise velocities of their host galaxies. We show that when combining these distance measures with photometric redshifts for either the supernovae or their host galaxies, the mean pairwise velocities of the host galaxies will provide a dark energy probe which is competitive with other widely discussed methods. In single-component theories of dark matter, the $2\to 2$ amplitudes for dark-matter production, annihilation, and scattering can be related to each other through various crossing symmetries. These crossing relations lie at the heart of the celebrated complementarity which underpins different existing dark-matter search techniques and strategies. In multi-component theories of dark matter, by contrast, there can be many different dark-matter components with differing masses. This then opens up a new, "diagonal" direction for dark-matter complementarity: the possibility of dark-matter decay fro…
D3-brane probes of E-type Yukawa points lead to strongly coupled nearly conformal sectors nearby the Standard Model (visible sector) which are motivated by F-theory GUTs. Realistic visible sector brane configurations induce a seesaw mass hierarchy in the hidden sector with light GUT singlets charged under a strongly coupled hidden sector U(1). Interpreting these GUT singlets as dark matter, this leads to a matter genesis scenario where the freeze out and subsequent decay of heavy mediators between the two sectors simultaneously populates comparable amounts of baryon and dark matter asymmetry. …
We explore the possibility that bound states involving dark matter particles could be detected by resonance searches at the LHC, and the generic implications of such scenarios for indirect and direct detection. We demonstrate that resonance searches are complementary to mono-jet searches and can probe dark matter masses above 1 TeV with current LHC data. We argue that this parameter regime, where the bound-state resonance channel is the most sensitive probe of the dark sector, arises most naturally in the context of non-trivial dark sectors with large couplings, nearly-degenerate dark-matter-l…
We consider a cosmological model with an interaction between dark matter and dark energy which leaves the background cosmology unaffected and only affects the evolution of the perturbations. This is achieved by introducing a coupling given in terms of the relative velocities of dark matter and dark energy. This interaction has the distinctive feature of appearing predominantly on small scales, where peculiar velocities can become important. We confront the predictions of the model to cosmological observations and find a potential alleviation of the known tension in the amplitude of density per…
In this paper we study the consequences of relaxing the hypothesis of the pressureless nature of the dark matter component when determining constraints on dark energy. To this aim we consider simple generalized dark matter models with constant equation of state parameter. We find that present-day low-redshift probes (type-Ia supernovae and baryonic acoustic oscillations) lead to a complete degeneracy between the dark energy and the dark matter sectors. However, adding the cosmic microwave background (CMB) high-redshift probe restores constraints similar to those on the standard $Λ$CDM model. W…
Recent results have shown that a field non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic Lagrangian can induce a violation of the Einstein equivalence principle. { This kind of coupling is present in a very wide class of gravitation theories.} In a cosmological context, this would break the validity of the cosmic distance duality relation as well as cause a time variation of the fine structure constant. Here, we improve constraints on this scenario by using four different observables: the luminosity distance of type Ia supernovae, the angular diameter distance of galaxy clusters, the gas mass fract…
We present a new probe of purely gravitationally coupled sectors with large anisotropies. These anisotropies are damped via gravitational interactions with the baryon-photon fluid, which is heated up in the process. The injected heat causes measurable distortions of the cosmic microwave background spectrum. We give analytic estimates for the size of the distortions and outline how to calculate them from first principles. These methods are applied to anisotropies in the form of a domain wall/cosmic string network or caused by a first order phase transition or scalar field dynamics. We find that…
Increasing attention has recently focused on non-traditional dark-matter production mechanisms which result in primordial dark-matter velocity distributions with highly non-thermal shapes. In this paper, we undertake an assessment of how the detailed shape of a general dark-matter velocity distribution impacts structure formation in the non-linear regime. In particular, we investigate the impact on the halo-mass and subhalo-mass functions, as well as on astrophysical observables such as satellite and cluster-number counts. We find that many of the standard expectations no longer hold in situat…
It has been long known that by appropriately modifying gravity one can always reproduce the expansion history of any dark energy model, e.g. the $Λ$CDM. This degeneracy cannot be broken with geometric probes like the Type Ia supernovae, the cosmic microwave background or the baryon acoustic oscillations since they are based on the measurement of distances and scales and therefore require the expansion history $H(z)$, so one may only hope to break this degeneracy by using dynamic probes like the growth rate data that track the matter density perturbations. We demonstrate that breaking this dege…
In the era of precision cosmology, we investigate an novel method to probe the Dark Universe. By studying the fractality of the universe, we estimate a characteristic scale of homogeneity. Using a fisher analysis, we investigate the potential impact of this scale to the cosmological information we can gain from the Euclid satellite, and therefore understand the nature of Dark Energy and Dark matter of our universe.
The dark sector, composed of the fields neutral under the Standard Model (SM) gauge group, can couple to the SM through the Higgs, hypercharge and neutrino portals, and pull the SM towards its scale by loop corrections. This instability, not possible to prevent in the known SM completions like supersymmetry due to their sizable couplings to the SM, calls for alternative mechanisms which can neutralize sensitivities of the SM to the dark sector scale and to the ultraviolet cutoff above it. Here we review such a mechanism in which incorporation of gravity into the SM predicts the existence of a …
A new compilation of $120$ angular-size/redshift data for compact radio quasars from very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) surveys motivates us to revisit the interaction between dark energy and dark matter with these probes reaching high redshifts $z\sim 3.0$. In this paper, we investigate observational constraints on different phenomenological interacting dark energy (IDE) models with the intermediate-luminosity radio quasars acting as individual standard rulers, combined with the newest BAO and CMB observation from Planck results acting as statistical rulers. The results obtained from th…
The theoretical basis of dark energy remains unknown and could signify a need to modify the laws of gravity on cosmological scales. In this study we investigate how the clustering and motions of galaxies can be used as probes of modified gravity theories, using galaxy and direct peculiar velocity auto- and cross-correlation functions. We measure and fit these correlation functions in simulations of $Λ$CDM, DGP, and $f(R)$ cosmologies and, by extracting the characteristic parameters of each model, we show that these theories can be distinguished from General Relativity using these measurements.…
By combining cosmological probes at low, intermediate and high redshifts, we investigate the observational viability of a class of models with interaction in the dark sector. We perform a Bayesian analysis using the latest data sets of type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, the angular acoustic scale of the cosmic microwave background, and measurements of the expansion rate. When combined with the current measurement of the local expansion rate obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we find that these observations provide evidence in favour of interacting models with respect to the…

A broad program of searches at high intensity experiments during the coming decade and beyond will sensitively probe new light mediator particles interacting through the minimal renormalizable vector, Higgs, and neutrino portals as well as higher-dimension axion-like particle portals. These portals may link the visible and dark sectors and play a critical role in many proposed solutions to some of the big open questions in particle physics and cosmology. In this whitepaper, we survey the theoretical and experimental progress, status, and prospects in the study of minimal dark sector portals.

The standard cosmological paradigm currently lacks a detailed account of physics in the dark sector, the dark matter and energy that dominate cosmic evolution. In this paper, we consider the distinguishing factors between three alternative models - warm dark matter, quintessence and coupled dark matter-energy - and \lcdm{} through numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. Key halo statistics - halo spin/velocity alignment between large-scale structure and neighboring haloes, halo formation time and migration - were compared across cosmologies within the redshift range 0$\leq$$…
The velocity function derived from large scale surveys can be compared with the predictions of LCDM cosmology, by matching the measured rotation velocities Vrot of galaxies to the maximum circular velocity of dark matter (DM) halos Vmax. For Vrot<50km/s, a major discrepancy arises between the observed and LCDM velocity functions. However, the manner in which different observational measures of Vrot are associated with Vmax is not straight forward in dwarf galaxies. We instead relate galaxies to DM halos using the empirical baryon- mass to halo-mass relation, and show that different observation…
We present measurements of both scale- and time-dependent deviations from the standard gravitational field equations. These late-time modifications are introduced separately for relativistic and non-relativistic particles, by way of the parameters $G_{\rm matter}(k,z)$ and $G_{\rm light}(k,z)$ using two bins in both scale and time, with transition wavenumber $0.01$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and redshift 1. We emphasize the use of two dynamical probes to constrain this set of parameters, galaxy power spectrum multipoles and the direct peculiar velocity power spectrum, which probe fluctuations on different sca…
Models with pure momentum exchange in the dark sector have been shown to provide a promising scenario to tackle the tension in the clustering inferred from high- and low-redshift probes. A distinctive feature of these models is that only the Euler equation for the dark matter component is modified and the correction is such that the net effect can be associated to an additional friction determined by the interaction rate. In this work, we show that the strength of the interaction parameter needed to resolve the $σ_8$ tension could be detected from the dipole of the matter power spectrum that i…
